Raiders after Jeff Garcia (1 Viewer)

Former 49ers quarterback Jeff Garcia, 37, will be one of the Raiders' top priorities once the free-agency period begins tonight at 9. The former San Jose State star is regarded as the top quarterback available in free agency. His stock soared after he replaced injured regular Donovan McNabb midway through last season and guided the Philadelphia Eagles to an NFC playoff berth. The Raiders, Denver Broncos and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are expected to show the most interest in Garcia. The Eagles declined to pursue Garcia now that McNabb is expected back at full strength. ``If the Raiders call once free agency begins, Oakland definitely will be one of the places he seriously considers,'' said Steve Baker, Garcia's agent

Been hearing lotsa rumors surrounding the Raiders and Packers, specifically Moss for Aaron Rodgers. With that trade in place, the Raiders would have thier QB ( :banned: ) and be free to draft BPA, Calvin Johnson.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I don't think the Raiders are taking JaMarcus Russell as everyone anticipates.

Funny how just 1 year removed of being barely employable, he's getting so much attention. Do teams forget how horrid, or average at best, he was just a year ago?

:banned:I think backup QB in Philly is his ideal situation. Trying to be a starter on a substandard team at this point in his career is going to be ugly.

Which would set them up for Brady Quinn at 16 if he falls that far.

I do.I don't think the Moss-Rodgers deal is in place. I think PFT is full of crap, and even if they 100% right, they only said that the Pack counter offered with Rodgers.I just don't think Aaron Rodgers is the guy that prevents you from taking Russell or Quinn.I also can't believe Garcia is interested in coming to Oakland.

I wouldn't get this. Do the Raiders think they are a Jeff Garcia away from being serious competitors next season? I know they had a pretty good defense all things considered, but why go after a 37 year old journeyman QB? Especially one with a weak arm.

I agree with you, but this is the Raiders we're talking about here!

Since they're likely looking at a young QB to groom (whether it be Russell or someone else), they'll need a veteran presence to hold the fort and mentor the kid. I think Garcia would be a good option in this regard.

And take Troy Smith/Drew Stanton in the 2nd or 3rd...

Garcia did not all the sudden become a good QB again last year. He was put in a position to succeed on a good team, with a good coach and a system that suited his skillset. Putting Garcia on the Raiders while it will make Jeff more money would be a disaster IMO. It will be Clev all over again.

 I think this is the exact direction they go in if they sign Garcia. They take Calvin Johnson with the 1st pick and take Stanton in the 2nd round. Garcia grooms Stanton for a year or so before turning the team over to him.

Did you forget how horrid the team he was on is/was?

Why can't he groom Russell or Quinn?

A possibility, but if there are questions surrounding both Russell and Quinn, as there seem to be, why not take the best player available in Johnson and take a QB in round 2? IMO, Stanton can be as good as Russell or Quinn.

The SF Chronicle is reporting that the Packers and Raiders have not had any talks about Moss (based on an anonymous "NFL source").

I think that's a lot more plausible than any of the trade scenarios that have been batted around.

I think the reason would be to get the best possible QB. If you like Stanton that much, that's cool. Most have him significantly lower than the other two.I have a major issue taking a WR number 1. The Raiders need to improve 5 positions on their line, get a QB of the future, probably a better RB, a starting TE, a DE to play opposite Burgess, and a young penetrating DT.I would put all those priorities over a WR. The team has several players they like on the team. I hate the draft history of 1st round WR's, I hate the records of teams that have drafted WR's that high, and I hate that the Raiders don't have a franchise QB. I think you can go out and get WR's to help your team every offseason. Quarterbacks? Not so much.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, get a vet QB and take Peterson, period.

how about this:Sign GarciaTrade Randy MossTake Calvin.Get Stanton top of round2.
As a Raider fan I hope not. Garcia looked real good last year, but before that he was miserable with the Lions and Browns. And I think Stanton is a career #2 QB at best. Really not impressed with Stanton at all.

The QB at the top of the draft is a crapshoot. The WR isn't a real need. RB is a need, but not as great as the OL.

This looks like the Raiders are going to keep everyone guessing until someone jumps up and gives them the trade offer of the century. The talk at the Combine was not about teams wanting to trade down in this draft, but wanting to trade up.

I can see the Raiders trading down within the top five and taking any of Joe Thomas, Jamarcus Russell, Calvin Johnson, Adrian Peterson or Brady Quinn. Heck, if they get enough, they could trade down within the top 10 and snag a great defensive lineman or Free Safety. The Raiders could likely use whatever extra picks they get to move into the middle of the first round with their second round pick. Maybe take Quinn in the middle of the first.

Bottom-line, Al Davis is showing a heck of a great hand, with plenty of options. Sadly, that is what happens when the current players are crap.

Garcia will not be back with the Eagles. They extended AJ Feely and promoted him to backup.

I also can't believe Garcia is interested in coming to Oakland.
He was just on ESPN talking to Bob Ley about that possibility. He sounds fine with the chance to be Oakland's starting QB. Garcia doesn't have the kind of "arm" Al usually looks for, which makes me believe that Kiffin actually IS getting a chance to bring in the players he wants.

Other than getting a starting gig, going back home to NorCal (he's from Gilroy) might also be an incentive for him to come to Oak. As a fan I wouldn't mind Garcia playing for the Raiders as long as they draft Russell as well.
