The Inaugural Flora Half-Marathon RR
Overall 1:53:03 HR AVG 168 – I know Ned, I know.
Garmin Info
I wasn’t nearly as prepared for this one as I had hoped to be, training wise, but I felt pretty good. One thing that threw me off was the course. This was a new event and the people that put it on did a great job, but it could have been a little bit better. There was no map or elevation chart so I decided to go drive it and take my garmin.
After getting my garmin plugged in it said there was a total of 188 ft of elevation. I looked back at my last Hm and saw it was a total of 700 or so…so I figured no big deal. Turns out it was nearly 600 ft, freaking felt like it too. Anyone know whats up with that?
I knew there was a big hill at mile 5-6 so I decided to take it easy the first half, then put the hammer down at the half way point.
Splits as follows…
Mile 1: 8:36 HR 148
Mile 2: 8:34 HR 154
Mile 3: 8:42 HR 157
Mile 4: 8:21 HR 161
Mile 5: 8:26 HR 165
Mile 6: 8:53 HR 168 – 129 ft of elevation gain here.
Downhill Started, I decided to stop being conservative.
Mile 7: 8:04 HR 173
Mile 8: 8:04 HR 172 - I was feeling great at this point.
This is where knowing the course is so important, I would have completely changed my strategy with a little homework. Mile 9 thru the finish was a steady (but slight) uphill. When I drove this thing I just looked and thought, “oh, they’re just rolling hills.” I honestly couldn’t tell the first half was practically downhill and the second half uphill.
Mile 9 : 8:22 HR 174
Mile 10: 8:40 HR 175
Mile 11: 8:32 HR 177 – hurting like hell at this point. No shade on this course either.
Mile 12: 8:53 HR 175
Mile 13: 9:23 HR 176
Mile .16: 7:27 HR 183 – this was the first time I had been passed since the begging of the race, I had to try and beat that guy, but he got me.
Still set a PR by over 5 minutes so I was happy, but I was a little pissed off because I thought I could have run a smarter race. You live and learn I guess.
I had that strange feeling where you think you can go faster, but your legs just won't allow it.
The only real gripe I had about the race was after you made the turn the mile markers were way off, like by half a mile. So, Say I’d hit the 9 mile marker on my garmin, by the time I hit the actual road sign I’d be at like 9.6. When I realized this I actually got pretty frustrated, cause I assumed the course was not measured properly. I was thinking to myself, “#### I might can get my pace down to about 8:20 and not be in the 1:40’s, so whats the point?” ####ty attitude I know, but the thought did cross my mind. But of course they evened out, it was just a mental thing.
I had also planned on being asleep well before 10, but got sucked into a college baseball game that ran long. I didn’t even get to bed until 11, then my son woke up at 1. Crummy night sleep all around.
