Ran a 10k in June (3 Viewers)

Pigskin I am glad to see you are doing a race with your daughters. Is your body ok for that? I know when it comes to our kids we dont much care what our bodies are ok for. We just want to be examples and spend time with the kids. Have fun.I am still waiting for car parts to arrive. Hoping I can put my van back together on Friday.
Prosopsis: Best of luck with your car. I know these things are a pain in the ###, but it could have been much worse. Regarding my body, I'll likely be pretty darn sore, though we will be going darn slow. I attempted to run .6 miles with my girls last weekend, and it was not pretty. Both had to stop at least four times and complained about being thirsty, tired, hot, achy, hungry, etc. I on the other hand so wanted to just run, as it has been waaaaaaay too long. I can't wait to see how much they'll complain over 5k  . LOL at Grue's comment as I was thinking the same thing. It would have been a much better story if it was a stalker, instead of a stocker. JB: it will get better. As the saying goes, it never always gets worse. pmb: Heat sucks, but does make us stronger. We've now officially transformed from complaining about the cold, to the heat. For 2012, it took until 3/22.______________________My update:Had a good 70 minute elliptical workout yesterday, followed by Ab Ripper. Today will be a 20 mile ride followed by legs and back (my favorite P90x workout!). Tri-man: it is lunges on top of lunges with pull-ups mixed in :boxing:

Hell, even the warmup has lunges. It has Tri written all over it.Too funny about the girls. Enjoy it!!

I might have to transition myself into a "night runner."

We just moved our 2 year old to a bed. He did great for a week....he's been up before 4am every day this week banging on our bedroom door. :wall:

This gets better huh?
When my son was still living at home (college summers, or first year after college), I'd sometimes come downstairs early on the weekend to get started on a long workout ...and the newspaper would already be inside the house. It gets delivered around 4 a.m., which of course means that my son brought it in when he got home from his night out. :P Be careful what you wish for! It gets better ...it gets worse. It's all good! Enjoy each moment.liquors - to paraphrase Jim Gafigan: If you do pre-lunges before your lunges, you go into a time warp continuum. I'd go back to a time when I was doing more lunges.

Got in my first run since my marathon sunday and felt pretty good. Didn't try to push it but ran 5 miles at a 7:24 pace.

I'm not really sure where to go from here. I think I need to sign up for another race soon...I'm worried if I don't set another goal soon that my training will be aimless. Post-marathon hangover if you will. :sadbanana:

BTW - 7:24 is cookin' for your first run back!

Quick drive by. Been incredibly busy at work, but keeping up here from the phone. Great racing all over the place last weekend!!! I have to find the link to the race calendar to take off my race for this weekend. I'd kind of forgotten my daughter and her ensemble qualified for states at districts and their state performance is right at gun time for the race on Saturday. :bag:

Nah, I'm not depressed at all. My body feels great and I'm still pretty happy about how well the marathon went. It's just that I don't have any races coming up on the horizon to train for...I was searching for something/anything coming up in the next month or two but it seems like slim pickens around here. Without a race goal, I'm just not sure how to train anymore...if that makes sense.

I know what you mean. If I don't have these races planned out I'd be on the sofa eating dorritos and oreos. There's gotta be some shorter races around. No interest in seeing what you got on the speed end? You'd be surprised what that new found endurance will do for your shorter races.

Hang 10 - do you have any goals for fall? Any big races to target? Are you looking mid-distance (HM) or shorter stuff (5K)? It sometimes helps to look out a couple of years, based on when you change an age bracket (a nicer concept when you're old like me and the brackets thin out quickly!). You have a tremendous base, now, following the marathon. Find a way to put that to good use!

I've got a few goals for summer/fall.

5k under 19

10k under 40

half marathon 1:30 or below

There's always a few 5k's a month but haven't picked one out yet...we'll see I guess.

Hang 10: Git your butt signed up for something already!

2Young: Good luck to Little Bald!

My update:

I did a brutal 18 mile bike ride last night in 20+ MPH winds. The last 5 miles were right back into the wind, and at times it felt like I was working my ### off, but the bike was moving backwards. The first 13 miles were MUCH more fun. I passed (on the left) two trucks during the ride. One at mile 4 and the other at mile 7. Both were going approx. 25 MPH and with the wind at my back, that was too slow. It was a great adrenaline rush flying by them and looking at the drivers' faces. I redlined on the second one (HR hit 188), as I flew by them, and kept up the pace for another 1.5 miles to stay ahead of them. I ended up averaging just 20.2 MPH, which was hindered as I got stuck behind a bus at mile 11 which had two stops that I had to wait behind (Garmin shut off both times, but the stopping/starting killed that mile).

After my ride I fed my daughters and did P90x Legs and Back with Dreya and Sophia. My legs feel tired in the most awesome way today. I'm going to take a SDO today to get ready for my race this weekend. I just looked at the logistics of the race, and found out they aren't offering a full century this year. Thus, I'll be racing 75 miles this Sunday.

I likely need to study the map for this one, as last time I did this race I was leading the pack at mile 4, and was literally flying. After a pretty long pull I looked back to see how many people I was pulling, only to realize I had missed a turn, and there was NOBODY behind me :bag: . I ended up never being able to catch the leaders and got stuck doing most of the race solo.

Speed night yesterday...

5 x 1/2 mile intervals

7:09 pace; hr 145 avg / 156 finish

1:41 walk; hr 118 low

7:06 pace; hr 148 / 162

2:23 walk; hr 116

7:04 pace; hr 149 / 163

2:23 walk; hr 118

7:10 pace; hr 152 / 166

2:34 walk; hr 123

6:54 pace; hr 155 / 169

Happy with the speed consistancy, not happy with the hr inconsistancy and errosion. It's quite the reality check to realize that if I ran a marathon with Gru that I could hang with him for a 1/2 mile before he'd put an hour plus into me.

250 yd swim at 4:40. Did this after lifting which was a mistake. On the plus side, knocked out 225 for 6 reps on the bench.

Went out for a run thinking I would do about 6 miles...did tempo the other day and was not sure what my real plan was for this run.

65*...77% humidity made it brutal...but after a nice easy mile, decided to mix it up and throw in some fartlek work over the next 3 miles...then cooled down with 2 easy miles.

12 on tap for tomorrow or Sunday depending on the weather in the morning and if I get out of bed in time to get the run in before my son's soccer game.

PSL - good luck this weekend.

--------

Ran 5 recovery miles yesterday.

RAn 8 hilly miles today. Last half mile was in a complete downpour so I consider that a fartlek for that as I was busting it trying to beat the really heavy stuff. Did not happen as I was about 3 blocks away when it hit.

Probably take a rest day tomorrow as we have a ton of stuff to get done then 18 or 22 on Sunday. Will decide after I go out what I am going to do.

Have a great weekend all.

Go kick some ###, GB!! :excited: ___________

This weather is just crazy. I knew it was warm out when I left for an 11mi MLR for lunch today, but GD it's hot. Thank god I was smart enough to bring my fuel belt along (I usually don't this time of year). I of course had a harder time than usual keeping the HR at bay and started to unravel some around mile 9. All in all though, pretty solid run considering it's 87 degrees out there. 9:38/151

Yuck - 70 degrees with rain and sticky humidity made some mile repeats less than fun. I ended up doing just three: 6:41, 6:31, 6:36. My first interval always is a little slow and the legs get stretched out. But I had hoped to push these at or below 6:30 since I hope to race in nine days at a 6:35/mile pace. But ..trust the training.

Man you are crushing this training. That's a great workout in crummy conditions. Aren't those splits already faster than any of your 5K times from last year? Doing that in the middle of training and in those conditions is fantastic if you ask me.

Yuppp, looking good, tri-man!My training, on the other hand, has sucked ###. Busy dealing with a lot of personal- and work-related ####, so my motivation for running has really been lacking. Even missed a couple of runs this week, which doesn't happen. Planning on a Boston-simulation 20-miler tomorrow with hills from 12-16, or about 60-80% of the way through, just like Boston. Going out tonight with some friends, so we'll see how it goes tomorrow....

Race week has been quite

3miles on WED and today will be 2miles for a tune up for Sunday's 10k

I'm rested but have been working on porch at home stripping paint and sanding so I have some soreness I normally wouldn't have.

Been 75+ all week, race time looks to be 50 and some rain, I will take it.

Trying to drink more water, and after this I have my mind set on the NJ half Marathon May 6th.

Pretty cool, end of January I set my goal for this year at a 10k, and here I am on the weekend of my 10k 2 months later, with Ned getting me a schedule for HM before the mid point of the year.

GL to all the racers this weekend...

Got in 13 in some humidity today. Was going to do 12 but lost track of things while out and looked down and realized I was at 11.5 miles and almost 2 miles from my house. So just went 13 and walked the last little bit to the house after that.

Race To Read 5k Race Report

My second all time race (ran a 5k last year about this same time) and it went pretty well. I was a little worried because my running has been interrupted for the last 3 weeks or so while helping folks around here clean up from the tornadoes. (Ironic side note - we took a group of students to an IMAX on "Tornado Alley" yesterday, then had to spend about 30 minutes in the basement of the theater for a tornado warning!)

Anyway, my goal was to break 30 minutes. My strategy coming in was to "Sand" the first part of the race (I believe that's the appropriate term) which for me would mean running about 8:45 - 9 min/mile and see how long I could hold on for. I ran a mile and a half at that pace Thursday and felt like I could have went a little further, so I figured I could knock out the first couple of miles in about 18 and then if i had a total meltdown and had to walk for a little while on the last mile I could still get to the finish line well under 30.

Took about a minute to throw that strategy out the window. The course was much hillier than I anticipated, and it started about 100 yards in with a steep one. I'm beginning to realize that every course in the state of Kentucky is going to be hilly! Add to that how bad my legs felt and how little energy I had (staying up late watching UK last night didn't help), I decided just to cruise at about 9:45-10:00 and see if I had anything left at the end.

After that first big hill, the rest of the first mile was a long, slightly downhill stretch and I finished it in about 9:35. It was uphill from there to the turn and I was struggling a bit (along with everybody else around me), but I settled in behind some very nice scenery and that really helped on the second half of the race. Crossed the second mile marker in a little over 19 minutes, which left me right on pace to break 30, but that downhill stretch on the first mile was now an uphill stretch on mile 3. I seriously thought I was going to have to walk, but ego and the view in front of me kept me going. We got to the top of the hill and kicked it in on the downhill stretch to the finish line, passing quite a few people on the way. I could have passed her too in the last tenth or so, but I figured that would be disrespectful after all the motivation I had received, so I coasted into the finish line in 29:30.

Overall I was pleased, especially after how crappy I felt at the beginning. I think I can definitely take some time off of that next race, which should be in a couple of weeks.

Thanks, Ned and gruecd. Ned, you're right. The splits are better than my 6:37/mile or so pace from the end of last season. Rest and race conditions both help as well. The race next Sunday is one of Chicago's most competitive with separate races for men and women. At best, I'll be in the top quarter of the men's race (about 400 runners). The good news is that means I'll have a lot of runners around to pace on or shadow behind. Today I did a hard, steady 5 miler - 7:07/mile, and a 170 (!) HR. Prince Myshkin - good race! Way to keep pushing it and, ah, following the motivational view.

Does anyone use hammer gel in a flask? I recently tried hammer instead of Gu and absolutely loved the raspberry flavor. It's a little thinner than Gu so you can put it in a flask instead of the individual packets. Theres a few different flasks out there so I was wondering if anyone had a favorite.

Yep, I have a flask for the bike and LOVE Hammer Gels. The Apple Cinnamon and the Montana Huckleberry are my two favorites. If you go to Hammer's website, they have a deal if you by all the flavors in a single pack. The Tropical is a bit nasty and so is the Banana, but the others are awesome.

Really good run today to cap off an otherwise crappy training week. Ran my 20-mile "mini Boston" course with a buddy of mine, handled the hills with no real problems, and ended up averaging 7:48/mile. Last mile was 7:08, and we were running down around 6:00 pace when we finished.

Taper time.

10k in the morning. Based on my time from last year I'm in the second corral behind only the seeded runner. That's great news for a race with 20,000+ runners. I'm in the first 1500 so I'm hoping not to have to contend with any strollers or power walkers at the start.

What should I eat for dinner? Does it matter at this distance?

What should I eat for dinner? Does it matter at this distance?
Not really. I'd do something simple like a grilled chicken breast and some rice or pasta.
Interesting. So far, I've gone with Sierra Nevada, string cheese and Doritos. That's almost the same thing, right?
:lmao:For a 10K, it really doesn't matter. That said, your chosen diet is pushing things a bit.Go get 'em tomorrow.

I want to thank all the regulars (and non regulars) in this thread for making this easier for me. Like I said before, I dont always chime in but am always reading.

Quick breakdown of my run/race yesterday (I forgot to put it down on calendar since I wasnt sure when it would be)

On New Years day, my BIL said he was doing a weight loss competition with his buddies from college. Being severely overweight, I asked if he thought I could get in. He talks to the powers that be and Im in. So on January 3rd we get weighed in and I am 209. At barely 5'6 this probably puts me into an obese category. Anyway, my first month I decide to do Insanity. Knowing I didnt like the second month, I decided to get back into running. Stopped immediately after the 2007 NYC marathon. With the help from all you guys in here, I started learning about the science of running and it improved my efficiency tremendously. Like most fat guys, I started slow but really started to enjoy it and started getting faster. So here was my final tallys from yesterdays finale that included sit ups and push ups in a minute as well as a 5K

Push Ups- 90

Sit Ups- 51

Weight loss- 30 pounds

5K- 22:46 ETA: Avg HR- 175, Max- 192

My goal for my 5K next week was to be in the 22nd minute on the watch. It looks like I may be able to do it. The course yesterday was flat and next week I know there are some inclines.

1st mile- 8:01

2nd mile- 7:26

3rd mile- 6:53

last .1- :24

In my heat, I came in second to my BIL by 10 seconds. He is 6'2 so Ill account for his longer strides (its my short person rationalization). I won the weight loss and as of yesterday, did the most push ups.

Thanks again guys. Im hoping I have the same type of effort on Saturday for my next 5K.

Woke up with my foot hurting again this morning.

Not sure what is up...it loosens up as the day goes on but is still a little sore now.

It was like this after the half...but fine for other runs the last 2 weeks, and now sore again the day after a 13 miler.

Have a normal checkup with my doctor tomorrow as it is...so will ask him more about it. Just a bit frustrating.

Nothing at all wrong with a 22:xx. Great run. You need to speed up that first mile, though. You bleeding huge amounts of time by not going out harder. By the time you speed up you aren't able to empty the tank and certainly left a lot out there.Oh, and the "long stride" rationalization doesn't work. The fastest guys out there tend to be small. Most importantly, they tend to be light. Lose another 10 lbs. and you crush him.

AcerFC - dang, we may have to promote you from Acer to Racer! You put down some serious speed at the end of that trial 5K!!! Keep it up! Congrats to you on many fronts. :hifive:

52:20 today. Have to figure out a way to throw up some race stalking pics. The problem is that the noticeably hot chicks were already past me by the time I noticed them. Need numbers on the front and back just for these purposes.

Just a quick update on my race. I majorly Sanded it! Ended up having to do virtually the whole ride solo. They had more than 1,000 riders more than expected (likely due to perfect conditions) which created a cluster at registration. I got my packet at :20 til the advertised start time after waiting more than :25 to get my packet. The line was twice as long as when I got there when I left to get my bike and go to the start time. I kept riding toward the start and couldnt find it only to learn the decided to let people start as they arrived to the starting line. I thought oh crap and decded I wanted to catch those bastards.

I'll give full details later, but I was averaging 24 mph through the first 10 miles without finding anybody's wheel to assist. I never got even close to the leaders as I learned they started :30 ahead of me. Did virtually the rest all by myself and was ecstatic to average 21.0 MPH for the 75 mile course.

First off congrats on the weight loss! That's awesome! Second - Sand is spot on. Go out in a 7:20ish pace and you'll run a much better race. Add in the race atmosphere and you'll probably crush that 22:46.

I finished my Arizona Desert Classic 1/2

I went in planning on just doing a training long run. I have had a rough few months training poorly due to illness and blah excuse blah blah. A long training run for me is my Garmin set at 11:00-12:00 avg pace.

Last year I had just under a 10:00 avg pace for this half. I got there and decided to reset my Garmin for 9:30-10:30 pace. I was hoping I could match last year. This is a pretty hilly course with 538 feet elevation gain. It is an out and back course.

For the first eight miles I was lined up for a sub 10:00 avg pace but I was hurting. Miles 9-13.1 involved some walking and I just could not keep my pace up. The course had great scenery :pics: It was pretty warm out and the girls were dressed for it. The desert wildflowers were also in bloom as were the citrus trees. The citrus trees give off a very sweet smell and I liked it. Very Forest Gumpish. :bag:

At the turn around 6.6 I took a goo they were handing out. It was vanilla and I almost puked it was so vile. Took me a good mile to lose the nausea. I plowed on and met my original goal of a long training run. My Garmin has avg pace 11:02. I did pick it up at the very end at an attempt to look good. Garmin says I had an 8:06 pace going at the end. :excited: I got what I expected (11:02 pace) but the way I got there was unexpected. They announced over 2,000 runners with every state represented as well as 4 country's. It was fun, I will do it again next year.

HR was 163

Finished off a 54 mile week with a great weekend of running. Yesterday was a super easy 6mi recovery run. HR getting lower and lower with each run. 9:53/132.

Today was a fantastic 20 mile trail run. It was perfect temps, but dreary and drizzling most of the time. I expected a lot more mud since it was raining off/on all weekend but traction was great. The focus stayed on hitting every hill I could find. Ended up having a great run averaging 11:00/149. Nearly identical to last weeks 18 miler except it was a smidge hillier at 1,624 feet of climbing. All of these hills are kicking my ###.

I try to remind myself of where I've come from to keep perspective. I didn't conquer these 20 milers until my fifth try last year. Doing it on a hilly trail run today and finishing strong gave me chills at the end. I cannot wait to hit this triple. :excited:

Good job finishing prosopis. I know you've had a heck of a winter, so don't sweat the times. Finishing 13.1 with very little training is something to be proud of.

Hopefully this will be a good building block for a solid spring/summer.

On a side note I did manage to repair my van. It took about 9 hours but I got the new radiator, air conditioner compressor, fans, egr valve, water pump and changed the oil pan gasket. I now have to bring it in for an alignment and to get the air conditioner charged. So far everything works but I wont know about the air conditioner until I get it charged.
