Ran a 10k in June (4 Viewers)

Finished my half yesterday

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/52387978

Ran with a buddy, so didn't push as hard as I could have, but this was a decent pace for me. Perfect day for it, felt great
Nice run. I used to live there. Looking at your map brought back some memories.
After the weekend...can't say I am excited to go back. Picturesque city, but seemed dead
I was not a fan of the city. I lived there in the 80s. To be fair I dont like citys much.

Wow. It was a warm one out there. Saw a sign on a bank around mile 21 that said 78 degrees. Brutal.

Anyway.....felt pretty decent through the half, clocking in at 1:30:37. Got out of the shade shortly thereafter, and the warmth really hit me. I knew by mile 15-16 that a PR wasn't in the cards, so I dialed it back and settled for the "D" goal, getting another BQ. Made it with time to spare, clocking in at 3:09:55. I'm not gonna lie to you, though; those last 10 miles hurt. I think every muscle in my right leg was on the verge of cramping. Hard to be too disappointed with that time considering the weather, but I know I've definitely got sub-3 in me.

Separately, looks like Wraith is having a tough day. According to the website, he went through 40K at 4:35, but it doesn't show a finishing time yet. Hope he made it. Like I told my buddy, I definitely wouldn't have wanted to be a 6-hour marathoner today. Brutal.

Congrats on another BQ!!! Sorry I couldn't get out to watch. Up late last night finishing a research paper, and today is filled with outside chores while the weather's still good.

Nice job, wilked.

gruecd -- Sounds like bad conditions. Pretty sick to nail another BQ on a day like that. Are you still planning to take a shot at a sub-3 in a couple of weeks?

Race: 6 Hours of Addison Oaks MTB relay race.Participants: Dexter & Turkish HaremIt's been a while since I was last on my MTB due to concentrating on running for my half marathon next weekend. Well that first 1.5 miles were brutel up hills. 2.5 miles in a tree jumped out in front of me and I wrecked. Luckly my shoulder took most of hit so it's only bruised a little. I was able to get back up and finish my lap. Lap 1: 36:00Turkish was next up and he did his lap without event.Lap 1: 35:55The team ended up doing 10 laps in 6 hours. With Turkish and I accounting for 6 of those 10 laps. I had a lot of fun and I would be lying if I said I didn't think about the bourbon chase and how much fun that's going to be.
Nice work guys! Can't beat the weather we've had the last 2 days!!!

Quick race update from the Michigan State University Sprint Triathlon. I KILLED it! Just missed taking 1st in my AG by 4 seconds and not sure where I would have found the speed to have gotten there as I pushed every leg to the max. Full report when splits are available.

Great!!!!I gotta chuckle a little at the 78 degrees being brutal. I would be thinking about a jacket at 78. Congrats on another BQ. :goodposting:

MSU Sprint Triathlon - Race Report - 400M Pool Swim, 20K Bike, 5K Run

Had to get up before 5am to make the 1:45 drive to the race site in time. The trip went perfect. This was a cool event, as they had a public & college division, along with a team points event. Several schools were represented.

Got transition set up and headed for the pool, but one last pee helped me avert disaster. I stopped by by transition to drop a sweatshirt in my bag and something looked weird about my aerodrink straw. It turns out a HUGE spider had crawled in there at some point. If I had swigged that thing it would have been certain  on the bike.

Headed over to the pool deck. It was a 50M pool, heated very nicely. The college kids went 1st, so we old folks had about 40 minutes to wait. They seeded us by our projected 400 time. I put myself at the front of the 7:30 to 8:00 minute group and had some worries that I had over estimated my potential. Chatted it up with the people around me and they had all swam sub 7:30s in the last week or so. The swim time included taking the ladder out of the pool and about a 20 yard run.

Swim: 7:43, AG 1st, 22nd out of 166. No over estimating here. They put about 10 to 15 seconds between swimmers. I caught the 2 people in front of me before the 1st 50 meters and passed 6 or seven people over all. I used a tri swim with very little leg and skipped any sort of draft and opted to pass instead to get to the wall first for the turn.

T1: Fastest in my AG here too. I thought I'd be a bit anerobic, but was breathing pretty good. Probably an 75 yard run from the pool. Everything went on very well.

Bike: This was a 3 loop course, with a lot of turns and even a round about. I have been slacking on the bike, due to Dr's orders to stay off it to allow my hand to heal, and it showed. Averaged 19.8 MPH and gave back some time, 4th in my AG.

T2: Fast, 42 seconds, again fastest in my AG.

Run: 1st in my AG, running the 5K in 23:25. I really thought I would have broken 23-minutes as hard as I was running. Since it was a time trial start, I had no idea where I stood in comparison to other men in my AG. And, in fact only passed about 6 or 7 people and was not passed. The run was beautiful, through the heart of campus and down along the river. Color change is in full effect which made it even prettier.

Real nice way to end the year and I wish it didn't have to end. I see the Doc tomorrow and hope things are healing better so I can pull some more time on the bike this winter. I have a Spinnervals ### kicker I'd like to start doing to get quicker/stronger on the bike.

Congrats on the result. I love TT starts...since you don't know where the competition is you tend to leave it all out on the course.

9 runs in 10 days, but the day isn't over. Headed out for my second run of the day to get back on pace. This morning wasn't good. The temps were up and the gut pain and nausiness came back. I visit the GI guy tomorrow. Legs are starting to feel the accumulation.

Nice job, 2Y. That 23:25 is not even 90 seconds off my 5K PR, which was achieved without the whole swimming and biking thing before. That's awesome.

Nicely done all around. Very nice 5k time.BTW, is looks like FUBAR is our 12th Boubon Chase team member? If so, that is awesome to have a full roster. There is a discussion on the facebook group (which I guess FUBAR needs access to?) about picking a team name. There is also a spreadsheet there to fill in required registration information. And Pat's address is there to send money to. :scared: So team members, please pop in fill in your info and such.

I was thinking along similar lines. I regard 78 as 'comfortable' for running - though admittedly I am not running 26 miles :)

GREAT races Grue, 2Young, Dexter/Turkish and Propsis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Awesome achievements!

I missed my first workout of the month on Saturday as life got in the way, and got in a nice 12 mile run this afternoon. It was 85 when I left, but the humidity was lower than normal. I kept it slow and steady, and was shocked how well I managed my HR. It hit 166 in the first mile, yet never got over 176. When I finished my last mile (the quickest), my HR was still only 172. I'm starting to gain a little bit of confidence that I might actually be able to finish my HIM in four weeks!

Warning this may be ;) :

I was taking a shower and I noticed a red bump that really hurts now just in my left armpit. I tried to squeeze it like a zit but nothing so I got a blade and tried to lance it. It is still there and now it really hurts. Anyone ever have anything like this?

Infected sweat gland?

arm pit cancer?

zit?

You're probably going to die.

You read my mind. I am feeling faint.

Ya, it is a plugged sweat gland. I have had it. Hurts like a *******, but goes away
Particularly when you cut it open and sweat into it...--------I didn't see this posted. Wraith did finish the marathon in 4:50:59. Looks like the second half got real tough for him. Hopefully he managed to recover with a beer or 12 after the race.

Thanks, Ivan. I'm already registered to run the half marathon in Memphis on December 4. I'll probably just do Pfitz's 8-weeks-between-marathons training plan and then wait and see what the weather's like in Memphis. If it's nice and cold, I'll maybe take a shot at it, or else I'll just stick with the half. I'm pretty sure I can switch events right up until race weekend.

Is this for sure? I thought he just wanted to be an alternate? Or was that somebody else? :wall: FUBAR, if you're confirmed for #12, send me a friend request (see link below), and I'll add you to the group.

Legs pretty sore this morning, but nothing too major. Massage tomorrow morning is gonna hurt, though.

Hung out yesterday afternoon with my RWOL friends at Fado's, then headed over to Jake Melnick's. One of my friends LOVES hot food, and he wanted to try their "XXX" hot wings, supposedly the hottest wings in Chicago. They make you sign a waiver to eat 'em, and the dude finished 'em like they were nothing. Ridiculous.

Dexter, Turkish, wilked -- Great races!

2Young - Awesome job on the tri. Tough break just missing the AG win!

Wraith - Way to tough it out on a day when it would've been WAY easier to just quit. I don't know if you're aware, the the hazard level went from green to yellow around 9:30, and it went from yellow to red ("potentially dangerous conditions") around 11:00. At least two of my RWOL friends DNFed. Seriously, big balls on your part to finish.

BQs, PRs, podiums....just another weekend for the average FBGs right? Nah, great racing everyone. I know some conditions were hotter than wanted, but you guys pushed through them this weekend. I am hoping for similar luck next weekend. Sounds like it is going to be cooler. Low of 45 and high of 68, but I am sure it will change by then.

Again, good weekend guys. Very motivating for me to read such good efforts out there.

-----------

Did my last 13 miler for the cycle. I did it averaging 8:21 and it was not too bad. I was a little tired, but got over it and ran pretty well. It took me couple of miles to warm/loosen up, but it was good.

Light week this week. 7 tomorrow, 7 Wednesday with 2 @ MP, and then 3 or 4 on Friday before the race. All told, I am feeling strong, but I need to get my rest this week. Only thing that really scares me is not getting enough sleep.

Carry on gents. Have a great day

I second this. We have a few discussions out there that it would be nice to hear from everyone. Also I have only 4 payers so far including myself. If you have not checked out the video that Sand posted out there, it looks like a great time.Come in and enjoy the fun.

2Young - awesome racing! I think I know the pool you would have used (right down by the river?). That run along the river is a great path. Congrats!!!

Wraith - tough day for you, given thet posted time. Sorry to hear. Ideally, I could have spent the day following you and gruecd around the course. But with an insanely busy schedule, I didn't make it down at all (or even get a chance to catch you guys over weekend). Wish I could have offered some support. You had mentioned some struggles at times during your training - in immediate hindsight, I suppose those were indications that you're a bit worn down ...not to mention that you don't like the humidity. Good for you to stick with it, though!

...not to mention that you don't like the humidity.
Actually, while it was super warm, it really struck me how dry it was. A couple of times, I was actually a little worried about how little I was sweating. During the summer (when it was super humid), I'd finish a 10-mile run, and my shoes would be soaked. Yesterday they weren't even wet. I actually think the lower dew point was my saving grace yesterday.

?He was put into the spreadsheet we have in the 12th slot. Maybe I jumped the gun...

Put my 9 month old son in one of those running strollers. Did a quick 1.5 and it was harder to push than I thought it would be.

Congrats to Gru for another BQ, Wraith for gutting it out, and everyone else who's been racing!

Just chugging along out here. Effectively took August off after hurting my IT band during that trail 30K in July. Started up again slowly again in September, 3-4 runs per week, no trails at all, just flat stuff. Amazing how quickly I lost fitness, struggled through those first few 3 milers, but it came back fairly quickly. Still just 3-4 runs per week now, but doing 4-5 miles each one, getting back onto trails a bit, and up to 7 miles yesterday for my "long run". IT band has been fine, but my plantar fascitiis just won't get better. Mostly pain management though with that, so just trying to take care of it (stretch, ice, etc) and really making a concerted effort to ramp up slowly this time around.

Will pick out a race sometime in November or December, probably a half or 20K trail run. Goal right now is a spring marathon (possibly Big Sur or Avenue of the Giants on May 1), a summer 50K, and, if all goes well, a Fall 50M. But for now, just focusing on trying to be smart and build.

So many racers this weekend - too little space in a post. :lmao: to everyone. From gutting it out, to huge AG placings, to a BQ qualifier - I'd say it was a huge weekend for the FBG runners.

______________

My update isn't anywhere near as exciting, but it's encouraging anyways. I took 3 days off and rested/iced my bum knee. Since it was a lighter week on the Higdon schedule, I only missed a 3mi run in those 4 days. Sunday was supposed to be a 10K race, but obviously that wasn't the smart thing to do. However, my knee felt pretty good so I decided to do an easy 3 and see how it went. Any shred of pain and I was shutting it down right way.

I got a knee strap this week and threw that puppy on and headed out last night. Long story short - zero pain! So I decided to do an extra 1.5 and had a really good 4.5mi run. After taking off the strap, it still felt a tad tender, so I'm going to keep icing'er up for a while until I feel no ill effects post-run. It's really odd that I felt fantastic throughout the entire run, but I felt a bit of tenderness afterwards. ;)

Today's a strength only day today, so I'll be giving the knee another rest today. :fingerscrossed:

After taking off the strap, it still felt a tad tender, so I'm going to keep icing'er up for a while until I feel no ill effects post-run. It's really odd that I felt fantastic throughout the entire run, but I felt a bit of tenderness afterwards. Today's a strength only day today, so I'll be giving the knee another rest today. :fingerscrossed:
That is great. Another thing to help it out a bit is to try and stay on flat ground for awhile. Easier said than done, but the hills are what agrevate it a lot and may be the reason in the first place.

Grue - nice job on the race.

Wraith - way to tough it out in difficult conditions. You finished!

2Y2BB - great job. Really outstanding effort.

I am happy to report that I slayed the 20-mile dragon. Yesterday was a beautiful morning for running - I cranked out two 8.25-mile loops at an easy pace (turned out to be 9:14 miles, I wasn't looking at time, just running easy) then did 4 more at Goal Marathon pace (7:40). Ended up beating that goal slightly, doing them at 7:33 pace. Fueled like a madman during the run and it made a huge difference, compared to my last try at 20 when I bailed at 17. I really liked the feeling of running those last miles at pace - my legs were so tired at that point that even when I was running pretty much as fast as I could, my legs couldn't turn over fast enough to put my HR in the anaerobic zone. As a result, I got this cool sensation of feeling like I was running as hard as possible without ever getting tired.

Saturday was 5 miles at Goal Pace. Did them at a 7:36 pace with a 153 average HR. By comparison, those last 4 I did Sunday at 7:33 pace were with a 157 HR, but came after running 16.5 miles.

Now it's Taper Time. At this point, depending on the weather, I'm planning on trying for a BQ (3:20:59). My plan is to go out slightly slower than that pace for the first 16 miles, then pick up the pace over the last 10. If it turns out I can't pick it up enough to BQ, then at least I'll have tried and maybe will still run a decent marathon. All my training has shown me that my best runs come when I start slowly enough to get acclimated before gradually moving into the HR zone just below 160 or so, where - as long as I don't nudge past 161 or 162 HR - I can seemingly run for a long time without slowing down or getting overly tired.

Good job getting that 20 in. Don't let your legs fool you during the taper. Fight the urge to run faster because you are feeling fresh. It will be good to be getting some more rest as well. Enjoy that extra time, too!

Congratulations to all of the racers from the weekend. Grue an Wraith, I am still waiting for the marathon people to send me the text messages that you are finished. As far as I know Grue is still at 30K and wraith is still at the halfway mark. I knew that there would be problems when I got the message that grue started the race 1.4 hours after the elites.

More :) and  from me.

Been resting the IT band as much as possible the past 2 weeks. Swam + bike for cardio. Lots of stretches (every day), rolling (every day), and Ibuprofen as needed. Even done some strength training on some hip muscles. Occasional icing.

It's still giving me trouble. Reading up on other forums and general 'net research, this &*%$# thing could take a long-### time to heal. Tried to do just 3 miles on a treadmill on Saturday - stopped at 2.5 as the knee started hurting and I didn't want to keep pushing it. A freakin' treadmill at a 9:00 pace. With an IT band strap on said leg.

I'm worried (and now almost convinced) that this is not going to hold up over 26.2 miles on Sunday. Really really upset about this as I've trained all summer long. To the point where I started losing sleep over it last night.

I'll be going out to give it a shot and not giving up now. The day of, I'll load up on some Ibuprofen / Aleve before hand. Wear the strap. Focus on shorter strides, and going at a slow, even pace as best I can. And of course, lots of stretching. Hope I can get through this and not a 'DNF'.

If anyone has any last minute suggestions for working through / staving off IT band pain this close to race time, I'd love to hear it. Don't care if I have to duct-tape, popsicle stick, and tennis-ball it at this point.

Congratulations to 2Y on a fantastic tri!!!

And a HUGE Congratulations to gruecd on his BQ finish at Chicago yesterday!! I'm not sure if most of you really realize how truly impressive that is, given the conditions we had to endure. A friend of mine who did Chicago last year in 2:34 was puking his guts out by the 1/2 because of the heat. 64 runners were taken to area hospitals (no deaths, thank God) and 2000 runners dropped out of the race at some point along the course! The race staff and volunteers did a great job and there was plenty of water and gatorade at all of the stops, but it was a true sufferfest out there.

Thanks GB, and thanks to all of you who checked my progress and worried a little that I might not make it. Believe me, I worried about that, too! If there is any question about what can happen when you go out too fast - let me clear it up for you: It can make life very, very difficult on the back end of the race.

My plan was to stick with the 3:50 pace group for as long as possible (hoping for 16 or possibly 20 miles) then tough it out to the end. This plan did not take into consideration 1) the heat, or 2) my cold/allergy issues I've been having lately. Or the fact that I have not enjoyed much success at this distance.

If you saw my splits, you know the story. By Mile 9 I knew I was over-extended. By the time I finished half of the race (2:00:41) it was absolutely not clear to me how I could possibly keep moving another 13.1 miles. It was already 70+ degrees (yellow hazard level) and it was still getting warmer. I don't do very well with "warmer." I was walking about 20% of the time. And for the life of me, I could not drink enough to make me feel hydrated again. My left kidney hurt (and continued to hurt until late last night). Eventually I settled into a rythm where I'd drink 10-12 oz of gatorade & water, walk for a full 1/2 mile to let it settle itself, then run for 2 miles at an 11 min pace. Rinse/repeat for the rest of the race for a 4:50:59 finish (my 2nd slowest ever, but squarely in the 4:40:44 - 4:59:47 range of my other four Chicago Marathon times).

In the end, I finished and I'm happy I kept going. Pain is temporary, hardware is forever. But the struggles I've had for the past month have been very discouraging. Actually, all 3 of my running races have failed to meet my goals this year. Going to take some time to recover and consider what goals I want to set for myself for next year. And hope that when the frost finally hits in a couple of weeks that I see an immediate impact on how I feel.

Actually, that one may be accurate...
