Ralph Kiner has passed away (1 Viewer)

I remember reading a review that called "Kiner's Corner" the funniest show on television since The Honeymooners.

Great HR Slugger for the Pirates in the 40s and 50s and was the only player in the NL to to hit more than 50 HRs in a season until they expanded the season to 162 games. The Pirates were pretty awful in those years and Kiner was the main attraction.

He was really mishandled by Branch Rickey though:

The 1952 Pirates lost 112 games, the worst record of any major league team since 1935. Home attendance dropped by about one-third, and Kiner's batting average fell to .244. Despite his league-leading home-run performance, Rickey cut his salary to $65,000. When Kiner objected, Rickey told him, "We can finish last without you."

He became senile long before it was in fashion, but in his broadcasting heyday, he was one of the best. Terrific storyteller.

RIP.

Grew up with Kiners Korner. A true legend.

7 years straight as HR king. A short but amazing career.

Grew up listening to him and McCarver and Zabriskie. And Kiners Corner of course.

RIP

Loved him as an announcer.

"The Mets have gotten their leadoff hitter on only once this inning."

"All of his saves this season have come in relief appearances."

"Kevin McReynolds stops at third, and he scores."

"On Fathers Day, we again wish you all happy birthday."

"The Hall of Fame ceremonies are on the thirty-first and thirty-second of July."

"Tony Gwynn has been named player of the year for April."

"Half of Jeff King's extra base hits last year went for extra bases."

"Hello everybody, welcome to Kiner's Korner, I'm Ron Kiner."

"Hello everybody, welcome to Kiner's Korner, I'm Ralph Korner."

"Hello everybody, welcome to Kiner's Korner, This is, uh, I'm, uh."

:lmao:

Use to love watching Kiner's Korner after the game. He went through a ton of brutal (losing) seasons with the Mets and it was interesting watching him interview Mets loss after loss while still keeping it entertaining.

I'll never forget one warning-track shot that Kiner clearly lost and didn't know where the ball ended up..."It is going, it is going, it is............................................................................................................................................................gone goodbye, NO! Caught at the warning track! .....................................................................................................................No, it's a home run! Home run, for.......Darryl Strawberry.......and the Mets.......lead.........no, it was caught."

some more:

"Rookie Wilson was candidate for Mookie of the year."

"Third base is certainly a reactionary position"

"All the Mets' road wins against Los Angeles this year have been at Dodger Stadium"

"They will pass the father-son tandem of Buddy Bell and Yogi Berra."
--on Bobby and Barry Bonds becoming the all-time father-son home-run leaders

While a bit off color, I can't imagine Ralph would be upset. From my friend:

Today, on Kiner's Koroner.

ETA: Even I did a Kiner there.

Kiner was such a broadcasting legend. Those '80's Mets teams were something else, and the post-game show was a must-see. Confluence of everything televisual and great. RIP, and, because this is appropriate, :lmao:

Doesn't sound too bright.

As sad as I am to hear of his passing I am happy not to hear him on the telecast anymore. Don't get me wrong - loved him in his heyday but listening to him last few years has been brutal. Was painful to listen to.

Hey I am no being insensitive - I mean he was 91 years old
I agree. Tough to listen to. Not unlike **** Clark at the end.

He was an old time baseball player turned broadcaster. He just stumbled over words a lot. He seemed like a very genuine guy on the air.

Loved Kiner's Korner.

Him and Bob Murphy had incredibly long broadcasting careers, although listening to Murphy on the radio was my favorite growing up.

Hell, even McCarver was generally very good when he was part of the Mets booth.

A lot of crappy baseball, but good broadcasting and personalities.

Had to be one of Gary Thornes first jobs, and he's great.

I'm a Yankee fan but I grew up loving and respecting kiner and that was before I learned of his pilot life in the war, legendary baseball career and truly legendary off the field career. Cheers and a celebration to a life well lived.
