Gotta say, there is no run better than one that is half on icy sidewalks and the rest in foot plus snow drifts. Hello, 2014!
sorry man. If it helps, it's 50 degrees here. But I wanted to ride early (it was just 40) so it was bike trainer in the garage. I haven't quite warmed up to the idea of riding outside sub 50s.
My limit is 40. But it was sub 40 until well after lunch today. So it will be a trainer ride later.
How does your face do with low 40s and the wind?
Sucks, but as long as I can keep my ears, hands, and feet warm I'm ok. Ears and hands are easy - darn feet are tough to keep warm. Glasses are a must to keep the eyes clear - otherwise they'll water and I can't see a darn thing.
 this statement implies that you'd actually ride without glasses. Horrible idea. You might never get pelted in the eye, but it's a risk I won't take.

Not much action on the trip to Wisconsin.

Just spending time with family and a lot of time with my dad this Christmas.

Tried to take it easy on the knees again too...so we were at a hotel for a few nights (pool with a water slide for the kids and had my niece and nephew over to enjoy the water while it was frigid out).

So did more working out and eliptical stuff int he hotel "gym". not my favorite, but beats that excuse for a treadmill they had. And also beats trying to get out there when it was below zero temps in the morning (including -13 the one day).

..could always do some running in the pool, which is a good workout as you fight the resistance of the water.

Happy New Year, guys, and kudos to those of you who got out there yesterday and got your runs in! For me, just an easy 3-mile NYD fun run with the running club. Ran with my GF and another friend of ours, so it was nice and easy for me. We did the run at 10 AM and had a breakfast buffet afterwards. I organized the event, and it was my first as president of the club. It went really well.

As sho nuff mentioned, it's been unseasonably cold here lately (yes, even by Wisconsin standards). Really makes it hard to get out the door. Hoping to do double-digit mileage this afternoon, but even at 3 PM we're looking at a wind chill of -5°F. Saturday looks decent for my long run, but then on Sunday and Monday we're looking at forecasted high temps of -7°F and -10°F, respectively, and that's the raw air temp. Gross.

I always wear them except on those days that they are more dangerous than keeping them on - mist, fog, super humid weather, etc. I both want to see and not get hit in the eye. But, that said, they are on just about all the time.

First run of 2014 turned kind of tempo-ish yesterday. Like Jux, I have an issue with getting passed on runs and get competitive about it. While I technically didn't get passed yesterday, I was fed a big piece of humble pie. About 2.2 miles into my run and getting comfortable into 7:30s pace I see a tall kid loosening his legs to start a run up ahead. He's wearing a Seahawks Cross Country shirt so I assume he runs for UNC Wilmington? Well, just as I am 4-5 seconds from getting to him, he starts his run. Not that I thought I'd stay with him, but I thought I'd try to keep it sort of close. Uhhh.....NO. Right away he's effortlessly putting a big gap on me. Easily 30+ seconds in a half mile. Then more and more to the point where I only see him if it's a long straightaway. On the 3rd mile split, my Garmin reads 7:05. So in the .8 since I've seen him, I am running sub 7 pace and he's easily going sub 6. From a cold start. Nice. To be young again...Anyway, I gave up on him and was about to turn around soon anyway but since I was already rolling (for me) and felt decent I kept it going for awhile. Did 7.5 miles total with last 10k in 44:15 and last 5 miles in 35:08

Funny enough a friend of mine has been up in Wisconsin for the last week and has put in about 400 miles in on his bike in that weather.

So, is this where I complain about the 48 degree weather I get to run in at lunch?

 I don't usually ride in the fog, too scared of the drivers around here.

Neither do I, but we had some odd weather last year with high humidity. Some mornings it just rolled in well into a ride.

That's what she said.

Happy New Years, fellas!

I've barely been running, but working hard on planks and push-ups. I did manage a decent 6/4 tempo run today @ 7:17. This is the second lowest total mileage I've logged for December @ 91mi. 1,965 for the year.

I'm plateaued at the 90sec planks. I can't seem to get past that number, so I've stuck with doing 90 seconds for the past few days. Finished up W2D3 on the 100 push-ups challenge. I will take test #1 either tomorrow or Thursday depending on the alcohol intake tonight. Hoping to hit 30. :oldunsure:
Woohoo! 32 push-ups. Big jump from the initial test @ 14. :bag:

That keeps me in column 3 for the next 2 weeks. This is where it got tough for me the last time I tried this workout.

The combo of going for a run, planks, and push-ups is a great workout. I'm really trying hard to turn over a new leaf with this crap and not be so run focused. It's going to take a while to find the right balance of workouts. I want to keep trying to get pull-ups going, but I'm struggling trying to juggle everything.

Reading Maffetone's book of Endurance Training. Good read, but his advice of "don't do any anaerobic exercise" during aerobic base training is REALLY difficult to follow. No pushups/pullups/lifting/etc. for two months?

That was the most challenging, exhausting, and rewarding 40 minute 4 mile run ever.

Took me a good hour and a half to recover, most of which was spent hawking up fluids in a steaming hot showe, shoving pizza in my face, while curled up under three blankets on the basement floor.

That. Was. Awesome.

Today's workout.

50 squats

50 pullups

50 walking lunges

50 hanging knees to elbows

5 hand stand pushups

50 situps

5 hand stand pushups

50 squats

50 pullups

26 minutes. Fun stuff.

Seriously, 14?? I bet even noodle-armed tri-man could do more than that... ;)
I wasn't going to say anything, but yes. (and obligatory :finger: :P ) My current sets are based on 30 reps per set. I've been building up a base so that now in the new year I can get back to my Iron Gym pull-up bar. Hang10 does 50 pull-ups?? And hand-stand push-ups?? :tebow:  I'll be happy when my pull-up reps get above 5 per set.

Kicked off 2014 with an epic SDO. Followed it up with 10 on the TM today. Looking at the extended forecast, it doesn't look like I'll be getting outside any time soon. The high on Sunday, for example, is supposed to be -15. The high.

For full disclosure, no, I can't do 50 pullups in a row. The workout involved 2 sets of 50 (100 total). The most I got in a row today was 26.

Oh, that's a tease. For you doing 10 minute miles is what, Pike's Peak?

---

And, just for the record, first run of the year. 45F, 20mph gusts and mist. Awesomeness!

First run of 2014 this morning, 5 miles with 550' gain. This month will be a little tough in that I have a week-long sales kickoff in Atlanta in the middle (late nights with lots of booze and no nearby trails makes for tough training), so I need to make sure I get good, solid mileage in between now and then.

Since NYE I've been having, well I'll call them dreams but they sometimes feel like nightmares, about trudging though the Siskyou Mountains of Southern Oregon in the middle of the night. Sometimes I'm lost. Sometimes the aid station seems to have packed up and disappeared (am I that slow?). There was at least one sasquatch mixed in there somewhere (maybe I'm his aid station meal?). I'm thinking about wearing my HRM to bed to see if I'm staying in MAF while all of this is going on......

Got some cold air and more wind headed your way. It was 60 when I left my house this morning. Right at 40 now. A Bradford Pear just got blown over in our parking lot at work.

A few weeks ago I signed up for the Strava Premium...so far it seems like a waste of $6. Am i missing something on there? Any other guys on this thread on there? Sand is my only friend :bag:

first mile was into the wind through a business district. Terrain was either ice or thigh high drifts with twenty MPH wind blowing snow in my face. Second mile was mostly unshoveled residential neighborhood. Snow was shin high throughout. Third mile was the worst. Unshoveled sidewalk on busy street. Familiar with that thick salty slushy snow that gets kicked up by snow plows? It's the worst to shovel, felt like quicksand to run through. The last mile of unshoveled knee high snow was a welcomed relief after that torture.

I've flirted with the idea of upgrading to Premium, but haven't done it as I'm not clear on the real value. Setting a goal on there? I can do that already without entering it on the site.

Sand is my only friend over there, too. Here's a link to my profile

:hifive:

The reasons to join Premium that I see are if you want a lot of HR analysis (suffer score), bike power analysis, or access to their Sufferfest videos. I haven't bought off on Premium, but I can see the draw. I use a combination of Strava and Veloviewer (which is superb).

That said, if there is anyone else on there that I'm not hooked up with we should get that going. Strava is awesome.

I haven't run all year but I did volunteer at a 14k yesterday. Giving my knee a break until next week then I have about 4 weeks to train for a 50k, perfect

I'll be heading out in an hour or two through the cold and the wind and the snow to a gym treadmill. Wish me luck! Hopefully I can handle the elements when I get out of my car.

Well, geez. I got out there tonight from the car to door and got my ride in. 50 minutes at spin class - tempo type day with long intervals. It hurt like a #####. When we got done it said I spent 63% of my time in Zone 4+.

New Year's Day - did my first run since (according to my Garmin) October 26. Ugh.

3 miles, with my heart pounding so hard it hurt like a hangnail digging into my chest. I'm a good chunk heavier now than I've ever been in my life, and still a little sore 2 days after such a short run.

Oh well, gotta start somewhere.

My 2014 goals are:

Start hanging out in this thread again.

Run 11 miles this week. Run 13 miles next week. Add 2 miles each following week until I'm doing about 35 miles per week at the end of March. Then take stock and figure out what some realistic goals for the rest of the year might be.

8 miles this morning, last mile was all about the cool down, first mile was warm up. That's one thing I'm focusing on this year, proper warm-up and cool down.

146 bpm throughout miles 2-7

Listened to endurance planet with maffetone, think I'll be doing full MAF until March with the trail marathon being the first non MAF event, other than an APFT next week.

Fubar, I would be very interested in whether/how your HR changes at various paces over the course of the Maffetone training. keep us posted.

Especially when he's doing it three times.

Just entered the Massenutten 100 lottery. 208 slots available, so far 279 in the lottery after two days with five days left to go. The drawing is a complicated process that use the DOW close on Jan 10 to determine where they start the selection on the list and what direction they go. I did get a good spot on the 0 to 999 list that might increase my chance by 0.5%

You going to Hinson Lake this year?

Considering the current temps, the forecasted temps, and my well-documented hatred for treadmills, I may never run again...

Yes, it is ambitious.

Truth is, once I became a total slug, I felt much shame and so kept away. And then I wasn't up to speed on everyone's accomplishments, who the new guys are, etc. So I'm taking advantage of a self-declared New Year's amnesty to get back into it.

P.S. How come all the new guys are so F'ing fast?

Doubtful. It's not a WS100 qualifier. I may be Pinhoti training at that time if I can't get in anything before that.

I can't imagine that many people on a 1.5 mi course. If all were spread out that's about one person every 40 yards.

You should take a hard look at the Table Rock Ultras. You're ready to make this jump and will scenery will give you the bug to expand from there.

Today might be a bad example as I'm fighting a head cold but still ran. The pace was 8:40s for the most part, gradually getting slower which they should, until mile 7 which is more uphill than the rest (nowhere near what some of you do, but enough to make a difference) that was 9:17. Better than when I started, by 30 seconds but it's hard to tell with being sick, winds of 20+ mph, and it was 28°
