Ran a 10k in June (2 Viewers)

MAC - Are you wearing a HRM? I'm willing to bet there were signs there... This is wear training by HR shines. :grad:
Nope, all based on feel. I don't think I run as well when I think too much.

I should check to see if my wife's new garmin has a hrm though.

I won't buy one, but if she has one I'll use it on these runs.

A little disappointed in my 5 mile tempo run time, but I ran it properly. 35 minutes, heart rate stayed stable, and the moment I got done absolutely no huffing and puffing. Stomach issues impacted my last 3 miles unfortunately, ate like #### all weekend and drank too many fluids pre run today. Since I don't watch my time anymore I don't have splits, but I'd bet I went out in 6:30-6:45 pace and finished in something closer to 7:15-7:30.

Still think this is a positive takeaway though.
That's a pretty big drop in performance if you started out at 6:30 and ended with a 7:30. Your stomach really that messed up?

Over the weekend I probably had...

15ish beers

Couple servings of cake + ice cream

Couple plates of kielbasa and kraut

1/2 pizza

1/2 bag tortilla chips w/homemade salsa + guac

Couple pancakes

Few pieces of bacon

Lost track of how many bbq pulled pork sandwiches

...so, yeah, don't think I exaggerated that one. I don't usually eat well over the weekend, but that was ridiculous.

Don't see any weekend binges like that again until Thanksgiving thankfully.

Sounds like a normal weekend for this guy!

But anyways, that does seem pretty slow compared to your typical 3 mile runs. Maybe it was the junk you ate. I think you might need to work on keeping your splits a bit more even though...even if that means slowing down. Kinda defeats the purpose of a tempo run if gas yourself before you're even half way done.

I did 8 miles in average 7:22 pace last night. And that was with the first 1.5 being close to 8 mins. It's weird - it's like my body has felt better since I got my diagnosis.

Lol, how old are you? I could do that in my early-mid 20's and bounce back Monday fine but now that I'm north of 30 the recovery period often extends to Tuesday! Oof.

Next time I do this I'm going to start in the uphill direction instead of down like I did yesterday, see how it effects performance and results.

Any chances your splits weren't as bad as you're guessing? A lot of times your perceived effort seems off but you're still running a good pace. I agree with Hang - that's a big drop that I'm surprised to see out of you.

35 but I've been working out so often this past year, that I basically give myself a cheat day every weekend. Ran 16 miles on Saturday and then spent half the day drinking gatorade and the other half drinking beer. Every Sunday is pizza day at my house, where daddy eats at least 3/4 of a large pizza...and you know, football is on, so that means more beer.

Sometimes this drags me down on Mondays but Monday sucks anyways.

If I had to ball park I would say 6:35-6:45-7:10-7:20-7:10.

I know I was at the 2 mile mark in about 13 mins and miles 3 + 4 are more uphill, stomach issues began not too long after mile 2.

I may test myself for PEDs....

9mi w/ 7x800 @ 5K today. I wasn't sure what to expect after just doing 20 on Sunday, but holy crap. I don't even know who I am any more.

Goal was to keep intervals around 5K PR pace (3:10 half miles). I wasn't sure exactly what my paces were since the motactv workout screens are a bit funky when you program the intervals.... So I went by feel. I hit a "wall" at interval 5 when most of it was on a slight uphill. Little did I know I was running way under pace for the first 4. It's stupid that my last 2, that hurt like a #####, were the only 2 to be on goal pace. Those first 4? :loco:

3:01/178

2:57/183

2:57/184

3:00/183 (slight downhill - starting to feel it)

3:16/184(slight uphill - barfff)

3:09/182

3:10/182

Avg = 3:04/182

So fired up.

THE TUESDAY OF SPEED!

Did 7.5 miles w/ 6 x 400 w/ 400 RI myself (ran around the local park so my splits are a bit uneven)

1- 1:19

2- 1:23

3- 1:27

4- 1:22

5- 1:23

6- 1:18

The_Boy had his first meet since the Half Marathon - nice day to run and he cranked out a 19:50 on his incredibly demanding home course. That's a big improvement from his previous PR on the course of 21:10, which he ran in the first meet of the season on a 90-degree day. Still went out a little fast, and got passed on the final mountainous climb, instead of passing, which is more typical, but it was a good run for him.

Finished 4th overall in the JV race, 2nd for his team, almost beat the 7th varsity kid, who ran a 19:35. The #1 guy on varsity ran his brains out and finished with a 17:00 (though some people said it was a 16:59) which smashed the old course record of 17:20. It is impossible to describe quite how tough this course is. The kid's effort was jaw-dropping - he seems to be breaking out right now and I look forward to seeing what he will do on a flatter course. I've heard sub-16:00 makes you recruitable for college cross country and I'd love him to get there.

Now the schedule gets a little soft - post-race easiness tomorrow, pre-race easiness on Thursday, big home invitational on Friday. I already convinced him he's running Saturday and Sunday, as the focus is really about the Conference meet on Nov. 6. I can't tell you how rewarding it is to be the father of a teenage kid who is psyched to do extra weekend workouts because he wants to be the best he can.

NICE!! What's the conference course like? Sounds like he may be set up nicely to get into the 18s.

Stumbled into this thread and have enjoyed reading through it. Played baseball, soccer, etc. competitively through high school but never enjoyed running. Now 34, got a bunch of co-workers who signed up to do a 1/2 marathon and I jumped on board seeing as I wanted to do at least one in my lifetime. Been following a training plan that has me running 3-4 miles 3x during week and increasing longer run on weekends (1 mile more each week). My race is November 3rd and I've done 10 miles twice but had a setback with some arch pain (friend is a dr., i got supports for shoes and it made all the difference). Should I try and squeeze in one more long run beyond 10? Was hoping to do 12 as suggested but I'm now supposed to be in the taper phase and doing 7-8 this weekend. My pace is right at 9 min/mile, as 10 miles took an hour thirty minutes each time. Suggestions for a rookie?

Sounds like the Hal Higdon training program  I would not do anything more than a 10-11 mile run this weekend. Hell, maybe just an easy 7-8. I'll defer to the experts here though

1.5 miles yesterday and another 1.5 today. Foot still bothering me quite a bit, but with the 9th closing in fast I need to get some miles in. The good news is it didnt feel any worse yesterday afterwards and felt the same in the morning. Actually feels a bit better right now than it did earlier.

Anxious to see how it feels tomorrow. I am registered for a 10k sunday that I am running with a friend I seldom see, which I really don't want to have to skip.

Swam 1600 meters tonight. Furthest I have ever swam. So at least I am not sitting on my ###.

Ned and H10 - nice fast workouts!

The_Man, great time for The_Boy. You can't go solely on times with HS Cross Country courses because they vary so much with terrain, iffy measurements, some courses are tough to run perfect tangents, etc. Your son's teammate's college recruitment will depend more on how he stacks up against competition in districts, states and perhaps beyond more than it will on time. Unless he cranks a great time on a course that college coaches are familiar with.

I'd run the 12 on Sunday. You don't really need 2 weeks to taper for a HM. One week taper should be fine.

While it's true you don't need much time to taper for a half, he's also not going to gain much by running that distance so close to the race. If his foot is still hurting, he'd probably benefit more for some rest.

Swam 1000 this morning, 5x100 in wetsuit. Totally forgot just how much faster the suit makes you. Swam at an easy effort and was roughly 10-15 seconds faster per 100y than my non-wetsuit training effort. Of course, that probably just indicates how bad my form really is.

The spun for 25 minutes, keep the legs moving.

Split decision! BoomBoom, I'd lean toward taking it easy. The extra few miles will be as much or more mental as physical ..but the race environment (and group pressure to finish the race) will keep you going through those final miles. What you could do, if you run 7-8 this weekend, is push the pace in the middle miles to get you out of your comfort zone and then finish the run when feeling worn out. You could also spend some time before the race developing your mental strategy for the race and in particular the final few miles. Study the course map well so you know what's coming (including aid stations) ...pick out some landmarks to break down those final miles into smaller segments and/or drive the course to get it in your mind. And do not let the hype of the race lead you into starting too fast!

I am way behind on following everybody's progress. Juxt, great 10. Wow. Caught a cold and have been way off training. I will just accept this as a bad week and get back on board next. Welcome Boom Boom. Give us a race report when you finish.

Although there are advantages either way, the bolded is why I'd recommend running the 12 (assuming he's truly healthy, of course). Running the 12 will improve his confidence and confidence makes a big difference in races -- might help him sleep better the night before, make him calmer at the starting line, help him push through those tough last few miles. Of course, though, it depends on BoomBoom's personality. Gaining confidence is more important to some than others.

Big, big fan of the metal side of endurance racing (and most things in general for that matter). So, BoomBoom, if you feel strong mentally and have visions of yourself finishing the 1/2 at or near whatever your goal time is, throttle back and do the 7 to 8 or so. If you are a bundle of nerves, have even a bit of self doubt, etc, do the 12 with a loud voice in the back of your head telling you to shut it down if the foot gives you issues. AND, either way, do your long run on Saturday and not Sunday to extend your taper by a day.

Juxt and I are just happy we didn't get arrested. We were walking around before the race makin' friendly with all the pretty young Asian boys. ("Hey ..... why you two ask about my penis?")

So, I originally signed up for a marathon for November 10. I'm not running that because I haven't run longer than 13.1 miles since I ran the Boston Marathon. They are also having a half marathon the same day that starts at the same time. Both races sold out within a day of registration opening. I emailed them to see if they'd let me switch to the half.

Guess their response. Did they...

A. Refuse the request

B. Grant the request and give me money back for the difference between the cost of the full and the cost of the half

C. Grant the request with no partial refund

D. Grant the request but charge me more money

Is the route pretty much the same?

If it's like Nashville, E you wear the marathon number and look like you gave up by doing the half.
