Ran a 10k in June (2 Viewers)

Wanted to share this as it was pretty cool. There was a Kid's mile race right before the 5k/10k and two tiny little girls beat everyone (all boys all girls) with 386 kids racing. The course was VERY hilly for a single mile and was certainly a net uphill. I just looked at the results and they must be sisters (same last name) and they ran:

11 year old: 6:22

9 year old: 6:30

The third and fourth place runners were boys aged 11, and 12 and ran 6:33 and 6:41.

It was great to have my daughters see the girls kick some ###!

Grue's 20k = 9:41. Hopefully he's just being smart and not pushing it (while race stalking).

20K 11:45:56AM 01:44:33 30:04 09:41 6.20
Hang in there Gru!
At some point you just say #### it right?
Well, with a point-to-point race, that's hard to do logistically. However, public transportation is free for the runners today. I suspect a LOT will drop out around mile 16. That's in Newton (just before the start of the hills), and the route passes over the train line back to the city. I remember catching the train after exploring that section of the course last year before going to Sunday's expo. It will be a tremendous mental challenge for runners to push beyond that point, knowing it's another ten miles ...with the hills.Beyond that, the racer's mentality is to carry on and endure. That's a nice badge of courage once it's done ...but it's the total sux getting through it.

Just sounds awful out there with those temps.

Got my easy intervals in this morning.

6 X 800m @ just under 10k pace.

6 miles total running.

Less than 2 weeks from my next half before taking the summer off of anything longer than maybe a 10k race wise.

My friend Luke who was ready to break 2:40 in decent conditions has fallen off....and is pacing to run a 2:47 after 30K. To me, its incredible that he's on that type of pace and I'm sure it will be north of 2:50 when he finishes.

The positive is that he hopefully won't push it too hard (in a dangerous fashion) in order to hit some arbitrary time.

Luke's holding pretty good - 7:15 pace through the first sequence of hills.gruecd (and my friend from church) have both slid into 10 minute miles. They're almost running side by side. Ned, I absolutely agree ...this would have been a day to run solely by HR.

Be smart guys :sadbanana:

BTW, gotta put in a big  for universal sports coverage. Complete ####. Video lagged and pretty much locked up toward the end of the race. They obviously couldn't handle the traffic.

Something must be ####ed up between the 25 and 30k mats. Some of the guys I'm following are all jacked up.
Hard to believe that. SC's friend, Luke, slipped a bit in pace for that 5K. My friend, Greg, as well as gruecd rebounded a bit. I suspect that after making the turn by the Newton fire station and starting the hill sequence, the guys felt like they were into the "home stretch" with definable features (the four hill sequence along miles 16-20) ..to the extent ten miles is a "home stretch." Instead of the mental drift that likely occurred through the 25K point, the guys now can apply some focus to their miles ...put a bit of attack back into their pacing.

My friend Luke finished in 2:54:38. Glad he is finished and presumably okay. I'm guessing he learned a bit about the power of heat/humidity on distance running. I'm proud of his effort even though I know he is probably incredibly disappointed at his time.

I know that I will never run a 2:54 marathon even if it was perfect conditions....and all down hill.....on a skateboard....with a motor.

I sure hope he will come to appreciate how insanely good that is in these conditions. Congrats to Luke!

He finished #305 in the Boston Marathon!!! Congrats to him. He ran quite a steady race, given the extreme conditions.

I hope so....I'll chat with him tonight or tomorrow and I'll report back. To put it in perspective, last year he finished 340th (and running 2:44:49) and this year he finished 320th (time of 2:54:38). His PR overall is 2:42 at Philadelphia.

305 amongst the men. 15 women beat him so he's 320 overall. I agree.....incredible race. I just texted him (knowing he won't see it immediately). Just telling him how proud I was of his effort and performance. Its tough on him because he spent much of his last semester in college training (as opposed to out drinking and doing stupid things you do in college) for this day...to break 2:40. He'll realize in time what he accomplished today.

It's true and across the board. You have to add the Half time to the 25k split to get that 5k split. My teamate who is 63 is holding trying to stay below 4 hrs. Typically he's a 3:35 to 3:45 type of guy.

Even more impressive considering he's from NY. The guys from the south should be crushing the placings this year.

Looks like Grue has slipped a bit doing the last 5K in 11:44/pace. Must be brutal conditions out there as he is one tough mo-fo.

Hope he is hydrating.

iStalking gru at Boston is sort of annual tradition now. It's like the 10K Thread equivalent of St. Patricks Day.

Hope things are going okay for him, and he's just chatting it up on the course with some hottie.

That's what I've been hoping. They're just run/walking and having a grand ol' time.

I'm sure he's pissed and I don't blame him. That's alot of coin and time investment for a recovery run. Hopefully he'll bounce back better mentally than I would from a crappy "A" due to things beyond your control. This would be like flatting out in a bike race when you're in the lead pack.

5,000 people took the deferment to next year. I wonder if they're going to expand the field for 2013, or just fill the first 5,000 spots with those people and make it that much tougher to get in next year.

Glad I'm focused on gunning for Boston 2014.

I've got a buddy running that's showing up with empty details. Does that mean he deferred?

They said on the broadcast that runners choosing to take the deferral should grab their packets as usual, but not cross the starting line. All DNS's would be considered a deferral.grue should've crossed the 40K mark by now, but isn't showing up on the site.

With the current time standards next year wasn't going to fill. Things should be ok for the 2013ers actually getting to go.

04:16:21 finish time with no 40K mat crossing for Gru.
Maybe he diverted to a nearby bar for a quick pick-me-up or chased some skirt up the sidewalk and missed the mat.Tough, tough day for any kind of a run!17seconds, we might not get much of a story. Our guy crashed last year in his first (as I recall) sub-3:00 attempt, and we got about five words on it. Hopefully he'll give us the gory details, though. A teachable moment, as they say, about dealing with physical and mental challenges.

This is my first, its been enjoyable.
This will not be his last. I'd guess that multiple FBG's will be running Boston in future years. On a different note; Grue's go to line for picking up the ladies is "Are you a runner?" (great philosophy behind it as if they aren't a runner, they are flattered, if they are a runner, he has something to talk with them about). I'm guessing that might not be as effective while he's running today.

That's GOLD!

Must've been that piggyback ride he got from one of the hotties.
He actually ran it in 3:16 - with an hour hanging out with the Wellesley girls...
Doubt it, not up to FGB standards.
Absolutely. Especially using the Offdee scale.
Maybe they look better with 12 miles under your belt. Like a runners-high equivalent of beer goggles.

Plus they're already screaming your name.

Those girls are put there to make you run faster.

Just thought I'd let you guys know I'm totally fine. Brutally hot out there. I've never seen so much carnage on a race course.

Ended up walking the majority of the second half. Seriously contemplated jumping on the train at mile 17 like tri-man said, but decided to gut it out. Just hope I didn't jeopardize my chances of recovering fully for GB. Other than that, it's all good.

Oh, and Wellesley girls PR was achieved. And the "runner" pickup line always works. Foolproof.
