Ran a 10k in June (5 Viewers)

I came across one rattle snake. I had a tarantula wasp fly next to me for a while. It was cool but then kinda weird. It was with me long enough that I thought it may have something to tell me and if that happened I just may have crapped myself.
:lmao: No thanks. The next time I start whining about cold-weather running here in Wisconsin, somebody remind me to go back and re-read this post.

..... WAY too much to drink. Finally dragged my butt off the couch at 5:00 last night to run an easy 4, and I think I sweated out what was left of the alcohol, because I felt quite a bit better afterwards.
Just back from a similar 4 mile detox. I haven't drank a whole lotta beer in a while like I did last night. :lmao: = :XRode 11 miles yesterday morning and swam 2,000 yards in the afternoon. Tomorrow, I get to play water boy on the bike for my wife who is doing a 9 to 10 mile run at a county park. She hates the fuel belt, so I'll circle the same path 2 or 3 times so she can take in some H2O. Both kids did bricks yesterday too. My daughter continues to amaze me with her resolve to do well in her upcomming kids tri. She did the entire tri distances in sucession yesterday (200M swim, 10K ride & 1 Mile run). My son did the full swim, a 4 mile ride and a 1/2 mile run.

I would've been fine if I would've stuck with beer. Unfortunately, I made the not-so-wise decision to go with the hard stuff, Sapphire & Tonic. Add a bunch of Cherry Bombs and my ultimate undoing, a shot of Goldschlager, and let's just say that I really don't remember much of what happened after that. :bag:

Success! I received a reply email from a high school principal....simple and straightforward. "The track is usually unlocked during the day. Check the south end gates. If it is open use it. Good luck with your training." The school is about 5 miles from where I live!
:bag: I couldn't figure out why they would lock up a perfectly good track during the summer. My wife and I have been running on our local high school track a few times because our college track looks like it's been through WWII and is downright dangerous to run fast on.

As you all know the TdF started today. Versus.com has some good sweepstakes to go along with it. Cadillac, MapMyride, and Versus itself.

The Cadillac one needs code words. Evidently the code words are similar or the same as last year:

chasers

ignition

cervelo

cadillac

yellow jersey

versus

peloton

bicycling

champagne

breakaway

paris

saddle

aerodynamic

attack

shift

bonk

Can only use one word once. 'Chasers' seemed to work today. Back to your normally scheduled programming.

If my state had wasps that could successfully attack and kill tarantulas, I would move. Hell, I'm thinking about moving a few hundred miles further north right now to just be on the safe side.

Last day of vacation here. Good training day. Swam 1250 yards in 1:40/100 pace. Pretty happy with that considering the waves were bad enough to launch me a few times - tough going. Going airborne was pretty darn fun, though. Sadly it is back to the pool from now on.

Got in my last ride, as well. Wind was still kicking up at 15mph (better than the last ride, though). I really wanted to clock in a 20mph average ride. Managed 18.8 two days ago in really brutal 25mph sustained winds. This one turned out better. Nothing like an out and back where the wind knocks you down 6mph - averaged 17.5mph one way and 23.5 the other. Total ride 15.1 miles ridden in 44:40 - clocked in at 20.25mph (woohoo!). No doubt I have a long way to go, but considering I started biking six months ago I don't think that is too shabby. (Yes, BnB, you can snicker - you're allowed  )

Furley - great news on the progress. Not unexpected that the change in running style will take some time to adjust to.

Meeka - feel better!

Prosopis - nice run! Spooky details, but nice.

----

Great two training days for me up in Michigan.

Friday: 45 minute lake swim; leisurely 10 minute transition; then, 3 1/2 hours on the bike. Didn't push hard on the bike at all, as I'm still cautious about my knee.

Saturday: A full training triathlon (with lazy 5 minute transitions)! Total time of 3 hours, 16 minutes. 35 minute lake swim; 27 mile bike; 8 mile run. I again tried to take it a bit easy on the bike, keeping a gear lower than I otherwise might, and averaged 18 mph. The run was on a paved trail that weaves through the fields and forest - a new favorite of mine. Even with a few hills, and all the effort over two days, I somehow managed a 7:30/mile pace! As I was finishing the bike leg, I passed a nearby lake that was just wrapping up a sprint tri race. Kind of weird biking by a race and not participating ...maybe next summer. If nothing else, this exorcised (exercised?) the 'demons' of my recent DNF.

2Young, I'm interested in that September event, but I'll see how the summer unfolds. I lean toward a switch to a running focus, now, for upcoming races.

Reading this thread is both inspiring and killing me. Wish the baby would get past this acid reflux so that I had some time to get out and train. One good thing is that I've been doing some reading and exploring online and found a lake that's six miles away that has both a 5K jogging trail around it and markers for open water swimming. It's like the tri training jackpot. Hoping to make it out there some time next week.

As always, keep up the great work in here, fellas.

Its tough being your wife's water ##### when you got to bed at 1:30am-ish after fireworks and another day of :lmao: & still get up at 6:30am. Rode 20 miles on a very hilly course averaging 18.5 MPH and really wasn't pusing it. Cool little park with an 8 mile loop and a couple of offshoots to get in the 20 miles. Lots and of of bikers, runners & rollerbladers out there ad the weather today is perfect. Was able to find my wife 3 times so she could take water on her run. Stopped at Kroger on the way home to get BLT fixings (no reason to stop my weekend of pork products now). We were a bit of a freakshow in the store with me in tri shorts and my wife in a running skirt. The gaggle of 300+ pound shoppers didn't know what to make of us. It was kinda sad to go from seing a whole bunch of fit people to seeing a whole bunch of overweight people getting winded walking to and from their cars.

Kind of a last minute decision has me headed up to Devil's Lake for the 50k this coming weekend...

Pretty excited!

:)

One or two of yuz is from up Wisconsin way - no?
Yup. That's about two hours away from me. Supposed to be a badass race. If I wasn't going to be in St. Louis this weekend, I'd totally offer to come and watch. Hope you do great, Poppa.

I'll be in Madison that weekend (soccer tournament)...about 40 miles away. Our games are at various times throughout the day so I won't be able to make the trip. Good luck!

Where did you run today?

Epic 22 mile run today, with 8 on paved bike paths and 14 on singletrack like you see in the pictures. 4200' in elevation didn't really bother me, I think being here 5 days has me acclimated. 10:33 pace overall, so just under 4:00 total, pretty solid pace for me on a relatively flat trail course for that long. From mile 18 on was pretty tough, but not too bad. Headed to an ice bath shortly, though. I guess now begins the taper for the SF Marathon in a couple weeks.

Did the 5 mile fun run here on Saturday as well, and it was, well, fun! Finished it in 40:14, and as it was actually just under 5 miles put me at 8:33 pace, was really happy with that. Even had a little fun with some strategy, as I tucked in behind 3 guys that appeared to be in my age group for about 1/2 mile, drafting off them a bit going into a slight headwind, and then put the pedal down with 1/2 mile to go to blow by them. Was also good for me to watch everyone fly past me at the start, while I just kept chugging along at 8:35 pace, knowing I'd catch most of them. And by the 1.5 mile mark, I was indeed chugging on by people as they were slowing down. Every race, even "fun runs", you learn something.

Milestone today as well, as I hit 635 miles for the year, which is what I did all of last year.

Awesome, good luck! I just registered for my first ultra, a 36 miler in Lake Tahoe in September, I'm sure I'll be picking your brain a bit prior to that!

Super deal on the Ultra - gotta be Trail, right?

(I won't be talkin' about 8-something per mile, ya understand...or even 10!)

Out for 9 miles with 4 at HM pace (6:50 or so). Not looking forward to the fast part at all. Come looking for me if I don't report back within a couple of hours. ;)

:finger:! You're getting me thinking ...I've got to start driving away from my city environment so I can run some sort of trails, though nothing as spectacular as this.
There's nothing like running on trails. And while I've got some spectacular ones at home in Marin, there's just something about running up here around Bend, OR, that is special. Part of it, for me anyway, is that I grew up spending some time ON that river, drifting it for 3 days every summer with my dad, on more remote portions of it further north. It's kinda cool running alongside it, now, and seeing it differently. So yes, get out of Chi-town and find some trails!

Made it, but it sucked. Due to poor route planning, I had the wind at my back for the first four easy miles and therefore ran them too fast at 7:53, 7:40, 7:46, and 7:42. Next four miles were the tempo miles (goal = low 6:50's), and all but the first 1/2 mile were into the 23MPH wind gusts. Ran 6:49, 6:49, 7:01, 6:59. Finished with a cool-down mile at 8:04.Kinda disappointed that I fell off the pace for the last couple of tempo miles, but not too bad, I guess, considering the 80-degree heat and the headwinds. Also proud of the fact that I felt like bailing on the last couple of tempo miles, but I toughed it out. Easy 5-mile recovery runs on tap for the next couple of days, and then 10 on Thursday.

Course Map Released for RNR Chicago 1/2 Marathon. I'm sort of disappointed. I got the feeling from the hype that there would be a lot more running along the Lakeshore to the North. I wonder what the wave starts will be like. I don't recall being asked to submit a seeding time, but did put a projected finishing time. Guess you guys will just have to wait a little longer for me at the end. We'll have to get one of those finish line photos (I'll have to find something to stand on so I can get in the shot).

Survive the Blue Ridge Parkway, saddle sores, pinched nerve, bears, and all. Will set-up an account to post pics and give trip details.

Oh yeah, it's on trail alright, looks like this and this and this (ran 13 miles of it last week). And I have no illusions of sniffing anything in the 10:00 range! I'm thinking right now that finishing that distance, at 6400'-7800' of altitude, with a ton of elevation gain, in anything close to 13:00 miles would be a hell of an accomplishment.

August 2nd. Unfortunately, registration closed a while back already. If you go to the event website, it looks like there might be some charity entries available, but you'd have to be willing to do some fundraising.

I am having a hard time finding races. Active does not seem to be that helpful. I am also a little disappointed in the running club I joined. I just want to get in some kind of race. I may swing by the running store in Tucson and see what they have to say. I hate going into those stores when I cant buy anything. :kicksrock:

I just looked at your 10/11 marathon in Chicago that is in your sig. Already closed? :hot: That is annoying. I wanted to do the Pheonix R&R marathon. I guess I should look into it now. $125 for that Chicago marathon is pretty steep. Are they all that expensive?

tri-man and 2Young - You realize it's only 31 days 'til our half, right?
Wraith and/or Harris, too, right? Have a great weekend of training, guys!
Yeah, I forgot about Wraith. Sorry GB, but you haven't been around here much lately!Harris is in Europe someplace, IIRC.
:lmao: I'd be more offended if I hadn't been away from the thread for well over a week - no worries. I'll definitely be at the RnR 1/2 and I'm really looking forward to meeting folks (and seeing Tri-Man again - is your knee good for the 10k on Saturday?)

Spent last week with family up in New Hope, PA - right next to the NJ border. I'd never been to NJ before, now I've run more there than any other state besides IL and WI! My BiL is a former Navy SEAL (SEAL team SIX - essentially the Navy counterpart to the Army's Delta Force) and we went running together 3 times on a beautiful trail along the Delaware river. Did 6.5, 5, and 13 mile runs together, plus I got in a 10x 400/400 (sub-7 pace, recovery jog) one afternoon. It was nice running with someone else for a change (I almost always train solo) and running with someone with that kind of background was very motivating. I wasn't about to drag ###!!!

On Sunday I went out and did 1/2/1/2/1 with the 2's at sub 8s and the 1's in the 9 range.

Tomorrow I'll do 3x 1600 repeats similar to what Ivan was talking about.

Going to hop around here as bits and pieces of pictures come in. On to day 3.

Day 3 Profile This was after a 103 mile day and an 83 mile day both with net climbing in excess of 10,000 feet.

Black Mountains looming Taken on the climb to craggy dome, the Black Mountains loom in the distance. Mt. Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi, is a peak behind these mountains.

One of the 17 tunnels on the parkway. No lights, enter at your own risk. Had one moment where everything was dark and I had to get off the bike as I lost all sense of direction.

Pinnacle Lake. Looks inviting, but it would have been a 1000 ft hike down to take a swim.

Kicked Mt. Mitchell's butt. Nothing like standing on the top of the world or at least the top of the eastern USA. My buddy scott and I hoist our bikes in celebration.

I have some even better film prints from day 3 with two of our group going thru a tunnel, wild turkeys that I got within a few yards of, and Craggy Dome. Will post after I scan them.

Cool pics - you the Cervelo dude? While I'm thinking about it I needed to ask a bike tire question. Sometime last week I managed to cut my tire. The cut is on the cornering edge and is a tad over 1/4" long. I can see the casing at the bottom of the cut. It is fully inflated right now and appears ok otherwise. What is the consensus on when a cut is big enough to necessitate a new tire?

Oh you are both absolutely right, my only real goal is to finish, before the 10 hour cutoff. So that's about 16:40 pace. But to keep myself running when I should be (as opposed to walking, which I will be doing plenty of!), I'm going to set a time goal of some sort. Right now I'm thinking around 8 hours will be my goal, but we'll see how I'm feeling at the beginning of September.Of course I still have to get through 26.2 in a couple weeks!

Yeah, it's kinda starting to get that way, at least for the big ones (Boston, Chicago, NYC, MCM) and the Rock 'n Roll races. The one that you mentioned, Rock 'n Roll Arizona, costs $100. Some of the smaller local races are a little less expensive, especially if you register far enough in advance. Registration fee for the Fox Cities Marathon here in Appleton in September is "only" $70 through the end of July. Just go to MarathonGuide.com and check out their race calendar for ideas.Duck and BNB - Great pics!

wraith - Sorry again for the unintentional slight. Sounds like some good workouts last week. First time I ever saw the words "beautiful" and "NJ" used in the same paragraph. :P

PERFECT weather here this morning for my 5-mile recovery run -- sunny and cool, with temps in the 50s. Kept it nice and easy after last night's hard running workout and swim lesson.

I'm ready ...the knee is OK. 6 miles this morning, with 4 x 1,200 on the track (7:00/mile pace). I'll see you out there 30 minutes before the race, as before! I'm hoping to remember/find that guy that beat me last race, and then shadow him throughout and outkick him at the end.

Just had to brag that (thanks to a tip from one of my friends on the RWOL message boards) I just got a room for Boston next year for $393 total for three nights! :excited:

Don't even have my BQ yet, but the hotel is rated #2 of 74 hotels in Boston in TripAdvisor, and the location is perfect. And it's not one of those pay-in-advance deals, either. You simply don't get deals like this in Boston, especially on marathon weekend.

That is annoying. I wanted to do the Pheonix R&R marathon. I guess I should look into it now. $125 for that Chicago marathon is pretty steep. Are they all that expensive?
PF Chang's (what you lovingly call the "Pheonix R&R" lol) can be found at http://www.rnraz.com, and has both a half and a full marathon. The courses are separate routes (starting at the state capital in Phoenix and ending at ASU), with separate starting times, so the full runners don't have to trip over the half runners, and vice-versa (which I think is cool). gruecd ran the full this past January and had some warm weather, but I ran it the two previous years and it was near freezing at the start, so it's hit or miss on the weather. And yes, these races are expensive.
