Rams Sign Jeff Smoker to One-Year Contract (1 Viewer)

With Bulger's penchant for getting dinged and missing games, I would like to get a good read on who is the #2 QB on the Rams.

I know Fitzpatrick started a few games last year, but (refresh my memory here please), did he beat out Martin, or was Martin injured too?

Signing Smoker was a surprise move to me. I wonder if the Lions (Martz) wants to bring over either Martin or Fitzpatrick to backup Harrington. If so, I'd bump either one up a notch or two on the dynasty meter.

ETA: I forgot the link from the blogger.

It is not uncommon for teams to carry 4 QBs heading in to preseason.Smoker has been a Ram off and on for at least two years.

The pecking order last year was:

Bulger (was injured)

Martin (injured, quickly)

Fitzpatrick

Smoker

Smoker was added after the Bulger / Martin injuries.

I think its gonna be too early to get any kind of read on this coaching staff. They have been busy evaluating their own team as well as the upcoming draft class, and really havn't commented publicly on how they view the talent they have. I'm interested in seeing if the new coaching staff will work in unison with the front office types. The ones Martz feuded with are still here, and Martz is gone. This may be one way to guage what the real problem was in STL the last couple of years. Another thing of interest was that they were going to hire a Director of Pro Personnel in the offseason too, any kind of movement there is extremely quiet. What the Rams actions will be in the future is anybodys guess. I'm looking forward to see what kind of plan is in place.

Martin is an UFA, and hes like 36 and apparantly isnt too durable.

Wouldnt be shocked if he isnt back.

I took Fitzpatrick in my dynasty draft recently, so I would love to hear anyone elses opinion on this matter.

martz drafted fitzpatrick and was supposedly very high on him. if he were to somehow be cut free, he could possibly resurface in detroit

He or one of the Chiefs veteran QBs(that "never" play) are somewhat needed as teams like to have a veteran backup that knows the O.I think in a perfect world NFL teams prefer one vet and one youngster.

Smoker, IIRC, was an Eagle. With Martz in Detroit, re-signing him may either keep him out of Martz's hands or force the Lions ot give up some conditional pick for him. FWIW This is a common move by teams when a new coach is signed elsewhere and it rarely bears fruit.
