Ran a 10k in June (2 Viewers)

That and keep track of my friend Kyle (#211) run Western States.
Buddy finished in 25:54. Great, great race from him.

BnB - BTW this is the guy organizing the shirt thing that was delayed. Let's just say he is a bit distracted right now and the wait continues. ;)
Awesome, congrats to your buddy!

Just like last year there was a runner who made it onto the track before the 30:00:00 cut off, but not across the finish line in time. Brutal.

Inspired by my friend Erika's 11th place finish at Western States and 2nd straight silver buckle, and even more so by all the people that were still out there this morning, I headed out for a 15 mile trail run. It's been hot here, in the high 90s, so headed out the door by 6:00 - and it was still in the mid-70's to 80's the whole time.

But good run, no IT pain, and continuing to push my distances back up. Mixed in some good climbing, much of it on singletrack, ran through some redwoods, and seemed to be the first person out there this morning running along the lake.

15 weeks to my 50 miler. I finally put my training plan down in writing yesterday, and I've got some work to do.

Step-back training week for me:

M: 3 miles easy

T: SRD

W: 4 x 25 push-ups, sit-ups, squats, lunges

Th: 5 miles easy

F: 7 miles w/ 8 x 800m (3:12 to 3:15)

S: 7 miles comfortable (8:18/mi) after arriving at our Michigan cottage for a full week vacation.

S: 16 miles w/14 pace miles (7:54/mile, 155 HR)

38 miles; solid workouts on Friday and Sunday. Today's pace feels good for a marathon pace.

Annyong - I have a variety of socks. I think a key is whether you want thick or thin socks ...which affects shoe size. I'd say - be consistent.

Very uneventful race this morning compared to last week. 10k, 53:41(based on my watch as official times arent posted yet). My sister was in town from MN and we ran it together. Nice course pretty much along lake michigan the whole way. Temp was great, lots of volunteers cheering people on, very well marked, no bottlenecks. One of the few times this year I have just truly enjoyed running.

Was very nervous I was going to be too sore from the basement work I did yesterday, but wasn't affected at all.

Nice job para!

My Garmin 305 has finally crapped out, it keeps shutting itself off during runs. I tried the hard reset - and it shut itself off twice while I tried to set it up again afterward.

Anything other than another Garmin I should consider as a replacement? I need GPS and HRM.

TIA

Well done! Hopefully those enjoyable days will become more frequent.

Hey gang. Just checking in. I am in Nashville about to go for a run. Did 6.7 in Memphis yesterday and celebrated my 50th birthday by seeing Bob Dylan here last night. June mileage was 241, which is excellent. Looks like everybody is doing well.

Duck, my 305 crapped out a couple of months ago and I got the 610. I am impressed so far.

Great job Para!

A 110 or 210 would do fine. Both work well for what he wants.
Any thoughts on battery life among various models? Remember, my next race is going to take me 10+ hours, and I'm hoping to run one next year that will take me nearly 30.

i just got the 110 and i believe the manual says 8hr battery life.

Talk to me about socks. After getting properly fitted for shoes, I still came out of my long run with some blisters.
Anything without cotton works for me. I buy champion brand at Target because they are cheap and do the job. They have a few different running socks, most are polyester and nylon blends. I get the dry fit ones that are very thin and tight fitting. 4 pair for $8.99 last time I was there. I've run a full in them without any body glide on the feet with no issues.

SFDuck - i'm pretty sure the 210 is only 8 hours as well. I think the 310 might jump up to 20 hours.

Maybe a stupid question but here goes - I've been wearing an IT band strap since I started running again a few months ago. I don't know if it is really doing anything but I haven't had any issues and it is only mildly annoying to wear. My question - I have a race coming up on Thursday (10k) - is it a bad idea to ditch the strap for the race? As I mentioned it isn't terribly uncomfortable to wear but it is a minor hinderance and I'd like to do as well as I can in this race.

The only versions that maximize battery life like that are the 310 and 910. Nothing (AFAIK) will get 30. The 310 and 910 aim for 20 (to get an athlete through an IM).

There were just some refurb 310s on ebay for $135. Sold out now, but keep a look out.

Never, ever try anything new on race day. Its on the running 10 Commandments. I would wait until after to ween yourself off of it.

Sure, go ahead and ditch the strap for the first time on race day. While you're at it, race day is also a great opportunity to experiment with that pair of shoes you've wanted to try out. And if you've never worn compression socks before, now is the time.

Seriously, if you've been wearing a strap all this time, it would be dumb not to wear it on race day. Races put your body under extreme stress. Don't not wear the strap unless you absolutely know that you don't need it anymore.

5 very easy miles today, with 10 on deck for tomorrow. We're not going anywhere over the 4th and the weather is supposed to be nice, so I should have no problem working in some intervals later in the week.

I actually went and bought some Tek Gear wicking socks from Kohls for 3/$10 so we will see how it works this week.

Ok, now talk to me about Body Glide. Never used it, but I'm open to anything since I'd rather not have blisters all year long.

It's fantastic for preventing chafing. When it gets hot, I have to use it my thighs for anything more than 6 or so miles.

I've never had an issue with blisters, but my guess is that changing to a decent pair of socks will help a lot with those.

I use it for chafing. I've never had blisters but my hydration belt puts a tramp stamp above my ### if I don't use body glide. Also need it on the inside of the thighs and on my lats where my arms rub and of course the nips. Without body glide I'll chafe after 9 miles or so. One thing to note is it stops working after about 12-14 miles so for very long runs you need to reapply. During a marathon hopefully they have vaseline on the course around mile 15 and you can just take that.

Where are you running at while here?

Heard the Dylan show on the river was a good one.

Ive used it on my feet with good success as well.

I don't use as much on the thighs anymore since I have gone exclusively to wearing compression shorts.

I will still throw it on there for longer runs though in the summer heat and on race days (also worked great for those hot sticky days at Disney with the family)

Haha I did say it was a stupid question. I have gone without it a handfull of times without issue but yeah I guess it would be pretty dumb to do now.

5.5 easy this morning. I think I'm going to rest the next 2 days before the race.

Check out the Suunto line.

For the life of me I can't get my Garmin 305 to import into Strava. Hangs/crashes Chrome every time. Friends on Strava think I'm a lazy ###.

I find if you apply enough, you don't have to reapply. I've done two 10-leg survival triathlons that included 3 swims and took 5 hours to do and a single application of Glide was all I needed with zero issues. I trick I've learned is to save the sticks when they get down to the plastic. There is a ton of Glide still in there. I use a Q-Tip to get the Glide out and pre-Glide my tri shoes so I can run sockless after the swim legs. I Glide the heel, arch and the area around the toes. Unless I get a ton of sand in the shoe, this works out great.

Re the question about socks, I used to be a big fan of double walled socks and really like the Wright Sock brand (and these are my sons favorites). My new favorites are made by Smartwool. These seem to really keep the blisters away in my trail shoes on junk terrain. They do seem to wear out quicker than regular socks, but well worth it. Plus, I have a crush on several of the stoner chicks that work at Moosejaw.

still recovering from some ITBS trouble and my annual golf trip/beerfest. no running for the weekend, but 108 cart-path-only holes in 4 days on a mountain golf course destroyed my legs. woke up 2 nights with cramps in both calves (apparently beer isn't the best hydration choice).

i slugged through a couple of miles today but still felt the IT band slightly. just a twinge, but still there. to say i'm a little worried about my first ever 10k coming up on thursday would be an understatement. i'm thinking of dropping my goal pace from about 9:00 min/mile to 10:00, although i read somewhere that running faster can delay the IT pain. maybe i need to "sand" the hell out of it and see if i can hold on

Run like you're on fire, you'll be heaving so hard at the end you won't notice a silly little ITB issue

Track workout today.

Pretty excited about this workout. Other than the 2nd 800m, I've never really had splits this tight. I felt damn good.

Where do I purchase this "Body Glide"? They dont have it at Target. Do I have to go to the shady porn store off the highway in the middle of nowhere?

Either that or a running or cycling specific store. But I'd go with the porn store first - much more fun conversation with the sales person.

Been slow going here the past few days...little bit of achilles tightness (plus ended up trout fishing early saturday morning instead of running).

Hoping to get back at it tonight if the achilles cooperates.

Getting a bit tough though as its either TM runs or humid night running with the kids not doing any camps this week.

Next 2 weeks get even more complicated as my wife heads to India...and I head up to Wisconsin with the kids for a few days with the family.

Summer of Speed!!! Great workout, Hang10

Ironically, ****'s always has it in stock and they used to carry a brand developed by Triathlete Hunter Kemper that I like more than Glide, but I can't seem to find it anymore. It was a grey stick with red writing, cannot remember the name.

Mission

I just bought some the otherday...I prefer it as well. Like you, couldn't find it for a while til last week.

Hang10 - fantastic speed work! Another variation of that (an old Jim Ryan workout): 400, 400, 200, 200 with one minute rests; 400m walk-around; rinse, repeat. Regardless - you rocked it!

Same for me. I wear compression shorts and use body glide on the thighs. Of course, I'm fat.

Many ultra aid stations do have vaseline I've found, although I got a couple of small sample size Body Glides that came in schwag bags that I carry with me now for issues that crop up between aid stations. That saved my trail marathon last October as I developed a brutal blister that made it hard to even walk - sat down, lubed it up, and was able to get moving again.

I am back from Flagstaff. I got one 4.3 mile run in. It was awesome. I could see moving to Flagstaff some day. It is a very laid back atmosphere, right up my alley.

Yeah but I'm sure you know the winters are not so good. Seems people get stuck there a lot because of rain or snowstorms.

Misery index been high...yesterday was close to 160, was sucking wind a bit on my return leg. 144 at the moment, about to head out for a 5 miler. Anyone in the 170s this week?

About that 120 not miserable index, I was short on time but I needed to get a run in since I took off Sunday and Monday to get drunk and play golf. Decided I would try a quick 5k and see if I have gotten any faster since my 5k PR 22:48 earlier this year. Well I switched back to my Frees for this run since I've been running exclusively in my Mizuno Precisions since I bought them 2 weeks ago. Clocked my 3.1 miles today at 21:52 which is nearly a minute faster than I was before! Can't tell you guys how excited I was for that. It's nice to see my speed progress so much since I've been concentrating on building mileage most of the summer. Thanks for all the advice I've gotten from all of you guys.

Annyong and Tri-man, do you guys want to run Waterfall Glen one weekend morning in the next two or three weeks? Seems like Annyong is ready.

Nice! You will be even faster with the adrenaline and other runners pushing you in a race.
