Ran a 10k in June (2 Viewers)

Thanks for all the encouragement. So what's a good training plan if my next half marathon is in mid-March? Don't want to lose the momentum I've built up to this point and plan to continue running several times during the week (maybe 3-5 miles 2-3x a week?)...I could use some guidance on prep over the next 4-5 months though and would welcome any advice or tips that might help me improve.

A few of us use the Hal Higdon training programs ...easy to find on-line. 3 runs a week is good (I'd lean toward 4 rather than 2). Try to make one run a long run. Back off a bit every third week. Especially for the next couple months, just keep it slow and let the benefits of the long, slow run do their thing in terms of building your aerobic engine. This is a great time, also, to mix in some strength training and other cross training.

Sand, if you're stuck in a hotel ...great time to do lunges up and down the long hotel hallway! You can :finger: me about it later.

Nice job BoomBoom. Taking water is a learned experience (one I haven't mastered yet). I gave up trying to do it on the run and just walk through gulping it down so I at least make sure I get some.

Nice job BoomBoom. I turn in to Ted Stryker when trying to grab a drink during a race.

With my current schedule I'm going to have to do most of my running in the dark these days. Looking at some vests - anyone have this one?

http://www.runningwarehouse.com/descpage.html?PCODE=AMPXLED

I'm not sure if the LED lights would be annoying? The same vest without the LEDs is about 14 bucks cheaper.
Sell them at Walmart for $11. I personally sport one similar to this that has been on loan to me from work for about a year as I continue to demo the product to make sure it holds up to the rigors of training.

Do any of you guys buy your gu's, chomps, energy beans, etc. in bulk online? If so, where?
Bought a box of Gu gels on Amazon cheap last year, still have 5 left. Don't use them much but agree wit everyone on the Hammer Gels. The Gu ones sit like lead in my stomach, Hammer Gels seem to go down smooth and not cause any issues.

Which half? Where?

Do any of you run sockless? I've been doing it for a couple weeks and I'm a big fan so far. However, I haven't run more than four miles without them yet. Downside (rapid shoe deterioration, funky feet, potential blisters at greater distance) seems pretty high, but I really hate the feel of sweaty socks.

First half marathon under my belt. Ran it on Sunday, weather conditions were upper 40's at the start and nice crisp morning. Between my training setbacks with foot pain and only having run 10 miles max, I figured the last 3 miles were going to be my biggest challenge...and they were. Definitely a lot mental. The course was relatively flat the first 5 miles and I was pacing along at my usual 9 min/mile clip. Around mile 4 I grabbed a water cup and tried to drink while jogging and practically choked myself, so I decided I would stop and chug at all future drink locations.

Miles 5-7.5 were on a decline, and running miles 7.5-10 up a hill were pretty brutal. I was gassed by mile 10 and had fallen off my pace quite a bit. Had a little arch pain but nothing I couldn't get through and really the worst pain I felt was in my quads around mile 12. They tightened up pretty bad but I stretched a little and powered through it.

I told my wife I was gunning for 2:15 because it was my first and didn't want to be disappointed if I didn't finish in a certain time. I finished in 2:15:15. Happy to have finished, and also know I have a LOT of room for improvement. Need to mix in some hill training and plan to run at least 2 half-marathons in 2014. Thanks for the words of encouragement and training advice/dealing with other issues.
Nice job!!

Now that the first one is under your belt you have a time to try and beat.

I am a fan of Hal Higdons plans. They really helped and I found they were not overwhelming.

Agree. If you want to be overwhelmed, do a Pfitz.

No although I am friends with an ultra guy who does it and his feet are flat tore up after a 100 miler. Have no idea why you would want to do this but then I don't get the whole barefoot running thing either. The shoe degradation alone would be enough for me. If I'm dropping $100+ on a pair of shoes (typically x 2 for rotation) I want them to last as long as possible. I've also struggled enough with blisters to not want to add another potential avenue for them to creep back into my training but to each their own. Good luck with that.

So much stupid in this...here is a tip to here Preacher...sit this girl down and explain that a bib number is not taking the mark of the beast.

Thats just for starters.
I don't have a problem with her not running. Lot of folks would do the same round these parts. She's being true to her conviction, kind of applaud her for it.

Then...a whole lot of stupid there too.

Being true to one's convictions is fine and all...but if someone wants to do that, they should be correct in their convictions.

Im not talking about a differing of Christian vs. Non-Christian....Im talking about getting the theology correct in the first place.

The number 666 in this context has no actual meaning...NONE.

Most high school meet officials are notoriously hardheaded and most are on power trips. I know there are exceptions, but when you read stories like this 9 times out of 10 it's just some moron(s) who didn't listen in the first place and then come up with some excuse like "we didn't hear that was her reason in the first place" when they find themselves potentially in trouble.

Congrats Boom, and good luck to Mrs. Fubar this weekend!

Three+ weeks post-race for me and I'm really happy to be feeling pretty much normal again. I've come out of the other couple of ultras I've done pretty beat up and even injured, that doesn't seem to be the case this time. I haven't started a real training program yet, just having fun getting out on the trails running - 8 on Sunday, 6 yesterday, 7 today. Tomorrow will involve six hours of putting on a tailgate at Stanford for 30-40 people prior to the Duck game - so it may be Saturday before I get back out again.

Maybe she just doesn't like triangular and abundant numbers?

Speed work today. 1M, 1/2, 1/4, 1/4, 1/2, 1M with 3 minutes between

1: 6:32

1/2: 2:49

1/4: 1:12

1/4: 1:13

1/2: 2:57

1: 6:24

Sloppy 10 miles today. We got a couple of inches of snow yesterday, and it was all in the process of melting off while I was running today over an extended lunch break, so I was dodging puddles and putting up with slush most of the way. Great day for a run otherwise -- mid-30s, sunny, and no wind to speak of.

Sub-5 minute pace on the 400's?? You sandbagging the rest of the workout?

When I plug the 1:12 quarter into http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/

it gives me an estimate 2:38 1/2 and 5:52 mile. I guess I was slow on the 1/2s, but for the miles it's worth noting that while the 1/4s and 1/2s were on the track, the miles were on the road from and back to work. It also gives me a 20:22 on the 5k which I'm hoping to beat next weekend.

Another Achilles tendon question for you guys...

Should I be completely pain free? Somebody mentioned the danger of starting back before it is healed and ending up right back at square one. In no way do I want that to happen. For the most part it feels ok, but every now and then it hurts. Shut a run down on Sunday because of it, but I was on my feet (in dress shoes) for 12+ hrs/day for 3 straight days before that and I think that aggravated it some.

It definitely doesn't hurt like it did, but also doesn't feel as strong as it did pre-injury and there is an occasional ache. Am I asking for re-injury running now, or will it get better and stronger as I run more?

Just remember we're talking a 16 year old girl here. Not the deepest thinkers on the planet (then again I was a complete idiot at 16, too). Not a terrible or brilliant decision - just one driven by emotion, which teenage girls have in abundance. This won't ruin her life in any way, so no biggie.

I do have to say, though, that unlike the worst of bib numbers (666) last year I got the best of numbers - 69. It was like I was the life of the party. So much fun. Anyone who says that 40 year old guys are grown up is full of ####.

I think you're OK starting back slowly, but as soon as you get back from a run, soak your foot up to the calf in a 5-gallon pail of ice water to get the resulting swelling down immediately.

4 mile tempo run at 6:20 pace! :boxing:

Never fatigued during and, once again, only issues post run were hawking up some snot. I'm thinking I want to do a test run next week, see where I am.

So yeah, got a half marathon scheduled for Sunday but haven't really been right since my 10K. I've got this tightness in my left quad that just won't go away. Went to see my sports med doctor yesterday and told me it was likely my psoas. Said I can still run but just need to stretch it out daily. Anyone else experienced anything like this? There's really no pain...it just feels like my left quad is constantly working and tired.

I really hate running sometimes. 1 step forward, 2 steps back.

Well, that sucked.

Don't know what happened but my son (and his JV team) totally crapped the bed, and varsity didn't do much better. Other than the top kid on varsity who ran strong and took 4th with a 16:22, not many guys had a good day and it was kind of a disaster. The top 3 on the JV, including my boy, just wiped out - he finished 3rd on his team behind the usual #4 and 5 guys with a 19:40. His realistic goal had been to go under 19:00. Developed a bad cramp early on and just had no giddy-up. For whatever reason, the team pretty much underperformed across the board.

He's a very mellow kid and I think he just gets too amped up for the bigger meets, adversely affecting his performance.

He was bummed, but he'll bounce back. Considering he had never run before and was looking at the season as off-season conditioning work for crew, I'm proud of all he did. Tomorrow he's doing a 6K on the erg to set a baseline for his winter workouts, and then he starts in earnest on Monday.

My psoas it tight as hell right now and contributing to my lingering hip flexor issues. My MT massaged it last night, which basically consisted of her trying to push her finger directly through my stomach. Pleasant.

I've been feeling rather listless and tight since my race sequence ended (the marathons, then a 5K) ...also a tired feeling. I actually had a great 11 miler last Sunday, including a hard 3 mile pop in the middle (7:16s). But I think my body is trying to convince me to back off and rest for a bit before getting into a steady, but easy, winter groove. Hang 10, you had a lot of hard training and great racing over recent months ...your body might be seeking some rest as well.

That does suck, but he has an awesome two years ahead of him. Can't remember if I asked this before, is he running track in the spring or is rowing a spring sport? I've been able to find 6 indoor open track events over the winter for my son and he is really excited about them. More so the relays than individual events. He has already begun to talk to his team mates to get relay teams set up. The first event in early December has a coed 4x800 and its a true open event for all ages. He will likely run the open 400 at that event too. Its at the University of Michigan's indoor track. The 5 other events are only for high school aged kids and are held a local community college. If your son is going to run track, I'd suggest Googling up events in your area.

His school doesn't have indoor or spring track. Rowing is a spring sport, and he'll spend the entire winter on the erg and lifting - though I have told him he has to run at least 3 times a week and maybe more, at least until the spring crew season really gets rolling.

One of the cool things about his team, and another indicator about how awesome the coach is, is that most guys on the team don't think of cross country as their main sport. It's just fun and keeps them in shape - on varsity, the #3 guy is a D III hockey recruit and the #4 guy is a national prep wrestling champ who has already committed to a D I school for next year. That being said, the four-time defending champ school who breezed to title #5 yesterday is a track factory, and they totally outclassed us. Most of the guys on the team that won yesterday will move to indoor track workouts Monday.

My son says he's totally committed to cross country next fall and is already talking about running 50 or more miles weekly this summer. And he loved the Half Marathon they ran at midseason so much that he's kind of interested in trying to run a marathon....

Decided to use November to focus on speed with a 5k on the 16th and a 10k in early December. Swam today, 2500 yards with the main set 10x100 (just) under 1:30, rest 30 seconds. Added 500 kick, 500 pull, 200 warm up and 300 cool down.

Wife goes out of town for four days this weekend, so strength, core, and some elliptical will be all I can do unless I'm able to get out for a run before she leaves tomorrow.

Sorry to hear, but I heard about this turkey trot that's gotten fairly big in recent years if he wants another shot at finishing the year on a good note.

Two more days until disney half marathon. My sister is pretty sick, so we will just be taking it easy. I think that will make the rest of the trip more enjoyable too and I wont be worried about walking too much on saturday at the parks before the race then either. I think Acer had recommended doing that anyway, so maybe a blessing in disguise.

Putting myself on the shelf this week with what I think is Metatarsalgia. I noticed the bruised feeling under my big toe last week. It was more annoying than anything, and actually feels better when running versus walking. It's not getting any better and hurts pretty bad when I walk on the kitchen floor. Something's not right, so I'm playing it safe and getting aggressive with RICE.
This stupid thing has come out of nowhere... Wed night I noticed that ache in the ball of my foot again, so I've shut it down immediately. Thankfully I recognized it a lot sooner than I did back in April/May, so I will be fine. Just need to chill and take it easy. It's maybe a 1 on a scale of 1-10 and already feels better today than it did yesterday. Just paranoia more than anything. I have nothing to gain and everything to lose by running right now, so on the shelf I go.

I friggin' hate taper madness :hot:
