Knee, ankle and achilles.

I'd give Glucosamine & Chondroitin a try for 90 days or so and see if it helps. I am a huge believer in this plus Fish Oil in helping ease my over all achy and creakiness.

My knees creak and my ankles always crack.

But like you never had pain with them.
I believe that's just cartilage wearing away, causing more friction.prosopis - so sorry to hear about the car damage, though I'm glad your son is OK. Hopefully you can get things repaired.

Whoa momma... I am in a groove. Had a fantastic 18mi trail run today. I had so much fun I was tempted to keep going and just make it a 20, but decided I better stay cool and not burn myself out. It was such an awesome experience being out there on the trails in the dense fog. It was eerily quiet. I truly love the trails. There was a hiking club of some sort getting geared up as I was starting out. We just so happened to finish back at the parking lot at the same time and caught a comment from one of the hikers. "Did you just run that whole time?" Yeahhhh buddy. :excited:

I feel like I'm making some big strides this month. Can't be any happier given how funky the winter has been. Decided to compare the last few trail runs to get a sense of how things have changed. I love what I'm seeing. Today's run was so fricken' hilly. To see the HR so much lower and on a longer and hillier run is motivating as hell.

02/26 - 13 mi with 911ft climbing @ 11:01/157

03/04 - 16 mi with 993ft climbing @ 10:48/156

03/18 - 18 mi with 1,542ft climbing @ 10:53/149

Ended the week with 50mi on the nose. Time for some ribs and :banned: for my wife's bday dinner tonight.

Nice job, Ned. Sounds great.

Nice job Ned. We don't have much as far as trail running around here, it's a bummer.

Anyone here recommend a training schedule/program for a half? I'm about 8 weeks out and without a set schedule I've felt myself slacking a little bit.

I'm leaning towards the advanced higdon plan. It looks like it has a little bit of everything. Usually 6 runs per week that include 3 easy runs, intervals/or hills, tempo and a long run.

Any other suggestions?

Higdon's schedules work well. Just keep the easy runs easy ...cut one out or crosstrain if you don't want to do 6 days/week.

Ryan Hall's plan from Runners WorldI used that with a few modifications here and there.

But thought it worked well getting in speed, tempo, long runs, and MLRs.

Back from the Twin Cities and my craptastic race yesterday. Like I posted on FB, heat + hills + humidity + (lack of) hydration = crash & burn. The race started at 8 AM, and by 9 AM it was already 62° with 86% humidity. My body just isn't ready for that in mid-March. And apparently the race officials weren't ready for that, either, because there were only two water stations on the out-and-back course, so you got water at about 2.5, 5, 8, and 10.5. Not enough, IMHO, for when it's that warm and humid. In fairness, though, it's my fault, too; if I would've looked at that ahead of time, I would've carried Gatorade.

Anyway, I (stupidly) didn't adjust my race strategy and held PR pace (6:30-6:35) for only a few miles before I realized that it wasn't going to be my day. Really started slowing down on the long uphill stretch going into mile 5, and hit the turnound at 44:05. Went into "just finish" mode, walked both water stations on the way back to get some fluids, and ended up positive splitting by 4-1/2 minutes, finishing with a time of 1:32:42, which was a solid six minutes slower than I'd hoped to run.

Anyway, had a blast afterwards celebrating St. Patty's Day with my sister, and this week it's nose back to the grindstone with one more big week before starting my 3-week taper for Boston. I'll hopefully be up over 60 miles this week, including 10-, 12-, and 20-mile runs and hopefully a long tempo effort.

Hope you all had a great weekend!

I don't think I've ever read that coming from you. Still running a 1:32 after all that? Pretty kick ### in my book.

Thanks, dude. Lotsa #### going on in my personal life right now, too, so my head isn't exactly in the right place, either. Still, I think the lack of adequate hydration and the stupid pacing strategy (considering the weather) were the biggest factors.

The last half marathon I ran, I just did the first mesocycle of Pfitz's 18/55 and ran almost a two minute PR. Granted, that PR was a little soft to begin with, but still. I'm going to do sort of the same thing for my half in May.

I don't think any of us would be ready for these kinds of race-day temps in March. In a typical year, you'd be much more worried about snow on race day than excessive heat/humidity.

Both of these work pretty well to keep up the joints, but I have not been able to get the cracks to go away. My son asked me a couple of weeks ago what was cracking when I went up and down the stairs. Here is the conversation:Son: What is that sound.

Me: My knees and ankles crack because I run so much and I am getting older.

Son: Woah! You are not sneaking up on anyone.

At least it was not "You are so old dad!"

So my Race Report for the Cincinnati Heart Mini-Marathon on Sunday.

First this is a great race for raising money for Heart awareness and health. There was over 18K runners for all the events of the day and they will probably top 2 mil in fundraising efforts.

It was hot yesterday. It was 65 at 6AM, which was 1:45 before the race even started. The good news was that it was a great day to be a spectator of sports bras, and there was just enough of a cool breeze and many of the women were smuggling tic-tacs in them. I did not know much about the race going in and had heard they added extra water stops, but I took a hand-held anyway just to be sure. I am not sure it helped me too much, but was nice to take a drink when I needed it. As it turns out, the stops were more frequent, but sometimes sporadic in location.

So my brother and I got down there to pick up our packets and warm up a little bit before hand. I did not warm up much at all, as I spent all Saturday walking around the zoo and did not want to have my legs more spent than they were already.

We go to the start and get ready. Nothing big, but at the start, I guess they fired a cannon and I swear I would have loaded my shorts had I not previously done so. It was so loud. Everyone kind of looked around before they started running.

Of course, I Sanded the first mile at 7:12 and then tried to even things out a bit. Here are my splits over all.

1 7:12

2 7:22

3 7:18

4 7:25

5 7:28

6 7:57

7 7:30

8 7:32

9 7:54

10 8:01

11 7:44

12 8:04

13 7:49

14 :23

So the course was filled with rollers and one or two pretty good sized hills. I wanted to try and stay right around 7:45 for the whole thing to see if I could do it. I went out faster than I wanted to, but I have a hard time not doing that and my legs wanted to go those first couple of miles. I did not stay as even as I wanted to, but considering I was on dead legs and with the heat, I am happy over all. I am really starting to think that 7:45 for the marathon is doable. Maybe by the end I fall back and do 8's, but I am good with that. 3:30 or under is the goal. Hopefully it is going to cool down some or that may change.

ETA: Forgot to mention final time was 1:39:47. Places 176th of all half runners and 26/137 for age group.

Have a great day all.

Yeah...my PR before now was pretty soft too...so a PR by almost 6 minutes looks great, but in reality, that former PR was from my 2nd half on a hilly course and this last one was very flat.Though, my prepartation was so much better for this last one.

Nice race pm...

And also disappointing...but still a kicka## effort grue.

On my end, ended up going out for a 15 mile ride yesterday just to do something. The only time I could get out was at 2pm during the heat of the day (about 80ish) so I did not want to run. Almost wish I would have run though. I forgot how much biking the hills around here takes out of me and how much different it is than running.

Quads were burning.

Still felt good to get out there...my allergies don't agree though.

Going to get in some mile repeats on the treadmill later when my daughter naps or later tonight.

Time to get back in gear for a 5k on the 31st and then the Country Music Half at the end of April.

Finished my first full marathon yesterday. Fell a bit short of my 3:30 goal but I'm pretty proud of finishing in 3:35. Great feeling of accomplishment today...and pain...oh man, these stairs are my enemy today.

Congrats. Regarding the pain, check it out:

At least you don't have the embarrassment of losing to a 15 seed like the Duke fans do. Now if only something would happen to Kentucky and those fans can shut up as well.

Thanks fellas. Grue, I'm definitely feeling that video!

I need to find me a half marathon now. I'm ready to smash my PR. :boxing:

It is what it is. Good to see you blowing it off and moving on. First run of the year in a big temperature pop is always a losing proposition. A couple of years ago I ended up sitting in a creek and walking home. Being in the middle of a build phase, you probably shouldn't have a pr in your at your advanced stage. Keep your eye on the big prize and crush it this week.

It's definitely been something I've struggled with mentally. Just gotta check the ego at the door. 2Y2BB's comment about 75-90 slower (trails vs road) has helped me a lot. When I compare runs, it's spot on. A 149 effort is around a 9:20 (road) for me right now. Given the extra hills I'm doing on these trails, its not surprising to be on the slower end of things.

Took it relatively easy this weekend. Saturady I broke out the bike for two 7.5 mile intervals along the river (flat). 24.3 mph average out, 22.9 mph average back. I'm way off of where I need to be. Those should have been zone 4 hr efforts, but once I hit zone 3 the legs said no more. I haven't dumped the data to get the wattage, but I'm sure it would be sad. I think I was averaging close to 25 mph over this entire route when in shape.

3.25 recovery trail run yesterday.

I like the trails, but can't stand being so much slower Nice improvements going on.
I'm easily 2+ min slower.

Great stuff in here, as always.

Ned - you are getting in such great shape. I'm really looking forward to that day when it all comes together and crush the marathon like you deserve.

Prosopis - so sorry to hear about the car. And yet so thankful to think your boy's o.k. when it could have been so much worse.

Jb1020- I think the most important thing is just to have a plan, any plan, and stick to it. Higdon is great, but don't burn yourself out trying to cram the 8 weeks between now and the race.

Grue - sorry about the HM, but look at it as a training run. Besides, you had a great weekend anyway!

PMB - nice job on the Half! Race stalking will be greatly appreciated when pics are up.

Hang 10 - Great job on that Marathon. So impressive!

My training remains a sporadic bag of half-mixed crap. Struggled through 4 in the heat on Saturday and was dismayed to realize that it's now hard for me to run 4 miles at the pace I ran 26 miles back in November. But instead of focusing on the negative, I went back out yesterday and focused on HR and keeping it easy - ended up with 12 miles at 8:46 and a 148 HR.

Cherry Blossom 10-miler is now less than two weeks away. I think I'm going to shoot for a 7:30 pace - had planned to shoot for 7:00 back when I signed up, which was before taking two months basically off. Oh well. Last year I took almost 5 months off, then returned to run the Baltimore 10-miler in mid-June at exactly 8:30 pace. So I'm still way ahead of where I was after last year's Winter Vacation. I'm now targeting that race (again in mid-June) for a 7:00 pace this time around.

Also, the Cherry Blossom will be my wife's first 10-miler. She did 8 yesterday, which was a new PR for her.

Prosopsis: Sorry to hear about your son. Glad he's ok, but I'm sure it's added a new level of stress to you. Run the stress out.

Sand: Awesome that you are getting your bike legs back

Ned: Fantastic 18 miler. My biggest regret from my running career is that I didn't find trail running sooner.

pmb and Grue: way to tough out crappy weather and get your 1/2's done. Faster races are in your futures.

Hang10: AWESOME first marathon!!

I had Spring Break all last week, and was able to get at least one workout in every day. I'm through week 4 of P90x, and just started phase II last night. I'm a bit peeved looking at the schedule for this phase as I don't see ANY leg/lunges work on the docket. I might sneak phase I's legs/back into the midweek workouts as I really need it. My legs right now are pretty much toast as my last three days looked like this:

Friday: 60 minutes on the elliptical followed immediately with legs/back P90x (I wanted to create tired legs).

Saturday: 47 mile ride in 15 MPH winds. With the tired legs I still managed 20.1 MPH, but had to work my ### off to get it.

Sunday: First ride on my Tri-bike of the year. Winds were 15 MPH+ and I planned on taking it easy. First 4 miles were down wind, and the speed felt too good. I also only planned on doing 14 miles (as a recovery ride), but that plan also got thrown out the window as I was high on speed. Through mile 11, 9 miles were at 2:30 or faster. I was averaging 22.6 through mile 14, with the last three miles dead straight into the wind that was picking up (now 20+). I didn't have my HR strap on, but I'm pretty sure I was redlining coming in. I ended up averaging 22.1 MPH = my first 22+ MPH ride of the year (it is no coincidence that it was also my first tri-bike ride). I rested for a couple hours before doing P90x chest, shoulders and triceps. I sprained my wrist mt. biking over the break, so I've got a flipping brace on which makes these workouts pretty rough. Fun, fun, fun!

Legs are toast, so I'm obviously going to go and do a hard 8 miles on the elliptical right now. I'll get Ab Ripper in tonight.

Anyway, I (stupidly) didn't adjust my race strategy and held PR pace (6:30-6:35) for only a few miles before I realized that it wasn't going to be my day.
Just to say - a HRM would have clued you in quickly to that! But ..you know that already.pmb - excellent job on the HM. That's a solid performance given the other priorities that have taken your time (and deprived you of sleep) lately.Hang10 - Awesome!!!! :headbang: :pickle:  :pickle: :headbang:

Glad to see you getting back in the groove and big  to the Mrs.AGREED!!!!

You're an animal!!
Not an animal, but I'm hoping to be one by the middle of this summer. :boxing: I just found a different P90x schedule that has Leg's and Back in it = I'll be following that one!

Ran 18 miles yesterday in 40mph crosswinds at the beach. Sandblasted for almost 3hrs. Just did 7mi today. Supposed to do 12 tomorrow.

Tough week, plan for an alltime high 54 miles. Next week I'm on business travel so I'm going to dial it down to about 40mi.
