Ran a 10k in June (3 Viewers)

The heat just kicked my ### hard.

Got up at 6. Heat index already over 92. Muggiest I can ever remember it. Oh my.

First mile was my best mile yet @ 10:07. After that, I was absolutely forced to walk/run/walk/run. I was drenched and I felt like if I pushed it any harder I would start to get heat exhaustion which I'm prone to.

I did mix it up with some sprint, walk, sprint, walk and I added an extra 10 minutes to my usual scheduled work out time. It's the best I could do today...slightly disappointed but glad I kept healthy.
Don't #### with the heat. You have to slow way down in these conditions. Starting with a PR mile is a prescription for ugliness, which you found out.

Absolutely found out the hard way man. I was on the brink a few times of getting into a bad situation for sure.Not to mention my entire first mile is uphill...Sunday is my next scheduled run...I'm going to switch it up once a week and just run the track. I believe on a track I can get 10 minute miles in based on the flat surface and it should only be in the 60's Sunday morning. A nice break in the heat will be very welcome.

 
Our heat broke yesterday, so I was able to get in todays's 13 with no problems. For some reason, I felt really sluggish for the first 4-5 miles (no obvious reason why ), but everything went fine after that and I finished up by doing the last 3 miles on the track with 10 stride-outs worked in along the way.

I have a half-marathon coming up in September, so it's time to start working in a little more speed. I've done some smallish tempo runs the past several weeks (7 w/ 4 @ LT pace, about 20-25 seconds faster than I'm hoping to run the half), but I think I should add a little distance there, or change things up with some 800s or 1600s or something.

Either your GHMP is too slow, or your tempo pace is too fast. Tempo runs should be done somewhere between HM and 15K pace, and there's no way those two numbers should be 20-25 seconds/mile apart.
 
Oh, and if my Boston debacle wasn't enough proof that I'm human, my tempo run last night sucked, too. It was 80ish and still relatively humid, and for whatever reason I thought it was still a good idea to try a workout. I rationalized this in my brain by deciding that I'd make it "easier" and do 2 x 2-mile tempo versus doing it all at once. Did about 2.5 miles warmup, then busted out the first set just fine at 6:25 pace. Jogged a half-mile easy, then started the second set. Made it about a half-mile, and my legs were shot. Walked a little bit before finishing the third tempo mile (why?) and then ran home. Nine miles total.

Moral of this story? Running in the heat all week takes a cumulative toll on the body. Also, I suck in warm weather.

Yeah...the heat continues to suck.Im fondly remembering the cold mornings in February as not so bad compared to the heat now.And a 2.5 mile warmup always gets me.Guy in high school used to run a 3-4 mile course as a warm up before running the mile and half mile in meets.Worst meet I ever had was my junior year when my coach put me in the mile again that guy and his rival from another school. The rival went on to run in the 3000m steeplechase at the Atlanta Olympics.I got dusted...badly.

Is that true even for HM preparation? I know its true for marathon training, but I feel like I'm not getting enough fast running in right now. Basically here's what I'm doing. My most recent 10K pace was 7:49 (48:41). That's very slightly soft because I wasn't fully recovered from my previous marathon, but it's not that far off, so let's so my proper 10K pace is 7:45. My HM PR is 1:48:xx, so let's call it an 8:15 pace. I'd like to get that down to 8:10, which I think is reasonable if conditions are right. With those paces in mind, I've been doing my LT miles at 7:50-8:00, a little slower than 10K pace but faster than HMP. I get that that's probably too fast for marathon training, but I'm concerned that I'm not doing enough running at or faster than goal pace for the half. I'm open to any and all input here. Weirdly, I feel like I know a lot more about training for 26.2 than I do about training for 13.1.Edit: Just saw your last post. Trying to run hard in the heat really, really sucks. This is not meant as a passive aggressive insult in the least, but I'm glad to see the heat can also affect the best and make them a bit more human. I guess starting out, you feel like it will be no big deal until your legs won't go anymore. That's what I experienced this morning on an obviously far lesser scale.Hopefully we get a break soon.

The more and more I study this stuff, the more I think there's a strong disconnect between how we set our pace for specific workouts. I'm getting back on to my HR soapbox...LT and pace are 2 different things, in my mind. LT is the highest bpm that your heart can crank out the lactate faster than your muscles are creating it. That's a pre-determined number that won't change. Per Pfitz's book, that's 82-91% of your max HR. That's never going to change no matter how hard you work.What will change is your pace that your body can hold at LT. As you get stronger, you'll be able to run faster at LT. That's where I think the confusion comes in to play. The given 15K-HM pace is a rough gauge on where your LT HR would be at for those that don't know their LT HR. I think that's a bit misleading if your PRs are soft/old. If they are and you start to think "well I'm pretty sure I can do a 10K in xx:xx", now you're making guestimates on old numbers and applying it to a rough estimate. It's easy to get off course. Not to say it's wrong, but it's not ideal. This is why I'm falling in love with HR training. While I was running around campus this morning, I found that I was more tired at mile 5 or so than what I should have been given my conditioning, pace, etc., but I couldn't quite decide if I was really struggling or if it was just in my head. And then I thought to myself "Be careful about posting that thought in the FFA, unless you want to invite a reply like 'Gee, if only there was some sort of device you could attach that would tell you how hard your CV system is working in real time.'" Thanks for not letting me down. :lol:

Yeah, on reflection I think I'm doing my "tempo runs" faster than a real LT workout. I definitely need to work in the faster speeds though.

Hated them at the time...of course I was just starting to whip myself into shape and was carrying some extra insulation. :)
In total seriousness, my personal Run Of The Year so far was a 17-miler back in early March. It was 2 degrees I believe when I went out, and I spent the next couple of hours running through a completely deserted campus since we were on spring break. That was a really awesome and fun run.
 
Good stuff - helps very much. On my way to the sporting goods store shortly. Appreciate you reaching out with an assist here. I've always had blister issues and it never occurred to me that there's a special type of socks I should be wearing. This is big...I hope it helps.
it will. this thread turned me on to sweat wicking socks. not only do i wear them when i run, i wear them when i wear tennis shoes out and about in general. :thumbup:

:goodposting: I was thinking the same thing as I read Grue's post. To answer your "why?" = why not? You had to get home somehow,and your body was primed to get some LT work in. You certainly got it!!Ned: Great advice regarding speed work. I think half mile repeats (with quarter mile recoveries = Yasso's) are the best way to gain speed for the half distance. I also do some mile repeats as well, but don't think I get as much benefit. ________________________________My update:I'm sorry for not being in here as much as usual, but it's aggravating being in here, without being able to post updates. I got my MRI and it revealed arthritis in both hips and a likely torn meniscus. My Dr. assumes that the knee problem added to the aggravation of the arthritis = I changed my gait, and have caused soft tissue damage in my groin. He thinks I won't need a replacement for 10-15 years, but couldn't promise anything. The upside is that he doesn't think short runs/bikes will hurt it anymore, and might actually help. I have had three, 2 mile runs in the past week, and bike rides of 12, 15 & 18 miles. It doesn't seem to be hurting it anymore, though there is still a constant pain. I am having a cortisone and steroid shot in my groin (sonofa#####!)next Wednesday. It will be X-ray assisted, and might require me to go under due to the pain involved. Hopefully the cortisone will give pain relief, and the steroid will help heal the inflammation. My only goal through all of this is to be somewhat ready for the Bourbon Chase. I'm hoping to build to a long run of 13 miles prior to "Go Time" (October 7). I thus have 11 weeks to go from nothing to something. My 2 mile runs have been brutal, as I not only haven't really run at all since last December, but I'm also trying to start from scratch in extreme heat (normal TX summer weather). If I can add one mile to my long run every week between now and then, I'll be up to 13. I'll add a little bit of speed work in September, but don't have any visions of gaining much speed as I have no base to work off of. I'm hoping the change in weather on race day, will lower my HR and allow me to have some speed for the Chase. :fingerscrossed:

I have similar, fond memories of various runs while fighting through sleeting, 35 degree rain, trudging through fresh snow, or sliding around on trails. Despite such conditions, we can overcome them. We can't overcome the heat and humidity.And another :hifive: to the HR chatter!!! Well-stated comments, Ned.

Haven't been in here much the last couple of weeks, hope everybody is staying safe working out in the heat.

Did an 18 miler last Saturday at about 5:30am. It was already about 80 degrees with absurd humidity. Did 10:15s which I was thrilled with. Had two different people run various parts with me; they brought powerade & gu which helped a ton. Haven't run since because of the heat and a ridiculous work load this week.

5k report...nice and humid today. Had a friend from college mesage me on facebook to see if I was running today. Met up with him beforr it and he said he had run it in 24 the last year but was not in as good of shape now. We hung together at the started til I passed him about two miles in. Felt good throughout holding a pace around 8:44. Held it the whole time and destroyed my pr. 27:20 Thought I was going to hit the wall near the end but once I voted back on my old track I kept pushing...especially with a guy on my heals and I was not going to grt passed on that track.

I will see where I finished later when its posted. I think I did win the unofficial sweat contest.

I'm a sweater anyway, that humidity just intensifies it. But it feels good. 27:20 is a great time with that level of heat - nicely done.Just 10 years ago I was running 18:30-20:00 5Ks on the high school cross country team...I'm still so amazed by the fact I'd be thrilled with breaking 29:00 minutes only 10 years later. What a difference a decade makes.

This morning was bad as far as my running goes, I stopped after 1.25 miles. I didn't feel great when I woke up and considered not going at all, and I should have went with that. My legs were bothering me a bit, and I picked up a cough somewhere. I am driving to Indiana on Wednesday for the wife's reunion so running this week will be a bit tough, so I think I am just going to relax and get back to it when I get back. I will still run a bit while there but no speed work or long runs.

I also decided to again get serious about losing the last of the excess weight. I eliminated snacking and so far have had all vegetables for the last two days. I will be so ready for The Chase, so no worries there. Since my legs are rather short I am going to treat them all like a 5K go all out at the start and try to hang on.

Sho - way to go on the PR. I can't wait to see what you can do in cooler temps.

I did the 1st part of a 6/4 "recovery" double this morning (if you can call it that in this heat), and I'll head back out this afternoon/tonight for the 2nd part. Going out with a buddy tonight, which should make it very interesting when I try rolling out of bed tomorrow morning for a relatively fast 17. You'd think I'd learn. :shrug:

This was sooo much fun! You'll have a blast. I'm not sure if they are all as hilly as this one; it was at Afton Alps (one of the local ski hills). Couple tips, I wouldn't wear sunglasses again as I lost mine on one of the obstacles. Wear clothes that you have no problem leaving behind, bring a fresh set for post race, and bring a towel or two. I would also wear real shoes (wore my Vibram Five Fingers) because I've got monster bruises on my arches from all of the rocks (thought a ski hill would be grassier). I went out fast so I wouldn't have to deal with crowds, but my friends said it wasn't too bad being in the pack. Not sure what my official time will be since the results tent came down due to wind, but I think it was under 30 minutes because I finished before the next wave started. They said results should be posted in a day or two. 10 minute miles doesn't seem like much but I was busting ### over the hills and obstacles.

I would also wear real shoes (wore my Vibram Five Fingers) because I've got monster bruises on my arches from all of the rocks (thought a ski hill would be grassier). I went out fast so I wouldn't have to deal with crowds, but my friends said it wasn't too bad being in the pack. Not sure what my official time will be since the results tent came down due to wind, but I think it was under 30 minutes because I finished before the next wave started. They said results should be posted in a day or two. 10 minute miles doesn't seem like much but I was busting ### over the hills and obstacles.
Sounds great.I don't think our course is very hilly...and yes, my plan is for older clothes and an older or retired pair of running shoes. Probably one Ive been training in lately that are about on their last legs...if I get them cleaned up ok they will then be lawn mowing shoes.

When you decide to do a long run "relatively fast," what does that mean relative to marathon pace? Obviously it's not going to be at pace, but is this closer to pace than normal, a regular long run pace with a fast finish, or what?
I'll probably be running with a dude who ran 2:36 last year, so I really just mean that I'll probably end up with an average pace a lot closer to the faster end of McMillan's prescribed long run pace (7:23) than the slower end (8:23).
 
5k report...nice and humid today. Had a friend from college mesage me on facebook to see if I was running today. Met up with him beforr it and he said he had run it in 24 the last year but was not in as good of shape now. We hung together at the started til I passed him about two miles in. Felt good throughout holding a pace around 8:44. Held it the whole time and destroyed my pr. 27:20 Thought I was going to hit the wall near the end but once I voted back on my old track I kept pushing...especially with a guy on my heals and I was not going to grt passed on that track.I will see where I finished later when its posted. I think I did win the unofficial sweat contest.

I've done some smallish tempo runs the past several weeks (7 w/ 4 @ LT pace, about 20-25 seconds faster than I'm hoping to run the half), but I think I should add a little distance there, or change things up with some 800s or 1600s or something.
Either your GHMP is too slow, or your tempo pace is too fast. Tempo runs should be done somewhere between HM and 15K pace, and there's no way those two numbers should be 20-25 seconds/mile apart.
Is that true even for HM preparation? I know its true for marathon training, but I feel like I'm not getting enough fast running in right now. Basically here's what I'm doing. My most recent 10K pace was 7:49 (48:41). That's very slightly soft because I wasn't fully recovered from my previous marathon, but it's not that far off, so let's so my proper 10K pace is 7:45. My HM PR is 1:48:xx, so let's call it an 8:15 pace. I'd like to get that down to 8:10, which I think is reasonable if conditions are right. With those paces in mind, I've been doing my LT miles at 7:50-8:00, a little slower than 10K pace but faster than HMP. I get that that's probably too fast for marathon training, but I'm concerned that I'm not doing enough running at or faster than goal pace for the half. I'm open to any and all input here. Weirdly, I feel like I know a lot more about training for 26.2 than I do about training for 13.1.Edit: Just saw your last post. Trying to run hard in the heat really, really sucks. It's like I can almost feel my brain cooking after just a couple of miles.
The more and more I study this stuff, the more I think there's a strong disconnect between how we set our pace for specific workouts. I'm getting back on to my HR soapbox...LT and pace are 2 different things, in my mind. LT is the highest bpm that your heart can crank out the lactate faster than your muscles are creating it. That's a pre-determined number that won't change. Per Pfitz's book, that's 82-91% of your max HR. That's never going to change no matter how hard you work.What will change is your pace that your body can hold at LT. As you get stronger, you'll be able to run faster at LT. That's where I think the confusion comes in to play. The given 15K-HM pace is a rough gauge on where your LT HR would be at for those that don't know their LT HR. I think that's a bit misleading if your PRs are soft/old. If they are and you start to think "well I'm pretty sure I can do a 10K in xx:xx", now you're making guestimates on old numbers and applying it to a rough estimate. It's easy to get off course. Not to say it's wrong, but it's not ideal. This is why I'm falling in love with HR training. It's an up to the minute gauge on where your fitness is at.I agree with you on needing to run faster to improve HM speed. The LT workouts are geared more towards the marathon. I don't think LT workouts are ideal for improving HM speed. I think Fartlek or faster paced tempo runs are where it's at. I wouldn't be shy about approaching 10K paces in some of your tempo runs. I'd even work in some 5K paced runs at shorter distances.
I am also leaning heavily towards HR workouts rather then pace. This has every thing to do with the heat and i have to admit i have not run for over a week now. It is just to brutal with the heat. I am worried i could do some real damage to myself. I am contemplating going out tomorrow but you can bet it will be slow as hell.

I did the 1st part of a 6/4 "recovery" double this morning (if you can call it that in this heat), and I'll head back out this afternoon/tonight for the 2nd part. Going out with a buddy tonight, which should make it very interesting when I try rolling out of bed tomorrow morning for a relatively fast 17. You'd think I'd learn. :shrug:
You are an animal and no I did not think you would learn when it comes to slowing it down a bit.

What a difference flat terrain makes. Easily crushed my personal best times in every regard.

Back to the hilly course tomorrow though. Today was almost a "break" running on the track because of how I nearly died Friday running.

I hit 3.5 miles today in just a hair under 35 minutes. Very satisfied.

 
2 miles this morning in 18:05. My knee and form held up pretty well. That made for 4 runs on the week for a total of 5.8 miles in 51:37. I'm getting close to the point where my conditioning is holding me back more than my weak knee. Feels great to be back at it.
Ran the same 2 mile route this morning in 17:08. Knocked off a minute in 2 weeks. I'll bump it up to 3 miles in a few weeks, assuming no setbacks.I'm beginning to feel light and quick again, no longer clomping down the trail like a clydesdale.
 
I'm in love with MAT/deep tissue massages. I'd strongly recommend going to see a certified MAT therapist to get those annoying aches/pains looked at. I went back to the MT on Friday afternoon to get my IT band worked on. She did some more MAT tests and found a few more weak spots in my right hip that made a world of difference. She spent a good 30 minutes working on my right leg and all I can say is Wow....

Yesterday I met up with my old running buddy. Had an easy 4mi recovery run. It was great to run with someone for a change.

I set the alarm for 4am this morning to get out ahead of the heat to get 12 in. 45mins of hitting the snooze and I finally dragged my lazy ### out of bed. As I was getting geared up I heard the weatherman on tv say the heat index was already 90 degrees (6am). Just fn great. I lost 7.2lbs during the run, but felt great. I followed the Pfitz long run plan and pushed the backside of the run towards the top end of the long run HR range (163). With the heat, I blew through that at mile 11, but still felt good. It was that "I'm tired but feel strong" feeling. Last 4 miles were at a 9:24 pace with avg HR of 167. Overall pace was 9:36 with 154 avg HR. I pushed it a bit too much at the end, but very happy given the conditions.

:lmao: My two morning epiphanies:

Lunge steps - in lieu of running in the heat, humidity, and rain, I did lunges and squats in the basement. It struck me that doing lunge steps is a great time to practice the foot strike. Instead of landing on the heel during the lunges, land on the midsole/ball of the foot. It's all low impact, so it won't stress the calves, but it does help to acclimate to a better foot strike.

My shoulder - I've had pain for the past month and some restrictive movement. I've been trying to sort out if it's a muscle that I can massage out or let heal, or if it's maybe tendons/ligaments. But it hasn't gone away, and it bothers me ...can't sleep on my left side comfortably, and certain movements are sore. Looking in the mirror this morning, I happened to raise both elbows up and away from my body ...and noticed that my left shoulder is waaay unbalanced/higher than my right shoulder. I do believe I've got a dislocation in the shoulder. Could it be that I've tolerated that for about a month now? Could I have carried on with most activities with this? Anyway, time to see the doc.

Bounced back from Thursday night's craptastic LT effort with a really strong 17-miler today. Hooked up with a couple of buddies of mine (one of whom is a 2:36 marathoner) and headed out around 8 AM. It wasn't really a MP run, but I wanted to be on the faster end of the 7:23-8:23 pace range that McMillan prescribes for a 2:59:59 marathon, and that's exactly what we did. Averaged 7:22, with miles 5-13 all between 6:51-7:09. It wasn't as warm out there as it has been (low 70s), but it's still pretty humid. All-in-all, very happy with this run.

Oh, and all of this after being out until about 12:30 and not getting to sleep until well after 1:00. I'm convinced that I run better after a night of drinking beer. :banned:

tri - GL with that shoulder. Hopefully since you've dealt with it for a month that it's just a minor thing.

ETA: I decided to join my brother in a 3D archery shoot after my run this morning. I can't believe I had the energy for that, given this crazy heat. This is the exact reason I got back into running. The 2009 me probably would've blown off the shoot due to the heat. It feels good to be in good enough shape to run a kick### 12 miler and then shoot right after. :thumbup:
