Raiders starting QB thread: Culpepper - McCown - Russell (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
There have been a few threads regarding status for individual week games but how about one for the entire season as this looks to be a roller coaster that may come up every week.

This thread is intended for:

1. Posting news on the Raiders starting QB situation throughout the upcoming week(s)

2. discussing your thoughts on the matter

Some may not care about this but it may be important for start 2QB leagues, dynasty (Russell) and even for those who think Culpepper could step in and put up good enough nmbers to be considered in start 1QB leagues. So please, don't come in here and say "they are all junk", "who cares" etc.

Quick unofficial summary thus far:

Week 1

- Culpepper had better pre-season by McCown starts as he new the playbook much better

- McCown puts up good numbers against a weak Lions D: 30/40 for 313, 2TD/2INT

- McCown injures his foot and breaks his finger the last play of the game - initially it was thought he would be out for a few weeks

Week 2

- McCown is able to play through his injuries and gets the start again

- is terrible in the Raiders heartbreaking loss to Denver: 8/16 for 73, 1TD/3INT and 2 fumbles

- CPepp doesn't come in as Raiders were in the game the whole way, mostly due to Jordan's success on the ground

Week 3

- many think CPepp should get the start cause of McCown's bad performance and high number of turnovers, but McCown gets the nod again against Cleveland

- McCown has decent outing in 1st half 6/12 for 108, 1TD and 1 lsot fumble but hurts his other foot. CPepp came in for one play then McCown resumed the last series before half - Culpepper came in for the start of the 2nd half and finished the game. Raiders were up 16-10 at half when McCown was done for the day

- the Raider fans cheered loud for Culpepper as most of them have wanted him in their frmo the start

- Culpepper's numbers in relief: 8/14 for 118 - 1 dropped TD. Led the Raiders from behind to come back and win the game

My Thoughts

McCown: has helped lead the Raiders to a respectable start. Could easily be 2-1 on the year. His numbers aren't too bad but 5INT and 3 fumbles in 2.5 games doesn't get the job done IMO. That many turnoevers loses games - good passing yardage can't make up for it. Has had 3 injuries now (finger and both feet) and I am guessing he has tried to play hurt because he knows he will lose his job if he sits.

Culpepper: fan's choice and the upside guy. 3-time Pro Bowler (keep the Cpepp was nothing without Moss debate to another thread please). Can anyone really see McCown leading the Raiders to even 6+ wins? Would they be worse off with Culpepper? I doubt it. CPepp has had turnover problems like McCown so its tough to just judge McCown. I think CPepp should be in there and lead the way to Russell for either late this year if the Raiders are stinking or set the stage for Russell to take over next year.

Russell: I am no coach so I have no clue about how much it will take for him to learn but I would think he may be able to see action late this season if the Raiders are way out of it and playing for nothing. If not, then he would surely be 2008 Week 1 starter. Culpepper is a band-aid for the Raider QB situation and McCown will never be a viable NFL starter.

Anyone else here anything new on McCown's injury? CPep might be a good waiver wire pickup for those who have Bulger, Leinhart, or Grossman starting. I have been looking at a number of options to improve my QB play and this seems to be the best one. Looking at how CPep did in the preseason, if he gets the opportunity he may really impress.

Josh McCown (foot) reportedly "appeared to be hurting" at the Raiders' facility Monday, but coach Lane Kiffin isn't ready to name his Week 4 starter.

The Oakland Tribune thinks Daunte Culpepper will start at Miami, but we've thought that before and been wrong. That said, the Raiders kept Andrew Walter on the roster this week because they feel McCown may not be ready. Sep. 24 - 8:46 pm et

Do any of these guys have value as a reliable starter in FF?

 In 10 team leagues that start 2QBs all but 2 QBs will be on rosters so there is slim pickins on bye weeks and any change is of huge significance...Oak, MN, Car, KC, Atl, Chi - All QB changes are of large importance.

from the Raiders message board:

McCown has fractured toePosted by Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer on Wednesday at 2:42 pmHow deliberate is Lane Kiffin?Toward the end of his session with the media Monday, he said McCown has a fractured toe _ and still maintained he needed more information before ruling him out of Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins.

10 team league...start 2 QB's. = 20 QB'sNFL - 32 teams = 32 QB's

Seems to me like teams can each have 3 QB's, then there will be 2 on the WW....

32 - 20(starters on your roster) = 12 QB's from the WW or bench..

did I miss something here? :goodposting:

More from the Raiders message board:

From and interview with Lane Kiffin on Sirius radio (poster is sumamrizing the interview):

Lane talked about Walter and that due to McCown injury and if he is unable to play that they need him to back up Culpepper and that Russell was not an option being here only two days. Which made it necessary to carry four QB's to protect the team.

As to who starting he didn't know yet. That they would be starting practice and would see where Josh was with his injury.

He said the would leave for Miami after Fridays practice.
I can't believe how much the Raider fans on that message baord want Culpepper to start over Josh McClown. Also no excitement for Russell. Wouldn't you be excited for your QB if he was the 1st overall pick in the NFL?? I don't expect Russell to do much of anything this year but I would think people would talk about him more rather than just begging for Culpepper...

Injuries and benchings too.

(Rotoworld) ESPNews reports Daunte Culpepper is expected to start in Week 4.Impact: Josh McCown is limited by his fractured toe and will most likely be inactive. Culpepper is only a desperate fantasy option, but the Dolphins' secondary has been less than spectacular, so he has some upside in the matchup. You should still be able to do better. Culpepper has thrown 15 interceptions to just eight touchdowns in his last 12 games played.
(KFFL) ESPNews reports Oakland Raiders QB Daunte Culpepper is expected to start Week 4, replacing the injured QB Josh McCown (toe).

There is still a bitter taste in a lot fans' mouths over the holdout.

Not only that, but a lot of the fans - myself included - want to see what can be done this year. I realize that Russell is not the answer this year because he didn't put himself in the place to learn the offence. Nothing can be changed by that. I am one of the group that wants Culpepper to start and play, even if the offence is scaled back for him. I think he gives the Raiders a better chance to stay competitive and win this year.

That all makes sense. Reminds me on Lindros when he entered the NHL - everyone was really down on him for quite a while. I must admit that I am only watching Raider games this year because of my fantasy players involved, but my preception of the team has changed drastically. I see them as able to be competitive every single week and I wouldn't be all that surprised if they finished .500 or better. If this is the case, then they should definitely put the QB in there that gives them the best chance of maybe making a playoff run. Jordan's success should force teams to concentrate a bit more on stopping the run, which in turn should open up the pass - CPepp would be the best guy to take a few shots down field on playaction on a normal running down if teams are expecting Jordan to be pounded as he has thus far.
