Ran a 10k in June (4 Viewers)

Pigskin: Thanks for the help, no I got my masters last year and left Platteville. Over an hour away from there now. What you coming up to the area for?
I grew up there, and much of my family is still there. I'm thinking about doing RAGBRAI, and would plan the trip around it.
One of my best friends is doing that. Let me know if you do, and I'll put you guys in touch.
Awesome! If we go, we'll have a team of approximately 10 that he can certainly join. Our goal will be to maintain a pace that allows us maximum time to :banned: during the ride, and at the end of each day. We are thinking a rolling pace of 15 mph, while consuming beverages from the start to the end of each leg.
So the liquor in your name isn't by accident...haha

Don't really have any end goals. Just want to get consistent with my runs. I have a 5K in May that I think I have a legit shot to win(best time last year was 20:20) and would like to get my time down into the 18's. But just want to start logging miles and improving stamina/speed/consistency.Thanks for your help
Run a 19:22 just to drive gruecd crazy. :P I also run 2-3 miles before a 5K, which includes some accelerations. Last year a small running group from my university was doing a downtown Chicago 5K, and a number of the group were challenged just to run the full 5K. It freaked them out when I disappeared for a couple mile warm-up!

If I'm not too sore from tomorrow's 20-miler and I end up racing on Saturady morning, he'll have to run a little faster than that!

Anyone here kayak? I made a Jell-O shot fueled commitment Saturday Night to do a Triathlon in July that substitutes the swim with a 2.1 mile kayak on Lake St. Clair. Looking at last years results, my average performance in sprint tris bests everyone in my AG. So, if I were to borrow one, with zero practice, would I be miserable and basically suck for 2.1 miles, or is lake kayaking a relatively simple thing to pick up? I am leaning towards buying one. My community has a private lakefront park with a rack that provides rental space, cheap. I do not want to spend a ton, but wonder if there certain things I need to look for (material, length, etc)? It would be used on lakes only and for recreation as much as training. I doubt I'd fish off the thing, but who knows. One of the motivating factors in buying one, is that I've hear there is a group out of the park that does a kayak a few times a month where they head out to a sand bar and set up a grill, etc. D I C K ' S Sporting Goods has been sending me a bunch of stuff lately, as I use their rewards program, so I may look there first (gotta pick up some baseball spikes for my son, so I'll be there anyway). TIA for any info!

Decent week so far, getting is a 2,000 yd swim Monday, 16 mile ride yesterday and a 2,500 yd swim yesterday. Found something odd with yesterday's swim. Very much by accident, I was really fast (for me). For the last month, I've made Mondays my speed swim day and Wednesdays my endurance day. While I didn't directly time the swim, I am an OCD creature of habit and almost always get in the pool at almost the exact same time (and yesterday was no different). I will do a few different things on endurance days, but they are usually done in either 2 or 3 sets and total 2,500 yards. Yesterday, I did a mile (72 lengths) and then wrapped with an additional 28 lengths for the 2,500. When I got out, I looked at the clock and noticed I was out 5 to 6 minutes earlier than usual. I felt fast doing the swim and I think I have an idea where I got the energy. It was almost 67 degrees here yesterday and I had lunch outside in the sun. Thinking about The Man's seasonal affect disorder post, I think I got a good dose of sun and it gave me a boost. I've been training quite a bit since the beginning of the year and have felt pretty blah about it. This give me some hope that once I can get out in some level of warmer weather, things should take off.

Really nice workouts 2Y! Awesome to have a fast swim. I'm dreading my first few swim workouts of the year, which will likely be next month. I've done some kayaking, but not enough to assist with actual advice. I can tell you that with just a little practice you will be able to move pretty easily in it, especially in a Lake kayak. DO IT!

Anyone here kayak? I made a Jell-O shot fueled commitment...
Other than sorrority girls, who the hell does Jell-O shots??
Why wouldn't you do Jell-O shots?? Pure yummy. Grue: Hopefully we get to see a real 5k time from you. I'm guessing we will, but with your 20 on the docket you certainly have a built in excuse. Though it wouldn't be FBG-like.

For those that haven't done yoga before,

...as a spectator sport. Squats are also quite beneficial.

I've done two of these. Unfortunately the kayak is all about technology. At one event I was digging on every stroke absolutely busting it and some 50 yo female passed me like I was standing still. It looked like she was waiving a wand. If you want to win, I'd look to borrow or rent a higher end kayak. It's like the bike on steriods where you get to the point that double the effort nets like 5%-10% more speed. Certain kayaks are only going to plane so well. ****'s has sea kayaks, some people will show up with cigar kayaks that will likely go 2x faster at the same effort. You'll be able to pick it up with one outing. With your swimming background your arms/back are in shape for this.

I think the race company doing the event is offering rentals. I'll try and figure out the type they are renting for the event. While this might have to be another fun event, it'd #### me off to have the best bike and run splits in the AG and get smoked on the kayak split. Thanks!

Hi folks, I haven't checked in here in quite a while based on a couple of reasons. My bad back and hip have been an ongoing concern since I ran Savannah in November. Ended up getting a cortisone shot a month ago and it's helped me at least get back to 20 miles per week but its still not 100%.

More importantly: My mom developed ovarian cancer this fall and died a few weeks ago.

I always said that I would NEVER run Boston unless I could qualify (still about 10 minutes off) but I'm seriously thinking about trying to run Boston in 2013 to raise money for Ovarian Cancer research in my mom's honor.

Does anyone have any advice on how to go about getting that started?

Really sorry to hear that Workhorse. If you get this setup, please PM me.

For the cyclists in here. I just downloaded it, and can't wait to play with it.
Who needs this? I just stay in my 56-11 gear the whole time.
Don't we all? But now you know that if you stay at the 5.09 gear ratio, you will be traveling at 35.9 MPH at 90 RPM's, and 39.8 MPH at 100 RPM's. :nerd:

Hi Workhorse. So sorry to hear about your Mom. T&P's to you and your family. I'm pretty sure many in here will help you raise $$ to run. What a great cause, and motivator. I got back into running after a few years of slacking once my Mom died (1994). I still try to race for her memory, and raise money whenever I can for the American Heart Society. Losing your Mom sucks. Wishing you and your family some peace.

My condolences, Workhorse. Let me look into the charity thing for you. I know Dana-Farber is a big one.ETA: Here's a list of the 2012 Boston Marathon Charities. Probably gonna be a while before the 2013 list is released.

Workhorse-Sorry to hear about your mom. I am sure you will be able to get a FBG boost in donations if you can get things set up.

Good luck to those racing this weekend.

-------------

Nothing huge going on for me. 5 recovery yesterday and then 11 GA miles today during lunch. Probably going to try and squeeze my long run of 15 miles tomorrow as we have my son's 4 year old b-day party tomorrow night. Would be nice to get a few :banned: in and not have to worry about it on Sunday.

Had a my first bit of race paranoia last night as I was looking at my Pfitz book and thought I was a week off in my schedule. Talk about raising your heart rate. After looking at it again, I am right on schedule, but my wife was watching me and laughing at how crazy I am.

Have a great weekend all.

JBMy plan is for a recovery run today and then an all out Sand 5K tomorrow. I will report backMy best time since I started running again in January has been just at 23:00 or so. Ran 3.2 miles in 23:28
So this didnt work so swell for me. I started off strong and did my first mile in 6:50 but then I crashed after that. I might have been able to push a bit harder in my last half mile then I did but I finished 3.1 in 23:40. I guess I just prefer to run my first mile slow and get my legs under me

Weather tomorrow morning.

40 the start...51ish by time I finish.

Looks like a throw away long sleeve to start kind of day for me.

Was hoping for 45ish to start...will see how it really is in the morning and if the wind is down.

Not to say Im not happy with my 6:50 mile. I havent run that fast since HS (15 years ago)
Just curious if you did any kind of warm up before hand. Sounds like if you did a couple of slow miles or a few strides before hand your legs would warm up and feel better for the start. Just my .02.-----------------Got out and did my 11 miles for today. I am feeling pretty good about things. The first half of what I ran today was all hills (800 - 900 ft elevation) and after that my legs still feel really good and I was cruising between 7:40 and 8:30 per mile depending on the terrain. I cross a few bridges during the latter half which seem to slow me down a bit, butoverall, I am happy with it.

I did not. Not a bad idea. Maybe Ill try it again next week. I did one slow lap around the track to calibrate my foot pod

Thanks...annoyed at the planners of this thing.Packet pickup does not start til 3pm...so I have to drag both kids down there to pick it up and then deal with people leaving downtown on a Friday afternoon.Would have been much easier to do about noon...no traffic and only one child to take with (my 2nd grader is out of school today).

That's about as perfect as you can get in terms of temps. Good luck!

I guess.I prefer about 50ish to 55. Perfect short sleeve or tank weather for the race IMO.If its closer to 38-40 to start its a bit cool to me...but by the end too hot to want long sleeves the whole time. Its right in that in beteween range for me.My first half was perfect.About 45-50 when we were lining up at the start. Had an old jacket on to toss at the start and went with sleeveless shirt.Though, warmed up more than I wanted closer to 60.55 is that prime spot for me that I love. This one might get to that by the finish.

Go get'em!!! I have added trying not to puke to my goals for Sunday's 5K as it looks like we'll be out late the night before and lose an hour in the morning. Things may be near 60 which should make the :stalker: & :pics: all the better.

Best wishes to the weekend racers!!!

2Young - regarding kayaks, two of my sibs bought them recently and I have used them at our summer cottage. Size matters. One is longer and narrower and much easier to cut through the water. The other is a bit more boxy and it doesn't hold the line as well. In choppy race waters, you'll want a good kayak, I'd say.

Workhorse - sorry to hear about your mom. I lost mine a year ago this month. Gruecd sent the link on fundraising for Boston ...not sure of their $$ threshold, but maybe that will work.

---

Great morning for me despite a 30 degree temp and a sharp, cold NW wind. pmb got me psyched to push hard on the short intervals, so after a warm-up I hit the track. It was cold, but the sun was rising strong and I had the track entirely to myself. I think this was the first time I did 4 sets of my (2 x 400m, 2 x 200m) workout. Pacing was around :89/90 and :42/43 ranges. They all felt good and smooth.

Workhorse-sorry to hear about your Mom. I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

Good luck to the racer's this weekend.

I have been pretty sedate here. We have had about 3 days of high winds that I am not going to run in. I hate wind. Air is brown with dust :X : 40 mph gusts

I have been playing PS3 MLB 12 The Show. :pickle: :bag:

Monster Jam Truck rally tomorrow with my youngest and I hope to run Sat or Sunday depending on wind.

Very happy camper right now.

1:54:18 unofficial...

Its an interesting race, I certainly would not recommend it for anyone wanting to see a great part of Nashville or anything exciting.

Starts at the Titans stadium and heads out to Shelby Park and the greenway. its a pretty boring run.

But, I would recommend it for anyone close by that wants a PR. Its extremely flat.

Weather today was pretty darn good. I went with LS but could have easily gone SS. Sunny, no wind.

After coming out of the gate with an 8:35 mile...I settled in to the miles around 8:41-8:45ish. Just cruised there for about 7 miles. Felt great.

At that point decided to pick it up a bit and started in on some miles around 8:35 or so...til the last mile I pulled in an 8:27 and then the last .23 was quite a bit quicker coming down the ramp into LP field and around on the grass. Nice looking up and seeing yourself on the jumbotron as you come up on the finish line to be greated by a Titans' cheerleader with the medal.

Overall...a great race day and Im very excited about...but not sure I will run this one for a little while til I want to improve a PR pretty big.

Nice job. Under the 1:55 mark has to feel good. That is a pr for you isn't it?

I went out for a slow 2.5 this morning. First run since NOLA, I'm definitely still fatigued.

1:54:17 official chip time.

So only a second difference between it and my Garmin.

One interesting thing...its an out and back course...as the faster runners are coming back towards me, there is a little boy (though, I think several of us thought it was a girl...very long hair but looking at the times no way it was a 13 year old girl...) 9 year old. Guy behind me says "that's discouraging". We all had a laugh...

Passed the kid at about mile 11. Sad that in my head I give myself a fist pump for that. But I did give the kid 5 and tell him he was awesome...(just not as awesome as me...give him 28 more years on his body and see how he does :) )

My splits went

1 - 8:34.99

2 - 8:41.25

3 - 8:46.37

4 - 8:42.71

5 - 8:42.63

6 - 8:44.93

7 - 8:41.91

8 - 8:35.63

9 - 8:37.12

10- 8:39.47

11- 8:35.50

12- 8:34.9

13- 8:27.59

.23-1:53.44

Geez...unless you have the super duper military gps, you may have run the same pace for most of the race. That's amazing. Congrats on the pr and a very solid time.

Yeah...my plan was to keep the average pace under 8:45 on my watch as long as I could...then open up later.

Worked out well on that one.
