Ran a 10k in June (8 Viewers)

We interrupt today's Heart-Rate Extravaganza ( ) to wish The_Man good luck on his race this weekend. Knock 'em dead, dude!

We now return to your regularly scheduled programming.

Good luck to The_Man this weekend. You have put in great effort for this.

---------

As far as the heart rate stuff goes. I think it would only make sense that it would go up when you are getting excited for the start of the race and then after reality sets in that you are running for awhile for it to go back down.

Kind of like saying your pee pee gets really hard when a attractive female walks by only to have it go down after she is gone.

-------------

Meh for me lately as I have had a head cold and have not felt much like doing anything more less running so I have been resting.

Well...I track mine...but don't really train by it at this point.

And definite GL to The_Man.

On my end, not much going on. Since the last half my motivation is just not there in my last few runs.

Did 5 last night with 3 tempo in the middle and just never felt into it.

Kind of labored through the tempo miles and just never felt "right". Nothing hurt...knee has been good after some rest. Right calf doing better too.

Just never had a good feel during the run.

Hopefully a change of scenery and a pre-game/pre-meal run tomorrow morning in Memphis will get me back on track.

I think part of it is that there is no race for a while for me and this training is not really geared towards anything right now other than maintenance of my fitness level and continuing to lose weight. Have to come up with my new goals (and a big change in my training regimen coming in the new year).

If your HR stays elevated for 4 hours, you may want to see a doctor...unless, of course, you are a mortal like most of us and running a marathon (this does not apply to those sub-3 guys who can get done long before the doctor is needed).

Or if you are shacking up with Gio Ott. Just sayin'... :bye:

All I'm saying is that it IS possible to run a good marathon without obsessing over heart rate. In fairness, it's possible that one's ability to gauge "perceived effort" is just something that comes with time, too.

Im probably doing it more out of my own obsession with data. The more data I can look at and analyze the better. Not as much with obsessing over it while running...but analyzing after the fact.

The_Man -- looking forward to your success this weekend!!!

I'm running an 8 mile 'prediction run' on T'giving Day. It's a small (60-80?) gathering up in Grand Rapids near my sister's house. $5 cash into the pot: Most accurate male and female split the pot. 2nd place winners get a pair of shoes. I put down 1:05:20, or an 8:10/mile pace. That's around the upper end of my slow breathing pattern (3/3 ..breath on each third step), so we'll see how it works out. The top male last year missed by 5 seconds.

Really pulling for The_Man this weekend. I'll be anxiously waiting to see how things go. You've earned a good run!!

Thanks, Guys! But please don't get me too geeked this early. Though I know it feels like Friday already. I will try to check in by 1 on Saturday for those who want an update. This is kind of an old-school marathon -- only 400 runners, most of whom seem pretty good, and almost no crowds. So there's no tracking or anything like that.

I definitely feel fit, but also know that my mileage base is way low. I'm really, really, really, going to try to run consistent 7:40 miles for the first 20 miles, and then hope I've conserved enough energy to sustain that pace through the finish. If I can resist the urge to bust out some sub-7:30 miles when I'm feeling good near the halfway mark, then I'm confident I can crank out 7:40s for 22 or 23 miles - it's in that final 5K or so where we'll see if my mileage base was sufficient or not.

Thank you again to everyone and have a great Thanksgiving!

Good luck! Run like you stole something!

What's a decent pace on an elliptical? I can do around 2.5 miles in about 30 min when I'm pushing it. Seems slow, but that keeps my HR around 130-140.

Monday my back pain went from "only when running" to it "only hurts when I move". Yesterday was more of the same, I hobbled around work all day. This morning I woke up pain free, but I don't know why. I am going to take it easy the rest of the weekend and see how it feels while running on Monday or Tuesday.

I want to wish everyone in the thread, and the FFA all together, a very Happy Thanksgiving. I hope you all have a wonderful time with your family and friends tomorrow. Be safe, be well, and I will see you (figuratively) out on the roads soon.

Ned - Jesus....

Stayed up way too late last night. Showed up to the Detroit Turkey Trot 10k just in time to get into the corral and start running. No stretching, didn't even have my Garmin or Music on. Anyone who has done this race knows the first half mile is jammed packed, very tight. So I'm fighting with people trying to get my gear together. Settled in and felt good for most of the run. I did beat my BIL which was a good feeling and even had a couple of "kills" ;o). I think I set a new 10k best but because I can't use my Garmin data I have to wait for the official results.

The entire Karamazov clan did the Thanksgiving 5K today. This is a small and highly informal event -- probably 100 or so total entrants. My daughter (10) rode her bike through the race, my son (12) ran 24:05 despite not having run more than a mile and half in well over a year, and my wife ran this with a friend for fun. She's doing the Tucson marathon in a couple of weeks, so this was just a relaxed taper run for her. I managed to turn in a 22:25, which was only 15 seconds off my PR and good for 15th place overall.

GL to The_Man and anybody else racing today or this weekend. And happy Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

You Turkey Trotters are better people than I am. I was signed up for one, but I had too much to drink last night and didn't get to bed until almost 2:00, so there was no way in hell I was getting up at 6:30 to run a stupid 5-miler. Oh, well. $22 down the drain.

Instead, slept until 9:00, watched the Packers beat up on the Lions and that idiot Ndamukong Suh, and then ran an easy 10-miler. Family stuff tomorrow, but I'm gonna get my long run done in the morning, since I'm going to watch the Badgers play Pedophile State on Saturday in Madison.

Right now, debating if I wanna go out somewhere and watch the 49ers/Ravens game, since I don't have the NFL Network at home. Decisions, decisions.

Ditto except I got up at 5:30 and ran a 10k

Change of scenery helped.

Went out for 5 today and decided I would just go with whatever pace I was comfortable at...did not look at the garmin til I was 4 miles in just to see how much further I needed to get my 5 (as I was a bit unclear on exactly how far the route I was going).

Ended up averaging 9:06...HR was 160 average...not terrible. Never felt bad at all during the run and was just comfortable.

Far cry from that run Tuesday night.

Then proceeded to devour the Thanksgiving lunch and enjoy the Packer game. Sorry Ned.

Happy Thanksgiving to all...

What is your wife's target for the marathon? I am running the same marathon.

Paced my brother in law to a 1:42 Half in Atlanta this am. Tough, hilly course and I was only 3 weeks past my marathon pr so I can't really complain.

Dexter - improving a 10k by :30/mile ain't no joke. That's a big jump in performance.

Workhorse - damn, that's bleeding moving for dead legs after a marathon.

Ivan - ridiculous what kids can just go out and do, isn't it?

---

On my end I got in a nice 8 mile run after a while off. The run was uphill (point to point), I had stomach cramps the whole way from the 14 lbs of turkey in my gut, my pace sucked balls, and my HR was through the roof. But I was a bit sad when it was over - it was a spectacular day and I enjoyed being back.

Just wanted to thank everyone in here that weighed in when fatguyinalittlecoat was asking about knee pain a couple weeks ago, especially gruecd, who actually told him what running store to go for new shoes. He ran his 10K yesterday without any knee problems and beat his goal of finishing under 50 minutes (they haven't posted the race results, but it was 49:something). Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

ETA: pronoun trouble

Ivan: You're a very lucky man to have a running family. Your son has some talent! GL to your wife!

prosopis: Are you READY? I had no idea yours was coming up so soon. :excited:

grue: I really like Aaron Rodgers. I just have to root for the underdogs on Thanksgiving day games. It's more fun that way. Enjoy the ride!

Workhorse: Dang dude. Being a Pacer to a 1:42 shortly after a marathon is no joke.

Dexter: Congrats on the PR! Just like Sand said, a 30sec per mile improvement is a major achievement.

FGILC: Great job on the 10K! Glad this crew was able to help.

 This is a great thread just full of help. I sometimes feel selfish in here as I dont have much to contribute but I am always taking. I only that several years from now I will be able to help someone the way people in here have helped me.

To be honest I am more then a little worried.

They just posted the results and apparently my time was actually 48:18. That's way faster than I thought I could do. Really pleased.

A whole lot of nice races, guys! :hifive: :hifive: :hifive:

Darrin - you know, I've been thinking that you need to commit strongly to strength/flexibility/core work to support your running. Your recent back problems reinforce that belief.

prosopis - just give it your best in Tucson. Remember how tremendously far you've come these last few years!!! Completing the marathon will be a huge success for you. As others like to point out, don't plan on a time goal. Goal A will be to finish. Be ready to celebrate the accomplishment, not fear any failure. Some structured run/walk pacing early on could set you up for a good, steady finish.

Well, my first ever prediction run yesterday taught me that I'm not very good at predicting! Unfamiliar, 8 mile course (but a nice, paved bike trail). I predicted 8:10 mile, but ended up at 7:50/mile and missed my target by 2:40! lol I didn't win half the pot. The good news was that it was a very comfortable run ...I knew I'd gone a bit fast early on, and really just cruised it along after the first mile or two. It was nice to roll along with such easy miles. I worked hard this morning, though - eight, hard-paced, quarter-mile hill repeats.

Took four days off to get extra rest from that madness of a marathon. Its incredible the abuse your body takes in one of these things.

I did an easy 5mi today and it was about as expected - 9:55/148. Very tender hammies and stiff everything else made for a fun run. I am dedicating the next few weeks to just enjoying the run and putting zero pressure on myself to perform. I've training my ### off for more than a year straight now. It's time for some recharging. :coffee:

Get a massage. Seriously.

I wanted to do 20 today and ended up with 16. It got very dark out sooner then I expected and to be honest I was hurting. I feel like I did something for sure. It is a good feeling

She's hoping for a 3:50, which would be a BQ (although she probably wouldn't actually be able to register with that time). Plan B is 3:XX:XX.

 Good luck to her. That is much faster then me so I dont have to worry about pulling a wheelhouse with the race stalking. ;)

8.5 this morning...never had a great amount of energy...wind always felt like it was in my faced.

But goid to get another run done while away from home.
