Anyone here kayak? I made a Jell-O shot fueled commitment Saturday Night to do a Triathlon in July that substitutes the swim with a 2.1 mile kayak on Lake St. Clair. Looking at last years results, my average performance in sprint tris bests everyone in my AG. So, if I were to borrow one, with zero practice, would I be miserable and basically suck for 2.1 miles, or is lake kayaking a relatively simple thing to pick up? I am leaning towards buying one. My community has a private lakefront park with a rack that provides rental space, cheap. I do not want to spend a ton, but wonder if there certain things I need to look for (material, length, etc)? It would be used on lakes only and for recreation as much as training. I doubt I'd fish off the thing, but who knows. One of the motivating factors in buying one, is that I've hear there is a group out of the park that does a kayak a few times a month where they head out to a sand bar and set up a grill, etc. D I C K ' S Sporting Goods has been sending me a bunch of stuff lately, as I use their rewards program, so I may look there first (gotta pick up some baseball spikes for my son, so I'll be there anyway). TIA for any info!Decent week so far, getting is a 2,000 yd swim Monday, 16 mile ride yesterday and a 2,500 yd swim yesterday. Found something odd with yesterday's swim. Very much by accident, I was really fast (for me). For the last month, I've made Mondays my speed swim day and Wednesdays my endurance day. While I didn't directly time the swim, I am an OCD creature of habit and almost always get in the pool at almost the exact same time (and yesterday was no different). I will do a few different things on endurance days, but they are usually done in either 2 or 3 sets and total 2,500 yards. Yesterday, I did a mile (72 lengths) and then wrapped with an additional 28 lengths for the 2,500. When I got out, I looked at the clock and noticed I was out 5 to 6 minutes earlier than usual. I felt fast doing the swim and I think I have an idea where I got the energy. It was almost 67 degrees here yesterday and I had lunch outside in the sun. Thinking about The Man's seasonal affect disorder post, I think I got a good dose of sun and it gave me a boost. I've been training quite a bit since the beginning of the year and have felt pretty blah about it. This give me some hope that once I can get out in some level of warmer weather, things should take off.
