Ran a 10k in June (2 Viewers)

Ned, nice job! I'll say again you sound like you're exactly where I was about 8 months ago when I was training for my first HM. How did that last mile feel - were you totally spent or did you still have a little left in the tank?

When's your race again? Time to start thinking about stepping up your goal (if you've established one already).

Thanks guys! It's definitely a great feeling and a huge confidence booster.

The_Man - I won't lie - the last mile was probably 95% effort. I don't think I much more to go when I rounded the last corner heading home. My goal since deciding to do the HM has been to finish under 2 hours with a major emphasis on just finishing. 13.1 still scares me.

ETA: Race is the Philly HM on 11/21. Exactly 1 month today!

Ned: AWESOME run!!!! You've come a long ways!!

I don't think you need to do a whole lot more in the way of swimming. You probably should do short swims from here on out. Short, easy, get the heart rate up, etc. I'd prefer to see you hit the pool three-four more times - do 100 warmup and them knock out ~1000 and call it a day. No more 2500yd days. Keep the volume small enough that you don't aggravate the shoulder.
Sand: I'll see how my shoulder feels, but I'm pretty sure doing 1,000 will cause more damage/pain than good. Best case for me is to get a really short swim in next Wed, then one the following Mon and Wed. to get used to the wetsuit (all very short). Come race day my shoulder will almost certainly be bone on bone the whole time. The great news is that it won't hurt too bad during the race, and I can't cause any more damage. The bad news is that I'll likely need a good 6-8 weeks of rehab to be able to start swimming, throwing a ball, etc. again. My doctor doesn't want me to have it rebuilt yet, as he says the surgery likely won't last long enough for me at my age (now if I were Tri-Man!).

Tri-man doesn't do bone-on-bone. Tri-man only bones flesh.

One of my wife's friends BQed a few weeks ago but got shut out this year. I'm like gruecd in the sense that I'm OCD enough that I'd be one the people clicking and reclicking the registration site right off the bat, but I do feel bad for people who missed out.
If I can spend 45 minutes clicking and reclicking like a madman to get a 3-digit number at some stupid fantasy football site, you better believe I'll click enough to register for Boston if I ever post a qualifying time.
Not that I'm not ready for this subject to die, but I actually thought about this as an example. I had meetings that day and had no opportunity to get to a computer until late. Doomed me to 4-digit status forever.
I had to work that day as well so I had my wife do it for me. :bag:

8 miles on Tuesday, rest day yesterday, 8 miles this morning, and.....swim lesson tonight. A friend of my mine swam D-1 collegiately, and she coaches the local H.S. team. Giving me weekly swim lessons in exchange for helping her train for her first marathon next spring.

Barter system at its best!

Quick In today guys. Ran another 4 last night. Just slow and easy. Legs are starting to feel pretty good. Taking today off then the plan is to do 5 on Saturday and 8 on Sunday. We will see how I am holding up by Sunday. I am hoping to be pain free by then.

Feeling like a man without a plan right now. Took Monday and Tuesday off after the half on Sunday, ran 3 on Wed. and did a 5x800 interval workout, 5 miles total, yesterday. Today off and I'll probably do 6 or so tomorrow morning. Just kind of doing random workouts with no immediate race or goal on the horizon.

Normally I would do 10 today, but I'm still suffering from a variety of little niggling aches and pains, so I'm going to cut it short at 5 and not do a long run this week. It's taken me longer to bounce back from the race than I thought it would. On one hand that's good because it means I left everything on the course, but I'd like to get back into my ordinary routine. Hopefully one more week of relative easy running should do it.

Man, you gotta lotta contacts! Good tradin'!Nigel, I hear what you're saying. After Sunday's race, I'll enter a long stretch of general fitness and base training. That's OK, but it's a different feeling.

Hey, Darrin, how are you healing up??

Just counting down the days until the race now. Cranked out 4 miles this a.m. which were very nondescript from a speed or HR perspective, but my legs felt really good. The nagging soreness in my left hamstring seems to have pretty much gone away. I am ready for it to be race day!

BOURBON CHASE

Have I gotten your attention? Well, the 2010 version started this morning. I'm jealous.

So now that I'll be thinking about this all day and the Facebook page is a bit fallow, I've got a couple things to discuss:

How many are paid up?

Any more good ideas for names? (All Your Bourbon Are Belong to Us is my fave so far)

What will it take to actually get Tri-man, 2Y2BB, The_Man, and Wraith to update their information on the spreadsheet for our entry? :wall:

Ah well, back to work for a while.

All right - just posted my gmail address to the FB discussion group. Give me access to the spreadsheet and I'll fill it out. And who/how much $ do I send? Sorry to be slow - your strange technology frightens me.

You should be good - PM me if not.

Oh Man. I am sorry. I keep forgetting to update the spreadsheet when I go out there. So far, Wraith, Grue, Darrin, Sand have paid in full. I have a partial $34 in. That is all. I will try and remember to update that sheet tonight. I even went out there last night and got into something else and did not check the sheet. Payments should at least be $34 dollars to cover everyone for the $400 that has already been paid, but the total right now is $100 for the entry fee per person. Tri-Man said he is sending his sometime, he is just busy with his doctorate work.I would really like to get some more payments in as I would rather not have the money sitting around just waiting on the additional 800 to come in to make the final payment. If you guys are having second thoughts, please let us know so we can find some additional people who may be interested.

No problem - should I just send the $100 directly to your address on the spreadsheet?

Nigel and Tri-Man: Get off your butts and try this or this. :ptts:

IvanK: listen to your body. Recovery sucks but it's necessary

Grue: Great job finding swim help. I still need it, just haven't sought it. More importantly, is she FBG hot :lmao: ?

My minor update:

Shoulder still grinding, but certainly better than yesterday. More importantly my calves are MUCH better today and I was able to get in a slow six (8:25 pace, with first mile at 9:00, last at 8:05, with all miles quicker than the previous). I'm still backing down on everything as I'm going to try to live by the old: "It's better to be 10% under trained, than to be 1% over trained." Unfortunately I feel much more than 10% under trained, and really close to over trained

Yes, that will work fine.

You new around here or something? The quality of Grue's network is well documented. Sorry about the shoulder pain - I don't have the underlying issue you do but my shoulders hurt all damn summer. It ain't fun.

You're going to do awesome in that race - believe that!!

As documented previously, I'm paid in full. I love that team name.

I have no idea where this alleged spreadsheet is - I've looked for it. :lmao:

Our Facebook page. Look bottom left for the links page. Go in there and the spreadsheet link is right there. PM me your gmail address (or an email that you use to log into Google) and I'll make sure you have access. That goes for any of the other guys who don't have access to it yet, as well.

Seriously. You had to ask??

Rest day today - planning a long trail run tomorrow morning (almost certainly going to get rained on - super).

Last night I started reviewing the Pfitz stuff grue sent me. Lots to absorb in that 18/55 plan. Assuming for the moment that I do a spring marathon, then incorporating the Pfitz stuff will be important Jan-April. After that my focus will be on triathlons, so I'll probably roll with a FIRST-like plan for the rest of the spring & summer to balance my training. Outside of Bourbon I don't see any races in the fall hitting the schedule. Maybe go back to Tucson in December and take another crack at the marathon there, now that they changed the course back to remove the ####### huge hill from mile 6.5 - 8. Or maybe go for a PR at a 1/2 in the fall and put the marathon distance on the shelf for a while...

May 7 - Wisconsin Marathon OR May 15 - Green Bay Marathon

May 28 - Soldier Field 10 miler

Late June - Twin Lakes Sprint Triathlon

July 10 - Lake Zurich Olympic Triathlon

August 7 - Bangs Lake Olympic Triathlon

Other races - ??? Doesn't seem to be much locked in yet from what I saw.

Seriously. You had to ask??
I did have to ask because :useless:

I LOVE: All Your Bourbon Are Belong to Us :lmao:
1) go to Facebook2) click grue's profile

3) under "friends," click "see all"

4) profit

:excited:
Been there done that (MANY times). Why am I being questioned for wanting to see a pic of her? I'm not doubting him, just want to see a pic?edited to add: Please peruse my friends if you like. The ratio of the number of "quality" friends might not be as high, but there is high quality, and a high number.

I'm just giving you grief, GB. Grue is proud of his stable (as I know you are) for good reason. Plus, I feel guilty when a oogle your contacts - at least one in particular.

If someone is oogle-able on the innerwebs there should be no shame or guilt as long as you are doing it without a spouse/significant other/or your boss knowing.

Kind of lame and out of date in you ask me.Can't you come up with something FBG related playing off of "Have a nice season, guy", "Been that way since day one", "Shuked", "glllll peace", "Cornhole"? Maybe Kentucky Cornholers

I kind of like it. Not sure something like "Have a nice bourbon, guy" is going to mean a lot. Here's how I'm spending this afternoon of my taper: planning the 18-week training schedule for my next marathon by creating a spreadsheet that incorporates my own modifications to the Higdon Advanced I Program. There might be something wrong with me.

I'm thinking maybe the Vermont City Marathon on Memorial Day 2011. Although waiting 3 months to start training for my next marathon might be too long.

Can one of you guys point me to a decent bike trainer online? Don't need anything fancy, but I don't want a piece of crap, either.

TIA!

Kind of lame and out of date in you ask me.
Sorry, but  :(
Glad someone asked for an explanation! I was totally :whoosh: But then, I'm not exactly the target market for that kind of stuff. I suggested SuBourbon Express, but it didn't take. :banned: Wraith, I'd suggest that you be careful with your race calendar. A spring marathon will put a crimp in your base training for tri's ...April/May will be heavy running, then recovery, if you do a May marathon. It will be challenging to gear up for early tri's after that. Then again, since we both know we're both itching to compete against each other in a tri ...go ahead. Because then we'll both be dealing with the spring marathon dynamics. :banned:

May 7 - Wisconsin Marathon OR May 15 - Green Bay Marathon
Don't you dare.
I know GB - but it's basically a local race and it's a week further out from Soldier Field, which is really my only "must do" running race for next year. Two weeks is probably fine and if I can get clearance from the tower for overnight travel, Green Bay is Plan A. But I have fish to fry before I get to that one.

10-4By the way, free place to stay for GB should help with the wifey....

I hear you, but don't forget with FIRST that I'll be swimming and biking throughout my training, so I won't be too far behind going into the season. We'd better be doing at least 2 of those races together, my friend! Heck maybe even slip a trail race back in there, too!!

Keep an eye on Nashbar. They'll usually run sales in the late fall. Personally I don't have one, but I have access to a computrainer studio. Regardless, you couldn't get me to ride one of those thing.By the way...you've mentioned running, swimming, and biking in the last 24 hours. Watcha got cooking???
