Ran a 10k in June (6 Viewers)

Today is my day to live vicariously through gru.
I wanted to as well, but couldn't meet the minimum height requirement.........
This was funny as hell, and went unnoticed   Way to go Grue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am used to being overlooked......
Sorry, man - you'd think with my little kids I'd be used to looking down, too...

Great job Chad! B2B BQ!

Meanwhile, somewhere west of Boston, my wife's cousin trudges past 30k at an 11:02 pace, putting her on target for a 4:49:04. We'll see if she can sustain that through the hills.

Just FYI, I'm gonna try to hold back and go through the first half around 1:34-1:35, HTFU through the hills, and then take an inventory and see how I feel when I hit Boston College. If all goes well, I'll hit 3:10.
Remember, he wanted to start slow. If he wants to do the first half in 1:34:30, his pace would need to be 7:12.His pace is 7:12. Dude is a robot.
Final time: 3:09:48Nailed his target pace to within 0.5 seconds per mile. Awesome!

Wow Grue has to be pumped about that performance.

My 61 yo team mate finished with a time of 3:42 which qualifies him by 18 minutes for next year.

Great Race Gru!!! Could not follow yesterday because we were at the doctors all morning, but you are giving me more motivation for the Pig. Thanks for being an excellent model of consistancy and perseverance.

Quick update for me as I have not been on in awhile.

Saturday: 4 miles at marathon Pace 7:09.

Sunday: Easy 12 miles

Yesterday: Easy 4 miles recovery

I am in taper mode and am going to mostly relax the next two weeks. I am excited about it as I already feel like I have a ton of energy from not running really long on Sunday so here we go down the home stretch.

Hey, guys. Quick drive-by post from the hotel's business center, but I wanted to make a point to stop and say THANKS SO MUCH for all the support yesterday. You guys are great. :blackdot:

More details to come when I get back home, but needless to say, I'm super happy with yesterday's performance. Talk to you guys soon!!

Great job, PMB. You are going to have a great race just like Gru. You guys are both inspirational, and helping me set my sights higher about what is possible through consistency and perseverance (not to mention talent, though that might be in a little shorter supply for some of us than you). Are we going to be able to follow the Pig online, or is that only available for big races like Boston?I had another really solid run today. 4.5 easy miles, though I turned it up for the last mile -- did the first 3.5 at a very comfortable 8:10 pace and then came home at exactly my 7:30 target race pace for the last mile.

Glad you accomplished what you set out to do.PMB: Man, you're going to kill it.Meanwhile, back among the human population, I have been trying to get some of my run fitness back after having my bike time take over for a bit. I have run a 10 miler and a 5 miler in the last 2 days. The 10 miler was at 8:20/mile over hilly terrain. Last night I did 5 miles with 2 hard ones in there - ran those in 6:58 and 6:48. Pretty happy with that.I am still preparing for my swim in May. I am going to be very close or just get over the 50k yd mark for April. The first two weeks of May will be pretty brutal with 30k done before I start tapering down a bit.

I am sure if you go out to Flying Pig Marathon that you should be able to track me throughout the day. I will get my bib number and post it later as I am at work and do not have that info here with me today.

Mini-update from me - I've been AWOL around here since my half back in March. I've been in maintenance mode for a few weeks. We did Disney end of March which turned into a week off, and I've been doing P90X again to get back into beach shape for the summer. IRight now, I've cut down to running 4-5 miles, 2-3 times per week but will be picking it up again soon.

I have a 10K a week from Saturday and am running the "run" leg of a sprint triathlon in June. Not sure what to expect on the tri - a guy at church approached me and said he had a swimmer, a biker, and needed a runner. My leg will be 3.5 miles on trails, so it should be easy, but a nice change running on the trails.

Anyway, keep running.

When I saw this (pump and run), I thought it was a speed competition that I'd be really good at. Turns out I wouldn't be :lmao:

A few things to catch up on now that Gruecd Day has passed (successfully!) by:

Well, it turns out not only can I still run 17 miles, but apparently I can do it faster than I ever could before...

17 miles, 2:31:04 (8:53/mile), 159bpm ave

My hamstrings were pretty spent at the end (I'm really tired of saying that...) but my HR and energy level were still good. The last time I ran 17 miles in sub-9s was 2003 (8:56s). :flex:
First off, :goodposting: I have been meaning to post that you have been killing it early this year (glad we aren't going head up in Chicago this year).
Thanx 2Y - tho I wish we were going H2H in Chicago again this year!! (not because of the race itself tho) It's taken a while to sink in, but I have realized that I took a leap in my training at some point over the past couple of months, and I think I've reached the next level (whatever level that is). I think a big part of it is the fact that outside of my race recovery / back injury in Dec, I've been consistently running for over a year now (just about 1100 miles in the past 12 months, which is a huge increase for me). Another part is the cross-training that I've been doing consistently since Jan 8 (96 total workouts in 113 days). And yet another factor, I'm sure, is the cooler weather. I'll be interested to see how my results hold up during the summer. Anyway, I'm feeling really good and I really appreciate all of the encouragement!

With the hammys, what are you taking/eating during your runs (or not taking/eating that you should)? And, once you get some food and drink in you post run, does the pain abate quick? Like it was discussed this week with the recovery run talk, the body is looking for fat to burn (slow burn or otherwise). The thighs have the most stored fat in the legs and it may just be you are emptying the tank. Also, you are probably not carbing up two days out like you would on a race weekend, so there is less in the tank to burn anyway. Now is the time to toy with you pre-race and in race routines. I'd play with this on your next longs runs to see if this changes things before you try and alter your stretching, etc.
My hammys are always tight - and to Ivan's point, I don't do enough stretching. I can't touch my toes without bending my legs :lmao: I've been trying to do more stretches after I run, but there never seems to be enough time (and I've been doing lunges after my weekday runs for about 5 weeks now). I will also pay more attention to my carb intake before my longer runs and see what happens. I'll check out the NeoSports - thanks for the link! I think I'll just need to pull the trigger and roll with something here soon so I can get some practice time in with whatever I get. At $100 it's pretty low risk, and I need to get off the fence about it.

3x 1600s today, 7:02 stretch target pace, w/400 recoveries:

6:53

6:55

6:46

Before today, I've done the 3x 1600 workout six times, and I had ONE sub-7 mile (a 6:58 in August).

I may just be getting ahead of myself (and caught up in gruecd's amazing accomplishment yesterday) but I'm suddenly wishing I'd put a spring marathon on the calendar... there's one in Rockford, IL (70 minutes from my house) on May 16... hmmmmm...

Hey guys,

Got my first ever half marathon coming up on Sunday and have a question.

On a few of my longer runs I've been bothered a bit by dehydration.

What can I do in the next 5 days to minimize this on race day?

Of course I'm continuously hitting the bottle and trying to get alot of water in each day.

Any other tips or tricks?

Should I switch to another drink and at what point?

Any foods to make sure I eat or avoid? (Alcohol, salt, etc?)

Oh, one more thing, any thoughts on taking pain relievers on race day?

My ankle has been bothering me and I've been taking Aleve for it.

Should I take it or not on race day? Is there another OTC pain reliver that would be better?

TIA!

Add some electrolytes to your meals leading up to race day... even just plain salt- along with the hydration.Don't race using something if you haven't tried it out and are comfortable with it in training- Aleve or otherwise.WAY TO GO GRU!!!!!!!!!!

As I said earlier, you are getting FAST. That being said, if I were you, I would probably stick with the program that's helping you make such great improvement and not rethink your calendar to suddenly wedge a marathon in there. Just my two cents.

Wraith: Great Workout! I will hopefully get back to some speed work by the end of the week, as it seems to be the best way for me to get over training plateaus. Regarding the marathon; I'd just go for it, while including the speed workouts you have been doing. Once you skip a potential race, you can NEVER get that experience back. DO IT!!!!

Lehigh: as already stated, don't do anything you haven't done while training. IF you have run with a pain reliever (at least in some semi-long runs) by all means do it on race day. I typically take a Motrin prior to all long runs/rides and it has never seemed to bother me (I have an iron-gut though). As for hydration; it appears you are doing what you should. Just drink more than adequate amounts of whatever electrolytes you typically drink starting 3 days prior to the race and you're body will be well-hydrated. Additionally, on race day, make sure you are taking water and/or gatorade at every rest stop. I usually switch between water and Gator/Power/?? at every rest stop, and on long races, try to get two during the last quarter of the race (one of each at every one).

I've just been drinking water, what would you recommend for electrolytes? Gatorade? Something better?

I posted an article in this thread some billion pages and years back that said that OTC drugs do nothing more than a placebo during an event/training. Only effect is afterwards, and psychological. Need RX strength NSAID to get in the ballpark of having a real effect.

I did see it and it looks interesting...Looks like I would have to do 80% of my body weight (144) for it, but not sure what it really buys me other than the minutes off my time and I am not sure why I would want the minutes off my time unless it qualified me for boston or something like that. I first saw it and said, I could do that then thought that I would try and push it and drop the bar on my chest and be out for the marathon...that would be a great story

I take Motrin so that when my race/ride is completed, I'm in less pain. I've taken NSAID's (Naproxen) on a few occasions to aid pain during runs w/o problems, but have never used them for a long race for fear of stomach issues.

Leading up to the race, water with some sort of sports drink in the mix should be just fine (I target a gallon or so of total consuption each day). Watch/limit your caffeine and alcohol intake the couple of days before the race. The rule of thumb I found before my marathon in Dec. was about 20 oz in the morning leading up to 1 hr before start (giving you time to pee before the gun goes off), 6 oz at the start and 6 oz every 20 minutes or so during the run (depending on conditions). If drink at all of the water stops you should be in good shape. If you haven't had whatever sports drink they are serving, I wouldn't recommend drinking it during the race. If you have, then I'd drink it at every other stop. Good luck!!!

Thanks TM  Regarding the marathon, honestly my biggest concern would be f'ing up my potential PR at the SoldierField10 two weeks later. I've been very focused on improving my mid-distance speed and it would suck to ruin that by "wedging in a marathon" ( :lmao: at that BTW). On the other hand, I'm hitting better times now than I did when I was training for Tucson in the fall. I haven't done anything longer than the 17 I did on Saturday, but I know for a fact I could have kept going at 9's if I hadn't pushed the pace. I'm going to check out the course to see how flat it is, think on it for a few days, then decide what I want to do.

2000 yds in the pool in my new jammers - out of the gate, I felt FAST. I was crossing the pool in 20 strokes. Then the reality of not swimming for 2 weeks set in. Oh, well, it was a nice feeling while it lasted. Did my normal ladder routine with 2x 400s in the middle.

Couldn't time my laps, because when I replaced the battery in my Timex Ironman (which I just bought 6 months ago!), apparently I didn't seal the case properly, and it got water inside it. DIY, indeed.

Lehigh - the drink I like is Accelerade.

Wraith - be patient ...I don't think you should add a marathon. You've got a good calendar of events already.

Looking forward to gruecd's race report!

--

Had a conference this afternoon, so used the morning to take my bike to a forest preserve for a very encouraging, very steady/solid 50 mile bike ride. Good pacing throughout (nice to not fight cold, strong winds like last week). Averaged 19.1 mph. For my 1/2-IM, I'd be quite satisfied with 19 mph for the 56 miles, which gets me through the bike leg and T2 in three hours ...but hoping/expecting I can still improve more before June 20.

The wise Yoda speaketh! I love the different opinions on the subject - I just talked to gruecd who thinks I should come to Green Bay and run the marathon up there on the 16th... which would be the only opportunity I probably will ever have to run WITH him, by the way! (he's pacing the 3:45 group!)

Well Gru is the marathon man. I mean you could have asked the crack dealer on the corner if you should spend your doe on drugs or put it in your retirement account.
