Ran a 10k in June (4 Viewers)

Just got back from the Ortho... no structural damage (phew). Prescribed PT and able to work out after seeing my PT buddy. Will probably be taking things slowly again once I'm given the green light.
Great to hear that you are still in the game! Let us know what you hear from your PT buddy. Us old, falling apart guys can use all the info we can.
Will do.. but first I have to find out what the hell is going on with my ear (keeping me from swimming). Of course my pregnancy weight isn't helping- damn the wife and her carbs, salt and sweets diet!fwiw- it doesn't look like Meniere's. phew!

Planning on a 9-mile easy run tonight, 5-mile easy tomorrow, then off Friday before a 16-mile long run on Saturday that will get me to 40 miles for the week. If all goes well, I'll run 44 miles next week (including long runs of 10 & 18) and 48 miles the following week (8 & 20) before tapering in preparation for my marathon BQ attempt in Green Bay on May 20th!
 A one-week "taper"? (assuming long runs=Saturdays; you have 16 on 4/21, 18 on 4/28, 20 on 5/5, leaving only 5/12 as the weekend before the race for the "taper") The program I'm using (probably designed more for the casual runner, not a speed-demon like you  ) would have 12 on 4/21, 20 on 4/28, 10 on 5/5 and 6 on 5/12. Seems like some hard runs so close to race day, but good luck with that!
4 miles at 6:53, 6:45, 6:48, and 6:42
The sad thing is that 6:50 is about how fast I can do a single mile if I sprint all-out.
I could probably pull those times free-falling from a mile-tall building.
Funny- back when I was fit last year and before I'd always run faster after I'd warmed up in a big way- usually attached to triathlon, so I'm the same boat as gruecd. One mile ain't going to be much, if any faster than 10k or 1/2 for me. Some of it might have to do with my having relearned a shorter stride for tris... dunno. I remember we used to have to do something called a "Cooper Test" for soccer in highschool and college; 2 miles under 12 minutes. Of course, that was about 30-40 lbs and smashed joints ago.

48 hours from leaving on my 190 mile ride from Houston to Austin.

My knee has never felt worse after a weird incident a couple weeks back where it spontaneously tightened up.

Gonna really bump up the advil the day of and ice it down between rides and hope for the best.

After this is done I'm not gonna screw around anymore and just go ahead and get the knee scoped once and for all.

This is a problem I've had for 15 years now and it ain't getting any better.

Have you tried duct tape yet?Good luck on the ride- should take you what, about 4 hours?

Nice 6-mile tempo run last night. 1-mile warm-up, then 4 miles at 6:53, 6:45, 6:48, and 6:42 before a 1-mile cool-down.

Wow! Nicely done. 5 miles yesterday, 10 miles this morning (about 7:55/mile), and 5 miles tomorrow. This will be a big weekend (bike/run brick on Sat, 20 miles on Sunday) for a 50 mile week, hopefully. Then a lighter week, one more big week with another 20 miler before the taper to May 27's marathon (possibly at BQ pace). Still just 40 degrees this morning.
Where are you running on 5/27? Madison? Med-City?
Madison - He's running the full marathon. I'm running the half. He'll probably beat me across the finish line. :bye:

My sister is running the half in Madison. I'm running the full marathon in Green Bay the week beforehand, but I might come down to watch my sister run.

Have a great ride Culdeus! I prefer the Motrin to the Advil, but do whatever's best for you. If I'd have known a few years back how much one's body starts to ache with age I would have purchased stock in pain killers. Have a blast on the ride, make some memories, and then let us know about them!

5k last night. Good run, a little windy. So little I-T ache that I probably needn't even mention it. The dogs still wanted to be let loose, but I managed to slow 'em down a little.

I'm considering a bit of a fartlek for the marathon next week -- on miles 1, 6, 11, 16, 21, and 26 (and the .2 as well), release the hounds for a sub-9 pace (or whatever they feel like doing; no watching the watch lol), then rein 'em in and take it easy for the rest of it. Afterall, this is supposed to be a "training run", considering I have San Diego on the horizon five weeks later.

gruecd, it'd be neat if we (with Schmegma) could hook up in Madison ..maybe sometime the day before the race.

culdeus, be healthy on your big ride!!

For sure. I'll let you know if we decide to come down. If I'm feeling well enough recovered from GB, I might even run the 6K. I've never even heard of a 6K race before (much less run one), so regardless of how I'd do, I'd have an instant PR! :o Eight easy miles last night at about 7:45 pace, another easy six miles this morning at closer to 8:00 pace. Off tomorrow, then shooting for 16 on Saturday. Planning to run them pretty easy, but if I feel good enough, I might try to run the last 2-3 miles at marathon pace (7:15) and see how it goes.

Chicago Marathon registration is officially closed as of yesterday, April 18.

:hot:  :hot:

Guess I need to find a different fall race to shoot for.

I'm fighting off some bronchitis-like infection (fun with asthma) so did 3 easy miles this morning and that's been it for the week. Hoping the Z-pak has me ready for 6 & 15 this weekend.

I'm thinking we should get together somewhere with pasta and beer. My sister and brother in law will be in town for the run too and would probably want to join in on the fun.

Thanks for the light bulb. Early registration deadline for San Diego is tomorrow, else add another $10. After two birthdays, registering two vehicles (including emissions check), and filing taxes in the past coupla weeks, I'm a bit tapped until next week. I suppose an extra $10 will be cheaper than a bounced check charge. lol

Gotta say- not so nice getting fat and endorphine-challenged during my extended off-season, but nice not shelling out a couple hundos per race.I have to remember to send NYC Marathon my money so I can keep pretending to race each year.

 Since my daughter will be working and unable to join me for the race weekend (a disappointment for us both), my wife might actually come along (very rare). But we'll have enough of a crowd that we can have a lot of fun anyway.

Update on my training:

I finally had a week without too many aches and pains. I'm still running slower than I'd like, and haven't pushed it on the bike much. I added some speed this week, but am still hesitant.

Today was my final brick prior to my next race (April 29th). I completed a 20 mile bike ride at 2:50 pace (21 mph = pretty fast for me), followed by a 4.5 mile run at 7:27 pace. These were my first sub 7:30 miles since my last injury, and they felt pretty good. I was hoping to get into the 7:10 range prior to the race, but will have to be happy where I'm at.

I've got Buffett on my brain, as we'll be seeing him in Houston this weekend. The timing is great as it just means more of a taper than I generally do. I only hope that the obscene amount of calories I'll consume this weekend can burn off by next.

To all those meeting in Madtown, I wish I could join you. Them's my old stomping grounds. Party hard, run fast, and have a Leinie's Sunset Wheat or a New Glarus Hop Hearty for me.

Weather finally shaped up in NJ. Ran about 3.5 miles outside yesterday. Ran negative splits for the first time too, so pretty psyched about that. Tomorrow is my first "long" run of 6 miles. I have done 5 before, so this shouldn't be too bad!

If it helps, break it down mentally in advance. 3 x 2, or 2 x 3 or something. You should do fine ...let us know!

You can still run it if you sign up through a charitable organization that has a team in the race. At least that is what I heard. Check the CARA website, they might have ideas.

2 miles this morning but I picked up the pace and did them in under 17 minutes. Not very impressive to anyone but me. I am starting to get the hang of this running thing. Expect a miserable post on Monday after I put in 3.5 miles on Sunday. At least the weather will be nice.

Under 17 is extremely impressive :lmao: . You've come a long way, and are continuing to get stronger. Keep it up!!! One difficult thing during this stage of training is to NOT treat every run as a chance for a personal best. You need dead miles (slow pace, just eating up the road) mixed in with a minority of fast miles (like this mornings run!). Trying for PR's is an ez way to get injured (says the guy who seems to keep doing it :lmao: ).

:useless: :lmao: You're doing great, GStrot!! Heed PSL's comment about the PRs - that has been one of my downfalls over the past couple of years. BTW, I know I could still get into Chicago via Cara, but I think I may take this as a sign / opportunity to look at a different marathon - I've done Chicago four times and should get a change of pace if I'm going to do another one. Plus I'm already planning 3 Chicago races (SoldierField10, Distance Classic 1/2 and LaSalle 1/2). Have good runs (and bike rides) this weekend everyone!!

Thanks! Good point on the PRs. I am only working on speeding things up on the short runs every Friday. Sunday (3.5 miles) will be a slow run I expect it to be much closer to 10 minute miles than 8.5 minute miles. Until I know my abilities, I am taking it slow.

Still doing my 4 milers. My group has decided not to run over 5 miles until June 6th when our official training starts. Got in 4 this morning in sub-8minute miles. That is very fast for me.

I have only been doing the running thing since December but for the fist time ran the other day with a bad hangover. Wow, that sucked. My head was trying to explode. My body was trying to refuse to move at all. My stomach was very iffy. Did 4 at a 9 1/2 minute pace. It was terrible. I do not reccomend it.

:boxing:   :wall: :ptts:

Keep up the good work, everybody!! Today was a scheduled rest day for me, but it was so nice outside that I decided to go for an easy 24-minute 5K jog. Getting up early to run 16 tomorrow morning before it gets warm outside. Nothing like knowing you've run 16 miles before most of your neighbors have gotten out of bed!!!

I've got my big 20-miler coming up tomorrow. (I'm following HH's novice marathon schedule, and this is it; my taper will start next week). I'm posting about it here for extra motivation.

If you've been following Hal's program, tomorrow will not be a problem for you - Good Luck!!

Have an awesome run Ivan!!! Once the 20-miler is done, it's all over, but the shouting. Treat tomorrow's run as much like the actual run as you can. Try to get up at the same time, eat the same food, practice bathroom stuff (getting all that you can out of you before you start), wear the same clothes, etc. While it's a dress rehearsal, the real thing will be easier and more enjoyable as you'll have rested legs, a lot of adrenaline, and extra motivation (reaching goals, yelling crowds, etc.).

Did my 6 miles this morning. Did it on the treadmill at the gym just to make sure I paced myself. I can't pace myself at all running outside yet. Always go out too fast. Did miles 1-3 at 10 min pace. Did miles 4-6 at 9 min pace. Didn't feel tired so kept running and did a 7th mile at 8 min pace. That was a little tiring at the end, but I felt great . Ended up running for a little over an hour. :patselfonback:

Nice run!!! Weather was perfect for my 16-miler. Clear and mid-40s at the start, sunny and low-50s at the finish. Took it pretty easy and averaged 7:59 pace to finish at 2:07:37, but I mixed in a couple of fast miles (sub-7:30), and I ran the last mile at 7:05 just to see how much I had left in the tank. If my 18-miler next weekend goes this well, I'm definitely switching from the half to the full marathon at Green Bay and taking a shot at my 3:10 BQ.

Nice work!re: pacing- I've been talking up "out and backs" in here as a great method for developing consistent pace, worth trying out once a week.

I've got my 20-miler scheduled for Sunday. I'll be interested to hear how your run went. I'm using the HH schedule, also, and have really found it to be helpful. Looking forward to that taper ...Today was a 'brick' - a one hour bike followed by a 10-mile run (so about 2 1/2 hours). I felt good and finished strong. I didn't wear a watch, but I think the run pace was about 8:20/mile. Now ...nap time.

My 20-miler ended up being much easier than I thought it would be. I did 18 two weeks ago, and while I had no problem finishing, I found it difficult to maintain anything like a normal pace toward the end, and my legs hurt really bad afterwards. (Note: My legs were not "sore" after that run; they were really in a state of pain). This run was a piece of cake by comparison. I was able to maintain a pretty consistent 9:30 pace through about 15 miles. I had a couple of slow miles mixed in after than, but I still managed to do the last mile at 9:15. The run overall took about 3:19, which I was pleased with. My 18 miler was 3:08, so I added 2 miles but only 11 minutes. I'm cool with that. And while my legs hurt a bit after this run, it was nowhere near as bad as two weeks ago.

I treated this exactly like a dress rehearsal for race day. We had high winds and thunderstorms this morning so I ran on the indoor track instead of outside as planned, but that's okay. This actually made it easier to keep an eye on my pace and to hydrate/eat at exactly the mileage points I planned on. It was kind of weird stuffing gels and a Clif bar into my shorts while running on a track, but it was nice just to confirm that things didn't bounce around or fall our anything while running.

I'm about 100% sure I could have done another 6.2, especially with the extra motivation of race day, so this was a great run for my confidence. Obviously I'm pretty slow by the standards of a lot of the people in this thread, but still.

I'm going to spend the rest of the afternoon celebrating the end of my training by imbibing a high-carbohydrate beverage 12 oz at a time. Then its on to the taper.

Did 10mi today, the final big run before the marathon! Nearly got attacked by a hell-hound along the way. Y'all have seen movies or other shows where they show a dog running full out, low to the ground, ready to attack and kill their prey. This is exactly how this beast was running. :bag: Thanks to anti-gun nuts and their gun bannings ;) , I wasn't packing, so I did the next logical thing -- I ran out into the street to the center median. :loco: Fortunately, it was during a break in traffic and I safely avoided becoming a red smear on the pavement. I figured that I'd have a chance at dodging cars, whereas a dog would more likely become a hood ornament. :D The dog didn't follow me, but I really wasn't interested in finding out what he wanted. Tie up your ####### dogs, people! :hot:

Anyhow, it was a good run, around a 9:23 pace, and fairly steady at that. :fro: Still gotta find that lower gear so I can stretch it for 26.2, instead of finding that wall somewhere in the teens.

Weather was similar to what's being forecast for Nashville on race day. Low 50's, overcast, damp from overnight sprinkles, perfect! 76/54 and t-storms is the forecast, so I'm hoping for a little rain and a lotta clouds.

IvanK - good read. Interesting to hear how much better this run was after the pain from the 18 miler, but I guess that's the idea of training ...stress - recover - improve. Incredible to hear that you did it indoors. That's some serious discipline!!!!!

RoarinS, glad you're running well heading into the race. Enjoy this coming week!

Well ...ouch! Did my second 20 miler today (one more in two weeks). Didn't get out until about 11:30 a.m. on an 80 degree day. :bs: Church and teaching Sunday school first. Planned it pretty good for food and fluids, but thankfully I found some water fountains at miles 16 and 18. I knew it'd be hard after a full day yesterday. Kept a comfortable pace, though it slipped over the last four or five miles. A 50 mile week!

Nice ice bath afterwards. Brrr!

triman, I forget- do you run with a fuel-belt or camel-back? Congrats on 20m x2... excellent work!

I've got PT tomorrow- finally.

I am happy to report that I went 5 miles tonight, and this was the first time I've run 100% pain free in my left knee since 3/25, which was 4 weeks ago. It looks like taking a week and a half off may have paid off for me.

This Saturday I have my first race of the season, which is the 8K Crazylegs race here in Madison. After that, it's only 4 weeks to the Madison Half Marathon on 5/27.

I use the fuel belt, though one of my four containers had broken, so I can only carry about 21 oz. - obviously not enough for a long run on a hot day. I did a planned ten mile loop (which included two gels), dropped off the containers for my wife to refill while I did a mile loop with a banana and a Gatorade bottle. Had a PowerBar and the containers for the final nine mile loop. Not enough fluid, but the water fountains bailed me out. Knowing the fountains are now turned on, I'll be OK for the next long run.Good luck with PT. Be patient! You're in this for the long haul.Schmegma, glad to hear you're back on track. I'm hoping that continues! My wife is not coming to Madison, so it's just the old man. Now if you or gruecd have any unmarried sisters ...

Weather was similar to what's being forecast for Nashville on race day. Low 50's, overcast, damp from overnight sprinkles, perfect! 76/54 and t-storms is the forecast, so I'm hoping for a little rain and a lotta clouds. :lmao:
:lmao: The difference a day makes. Forecast now is 77/52 and sunny.  Guess I'll have to work on my rain dance over the next few days. :lmao:
