Ran a 10k in June (2 Viewers)

First off, congrats on the baby, golden! Certainly understand that taking priority over the nerds. Second, congrats on poppin' your race cherry! You learned a few good lessons at that race. The biggest being the mental part of the game. You discovered pretty quickly that a lot of this is mental. People can withstand a lot more pain than they initially realize. Good job not getting chicked! If you let her beat you at the finish, you'd never live it down here...
:goodposting: Great first race and definite congrats on the baby goldenchild.

9 miles, done. Did the first mile in 8:15, next 2 were faster, got a little wary and backed off the gas pedal a bit mile 4 and 5 before realizing I was still in great shape so I picked up the pace mile 6 and went after it and got faster each of the final 3 miles. Was on an even 8 minute pace when I hit mile 6 and did the last 3 in 7:40-7:30-7:10 to get in under an hour 9 mins.Hope I'm sore tomorrow because it's going to take a lot of discipline to not take off on recovery day. Big assist to you guys for the training help!
I know it sounds like a broken record...but why finish up those last 3 miles like that?Your last mile was closer to your tempo time than your long run pace. Those of us saying slow down are saying so because pushing like this too many times a week is what leads to injuries in many runners.
Fast runs faster, slow runs slower - I was doing my fast run so I finished fast.

goldenchild - congrats on the baby and nice job on your first race! I just ran my first as well and am itching for more. Enjoyed your report (not too long or too much info by the way)

ned - i love getting a run in before the work day. great feeling. if i could only get my lazy ### out of bed more frequently.

Been cruising along fairly well on my end. Sun - 7.25mi 8:50/153, Mon - 3mi 8:39/151, Today - 5mi 8:49/149. Tempo run on tap for tomorrow. Have my first 10k coming up in a few weeks. Trying to figure out where I should be aiming time wise.

Ok, thought it was your "long run"...which is generally not a fast run.

:goodposting: The hardest part is around mile 2, getting over that mental hurdle. Now that you've beaten it you'll know next time that you can push harder and you'll still make it.Grats on the kid!

WHEW! Thought I finally did it right! Today's a recovery run, plan is to do sprints tomorrow or Thursday. Legs today, surprisingly not barking at me...yet, anyway.

Congrats Golden on the child. And great race as well.

---------------

Went out and did 6 miles yesterday. Just keeping up some mileage at this point. My mental heatlh is in much more need of these runs than anything so they are good for what I can get out of them.

Have a great day all.

Typically I use the intervals and tempos as the fast runs. And usually only one of those in any given week. Sometimes I may double up but thats usually if I am adding a tempo into my long run and making a few of those miles fast. Then again, our goals are a bit different. I don't believe you are training for a half marathon but shorter races? Most long runs are called long slow runs...they are used to build your endurance (which, as a result does help in maintaining your speed during races like 5 and 10ks.

Good work! What was your 5K PR again? Do you know your max HR yet? Those are almost identical to my numbers. I'm a 195 max HR, for reference.

I don't believe you are training for a half marathon but shorter races?
Correct. I'm doing 5k's this summer and my current plan is a 10k this fall, although I'm finding it difficult to find one near Cleveland. I'm considering expanding to 10 milers and half marathons next year but am wary I won't have the time to commit to properly train. If I want to race anyway. I've already completed a marathon, so if I were to dabble in anything 10 miles and higher again I'd rather train and race rather than just do it. Something to re-evaluate once kid #2 arrives in the fall.

goldenchild, please stop at the race report counter. goldenchild ...race report counter.
:P Sorry for the late report! I wanted to give a full detailed report and between Father's Day and my wife going into labor this morning at 4:30am and delivering at 3:30pm today... I've been super busy!

Here we go...

With this being my first organized run, I didn't know what to expect logistically.

Tossed and turned the night before (too excited, perhaps?). Woke up at 5:15am and grubbed on a plain bagel loaded with peanut butter and got hydrated with H20.

Arrived at the venue by 6:40am and got a very light warmup in. I found a few friends from my gym (1 also running the 5k and the other 2 running the 5mi) and hung with them at the start.

About 7-7:10 they started to corral us into our expected pace positions. We stood around the sub8-sub9 minute area.

Lots. Of. Eye. Candy. I tried to memorize bib numbers (where they wearing bibs? ;) )

I'm not sure what a good turn out looks like, but they announced that there were 1900+ participants between the 5k and 5mi runners. Looked like a lot to me. I was nervous because it looked like we were standing in the front 3rd of the pack and I thought I was being overzealous.

They made some announcements and then proceeded with having someone sing the national anthem.

The race starts and immediately go with the tunes... hit shuffle and the 1st song that pops up is Lenny Kravitz' Where Are We Running? That got me juiced.

I remembered tri's write up of the course ( ) so I made an effort to stick with it.

I'm not sure if I kept too fast a pace at the beginning or if my nerves were getting to me, but there were a small handful of times that I just wanted to start walking (even within the first 1/4-1/2 mile! When that happened I just slowed down just a hair and tried to get my mind off of focusing on it... telling myself it's just mental.

It seemed to work, though, because I never stopped jogging!

At around mile 2 there was a nice significant downhill that I enjoyed... but of course where there is a downhill portion there was an uphill that immediately followed. I seriously thought about starting the walk of shame at this point. What helped me was watching a 10-13 yo kid effortlessly take that hill as if he owned it.

Towards the end of the race, as we approached the bend into the stadium, I seriously mis-judged the point at which I was suppose to turn on the burners. It wasn't until I was at the last 50 yards or so when I turned it on. There were 2 guys that I could have come in before had I known. Instead, it boiled down to me or this chick for that finish. I was still at my pace when I felt/saw her pass me with 50 yards to go, so I downshifted and passed her pretty easily. That's when she kicked it up and I felt her closing the gap fast. There were about 25 more yards to go and that's when I just left it all out there. I beat her :excited: .

From that point, they cut off our timing chips and it was a walk around the perimeter of the stadium to pick up our race medals, race t-shirts, snap a pic, and then refuel with free oranges, bananas, yogurt with granola, and zico coconut water.

I hung around long enough to get the unofficial results and take some pics with my friends.

Unofficial:

100 overall (of 935), 14th in my age group of 66 participants (30-34) at 27:01

Then the official was telling everyone that the times are as much as 20 secs off because their posted info was based on the start clock (so it is only accurate for those at the front of the pack at the start).

Official:

101 overall (of 935), 14th in my age group at 26:37 (now my PR by default).

I am very happy with those results, considering how crappy my planning/preparation was leading up to the event. The longest distance I ran in the 6 months of "training" I did was 1.5 miles. I was pretty much just running 1-1.5miles after my weight training and calling that training for my 5k. I would love to see how improved I could be using a lot of your guys' advice in this thread.

The SF full/half/10k/5k is coming up in September and everything but the half is sold out. No way am I ready for a half.

I had such a blast participating in this event. I will be looking for another one to run for sure in the near future.

I think I would like to focus on the 5k event to improve my PR before I get into anything longer. By the way... the top finisher in the 5k ran 16:44

I think I've written way more than you guys were interested in. I may have even left out some stuff I shouldn't have. Feel free to throw questions my way.

My next few days will be pretty busy with the new addition to the fam, but I'll check in when I get some free time.

Thanks to everyone in this thread that gave advice (both direct and indirectly). This thread rocks. :banned:
Congrats on your first race and you can never write enough in a race report. It's fun to experience the race with each of the runners in this thread. Second congrats on the new addition. My favorite part was you downshifting to take the girl at the end. We've all been there and it's all G-U-T-S!

UPDATE:

-Ran 3 mile on sunday out of necessity(hungover)

-Ran 4 miles this morning with the new Calf sleeves. They worked great...they definitely stayed warm throughout the run. No discomfort at all, just a tad bit of tightness an hour after the run(about 1/10 of what I normally deal with). I tried to run harder than I have been and finished running 7:15 pace. I haven't run hard at all since my 5K race a month ago...I'm out of fast running shape.

Did you leave the sleeves on after the run? If not, leave them on until you need to take them off. The studies on them show that they can aid post exercise recovery as well (which is why 2XU sell insanely over priced recovery gear). Post event, I leave them on until I get home and shower up. Same for training. If I can, I leave them on until I shower. After big events, I have a pair of the Sugois that I've slept in if the calves are barking.

goldenchild - :pickle: :headbang: :pickle: That's a solid first race! Well done ...and thanks for a great race report!

benson - sounds like the sleeves are beneficial, which is encouraging.

MAC - you go, man! If the speed feels comfortable, let 'er rip.

Near 80 degrees this a.m. Went to the track as a final hard workout before Sunday's 5 mile race.

eta for the most important part - goldenchild, congrats on the new baby!!!

Thanks. Only have done 1 race so far and that was 3.5mi (25:30). I don't know my max yet - I'd assume it is similar to yours based on what I've seen. I should probably get that sorted out.

Just back from a 5 mile recovery. I realized last night that my legs were a little toasted even after taking the weekend off. Slow miles today seemed to have done the trick as my legs are feeling quite refreshed and I am ready to tackle some more hills tomorrow. It was hot today. 80 when I started and the sun is just blazing off the downtown buildings and concrete. It is amazing how the heat elevates in the middle of the city compared to when I can get away from here.

Ahhh...kid #2, that is fun on your time. :)I still think the slower long runs will do you good in the 5 and 10k events...but it may be a bit different as my focus has been halfs and now a marathon in december.

What was your max on that 3.5? If you left it all out there on that race, it's probably pretty close to your max.

Wow guys... thanks for the nice words and encouragement! I wish I could take the time to reply to each of you individually, but I don't have much time to spend on here.

And thanks for the well wishes on the new addition!

After the newborn dust settles and I get back into the gym, I'm going to start coming up with a new routine that will get me better prepared to improve my PR on the 5k. I hear that there are a bunch of events coming up, so I don't anticipate finding one to fit my schedule.

Gotta run... thanks again everyone!

Don't hate me Ned but I forgot it on race day. I'm not sure it would have been reflective of my max though as I spent a good portion of of the race weaving in and out of people (there were 13k runners). I think I had a harder effort in me.eta - went back through my garmin and the highest hr i have recorded so far is 193.

Golden - Congrats on the new baby, that is awesome. nice race as well.

I did a little over 3 miles at 9:40 on the treadmill today. I am cautiously optimistic that my right foot is improving. I will say my legs are killing me but killing me in a good way. I did a bunch of lunges with weights on Sunday and man am I sore. I was swearing at tri man towards the end of my lunge session. :P

Did a pseudo tempo run in the near 80 degree temps last evening (and dew point in the upper 60's).

Started with a 9:45 warmup, banged out 3 miles of 7:27, 7:28, and 7:28 before doing a 8:56 cool down mile.

It was hot, my legs were tired, and i was huffing and puffing.

I'm taking the next two days off before working on a long run on Friday.

Have a great day!

Congrats Golden, we have one heading our way too any day now.

Its so freaking hot here I can't hardly stand it. Its incredible what the heat does to the HR.

Differences here between morning runs and late afternoon runs....

Sat. 6 am - 4.7 miles @ 9:09 avg hr 150.

Yesterday afternoon 5pm 4.0 @ 9:54 avg hr 165. My HR hit 186, it felt like it too. I was struggling.

I'm really just trying to maintain a decent level of fitness this summer before locking into marathon mode come late August, but holy hell its hot.

Easy 4 yesterday, 34 mins, legs still felt surprisingly good - today too.

Might be passing on the sprints today and tomorrow though, it's over 90 and supposed to be tomorrow too - my only opportunity to run both days will be about 5:30. Thinking I'm going to axe the last long run before the race as I really want to do the sprints one more time and do a 5k trial of the course - only day I can do this is Tuesday. Thinking sprints and an 8 miler Friday + Sunday would be a bad idea. Going to shoot for a hard 6 today but do it on my 4 mile route so if the heat gets to me I can cut the run short.

Up early again today. Was steamy and near 80 already (in Buffalo freaking NY). Did 6 with 4 tempo. My garmin was acting funny after letting it charge overnight. I noticed it seemed to skip past the "locating satellites" screen when I turned it on. Started out on my run and it was showing a 12min pace with a 170 something HR. I stopped briefly after hitting about 1/2 mile and tried to power on and off. This seemed to correct the pace and HR but it still seemed to skip past the locating satellites. This screwed up my laps but the rest of the run seemed to be recorded correctly on the watch. Weird.

Going by memory and with the jacked up first mile - 9:05, 7:19, 7:19, 7:23, 7:20, 8:46. HR was in the low 170's in miles 4-5.

7 miler today...

83 when I started...88 by the finish.

10:05 first mile and HR creeping up to 158

10:45 last mile with the HR hitting 178 on the last hill.

Just a brutal day to run, but was happy to finish the 7 that I set out to do.

The legs felt a bit sluggish for the first time in a while. They had been holding up well and it was the HR and heat that was getting to me more.

Today the legs were struggling at the end.

4 mile recovery tomorrow that I hope to do about 5:30am.

Thats a great tempo in good conditions, let alone in this heat.

Quick product review on Ben Gay Zero Degrees. This stuff is the ####. It's long lasting like Tiger Balm, topically feels like BioFreeze and has the added touch of being able to place it in the freezer. I had a serious case of the DOMS yesterday after Sunday's Oly and an ### kicker of a massage on Monday. This stuff provides instant relief. I am hoping Costco sells this stuff in bulk soon. The kids going though it like crazy. It is recital week for my daughter. She has used it the last few nights to alleviate soreness. My son has used it the last two nights to locally ice his throwing arm after baseball games (and, hit got smoked in the back of his thigh by a pitch and was using it on there).

Had some fun on the bike yesterday riding with friends...

Tell me about it. I despise country music, but I took one for the team and went to Country USA last night. Unfortunately (or fortunately, I guess, haha), I was with one, so I had to be sneaky, but still....OMG. :jawdrop: Of course, that same warm weather has made running a real #####. Did 5 miles on Monday with temp at 75°F and dewpoint 73°F, and I could barely breathe. Yesterday was even worse (91°F/66°F), and I gutted out 8 miles. I'd really like to start ramping up my mileage again, but this swamp-like weather is making it very difficult. Hitting the trail again on Friday afternoon for another 3-hour run.

3miles the AM before bad heat, and will do another 3 tomorrow.

Heading to beach for 4 day weekend.

Found an 8k race on Saturday i can hit up

GB finding races around vacations :)

Stay safe out there in these temps guys.

I don't know how much I mentioned my cuz who I would run with, but last 6 weeks he started complaining about chest pains, then shortness of breath, then coughing etc...

I would be on his ### to go to doc, he finally went like 3 weeks ago, doc did an EKG and said he thinks he may have asthma and to go get a chest xray. A couple more 5ks in the 30's (he was like 25-27 range) he still had not gone to get xray, well he is in hospital with a collapsed lung now.

Stay healthy and when you have warning signs...go get checked out people, he was an idiot with all the signs, but don't be an idiot.

What's the commercial..."don't attend you're own funeral as a guy named Bill Shiftly"

Race stalking from last Saturday's sweaty Baltimore 10-miler is in
That sets the bar really, really high. Good grief.
Had some fun on the bike yesterday riding with friends...

It was on here...

Dist: 15.01 mi (0:37:07)

Min Avg Max

Power 0 219.7 694 W
Killing it again. I did my normal 30 miler yesterday - 201w average (the first 8 miles are a long rollout - averaged 225w or so on the last 22 miles). 19.1mph average on a course with 2,050ft. of climbing. Added on this little beast, which is a favorite sufferfest hill around here. A nice little 7% slope for a mile or so.Oh, by the way, anyone want to take the Hotter than Hell Marathon on? Grue? Just think - it's flat! Then again, it is on July 1 in New Orleans...

I think it moved.
:lmao: :goodposting: Got a solid 5 in tonight in 33 mins. Aimed for 6, but the 90+ degree heat got the best of me. Got the first 3 done in about a brisk pace (hit 3 mile mark in under 20 mins) then noticed the heart rate spiking, my throat drying up, breathing heavy, and constantly catching myself looking down instead of up on mile 4. Nutted up and headed home early but still managed to finish strong. Mile 4 was north of 7:00 but the rest were right around 6:30.

Would it be creepy to say that I found her name in the results from her bib number, went to Athlinks to find other races she's done, and then looked to see if there were race photos from any of them?Yeah, that would be creepy, so I won't say I did that.

Plus there were no other good pics from any of those races.

Great run tonite. Plan was to keep it easy as Saturday is quickly approaching and stay in zone 1 127-137 hr. Was expecting 10:00 to 10:15 pace.

mile 1 - 9'46", 130 hr, -10 ft

mile 2 - 9'37", 133 hr, 0 ft

mile 3 - 9'41", 136 hr, +20 ft

mile 4 - 9'39", 134 hr, +20 ft

mile 5 - 9'29", 135 hr, +10 ft

mile 6 - 8'38", 134 hr, -40 ft

Actually got stronger and the same heart rate as the run progressed. Not sure where that last mile came from.

Weighed in at 208 before the run. I've cut 7 lbs this week for Saturday's century. Would like to knock off another two lbs by Friday morning and then hydrate like heck and weigh-in at 208 on Saturday morn.

nice run  looks like you were on cruise control

It is brutally hot here. I had to bail on my run yesterday but just ran for 40 minutes. I forgot my Garmin and felt utterly and completely lost as I was running. Its unreal how I have come to rely on it. No idea how long I ran for or what my HR was.
