Did a workout of 3 separate 6 minute miles with a 5 minute break in between. It was killer.
I think I'm really weird when it comes to temps. Everybody says 45°-55° is ideal distance running weather, but I hate it. 60° is pretty much the minimum temp I like to run in. Don't mind anything up to 85°. I don't think I'm some superhuman in heat - I'm sure I run slower, but it doesn't bother me. Overcast and cool bothers me. I love sun. My ideal run would be 65°, no clouds, and a light wind. I think it's because I grew up walking 18 holes all summer in Arizona.86% humidity though? OK, #### that.'gruecd said:The race started at 8 AM, and by 9 AM it was already 62° with 86% humidity.

I don't think I've ever read that coming from you.'gruecd said:Went into "just finish" mode, walked both water stations on the way back to get some fluids, and ended up positive splitting by 4-1/2 minutes, finishing with a time of 1:32:42, which was a solid six minutes slower than I'd hoped to run.Still running a 1:32 after all that? Pretty kick ### in my book.
Grues craptastic race is a dream race for me. It is all relative. I think it is pretty impressive to do what he did in those conditions. 3:35 for your first marathon is way cool. Nice job.Whoa!Did a workout of 3 separate 6 minute miles with a 5 minute break in between. It was killer.
Whoa, Nellie!!Just as a self-serving note: today was awesome. 5 mile run at lunch; first run since my HM two weeks ago (yes, I am being a slug). Felt great in 82 degree weather with 8:15s. Felt good finishing up. This evening a strong 2000yd swim. Finished the swim up with 10x100 with a :10 rest interval in between each 100. Averaged 1:20 for each in the drag suit (total time for the 1000 with rests was 14:50). Not bad at all, not bad at all.
My buddy said I needed to do a hard workout like this to get better in my 5K's. The next workout is 1 mile warmup/ 8X400 at 80 seconds or less/ 1 mile cool down.Does all of this sound right?Whoa!Did a workout of 3 separate 6 minute miles with a 5 minute break in between. It was killer.

I've been doing the odd race here and there since 08 (mostly just 5-10k's) but I didn't really start training for races until last year. I signed up for my second half marathon ever (at this same shamrock event in VB)last year and started running with my wife's good friend's boy friend. Guy is a serious weekend warrior type runner...runs 50k's etc...has done half's in the 1:30 range. Anyways, he really got me to step up my training...or really just have a plan. Started running for at least an hour every saturday rain or shine...hangover or whatever. So, when the shamrock half marathon came around, I easily hit my goal of 8 min miles...Finished in like 1:44(My buddy finished in 1:32). But after that, I was hooked. Signed up for 2 more halfs last year and got faster each race. In between, did a few 5 and 8k's and actually started to post better times than my friend...placing in my age group etc. Now it's like...if it's not time to do a marathon now, when?? So at the same shamrock event where it all started, I signed up for the full.
I stayed in half marathon shape since last year, so when I started training I planned just doing a distance series to get me there and that would be enough. Luckily a friend at the gym turned me on to that "First Marathon Training" program (LINK) and I think that made all the difference come race day. I started the training about half way through the schedule but it was enough. Didn't miss a workout...didn't slack...gave my best effort every run. I trained with a goal of 3:30 but didn't know how realistic that was. I was told by many that I shouldn't put a number on a finish time for my first marathon but hey, I don't get up early on a saturday morning to run 18 miles to just "finish". Without a real time to aim for, I don't think my training would have been as effective.
Fast forward to race day, I was ready as I was ever going to be. Nervous as hell though. I felt like my heart was beating out of my chest on that first mile...I was telling myself to calm down. Finally got into a grove and was pushing between running between 7:45 and 7:55...I worried that this was a bit fast but was just going to hope for the best and the wind was at our backs. The turn back north around the 8 mile mark was straight back into the wind...slowed my pace about 10 to 15 seconds. Around this point...I was thinking WTH have I gotten myself into...WHY am I running this far?? Doubt really starts to set in when you're about the 12 mile mark and you realize...I'M NOT EVEN HALF WAY. But you just keep going. At the half way point I was at 1:44 (the same as my half time last year...crazy) but the head wind and fatigue was starting taking it's toll. I finally settled into a 8:15 to 8:30 pace for the remainder of the race. At around mile 19, I left my friend and didn't see him until the beer tent...I felt strong. Fast forward to mile 21 and I'm starting to get the weirdest shooting pains in my quads. This is starting to scare me...is it cramping? Is my leg going to totally lock up with 8k left?? I was alternating drinking water and gatorade at every stop...was doing the energy gels...what didn't I do?? But still, I just kept going and started to pray...God don't let my body fail me NOW. At around mile 23 I was talking to another runner about cramping and he offered me two packs of salt...man, I hope it worked because it pretty much sucked to start dumping salt in my mouth so far from a water stop. Still going, it's truly the point where your mind is battling your body...just keep going. Just keep going. If I had any strengthen left, I would have strangled the next person that called out how many miles I had left. You telling me I have 3 miles left after I've just done 23 is NOT HELPING. Finally, the goal is in sight...I'm going to make it. Man, what a feeling. Amazing. But then you stop and my legs tightened up like SOB. Posing for pictures...trying to force a smile...then walking to the beer tent like frankenstein. But I wouldn't change any of it. My wife was a real trooper...following me much of the way on her bike. What a great day. I'm still on cloud 9.

Be careful about the long rests ...better to sacrifice a bit of speed in order to control the rest periods. For the 400m repeats, you'll want to keep the rest to 60-90 seconds. So - pace yourself. :80 per 400m would be great, if you can do so with short rests. I do my 400m repeats at about :90, and I'm targeting a 5K below 20:30. I target my mile repeats at about my 5K pace.My buddy said I needed to do a hard workout like this to get better in my 5K's. Nothing at all wrong with these. As far as the panic attacks always remember if in need to you can flip over on your back. Just having that in your head usually alleviates the issue knowing you can always get air if needed. Other than that HTFU on the longer sets. They will pay off. Those short, fast 50s will also pay off well. Get a good bit of rest between each. Get going hard while trying to hold good, smooth form. If you can get some good work in on these you'll see some good improvements. They're great muscle trainers.1 x 250yd - 4:29, new pr and it included not one, but two mini-panic attacks. Or the lady at the 20 mile mark, "You're almost there!!!!!!" I start each new 400m on the 2 1/2 minute mark ...maybe that was the intent. That's a quick turnaround (60 second rest), but that's a key part of the benefit. That makes sense...he wanted my rests to be at 2.5 minutes. I'm guessing he wants me to do more speed work instead![]()
I'm not the running expert, but I think the general wisdom is to increase volume a bit more before hitting up a lot of speed work. Tri-man or Gru are more knowledgeable, though.Hey Sand, i'm just getting into running consistently again. I'm probably only at 15-20 miles per week.
Yes - nice report. Thanks, Hang 10!I agree about the spectator comments. As the Bourbon Chase guys saw, I lean more toward the zen-like comments to help runners focus, remember their training, and concentrate on technique. Well, except for the time when I (a Michigan guy) was cheering on my BIL (a Michigan State fan) in his first marathon a couple of years ago. As he came along a paved trail at about mile 19, I was standing in the middle of it in an MSU Spartans sweatshirt that I'd secreted out of his house and was yelling lines from the movie 300 ("Spartans never surrender ...Spartans never retreat" ..."Spartan, what is your profession?"). Fun times!Great Race Report Hang_10. Feel the same way about the end of race spectators. I like "You're looking great!" No way have I just run 20+ miles and think that I even remotely look close to "great". Others results may vary, but not mine.

Funny all the emotions that one goes through in a marathon. That's a huge chunk of improvement. You realize what type of number that would translate to in a half?Keep those recvoery runs in check and you'll see the benefits on race day as well as your hard workouts.Yesterday was a silky smooth 6mi recovery run. I could still feel some stiffness from the Sunday's hilly 18, but it didn't seem to affect much other than not being 100% comfortable. Inspired by the HR discussion with BnB, I'm making a big effort to keep these runs as they're intended. Looow HR. 10:01/135We are turning into a running family and I'm loving it. Wednesdays are normally busy for the whole family. Add in my wife now in full blown training mode for our marathon relay, I needed to get up early this morning to get my 11 mi with 7LT in so she could run later today. 58 degrees for temp and dew point at 5am on 3/21? WTF is this? It was so foggy it might as well been raining. That didn't matter as I just completely crushed that run. That was the single best LT run I've ever run. I cannot believe the transformation that's happening right now. The 7LT miles ended up at 7:44/173.5 average. I felt so good at the end, I just let the 7th mile go and disregarded HR as I wanted to embrace this run. These don't happen that often so I wanted to make the best of it. Finishing the 7th mile at the same pace as the 1st? Priceless. I know I paced this right when my HR was back down into the 140s by the time I hit the 10mi mark (1st cooldown mile) and I was just chillin'. Y'all know I love to compare back to see the progress. at fractional HRs. I didn't use the custom workout on the watch today (just used the quick workout). So I had to crunch the LT splits in excel.
That's still smoking BnB. I have three more weeks of base mileage to complete before I start working on speed, and would love to get my initial intervals at that speed, especially for 7.5 (I typically do 5 mile repeats as my long intervals). It's all relative (i.e., like Grue talking about his half, or Sand talking about any distance in the water).Took it relatively easy this weekend. Saturady I broke out the bike for two 7.5 mile intervals along the river (flat). 24.3 mph average out, 22.9 mph average back. I'm way off of where I need to be. Those should have been zone 4 hr efforts, but once I hit zone 3 the legs said no more. I haven't dumped the data to get the wattage, but I'm sure it would be sad. I think I was averaging close to 25 mph over this entire route when in shape.
3.25 recovery trail run yesterday.
