Ran a 10k in June (5 Viewers)

I finally got an HRM and a GPS Watch thing (MOTOACTV). So, can anyone point me to a link with good info on starting Heart Rate Training? I am currently in the midst of training for San Jose Rock & Roll, but after that I want to train for the Hollywood HM by doing Heart Rate. Any link(s) or advice would be great.

I searched the thread, but you guys talk about Heart Rate a lot, and I am hoping for a few outside web pages to get me started.
I'll bet Ned might be able to find a site or two about this.
 Some quick googling will get ya there to start. There's a ton of varying opinions, so don't get too overwhelmed. I'd completely skip any site that's suggesting you can obtain your max HR from using any sort of calculation. That's the #1 falacy with HR training. We've all got the same parts, but they all work at their own pace. Don't get wrapped up in comparing your HR to anyone else's.

Pfitz has a good summary of the ranges, although they are a tad high. There was recently some good discussion in this thread on the zones here and here.

If you want to seriously go at it, I'd suggest reading this book. It can get a little too sciency, but does a good job of explaining the concepts.

Step 1 - go out and get your max HR figured out. Whether that's doing one of the many max HR tests available on the web or simply racing a 5K at max effort (think puking at the end).

Good choice on the MOTOACTV. I bought one a few months ago love it.

Now to rest up before the Tap n Run Beer 4k tomorrow. This Hogan muscle costume + cape and maybe a top hat is going to be freaking hotter than crap by 5 tomorrow night when this thing starts. Oh, and tall red socks with the bottoms cut out pulled over my shoes to look like wrestling boots.

Though, Im going to have a few in me, so who cares?
Pics or this didn't happen
Few changes...no top hat...just could not find one today. But a red bandana with fake blonde hair out the back.Awesome cape with "THUNDERLIPS" in silver iron on letters...and even some fringe on top of it.

The socks...not sure Im pulling them over the shoes yet to look like boots...its almost impossible to pull them over the shoes, but I may try.

Here is a pic of the cape, bandana/hair, and mustache.

Just a preview there meatball.

Of course today...the one Saturday I don't get up to run...it was expected to be about 65/59 this morning.

Even now at 8:30 its 68/59.

About 10-15 degrees cooler and 10 deg less dew point than I have been running in.

Though, good that it will be a bit cooler tonight for this run.

Today was the day, got the distance done so now I can quit right? 13.12 (for good measure)miles, 2:21:03, 10:45 pace, average HR 153.

Not sure what it was when I started but it didn't feel any different when I finished so I'll assume suck factor remained constant at 146 (72/74). Was hoping it might be a bit cooler with the rains we've been having but good enough, been running in this all summer. I had thought about this run a lot this week and kind of planned it out in my head so I was going to go out fast and just do what I could for as long as I could. Around mile 6 I started to get tired and hit some hills I'm not used to so my pace started to shoot up but around mile 11 either the GU I had eaten kicked in or some other source gave me a boost of energy to finish up strong. Essentially the run is downhill to the midpoint and then up all the way home so it does test you. I felt like I was beat up by the end but happy to finish it up. Never dreamed of running this far in January, thanks to al the support/advice you guys have provided along the way. It's made a world of difference

Taking a week off, just planning to hit the weights and do some elliptical work and then decide where to go from there.

Nope. It doesn't count unless it's an official race with your time and name on the Internet for all to see. And getting a cool shirt. ;)

Seriously, though, congrats!

Congrats on the distance, that is a big milestone. I would suggest not taking a week off though. Do some easy runs but dont take a week off. It is amazing what can be lost in a week.

I did a rough 9 miles this am. I had to many beers last night and went to bed late. I did not set the alarm so I started quite a bit later then usual. The sun was already up when I got out there and that is not a good thing here.

Temp was 96 with 27 humidity. :yucky:

I did my 9 miles with avg pace 10:25, avg HR 160

I was freaking soaked. There was a pretty good monsoon storm going on which changed my course. I managed to avoid the storm by running which was sort of fun. When I got home my daughter asks how long I was running in the rain. I told her I did not run in the rain and I was soaked with sweat. I then tried to hug her but she was to fast and escaped.

That 10:25 avg pace is an improvement of over 10 seconds on previous long runs. I am getting faster.

beer, crazy gruecd, prosopis - nice distance, guys. I'll add mine as I push some mileage this week:

M - 6 miles, moderate tempo

T - 7 miles w/8 x qtr mile long striders (one step per sidewalk square)

W - 8 miles easy

Th- 5 miles, all short hill repeats

F - rest

S - 15 miles, 8:22/mile, 145 HR

Nicely coolish (low 60s) this a.m. Like beer ( ), I'll add some miles tomorrow to run on tired legs. I hope to do 9 miles and finish the week at 50 miles.

Gents, more detail later. 1/50 in age group this morning.
Sweet.
Sand pounded 'em!!! :pickle: :pickle: :pickle:
Had to delete my original post replying WTG SAND!!! :headbang: My ETA made a mess of the reply with all kinds of code. Here is the ETA:ETA, HFS, won the AG by almost three minutes (although, swam no where near the predicted 8 minutes for the swim - guess the race company was right :P ). Just wanted to prove I've been lurking, just too busy to post.

Hall has dropped out? Did I hear that correctly?

EDIT: Yup. I heard it correctly. Must be such a disappointment.

Yeah. His hamstring had been slightly injured and he had been working through it in his training. He was hoping to just grind it out. It started to tighten up during the race. He felt it was starting to impact his stride and it wasn't getting any better and he was worried about further injury.

He said he was kinda in shock as he had never DNF'ed before.

Meb finished fourth. He was 16th at one point. Nice strong finish.

Three guys were together at mile 23. Two Kenyans and a Ugandan. The guy from Uganda made a move and left the Kenyans in the dust. Fun race to watch.

Now I'll go do a long run that will be half as long distance wise and half the pace of what those guys ran.

Great race. I love the smile on the Ugandan's face. I am glad I got up at 3:00 am to watch it. I am off to church now.

Week 4 of Pfitz 18/70 in the books.

Tue - 9mi GA. Already posted. Killer run. 8:32/149

Wed - 14mi MLR. Yeesh man. The Wednesday MLRs are long. 71/71 and dense fog made it dangerous on the roads. 9:33/143

Thu - 5mi recovery. Hot and sunny - 81/74. I felt like ####. Legs were dead and I have a cold. I should've walked to keep the HR down, but I just wanted to get the run over with. 10:26/141

Fri - 11mi MLR. Still muggy (75/74), but felt a lot better today. HR was actually drifting down towards the end. 9:31/141 :snotrockets:

Sat - 5mi recovery. 78/71 and sunny. Legs were sluggish (I'm seeing a trend on these recovery runs). 10:25/137 Spent the rest of the day lugging more sand, pavers, and top soil for the patio. I fell asleep sitting up on the sofa at 8:30. Is this what it feels like to get old, tri?

Sun - 18mi LR. Cold front moved through during the run. I could feel the humidity dropping (71/67 at 5AM start). My lower back and hammies were barking at me when I got out of bed. Did my best to keep this run as light as possible. Fought through the soreness the whole way, but wasn't too bad. Overall a decent run. 9:43/144

----------

62mi total for the week. A new weekly PR by far.

Great time yesterday...few pre-run beers and an ill-timed shot.

Then we were off...the hulk costume was quite warm but definitely got a lot of attention from people wanting to take pictures with me and all.

I think we finished the 4k in around 26 minutes...I have not even checked my time. Just took it as a nice slow jog.

Gave you a little shot of beer at the start and 3 more times on the course, then another cup at the finish.

Great week man...freaking awesome.I have not looked back at my mileage this week...probably around 35...sort of a step back week with some things popping up and cutting one run short this week and having this run last night.

Back at it for the full week 4 this week for me.

 Beautiful morning. 65 at start - incredibly odd for Alabama in August. Did 550yds in the pool there as a warmup and felt pretty crappy - been having issues with shortness of breath. The lake for the swim was awful - murky, dirty, and weeds all over. Regardless I wanted to take the swim at a reasonable tempo pace. The swim ended up way long - ~750yds instead of 600. This is to my advantage, obviously. I put in the only time in my AG under 10 minutes and was in the top 2% of all swimmers. This is a time trial start, so things are usually pretty sedate out there - except today. Never had so much contact. People were running into me constantly and I had to fight to get around just about every buoy. Inadvertently groped a couple people (hope they were female). Despite all that I fell into a very good rhythm and felt pretty good the whole way. Never did get passed. Despite being long the swim seemed to go by very quickly. All in all an excellent swim.I had good a transition - headed out on the bike. Held good power for the first ten miles and then just pooped out. Not sure why - very disappointing. That said, I think I was in the 3rd percentile of bikers. My time was :20 slower than last year, though there was more of a headwind on the long backstretch and times were somewhat slower overall here. Held 237w, 24.2mph, and was 1/50 in AG. Really wanted 25mph - maybe next year.Another good transition and headed out feeling pretty good on the run. Had to stop for :10 to stretch out a crampy calf. Other than that the weather made this this nicest 5k I have run. Finished :15 seconds faster than last year - all due to weather. I think I was at 22:35 or so. Right on 7:30 miles. Considering I haven't been breaking 8:30 in any of the hot runs I have been doing this summer this was a pretty nice result. As always my relative placement here among other results sucks, but evidently good enough to hold on to the decent swim and bike results. As far as placement, I was a bit fortunate in that two guys in my AG got promoted to the overall Master's category. Got some good swag for winning - a gift certificate a beach towel. Most importantly I beat all my training partners (one of them by :03 :boxing: ). Need to work on running (obviously) and on putting out good power on the bike while in aero for long distances (which I don't do except in races). Other than that it was a beautiful morning and a great race.

What was the deal with the dude in last place walking? I mean, his best run is a 2:16, and he's walking at 2:40?!? WTF? I understand hitting the wall, but this is the Olympics we're talking about here. At least jog for chrissakes.

Afterwards I did a 7-miler at a suck index of 140 -- 95/45. Am going to do 35 miles on the back in a couple of hours. Suck index oughta be over 150 by then.

Huge  to Keflezighi.

Ryan Hall :sadbanana: did the US overtrain for this? That's two first time DNFs for the men/women.

I've been real busy, but lurking. Lots and lots of good stuff going on here!!! I am gearing up for one of my two biggies of the year next weekend, The Battle of Waterloo 10 leg survival triathlon. Unlike a normal tri, racers have to tuck their running gear in their tri suit and swim across the lakes (3 different ones) and then put the shoes on and run. Last year it took me just over 5 hours. I'd like to break 5 hours this year and stay healthy. I am viewing this as a loooooong training brick for a HIM I am going in September. This was a blast last year, even though I was dead last in my AG and I am looking forward to it again. It was surreal swimming the last lake 3.5 hours in and thinking what I still had left to go.

I woke up early to get 14 in before the heat came in. It was only 67 at the start, but the dew point was still 73.

Overall the goal was 10 min miles and I finished in 2:20:03. The first 12 were very easy but then my gluteus and thighs tightened up.

My PR for distance and the first time I thought " yea, I can do 26.2"
