Ran a 10k in June (8 Viewers)

I'm almost to where I can run a 5k now.I know that doesn't sound like much to most of you but 3 years ago I quit smoking (2.5 packs a day for 14 years) and 14 months ago, I was a heavy drinker and weighed 280 lbs. I literally couldn't run 50 yards without stopping. Now I'm down to a fairly solid 205 lbs and have managed to get a lot of my lungs back. I honestly never dreamed that I would run a mile let alone the 3.35 I ran the other day.
 This is all about self-improvement and helping each other, and you really are doing awesome!

The hell it doesnt!!!! That is great. I am pretty sure most of us have been there and I for one am still there. When I first came in here and these guys turned me on to the couch to 5k program I could not run 1 block. I still get the hell yeah feeling when I finish any kind of run. It is a great accomplishment to have the fortitude to do what you have done. Dont you dare belittle it.

I am disappointed with my run this morning. I did 6.01 but it about killed me. It was 83 when I started and I felt good. That is a good 10 degrees cooler then what I am used to. I just ran into a wall after mile 2. My hr was hitting 180 and I just did not feel good for a lot of the run. I ended up walking quite a bit and I was soaked when I made it back. I would say total fail but at least I did it so I cant say total fail. I guess I thought I had turned a corner last week and I was expecting to continue the improvement. I just got ##### slapped by the running gods today.

I am gonna try to link my run here. Not sure if this will work.

As I was running I had a good view of the mountain where the marathon is being held. Looking at that made me feel like more of a sissy.

Just keeping a running tally for myself (wisconsinmidwest) :

Run 1 - Sep 30 = 12.5 laps in ~32:00

Run 2 - Oct 1 == 8 laps in 18:45

Run 3 - Oct 3 == 10.5 laps in 25:50

Run 4 - Oct 5 == 9 laps around my block in 34:00 ((3.30 miles))

Run 5 - Oct 7 == 9 laps around the track in 22:30 (bad run)

Run 6 - Oct 12 = 10.5 laps (3/4 additional walk between) in 25:34

Run 7 - Oct 14 = 10.5 laps in 25:46

Run 8 - Oct 16 = 10 laps in 25:10

71 track laps at 400m (17.75 miles) +3.3 extra miles

Thats from walking/running. My HR at 180 is not normal for me. I am blaming it on the heat. I have other runs where the HR is very steady. I really felt bad during this run. Almost but not quite scary bad if you know what I mean. Kind of a you should not be doing this feeling. I now have a pretty good headache. I am treaing it with Ibuprofen and Guiness.

Maybe it is just me, but the words "marathon" and "mountain" really don't belong in the same sentence.I do have some progress to report. I did a "medicinal run" this afternoon. 3.3 miles of mostly walking/some running. Inside that 3 miles I did intervals of .2, .25, and .4 miles of running. Felt good on all three intervals. I wasn't paying attention to times while running, but I guess I got a bit "Sandy" on the intervals. On review I did those at 8:01/mile, 7:30/mile, and 6:33/mile. Somehow I don't think I should be chugging out 6:30 miles during rehab - whoops.

I started all of this after watching my father have a stroke right in front of me. He is doing good now after having a triple bypass but it was very scary(and freaky) at the time. It is sad that it took something like that to make me educate myself on nutrition and exercise but I am glad the light finally turned on. It is funny how things change when your mortality becomes apparent.

About to hit the sack but thought I would give you guys a quick update before the half marathon tomorrow.

I bought and played in new basketball shoes Wednesday night. Not a good idea. They rubbed the skin raw on my left foot about an inch up from the bottom of my heel. I've been putting skin shield on it but that wears off pretty quick so I'm hoping neosporan and a band ade will protect it.

Turkish and I picked up our packed had dinner and are ready to race tomorrow. I'm picking him up at his house at 5:15.

2Y2B: Thanks again for the tips I hope to see you out there. I'll post my number on my FB page for those who want to check in. Also since you'll be at the race keep an eye for they guy in black UA shorts with red stripe on the side and a black nike compression shirt. I might wear my white pistons hat...

Pizzaguy CONGRATS on getting close to running a 5k. Keep us updated. Also I wish I weighed 205lbs...

Honestly, guys like you impress the hell out of me. It's relatively easy for those of us who ran cross-country and swam in HS, swam or ran in college and for whom staying in shape is part of the job description. we have it easy. the guys who change their lives for the better through hard work are incredible.

these are the posts that keep me going....great work!

Just wrapped up my last of 3 20-milers before NYC. 8:23 pace and still had TONS left in the tank. I'm ready to kick some Big Apple.

Didn't hit my 2 hour time target but I did improve over last years time by 20 minutes so I'm happy with that. Now I'm sitting in a cold bath drinking a sam adams octoberfest... And yes I'm naked

:X seeing you in a wetsuit was enough for me, didn't need the visual. Oh, and, on the race. Sorry I didn't get down there to see you guys. I forgot to set the alarm. Everyone I know has PR'd so far. I am kicking myself for not racing!!PS to Tri-Man, Pete (who you met at Metro Beach, Dexter) ran a 3:49 full this morning with absolutely no training plan. You need to give him a Yoda-esque convincing to train with a plan for a bq try next year as he turns 50.

Had my 9 miler with my running partner this morning. We decided to meet in center city Philly and run the last 9 miles of the HM course we're running next month. Well, we had no idea that there was a Cancer walk (3 day 60 miler) going on there and got detoured around. We took it nice and slow and averaged 10:33/mi and felt great. I don't think my HR went higher than 145 the entire run. My right hamstring and knee were both pretty sore at the end though. Glad tomorrow's just a strength day.

Another Sunday, another distance PR.

2010 Amica Newport (RI) race report:

Short version: This morning, I successfully finished my first (and likely last) ever marathon in a respectable but slower than goal time of approximately 4:09:20 (net time from my watch).

Long version: So this race started inauspiciously as I pulled a bostonfred and showed up to the start line somewhere between 5 and 6 minutes after the gun went off. This was due to a traffic jam outside the designated parking area from which runners and spectators were to take a shuttle to the race start. As our shuttle bus pulled up to the start site, we could see the tail end of the mass of runners crossing the start. So I wasn't able to line up with runners with the same goal pace as me (~9 minutes, hoping for a sub 4 minute marathon).

Once I got underway though, things went great. The weather was perfect. The route was very pretty, running along the shores of Newport and past some incredible mansions. I paced myself very well, hitting the half at 1:58ish (this included a 4-5 minute port-o-potty stop, no time before the race), and hit mile 20 at the 3 hour mark, which had me elated as I knew that I only had to run 10 minute pace for the last 6 miles to finish under 4 hours. I also noticed at this point a large increase in the number of people walking, however I really felt great except for a tinge in my right ankle around this point that lasted maybe 200 meters and a foot cramp that I also toughed it out through. However, around mile 22 my hips, which were sore since at least the halfway point, started screaming at me. I ran a 10:30 and 11:30 minute mile for miles 22 and 23 and hit the mile 24 marker at 3:40ish. At this point each step was just too much pain, and I'm sad to say I had to walk-run the rest of the marathon.

It sucked to get so close to my goal time and fall short, but I only decided on this goal time after a great 20K race midway through my training, and it's clear to me that although my cardiovascular and muscular endurance is good enough, my body hasn't adapted to the pounding of a 3.5 hour+ run. I mentioned here previously that I failed my last training run of 20 miles, pulling short at 17 due to lower leg pain that I think was mitigated by the new shoes I splurged on and have been training with the past 2 weeks - Asics Gel Nimbus. Not sure how I can prevent the hip pain.

Next on my plate is a 5K race two weeks from now, plus I start up indoor soccer again next week. Excited to see how I fare with my increased endurance.

Once again, thanks to all here who answered my noob questions, I really appreciated it. I look forward to hearing from the rest of this weekend's runners.

Some great early reports here! CONGRATS!!!

Good to hear the stories of pizzaguy and bananaman, and Einstein's continued commitment.

I went to Grand Rapids to support my BIL in his first marathon. He just did his first HM last year, so he has come far. Bottom line: He nailed it. Goal was 9:00/miles (so 3:56), and he stayed incredibly steady and did a 3:54. I had a fun time catching him throughout the course (probably ran 8-9 miles myself) and cheering him on as well as anyone else who was 5-10 minutes in front of him.

2Young, please pass my congrats to Pete!!!

Detroit Marathon Race Report:

Start time: 7am

Race: Half Marathon

Saturday evening I went down to pick up my packet. I understand why they do it, but I HATE when I'm forced to do something. They way they setup the expo was packet pickup was in the back and the only way to get there was to snake your way through all the exhibits. I was planning on walking around anyway but I found it an inconvenience walking through everything. So I pick up my and they don't have my shirt size so I end up with a full marathon shirt in 1 size too small. I'm very disappointed because I like these tech shirts.

Race morning and my gut is not feeling well. I think it's something I ate but I'm pretty sure it's just race nerves. I pick up Turkish Harem and we take 2Y2B advice about wear to park and he was spot on. Thanks for the tip!

The race starts and Turkish and I take off it's flat until we get to the bridge. By this time TH is ahead of me (he runs pretty much a full minute faster than I) I start the climb and I have to say the view of the sun coming up over the river and seeing downtown Detroit/Windsor was amazing. Between that and seeing the runners on the bridge was very cool. The climb was rough but I made it no problem. There's some constructions going on so it was a little tight. The Candaian side was cool people lined up through the whole route. Around mile 6 I felt the blister on my left foot start. I ran the whole way until I hit the tunnel climb. It was very warm in there and I just wasn't feeling it. I had to walk a little bit but once I made it out I started running again.

Mile 10 my knee started up. I don't have a lot of cartillige in both of my knees due catching when I played baseball. When I feel start to grind I shut it down no matter what I'm doing. I walked pretty much from mile 11 to 12. I told myself I would run the last 1.1 miles no matter what. It was rough, but I made it.

Now I have a blister on my left foot about an inch long and half an inch wide.

All in all I feel light years ahead of how I felt after last years half. Even mowed the lawn today.

On Deck: The Iceman Cometh MTB race

In the hole: Detroit 10k turkey trot.

Went with a pack of 20+ people for the Freep 5k this morning. It was a bit of a charity event as we are honoring a friend who was diagnosed with non hodgkins lymphoma in August. I ended up not running but walking with the patient and a friend who had only been out of cast for a broken foot for 2 weeks. My daughters 8 and 11 LOVED it. They had some friends there and they ran almost the whole way and kept outrunning the parents so they would have to stop and wait for them to catch up. I have never been to a road race before and if I knew how much security and stuff they had I would have cut them both loose to go as they wishes. In any event they did it in 35 min. My 11yo wants to do the half marathon next year. I am going to encourage her and we will definitely do a 5k in the spring. They both thought it was so cool. My goal is to finish the 5k running in the spring.

eta it was 54 degrees with little wind during our time on the course. Not sure if the weather could have been better.

Now even more upset I didn't run it today. Great Report. Can I Interest You in Adding an AWESOME Trail Race to your schedule? I made pickles & pickled jalapenos for the Bloody Mary after the race.
Sounds cool but that's the day after iceman and I will be driving back from traverse city that day.

1:50:19 in the Newport Half, crushed my goal which felt great but pissed I missed going under 1:50, oh well - more details tomorrow.

D_House, congrats on toughing it out - no way I could have run another 100 yds let alone another 13.1.

Congrats on finishing  Way to gut it out.

D_House -- That is an awesome result for your first marathon. You should be proud. My only real comments are

a) Get there an hour before the start at least, not 5 minutes after and

b) I know you said this is your first and last marathon, but if you do a second, you'll probably find that your training is much easier the next time around. If you can maintain a decent distance base by tossing in some HMs, you'll keep a surprising amount of the fitness you've gained. Somebody in this thread -- probably gruecd but I don't really remember -- commented that these training cycles have a major cumulative effect, and that's definitely been true in my case. Or just drop back to the HM distance, which is satisfying too and lots of fun.

But this is all beside the point for now. Congratulations.

Dexter -- Nice job. Glad to see that the full race report involved less nudity than the short version. I can't even imagine what it would be like to run this distance with cartilage problems.

SofaKings -- My wife and I have done some events like this with our son and daughter too, and you're right that they're very cool. Don't be a stranger in this thread.

Nigel -- That is a sensational time for your first half. Your goal time was just 2 hours, right? You absolutely destroyed that course.

Damn!!!!!!!!!Great job. How did your wife do?

:yucky: Arizona is nice and cool in the winter, right? Building up to 13.1 requires some training, but it's not that bad. Once you make up your mind that you're going to do it, you can jump from 6 to 10 in six weeks or so very conservatively. Maintain that and you're good to go. It's right there in your grasp.

Yes we have perfect running weather in the winter. I hope to advance this winter. This has been a brutal summer/fall for running here.

1:52 somethinglong story short, at the ten mile mark, after 10 miles of her telling me to "slow down, we're going too fast" and my neck getting sore from looking over my shoulder to find her, I ditched her(with her blessing) :shrug:Lots of laughs afterwards about it, but damn, wish I had kicked it earlier to get under 1:50. and the most ridiculous part of all is I was wearing my 7 yr old son's watch - and the f-ing stopwatch on the thing stops going at 99:99 so I had no idea how close I was until it was too late.......

 My wife and I ran exactly 1 HM together and I annoyed her so much she pretty much swore never to run with me again (even though she shattered her PR - ingrate). Great race for you and I am SURE plenty of sub 1:50s are in the future!

:hophead: Awesome technology here.Seriously, don't sweat it. 1:50:19 = 1:49:59. If anybody asks about your time, just say one-fifty and be happy about it. Nineteen seconds is nothing except for those of us who get OCD over this kind of thing. There's a reason why people list their times as 1:50:xx. You killed it and you know it.

Another AWESOME weekend of racing :hophead:

Pizzaguy: Great, inspiring story. Keep it up!

PMB: :excited: Great race! Can't wait to hear the story!

D-House, SofaKing, Dexter, Nigel, and Turkish: Way to represent!!

I had two pretty good workouts this weekend. Saturday was 95 minutes of "No Mercy" Spinervals, and today was a really nice 10 mile run at 8:22 pace, with my HR never getting to 170. It averaged 158 (more like a bike ride than a run for me!!), and my last mile it only reached 167, while running at 7:56 pace.
