This time it was my son taking first in his AG, with my daughter taking 4th in hers. My son did it in much more epaic fashion winning by less than a second in an all out sprint the last 75 yards or so. They had to consult the race management company to see who crossed first as the initial results showed both kids at 32:18. To top it off, my son was 4th overall (boy & girls) as an 11-year old, with kids competing up to age 14! My daughter had a rough day. She did OK on the swim and the bike, but had to fight nasty cramps on the run. It was harder for Mom to watch, then it was for me, but I still felt really bad for her. She was passed in the 2nd 1/2 mile loop on the run to miss medaling, but took it really well. Mentally, feeling great, physically, pretty beat up.Day started off alright - woke up at 2:30 AM and couldn't go back to sleep, so got out of bed and watched some tube, ate, drank coffee, and was out the door 10 minutes earlier than planned Parked, walked to the start with the idea of hitting the restroom, getting back in line, and hitting again, only to stand in line for 45 freackin minutes! By that time, had 5 minutes until wave start time, so quickly warmed up and stretched, had to walk 3-4 blocks to enter the chute, and by the time I reached the start line I was the only one there in that wave (I think they took a picture). Oh, and my Garmin wouldn't turn on - charged it again yesterday, it indicated it was charged, but something screwed up (lesson learned - should've checked it this AM, had time to recharge it). So I used my ipod stopwatch, but had to rely on the mile markers to know my pace.Took that as a positive, as I figured I'd just focus on how I felt without checking pace and HR all the time, but it was a tough adjustment considering I always wear that thing. First 1/2, as gru noted, went pretty well. Felt great, was running 9:30s, and I could tell the HR was staying down. But about mile 15 in Golden Gate Park, my legs started to go, first my hammies then my calves. I wasn't even sure what it was, but realized later I was cramping - I've never had that happen before. I think I lacked some "specificity of training" which hurt me, in that I only had one long run on all pavement (a 20 miler about 5 weeks ago), everything else including my 22 miler was more trail than roads - and it's just a slower, different kind of running. That'll serve me well for my upcoming trail ultra, but my next marathon (and there will be a next, I know I have a sub-4:00 in me at some point) I'll do my long runs on road I think. When I do legs at the gym (at least once, sometimes twice/week), some combo ofCalf raisesSquatsAdductorsAbductorsLeg curlsLeg extensionsLungesWhen I do arms, back, chest, etc. I'll do non-weighted exercises in between sets. Sounds like a solid plan. I always like getting a massage a couple of days post-race, too.Woke up sore, as expected, but haven't detected anything acute that could indicate an actual injury, so that's good. Spent much of last night researching marathon recovery to come up with my plan for the week. So I'll be going for a couple short walks today, and will try and schedule a massage for tomorrow. I had plans of being right back at it for 13 this weekend, but I'm really going to play that by ear, and am expecting I'll ease into it a little more with hopefully a couple of short runs at the end of the week, and maybe an hour of slow running on Sunday. But I'm going to see what my body is telling me is ok and go with that, at least for the next 7-10 days.

Great job, Duck!! Now you know what to expect next time - that's a huge factor in a first marathon. Nobody can ever fully prepare you for mile 22 unless you've been there - and now you have!! Bummer on the Garmin though. Mine did the same thing for the 10miler I did in May but luckily I brought my watch as well (which I'd never done before!). I like to say I'd lose my mind without my Garmin, but there's something to be said for running by feel instead of by the numbers. Regardless well done!! Been forever since I've really timed myself, and I simply can't let go of my sprinter's habits. I laid the rubber down for 50 yards - 28.00 seconds. Booyaaahh. Did a second in 28.80 (boo hiss). And there was lots of room for improvement - I haven't exactly been working on block starts, flip turns, and sprint strokes.
Next time I have my kid there I'll be aiming for 26.xx - wearing something besides parachute shorts, with a good start, snappy turn, etc. Game on.

It is. Quick perspective, I have been right on 2-minutes/per 100 meters for the last couple tri swims I've done (which is slightly above mid pack for my AG). Going sub 30 second 50s is 1/2 this. It is flying. Hey Sand, is the whole running thing and getting used to the new bike holding you back from doing a sprint tri? Triathlete Mag had an article on "Race Your Way In To Race Shape". If you could get a couple in this year, with a solid winter, you'll be destroying these next year.Show off. I'm 4461. I'd love to pull out a PR, which would be going sub 1:49, but I've done zero distance running since April due to an untreatable sprint tri addiction. My run is fine, just not as fast as I think I should be. I had a great run yesterday where I finally wasn't exhausted by the effort and in a reasonable time (8:30/mile). Biking is good - on my beach trip I had the chance to do one TT like effort and averaged a bit over 21mph for ~16 miles. That is pretty slow, but it will get me around a course. Giddy'up! My ex (girl I was dating when I met my wife = almost 20 years ago), just Facebooked me, and I found out she's a pretty good tri-athlete now! She just raced/finished the Sprint National Championship in Newport Beach this past weekend (flew in from Greece to compete!).The last sprint around here is August 8th - I am signed up and paid.

#5116 here. I am targeting 1:52 (my course best is 1:47:52 from three years ago, and I'm just not there right now). Depending on humidity, that could fall back. I've recently remembered why I vowed never to do a fall marathon again.Race number is 2695.I actually haven't raced 1/2-marathons. Awesome, share a link if you'd like. I'd like to see the course set up, etc. This just might be the coolest thing about these events (aside from the actual racing), seeing the different course layouts and planning your attack. #5116 here. I am targeting 1:52 (my course best is 1:47:52 from three years ago, and I'm just not there right now). Depending on humidity, that could fall back. I've recently remembered why I vowed never to do a fall marathon again.
Anyway, did 6x 400s today. 6:48, 6:53, 7:01, 6:45, 6:53, 7:04. Pretty inconsistent but in the right range. The better news is that I didn't walk during most of the 400yd rest intervals.
Race number is 2695.I actually haven't raced 1/2-marathons. I ran one with gruecd early this season in 1:45, which was an effort, but it wasn't intended to be a true race. My goal is sub 1:43 (around 7:50/mile).Do you guys have numbers that we can track you on Sunday?
And yeah, that's fast swimming for Sand! I'd be happy to do 50 yards (two lengths) in, maybe, 50 seconds at absolute best.

Well, this has gotten worse hasn't it? Looks as though rain in the least & thunderstorms possible (80% humidity & 30% chance of storms). I can't wait to throw on a trash bag on Sunday morning.Early forecast for next Sunday in Chicago = high of 79°, low of 63°. Sounds like we'll be running in the 60's. Just got back a little while ago from an easy 5-miler with a buddy of mine. Altitude didn't bother me too much at all, I was pleasantly surprised. I was unpleasantly surprised when I had a big fat-### sit next to me on the 2-1/2 hour plane ride here, but that's another story....

Why don't you do 1.5 (or so) mile run repeats from your house. Sure its boring doing the same route 3 or 4 times, but it'll get you off the dreadmill. My wife does her long runs passing the house 3 times for water breaks as she HATES the fuel belt. SO, how much have you lost?I am jealous of you guys !!!!!!I have been hitting the gym hard. Alternating between treadmill and eliptical. I was going to run the streets last night but it was over 110 here. I am still a little gun shy with the dehydration thing. I was at my PCP yesterday and he mentioned how much weight I lost and how good I look.I want to run outside really bad though. I may have to do some night runs.
Frankly if it's going to be that humid, I'd rather have some rain fall. I tend to run pretty well in the rain (glad I went out all those days instead of staying in on the treadmill!) and hate the humidity. As long as it stops for the beer drinking, that is! 10 lbs in the last 2 mos.The doctor did not have my chart but felt I had lost about 25lbs over the last year. I was at the cardiologist because of the red cross incident and he was amazed to. I have an appt for a stress test and echo cardiogram in the next 2 weeks. I will get the exact weights at that appt. Big fan of this attitude, although to be fair I'm a lot more casual about races than some of you guys. If the weather cooperates, you get in a good solid race and maybe PR. If the weather sucks, well, you get a good running story and get to feel like a badass for running in the rain/heat/whatever. If you do any siginificant number of races, you're going to get stuck in bad conditions on a regular basis, so you might as well try to enjoy it and make the best of it.
