Ran a 10k in June (10 Viewers)

GOOD LUCK RACERS!!!!!

Tri-Man what's your magic word for your race? (BQ?)

Bailed on running today - my 3 yd old has been sick and it's been a tough week. Plus I have to do my long run (18) tomorrow because we're driving down to KY on Sunday so I didn't feel like stacking my runs. And it was raining. AND... I'm a wimp. HTFU!!

Anyway even though I'll be on the road by 9am on Sunday I will be thinking about the racers and checking in here when I can.

GOOD LUCK RACERS!!!!! Tri-Man what's your magic word for your race? (BQ?)
The word I'll write on my arm by my watch is "Coach." I need to remember my training, remember my focus ...I need to remind myself "what would your coach be telling you to do right now?" That keeps me analytical and sharp and into the moment. I'll try to do some shadow running while plugging along a flat road by the river from miles 14-21. My BIL will catch me at 23 1/2 and 24 1/2, and he'll be pounding "Boston" into me hard.My mantra will be remembering Duck (50K), Chad (BQ last week), and Don (BIL's gutty half-marathon), so:Duck (or Chad or Don) .. did it ..So can I ..Stride ......Breathe .....(repeat)Or heck, I'll just find some hot babe running 8:10-8:15/mile and follow behind her (her behind?).

Positive reinforcement - the carrot is better than the stick. Good luck to the two of you this weekend!Just remember when you get to those dog miles where things get tough that This is NOT a Parade so HTFU and keep putting one foot in front of the other. My pep talk of the day.

I'm off to do a slow 10k this afternoon. I've taken the last couple of days off due to illness. I have energy to burn today, so I'm back on the horse. My next race is coming up all too soon.

UPDATE: Went out for a leisurely run and ended up doing 8.75 miles instead of my planned six. :flex:

Stats:

Time: 1:15:23 - 8:40 pace

Climbing: 700' (average 3% grade up and down)

Importance: 40% longer than any run I have ever completed

Actually felt pretty good until the last mile. I have no doubt I could go out and complete a half marathon next week if I really had to. Feet and nipples are a bit sore (time to break out some band-aids for the next long run), but other than that all systems are go.

Just as a note. I have run across one of the best videos on swim technique that I have seen. Very well done. Definitely need more Katie, less Michael, though.
This is REAL good, thanks. I need the reminders on the shoulder turn (being a sailboat not a barge). My technique faded a ton while racing over the summer and I have been back working on it in the pool. There is way too much kicking going on in the video for a tri swim technique, in my opinion, but it give everything else anyone would need to improve as a swimmer. I am signed up for an indoor tri on 12/6 and will be referring to this video as I prepare. After a recovery swim Monday of next week, post 1/2 tomorrow, I am going to get after some additional speed.Congrats on your long run. About the band-aids, I tried those nip guards once and hated them. Caking with Body Glide works much better for me as the guards tear at chest hairs while running (TMI, I know) and annoyed me a ton. You can Glide up before a tri swim and it'll last through the run.

Heading for the race expo in a few. With the race having new course this year, I plan on taking a walk out to the S/F line to check it out (including hidden potty locales).

8.16 miles this morning in 1:34. Not fast, but I did run the whole thing and almost had negative splits. I honestly think I could have done 10 miles today if I had needed to.

8 miler

It was 63 degrees when I started and not much warmer at the end. I love the cool weather.

SteveUK ran a 10k this morning and he did pretty good, but I will let him post the particulars.

Good luck to everyone this weekend. Triman, good luck with the BQ tomorrow, I know you can do it.

I woke up to do a morning run and I can hardly walk. My muscles are screaming at me. Work was real slow at he office which means I would have only got about 2 hrs. I called my landscaping buddy and worked with him. 11 hrs in the high 90s busting my ###. I am not as young as I once was and I am feeling it this morning. Hopefully I will loosen up and be able to get out there tonight.

Good luck to all the racers out there.

* I think Prosopis will be back today after time served.

Hey, everybody. Got out this morning for an easy 10-miler with a couple of guys from my running club. Averaged 8:24 pace, so nothing too taxing. I'm only 6 days removed from Chicago, and my body is feeling pretty good already. Trying to decide if I should have any kind of time goal for NYC in two weeks.

Gonna hit the gym this afternoon. I haven't touched a basketball in months, so I'm hoping to shoot around for an hour or so and then do some lifting/core work. I've got nothing going on today, so I'll probably be there for a couple of hours.

Good luck tomorrow, racers!!

Two words for NYC: Elvis Costume. C'mon, you've take running very seriously, with kick ### results, celebrate it by running costume. When we ran Vegas, the Elvi we ran with when we were remarried said you can get a race specfic costumes online.Back from the expo & :blackdot: I even got pulled in by the lovely spokes-model at the laser hair removal booth. She promised that if I win the $1,500 free treatment I can put it towards lasering my noggin so I'll never have to shave it again. Much like a stirpper, I think she may have been telling me what I wanted to hear. A 1:50 time from Chicago got me way up front in corral C (A&B go at the gun @ 7:15, C is next 2-minutes later :sadbanana: ). My wife is in H so I have a bit of a wait for her. IF I can park close, I'll be able to go get some warm gear for the both of us. I am breaking the rule of "don't try anything new on race day", but just a bit. Brooks has just come out with a tech top with rear (back) pockets like my tri top, so I snagged one. I prefer to fish my beans out of the back pockets versus getting them out of my race belt and have spilled more than a 1/2 a bag of beans getting them out of the belt. I'll have a race tested shirt underneath, so I not go all that crazy.

Got my Race in early to beat the Marathoners :excited:

My goal was to beat 55:00 since I knew I had made significant progress since my last 5K race 3 weeks ago (27:59). This time out I had the great advantage of not going out the night before to a Mexican restaurant! Another advantage was the drop in temperature. At start time (8am) it was around 62 degrees - a far cry from the mid to high 80's I have been training in for the last few weeks.

I have my Garmin set up to take Kilometer splits and I was especially glad of that today as the Mile markers were definitely dubious. After hitting 4:55 for the first K, I allegedly hit 1 mile in 6:44!

I went through 5K in 26:11 (8:27 pace). I wasn't quite able to maintain that pace for the 2nd half and finished in 53:11. This placed me 38th out of 81 finishers (there was a 5K as well which had 156 finishers). In my age group I came in 5th (out of 5!) - just 39 seconds behind 3rd

So I set a PR on American soil (some way behind my all time record of 43:28 set 15 years ago in England) eclipsing my awful 62:23 on the Beach in 2007! We don't have many 10K's in these parts.

So now it is 2 weeks to the Daytona Beach Half and I'll be hoping to beat last year's performance of 2:00:38 (but I was 20 pounds lighter last year).

Good luck to everyone with their races this weekend.

Awesome job, man. Figures all the fast guys were in your AG. Let me guess - 35-39 AG?On my end - did my weekly tempo run today. Finished the first three miles in 7:55 pace and then a slower warmdown. Legs are toast, particularly considering I did a hard 2400yd swim this morning. Took a cold batch (not enough ice around for an ice bath) and can definitely feel some calf muscles that aren't used to the effort I am asking of them. I am now sitting on my fat ### in front of the TV watching some  . I ain't moving for a while.

Ran a 6 miler this afternoon @ 10 minute miles. Felt really good and probably could have pushed another 1.5 miles.

The Iceman cometh is coming up in 3 weeks so I need to get on the bike tomorrow and put in at least 20 miles of trails.

Keep on keeping on!!!

Nice work Steve!!!! Does the Daytona Beach 1/2 Finish on the Speedway's finsish line? Having run on Indy (and kised the bricks), I think running on the Speedway down there would be VERY cool.

Thanks Sand. No, unfortunately the 35-39 age group passed me by a while back  I am now in the 45-49 age. Oddly enough, I would also have come 5th in the 35-39 group (and also the 55-59 group!).

This is where multi-sport athletes have my admiration. It's all I can do to fit my runs in with a little bit of cross training. I have no idea how I could adequately train in 3 disciplines - even assuming I could swim properly...lol

Yes, it does - and it starts on Pit Road. It is pretty cool. There is also a Daytona 5K which is held on the morning of the Rolex 24 hour race which is also cool but mostly it is cold as it starts at 7am on the last weekend in January. I think this will be the 4th time I have run around the track.

My wife and kids are gone for the weekend. That helps. Most of my bike work is at night on the trainer after everyone goes to sleep. I've been looking at getting a flashlight so I can run at night, too. My neighborhood has lots of streets and low traffic. Strength training is squeezed in at lunch at work (lucky there too - my office has a weight room). In fact, I'm gonna do a bike interval session tonight. :coffee: And I am concentrating on running through the winter - so most of my action is there. As can be seen from my results my runs have been the weak point by a pretty good margin. I am getting better, though, and hope to improve substantially next year. I am maintaining on the swim and bike for the most part.Learning proper swimming is tough - much more technical than the other two. It can be done, though.

Question for the Michigan peeps. Have any of you ever done a mountain biking / camping trip? Ideally I'd like to find a spot that has a lake that is only excessible by bike and maybe a little hiking. It doesn't need to to take days to get there, but an afternoon of riding would be perfect. Then a day or two Chilling at the lake and exploring the area a little more.

Tri-man is supposed to text me after his run tomorrow (gruecd he couldnt find your number but had mine) - I'll be on the road to KY but I'll post from my iPhone as soon as I can once I hear from him.

Scheduled 18 miler today that I pushed to 19 (18 is the wall - F*** 18!). I'm not entirely sure, but I think it may be one of my best runs ever. Target pace was 9:23.

I noted the change from my 18 miler 3 weeks ago following each leg for comparison:

5 miles, 9:28 pace, 153 bpm - (0:10/mile faster, 5 bpm increase)

5 miles, 9:16 pace, 161 bpm - (0:18/mile faster, 5 bpm increase)

5 miles, 9:11 pace, 167 bpm - (0:13/mile faster, 5 bpm increase)

3 miles, 9:05 pace, 177 bpm - (0:09/mile faster, 5 bpm increase) - also 1 mile further

1 mile, 8:53 pace, 184 bpm - (0:02/mile faster, 5 bpm increase)

Overall: 19 miles, 9:15/mile, 166 bpm - (0:13/mile faster, 8 bpm increase)

My legs were really hurting afterwards but the achilles is no worse than it has been. I took an ice bath and that seemed to help some.

Three 20 milers to go before the race.

:lmao: Remind me again why we do this. Air temp, 31; wind chill, 28; hours slept, something between zero & 4 becuase some 11-year old girl thought it was cute to call my son at around 11pm waking me up and making it tough to fall back asleep  Only thing to do now is hook up with 19,000 other people and go for a run.

I just hope he didn't forget his passport :) Detroit Marathon FAQ (Scroll down :) )
I saw that. Do they make you stop at the border and present your papers? Two marathons today and neither one has live updates, how cheap can you get.

I meant to run 5 this morning, but the route I was running wasn't actually 5 miles. It was 5.56 and I did it in 1:02 with negative splits. Every day that I run I am feeling just a bit more comfortable.

Oh, it was 47 degrees this morning so I got to find out if I was small enough to fit into my winter running clothes. They were a bit tight but I was able to wear them on the run. I can imagine, there you are sitting at the table enjoying a nice breakfast the n some fat guy in black tights comes running by...

Pretty sure they just check your passport when you pick up your bib at the expo or whatever.
Yeah, I think so. I read somewhere about the only people allowed over the border are those wearing a race number. I guess they also have to go through some sort of radiation detection device as it says anyone who has had medical radiation treatment recently should make themselves known to race officials

well unless you text him first i guess he found it! Hopefully he'll text you too because i'm driving though Indiana currently. Fun day!
Yeah, I bet. Congrats on a great progression run, by the way. Sounds like you're rounding into shape nicely.

For those without a life that woud like to track me Sunday  you are supposed to be able to click here, click on results and they should have split information. My bib # is 11735.
2Young in at 1:50:41. Congrats, buddy!!!! How'd it go??
Great job 2young. I wonder how triman is doing?
He's trying to go sub-3:36, right? I'm gonna predict 3:33.
According to google Grand Rapids is on the same tim I am. So given an eight am start, he should be done now. Results will be here.

Strange. I never found my legs, if that makes sense. I think I may have swam too much this week as I got a Charlie Horse in the middle of my back that started at about the 5th mile and never went away. I was never even close to breathing heavy, but every time I tried to push, the legs just wern't there. Close to a PR and my fastest Detroit of the 3 I've run by over 2-minutes, so I can't complain. Another weird thing, I was hungry the entire run  I had a bag of beans in the corral, a Hammer Gel at mile 4, bag of beans at mile 6 and another at 10. No so sure what this was all about. Fun race. A freighter went right under the bridge to Canada as I was running over and blew its fog horn. It vibrated the entire bridge. BTW, you guys are right about the BIB being my passort for the day. I had to show it at pick up and you could not enter either country without it showing. Each year, they arrest several "bandits". Just put down a couple of dogs off the grill with a Pacifico. Off to nappy land while watching your pack destroy my Lions. for Tri-Man.

Boston - 2O11! 3:41per text from triman!! Congratulations!!!
:goodposting: want to celebrate, but thought he needed a 3:36. Is that for 2010, but the 3:41 gets him in for 2011? eta, might have found the answer, there is an age up rule. He is 54, 55 gets him to 3:45 for the following year. Sounds like it is time to :stalker: WTG TRI-MAN!!!!!

 That's exactly right. Your qualifying time is based on your age on the day of the Boston Marathon, thus his qualifying time for 2011 is 3:45 – and he can be 53 or 54 when he runs the qualifying race. He actually texted me and said that he had nice pacing for 20 miles before he had to shorten his stride and settle for his secondary goal.In short, WAY TO GO TRI-MAN!!!!! :hifive: :hifive: :hifive: :hifive: :hifive:

Just so you know, tri-man, I was planning on running a good race at Boston in 2010 and then "retiring" from Boston for a few years. You'll have some convincing to do for 2011..... ;)

Recover well, buddy!

Anybody know pmb's real name or bib number???

:football:
Well, I only found one "P. Brown" who finished Columbus. If that's our guy, looks like he might've had a rough day. Ran a strong first half (1:41:01, just off 7:30 goal pace), but looks like he did some serious HTFU'ing in the second half, finishing in 3:41:39.Let us know how you're doing, GB!!

(If this isn't our guy, I just did a whole lot of internet stalking for nothing....)

Way to Go STEVE; @YOUNG and TRI-MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great, weekend of racing. Gruecd; you had better plan on running Boston in 2011!!! I hope to qualify at the 2011 Houston marathon, as I'll be 45 in 2011 (= my time will go down to a currently manageable 3:30). Still waiting on PMB

My update:

I got my second 20+ miler in this morning (barely). The temps here have finally cooled down, as it was only 59 degrees at the start of the run, and 64 when I finished (my coolest run by more than 15 degrees down here since June!). Everything was going great through mile 16, with my HR still below 165, but it elevated quickly through mile 18 where it got up to 180. I slowed it down to maintain 180'ish for the final two, painful miles. I expected the run to go much more smoothly after a fairly ez 21 last weekend in WI. I've never done 20 milers on back to back weekends before, so I'm hoping it was just due to having too tired of legs. I'm now in quazi-taper mode, but don't feel real good about trying to complete 31 hilly miles on rough trails in just three weeks. I've never been this ill-prepared for a running race as my times are hideously slow right now, I haven't been within 10 miles of the distance I need to run, and haven't even run the distance I need to run in a full-week's of running yet  (I will this week, as I plan on doing 6 on Tues. then 8 on Thurs.).

Fine, you and tri-man split my expenses, and I'll be there!! Honestly, I tell myself that I won't run again in 2011 if/when I run well in 2010, but it would hard not to go in 2011 considering that I already have the qualifier.

PHEW!!! A woman I work with needed a 3:45 to qualify. She ran a 3:48 today and this is the 3rd time she has missed by less than 5-minutes. I am not sure I'd be a lot of fun to be around after just missing 3 times, let alone once.

Ditto that. Last weekend I told all my buddies that I was getting in my car and driving straight home after the race if I wouldn't have gotten my BQ. And I meant it.

Well you are partially correct. I did have a great first half, and I was cruizing, but I could not breath at all. I am not sure if I picked up a cold from my kids or what, but I started to feel horrible and could not take any deep breaths. This started at about mile 8. Kind of when downhill from there. Still PR'd, but kind of disappointed in general. I am happy to finish and fight through everything to get the finish. I will write more tomorrow in a full race report, but not much went right for me today. All that said, I had a great time as did my family. Seeing them cheer me on was great and an added boost. More tomorrow. I am beat and nothing seems to be working correctly on my body.
