Ran a 10k in June (5 Viewers)

Thanks fellas. I write these mostly for myself (because I'm too lazy and don't have enough up consistently say to blog). I decided to wear my race vest this weekend after reading last year's report and being reminded I ran out of liquid twice between aid stations last year. But it's really nice to have others appreciate the reports.

Walked for a mile twice yesterday to try and work the soreness out, and other than walking down stairs I feel almost normal today. I'll try to get out for a hike and jog a bit if I can tomorrow.

yeah baby...

Weather for this weekend looks good and dry. It will be a high of 57-60 degrees down low and in the sun and a low in the 30s. Now with that being said. Expect the ridge to be between high 20s in the dark and wind to mid 50s in the sun with no wind mid day. This is why we have the mandatory gear. The conditions change. Keep moving and keep a safe body temp.

Don't ditch clothing mid race as you will need it when it gets dark and you are crawling at the end.

Day does not break until close to 730 am. So this means the first 2.5 hours or so will be run in the dark. Make sure your head lamp lasts for this and you have enough battery life / extra batteries for nightfall! 99% of you will be running in the dark twice. So make sure you have a lamp that goes all night and it is fully charged.
:pics:

Weather looks awesome in Chesterfield too. :)

Low of 41, high of 67 ,10% chance of rain. no rain Thursday or Friday should mean the trail is dry.

In other words, no excuses ;)

My workout yesterday - skipped a run since I was catching the first Tuesday ride of the year. Get to the ride and find that my skewer has come apart and the bolt rolled somewhere out of sight. Never did find it. So my workout for the day was to scramble around in my car for a futile 10 minutes and then drive home. :sadbanana:

I expected more ingenuity from you in this situation.

Crushed my 20 minute power test today. Started off well with the weigh-in tipping the scale at 216 lbs, down 22 lbs in the last nine weeks. Nine weeks ago I posted a 20 min power number just north of 260 watts, today it was 318 watts. Had a great rabbit it the class to chase. I had planned to ride 300 watts for the first 10 mins and then ramp up. The rabbit got out of the gait at 310 watts so I adjusted accordingly. At 10 minutes the rabbit started to fade on the watts but had a lead on our uphill course since his weight is 190. Bounced between 308 and 310 watts until the 15 min mark with a hr 7 beats over threshold. Bumped that up to 311 at the 19 min mark. The rabbit still had a 150 foot lead on me at this point. Managed to post 451 watts over the last minute to catch him and push the power number up to 318.

According to our coach, my w/kg ratio was up 35% during this 9 week period. Obviously that is influenced by porking out over the holidays and basically not riding for 6 months prior to the class. The other big difference between this year and years passed is that I focused on grinding over spinning the entire 9 weeks. I rode most of this test at 65-70 rpm.

Saw my orthopaedic surgeon today. He thinks there's a 35-40% chance that a cortison/steroid shot works so we're attempting that before surgery. Getting the shot March 24. He did tell me that surgery entails 3 weeks on crutches, 6 weeks no swimming or biking and 3 months (!!!) no running. Add up all the time between scheduling appointments and trying the shot, I may not run another step until Fall. :sadbanana:

I have been hitting the UBE machine like a boss, though. I may get so buff from it that I have to switch to swimming or body building. :bowtie:

Ugggh, agreed. Hope the cortisone shot does the trick.

What's with scheduling a cortisone shot? Why didn't he just give you one while you were there?

today it was 318 watts.
For anyone in this thread that might not know a whole lot about cycling power, this is just ridiculous.
I just hear the Peanuts teacher speaking when you guys get into cycling stuff. But from what I do know about BnB, I'll take your word for it that this is more proof that he is a badass.
I am a cyclist and the wattage stuff is still latin to me.

Best race face photo ever? Dude in front of me, I look like I'm about to die.
All my pictures look like that.

BTW, BnB, when are you heading to Dahlonega? Looks like an eventful weekend for you!
Leaving Charlotte late morning. mandatory race meeting at 7pm followed by BBQ. 5 am start. Think I will sleep in the truck to save some coin since I will be getting up at 3 am anyway.

Have a couple of friends running the Death Race with you. I suspect they will be behind you but if it works out the other way it's not a bad view if you get where I'm going with this. I could think of worse things to watch over a 60 mile trek

So no crew, no pacers? Is that ok for such a long race? I'm curious, I don't run these type things.

Also, on the random side, this happened in my neck of the woods yesterday. They've been at it for over a decade, so this shouldn't have been a surprise. They closed the area for like 3 hours and called in 14, yes 14, units to handle this.

:lmao:

Guess he doesn't do that - his colleague(s) does and they were booked. This guy is pretty well regarded Duke ortho so I figured I'd trust him. When I get the shot I will probably also step up PT to see if the combo helps...

Yeah, I just saw an ortho doctor last month about my runner's knee and he gave me the shot right then and there. Wished I had gone to see him sooner.

Good luck though. Hopefully it helps you as much my shot helped me.

Yup, no crew this time. Juice wasn't worth the squeeze so my gf is doing some other stuff this weekend. Crew access pts are at 13, 21, 28, 45, 53, and finish. That gap between 28 and 45 could be 5 to 5.5 hrs which is a lot of time to kill. If I knew I was going to finish before midnite it wouldn't be an issue and we could drive straight home. If I finish after that we have two people dead tired in the middle of no where. Just noticed we start at 5am. Ultra signup is predicting a 19 hr finish for me but the 4 people predicted to finish nearest me that did this race last year all finished between 21.5 and 24 hours. I'll take the shuttle afterwards to the start which will be taking me 1-2 hours in the right direction and catch some sleep then.

They do have drop bags so I'll load them heavy with anything I can think of.

If I do Pinhoti will you be pacing me???

Oh heck yeah. At least for 10 miles or so. (I'm a running wuss).

I'd come pace you at the Death Race, but given the stops I'd have to run like 16 miles - like from 45 to 53 and then back to my car. I could probably do one way, but no idea how I'd get back to the car. Don't think I have 16 in me, particularly considering I'm supposed to be doing a pre-ride of Cheaha, which will be 85 miles/9000' or so Saturday morning.

BTW, another cool race here: Race against the sun. See if you can complete 36 tough miles on the summer solstice from dusk to dawn. Sounds way cool.

Forecast is hovering around 30 degrees for our 5K Saturday. Not to be like a girl, but I can't make up my mind what to wear. 35 or so and I'd think I'd wear shorts, but 30 probably is a little too cold for that. Also, hat or no hat? Just a tech shirt or warmer upper body clothing? Decisions, decisions...

Koby -- Wow, that sucks. Here's hoping the shot works. (Add me to the list of people who can't figure out why he didn't just give you a shot then and there. I've never had the impression that cortisone shots were a big deal that required special scheduling. Almost sounds like a money grab, but that seems unlikely since he's a respected specialist -- they generally don't need to double-dip to pay their mortgage. Weird).

Jux -- If it were me, I would go shorts, long-sleeve tech shirt, gloves, no hat. Maybe a second tech shirt under the long sleeves. For a 5K you don't need to worry about being too cold. I would be overheating halfway through if I wore a hat or anything warmer on the upper body. That's just me though. Good luck.

Today was one of the first absolutely gorgeous spring days so far this year, and it happened to fall on a day when I was scheduled for a tempo run anyway  . When I went out it was 35, sunny, and just a light cross-wind, so I wore the same outfit I just recommended to Jux. 8/5 with the 5 at 7:35. I ran Sun-Thurs so I now have back to back SRDs with 15 on Sunday.

In addition to the $20 entry fee runners must bring a bomber of beer for the post race pancake, bacon and beer breakfast.

Shorts, calf sleeves, long sleeve tech shirt, light gloves, probably a hat (too short to really get that hot and my ears get cold easy).

Nice option but I don't want to steal Annyong's schtick.
I thought Annyongs shtick was wearing shorts that were longer than his capri pants.

Maybe I'll do that exactly.

OK, Annyong, if you want to find me: 5'11" skinny guy. Light blue long-sleeve tech shirt with Under Armour logo, black shorts, black calf guards, black hat with Mizuno logo. I'll hang out within a few rows of the start. I won't be very early since it'll be so cold.

No, he's starting out in his Gumby suit but then stripping down to his Speedo after getting warm by Sanding the first half mile.

I'm stoked. Temp at our start should be 44, by the time I end it should be close to 60. Had planned to wear a long sleeve tech shirt but now I think I'll be going short-sleeves.

Checking out the race website - damn, that's some serious vertical. Miles 6-25 look like a serious meat grinder, and that last almost 2000' climb from mile 52-60 or so is gonna be fun. And with all of that vert comes the downhills - I see trashed quads in your future.

Sounds awesome, have fun!

Walked 4 miles yesterday, mostly because it was the best way to get from home to meet my girlfriend at a sports bar to watch the Duck game without having two cars there. But it was good to move the legs, as well. Today went out to test some actual running, and got a little bit in during a 4-miler on the trails. I'm definitely still feeling the 50K in my joints and muscles, but just sore, nothing really hurts. I go in tomorrow morning for some stim/graston/chiro, that should set me straight again. Looking forward to getting back to training.

Checking out the race website - damn, that's some serious vertical. Miles 6-25 look like a serious meat grinder, and that last almost 2000' climb from mile 52-60 or so is gonna be fun. And with all of that vert comes the downhills - I see trashed quads in your future.

Sounds awesome, have fun!
If you have a FB account you'll get a kick out of this. From the page of one of the ladies running the Death Race, the fate of our lives on a note card. Made me grin, hope it doesn't rain.
