Ran a 10k in June (5 Viewers)

I've just been sort of tangentially following this thread as I've been training for my "A" race, but my "A" race is right around the corner (Saturday) and I'm starting to get the yips. Heading to Panama City Beach tomorrow afternoon for Ironman Florida - my first Ironman. Wish me luck

I don't mind cold and wind, but I really don't think there's anything worse than 40 degrees and raining. I'd rather run in sub zero temp's than a cold rain. Looks like I might have a break late afternoon, going to prep myself and hope to get out for a quick few miles if there's a break.

Good luck! If you know your number please post so we can look you up. ----On my end a solid end of month has been worked. Finally got back in the pool - 1:09 100, 2:32 200, etc. Same as always. Added some 25yd sprint efforts - ~12 second sprints with no breathing. Not Cesar Cielo, but still - :boxing: Nice 5 mile run today doing 8:12s or so. Wind was really up - love running in the wind. Had a blast. Gonna try for a trainer session tonight and a 7 mile run tomorrow to finish out October.

Tell me about the no breathing 25 yard sprints. What is the objective/benefit? I never tried to go a length without a breath and wonder if I can. I am back in the pool on a regimented 2 nights a week schedule.

There is no physiological benefit to hypoxic sets. Less breathing = faster, though. (Which is why in the 50 free in the Olympics pretty much all those guys don't breathe). I was aiming for balls out sprints. And I wanted to see if I could do it. Answer:

We went out the night before for a mexican meal and tried to relax.
You must be some sort of superhero to eat mexican and do a 70.3 without assploding...(Edit: and who knew ### won't pass the filters but assploding does?!? Awesome.)
:goodposting:Nice report, HM. Glad you had a good experience. But you might re-think your choice of pre-race meals. (Edit: In fairness, though, if it works during training and it worked during this event, by all means stick with it).
When I say mexican I had veggie enchiladas and some corn chips. I am a vegetarian so it wasn't like I was having crispy tacos laden with beef grease and cheese! :)

Kind of what I figured  If I try these, I'll have to be sure I start at the deep end and end in the shallow section in case I pass out. It'll make it easier for the teen age guard to rescue me (like she'd look up from her iPhone and even notice I'm drowning).

I'm much less impressed now. :P

Getting rescued by the local teenage swim girl sounds like a pretty good enticement to try them. :excited:

On the subject of wind and running, I noticed during kids soccer games on big fields that a 10 mph wind in one direction gives the team with the wind at their back on offense a big advantage, and a 20 mph wind at the back is a huge advantage and 25mph + and up is basically insurmountable. It didn't seem like the wind should be such a big advantage until I realized that its the DIFFERENCE between what the offense and defense sees that matters ... a 25 mph wind at the back of the offense and 25 mph in the face of the defense is equivalent to the defense running into a 50 mph headwind wind and the offense being in still air, or conversely, the offense with a 50 mph tailwind and the defense playing in still air.I don't know how this relates to running long distances, except maybe start out with the wind at your back and tack back like a sailboat? :nerd:

Nothing scientific here, but I think my best runs are when I get headwinds and uphills out of the way in the first 60-70% of the run. I'm the type that battles and then just tries to hang on and it's a lot easier to do that when you have the wind at your back or are going downhill.Today wasn't too terrible in Cleveland, definitely happy I did this run today and not yesterday though. Rained the whole way, but never really poured and the wind wasn't awful, probably between 10 and 20 the whole way. Did 4 miles in 30 mins and kept my HR under 80% max. Recovery run tomorrow, off day Thurs, and plan is for last experiment day Friday. Want to get it in ASAP so I can do a 5k time trial next week and have 10 days rest before the race.

Wear your HRM during the time trial and the race. Hopefully you'll find a real mHR. I'd be very leery of running/training based on HR that was derived from a generic calc. :2cents:

Plan to for the time trial, probably will need to give it back before the race though, I'll do my best to drag my feet though  . If I had to guess right now I'd say I could go north of 200, hopefully I'll get a better idea a week from today.

I had intentions of doing a 45 min tempo run. I got on the treadmill and gradually increased speed for 15 mins. At 15 mins I I went to 8:27 pace and I did that for 15 mins. I was feeling gassy  At 30 mins I started to decrease my speed and I wanted to decrease all the way to 45 mins but then it happened. I always felt like it was just a matter of time. Today was the day I sharted on the treadmill in LA Fitness :bag:

I knew I was gassy but I thought I could make the full 45 mins. At 35 mins something just did not seem right. I hit the stop button and started the fast walk to the locker because I suddenly felt like I was gonna assplode. The smell was not good and I am hoping I made it through quick enough that the odor could not be pinned on me. I got to the locker room bathroom and sure enough I had sharted :X

Took me a while to clean up and I just threw the chonies away. I was pretty stealthy and I dont think anyone knows.

It was nasty. I seem to have GI issues when running in the afternoon. I have had several close calls. I may just start taking immodium at noon.

The good news was an 8:27 pace for 15 mins is really good for me.

I sometimes have GI issues with afternoon workouts (was going to say runs  ). I tend to be very regular in the morning, and I think the afternoon workouts accelerate the process building up for the next a.m. I guess you just need to stay alert to that. (Don't know how gruecd manages so many long double workouts without issues.)NICE job on the pacing! That would have been worth posting in and of itself!!

5 miles in the crisp sunshine today gets me to a miserable 73 miles for the October, with 26.2 of those on one run. Here's a to a better November and December. :banned:

It wouldn't be a run if I wasn't drop gas most of the way. I just consider it extra propulsion.

The technical term is crop dusting if I am not mistaken.

I'm going through some weird post half ironman depression or something. been very tired, hungry and somewhat down. this normal?
Yes, not dissimilar to post-partum depression, actually. You dedicate yourself to something for so long, and then suddenly it's done and over with, and you're left without direction. Pick your next goal race. You'll feel better.

I actually do waaaaay better in that department in the afternoon. In the morning, I usually go a couple of times pre-run, and I still end up stopping mid-run half the time once everything gets loosened up. In the afternoon, it's usually one-and-done before I head out, and no problems once I'm out there.

Totally normal. In addition to what gruecd said, you're probably used to having your body flooded with endorphins all the time thanks to your training regimen. Take those away and a little degression is natural.

:goodposting: Both of you. I'll add, that if you can, find a race that has an added element of fun, go find one (or more) of them. While I love the intensity of the "season" I also really like the racing that can be had this time of year. Trail Racing season is in full swing and the Turkey Trots are close too. AND, it is most appropriate to wear swag from the HIM to races to show off a bit. Consider it a victory lap of sorts.

Hell, I get a little depressed during the taper before a big race, probably for this exact reason...

Yup. I posted about this last year. I was pretty bummed out. A good link here.

Sounds like a plan. I'm going to sign up for Ironman Florida for November 2013. Registration is this Sunday. Appreciate the advice.

Hmmm. Quiet around here today. Took a long lunch and ran 10 miles at just over 8:00 pace. I hate how my legs feel during the taper...

Rest day tomorrow, and then a 2-hour super easy trail run on Saturday with a buddy. It'll probably end up being 12 miles or so. Another rest day on Sunday.

Looks like the NYC Marathon is a go for Sunday. Interesting listening to the back-and-forth as to whether or not it's the right decision. It's being broadcast live on ESPN2 if anyone wants to watch it.

I sympathize with the people who trained for this, but given how much of a nightmare the logistics for this race are anyway, I think I'd rather just have a deferral. That's easy to say when you didn't actually train for it though.

Question - I read somewhere that if you defer you still hav to pay the entry again. Is this true?

No idea. Honestly though, I don't think I'd care that much if it guaranteed me a place in next year's field. My thought is that I'm already out a non-refundable plane ticket, so what' another registration fee? Especially when you consider that they could just as easily cancel the race altogether in which case I'm also out the registration fee too.

Yes. Same as when they offered people the opportunity to defer out of this year's Boston Marathon because of the heat.

Now that I think about it, I don't think that's an unreasonable policy. The race directors have some fixed and nonrecoverable costs they have to cover, and if you're taking up (imaginary) room in this year's field and (for real) next year's field, it's not unfair to bill you for those costs each year.

What sort of resources are they using for the race? If they're taking emergency vehicles, police, etc I think it's a bad idea to hold the race. Better to use those resources on the search and rescue or cleanup efforts.

They said they're going to use a lot more private contractors this year to minimize this.

There may be other factors coming into play here. Does the NYCM pay appearance fees to the top runners? I'm guessing if they don't hold the race they're out the broadcast fees ESPN would be paying?

I ran tonight for only the second time since my marathon. I have been trying to get 100% healthy but the calf that I hurt (strain?) just before the marathon has had a lot of lingering soreness. I just couldn't take waiting anymore, so tonight I ran 4 miles with the last one at 6:25 pace. Soreness was mild to moderate which was better than at marathon time when it was more at a moderate pain level. It didn't hurt worse at all when I picked up the pace. Sitting here typing this, it is sorer now than what it was earlier today but it's not too bad.

All I have on the running agenda is a 10K on Thanksgiving and, of course, Boston next year. The 10K is out of state with family and I'd really, really like to run well. I'm thinking about ignoring the injury and doing a lot of running these next three weeks to prepare for the 10K. It didn't seem to get worse by running the marathon so maybe it's just about dealing with the pain and trying to manage it? Maybe I shouldn't worry about being completely healthy?

I know it's hard to give other people injury advice but I'm really not sure what to do. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Anyone ever deal with anterior talofibular ligament pain in the ankle? Mine has been steadily getting sorer over the last few days and I don't want it to turn into something worse.

Just, I'd think one attempt at a good, hard run would tell you what you need to know. If pain is just general soreness afterward than I'd resume training. If its worse or seems to be sharper then shut it down for a bit and see how it feels in 3-5 days

C'mon, Jux. You know better than that. Your calf was sore, so you went and busted out a sub-6:30 mile??
