Ran a 10k in June (2 Viewers)

Good luck to BnB, Hang 10, FUBAR, Annyong, me and anyone else racing this weekend! (Who did I miss?)
You missed my pinewood derby that I'll be at instead of the Green Beer 5K!!!
i thought you were drinking wine instead?
Drinking wine tonight and then I gotta be at this pinewood event at 9AM tomorrow. I think I'll prolly need a cocktail by 10AM.

I'm signed up for the Brain Tumor 5K in Chicago on April 27 which is figuring to be my first event of the spring. I'm running this one to support a friend.

Good luck to BnB, Hang 10, FUBAR, Annyong, me and anyone else racing this weekend! (Who did I miss?)
This weekend is also Ned's archery tournament in Louisville! Shoot 'em straight and true, Ned!!!

Good luck, guys!
Same here, good luck fella's! Crush it!!!
I'm going to attempt to taste every beer at a BrewFest featuring 23 breweries tomorrow. An ultra of a different sort.

But more importantly, good luck to everyone out there racing this weekend. Run well!

So this St Paddys Day 5k goes off at 8am. How early can i start drinking? Do these types of things start serving right after the race or what? My favorite time to have a beer is after a run.

Good luck this weekend racers! I am going to spectate a local Marathon a friend's running. Was gonna try to bandit and run some of it with him but alas...he has an outside shot at BQ

Forecast is hovering around 30 degrees for our 5K Saturday. Not to be like a girl, but I can't make up my mind what to wear. 35 or so and I'd think I'd wear shorts, but 30 probably is a little too cold for that. Also, hat or no hat? Just a tech shirt or warmer upper body clothing? Decisions, decisions...
cover your extremeties, wear a hat and gloves but shorts and a tech shirt. Similar temps for my five miler tomorrow and that is what I am going with. If I get too warm I'll dump the gloves halfway, buddy of mine is volunteering. You may not have that option, but your race is also shorter.

it better! Ours has a beer stand right by the finish, first one is on the house ( included in price but who's counting, right?)

Always a little disappointed when the T-shirt isn't a tech shirt. And of all things, this one is a long sleeve navy blue shirt. I rarely wear navy blue with jeans, so the wearability of this thing is limited to khaki shorts and long sleeve days. :(

That sounds like more fun.

Depending on how I feel, I'll either make my way to Richmond for a Patty's day fest or go back to the room, soak in a tub, and write a paper. I'm betting on the :nerd:

Made the marathon in time. ;)

Met my goal of sub 4 (3:54) and surviving.

Ran all but some of the steeper hills.

Finished tied for 10th out of 129, more to follow, including my wrong turns making my total 26.6

St. Paddy's Day 5K Race Report

Should I start with the good news or bad? How about the bad.

I was shooting for sub 19:00. This was an ambitious goal. (Warning! Excuses coming!) This was the first race of the year. Training wasn't as good as I'd like due to this polar vortex crap and having to take a lot of time off due to my calves being eaten up by treadmills. I ran 6 5Ks last year:

3/16/13 19:34 (same race as this one)

5/11/13 19:33

5/19/13 19:17 (but I think this measured .05 miles short)

6/1/13 19:27

6/8/13 18:41 (PR!)

11/29/13 19:53 (fell apart)

Weather was OK. Cold, probably 30 degrees, but only a light wind that was against me the first half of the race. 1/2 mile splits:

2:58

3:12

3:12

3:11

3:08

3:09

:42 (.11 miles on Garmin)

Finished in 19:30 for a 6:17 average pace. Heart rate monitor slid off again so no HR data. Although I didn't get my goal, at least I was able to get a time comparable to last year results.

So, the good news? Finished 21 out of 1752 and 1 out of 109 in AG. There was no Masters top 3, so that's a legit age group victory. My first ever.

Finally, as Annyong mentioned, he missed the start of the race. However, he waited around for the finish and found me. Nice guy. Although I'm not 100% positive it was really him. We chatted for 10 or 15 minutes and he didn't mention his penis even once!

I live in Downers Grove and like some of the nearby races. I'll run more than this, but will certainly run:

5/10/14 Groovin' in the Grove 5K

6/22/14 Downers Grove 5 miler I think Tri-Man is running this one this year too.

Nice race, Jux! Are you saying this is the first time you ever won your age group at this particular race? Because that would be crazy if you are talking about all races.

Yes, Brony, we'll all have to meet for a race this summer. Juxt - beating last year's time after this crazy winter really is quite an accomplishment. And congrats on winning your AG! Until two or three years ago, you were essentially a distance guy, as I recall. That would help to explain why you haven't been regularly bringing home hardware until these recent years, since the long races seem to be harder to place in. You're certainly making up for lost time now! And do detect some subtle pressure to run the DG 5 miler with you again?

A solid workout for me today: a 15/9 run, with the 9 miles at 8:12/mile and a 160 HR. I really needed a hard distance effort, and the low 40 temps and clear sidewalks allowed me to do it. Got back in time to see my Wolverines finish off Ohio.

Nice races guys...and great AG win for you Juxt.

Im sort of at a different place right now with everything.

Ankle doesn't seem to really be getting any better despite now lower mileage.

Have my annual physical next week where I will bring it back up with the doc.

Also just haven't been as into most of my longer runs lately.

THinking about just settling in to running 3 times a week about 5-6 miles each time...to go along with my working out 3 other days.

Take an even bigger break from longer races and racing altogether for a bit and just run to run and enjoy it rather than feel like I am training for something.

I say an even bigger break...because looking back now to last year with the hernia...I haven't raced since the marathon in Dec. 2012.

St. Malichi five miler.

I am going to start off with the good. My first mile was 5:50, last mile was 6:15, and I finished in the top 5%. 82nd of 2,000+. The problem was the middle of the race. I hit the wall way too early and frustratingly it was because of stomach issues. Never got the morning pipes cleared and it slowed me down big time. It was too crowded to get my split at two mile and the dufus at mile three was playing with his phone when I ran by, but I'm guessing miles three and four were well over seven minutes. Stride was too short and I couldn't churn my legs fast enough because of the stomach issues. Problem got worked out as I made my way up to the mile four split then I took off for the home stretch.

It was windy and thirty and while my legs are a little spent right now there is more juice left. Pr was 31:30 three years ago and clocked in here at 33:55. I don't know if I will pr again, but it can get into the 32's I'm sure.

Too bad. High winds and stomach issues are not a good combination. It's early in the season after an historically cold winter. I'm sure good things are to come for you this spring.

Wow ...didn't realize you completely missed 2013! Take things at your pace, sho nuff. It's easy to feel some pressure here on the thread to be running big miles and racing, but you need to do what's best for your health and family schedule. As old worrierking :bye: and I can attest, there are lots of years to be racing. The ebbs and flows of life will always interrupt our plans.

Nice job FUBAR, MAC & Juxt!!!! Congratulations on the AG win Juxt. Hard to believe its your first.

Anxious to hear about the Death Race. As BnB said, weather today was great, weather tonight & tomorrow prolly gonna suck hard.

Ugh, just read one of the two ladies running the Death Race DNF'd at 45 miles, "just didn't want to face one more mother effin hill". Said it was hands down toughest trail she's ever run.

Edit to add the other female friend bowed out at 20 miles due to foot problems. 0-2 but somehow I'm thinking this will not be the fate of BnB

 But you are, right? I think parasaurolophus is coming down from Wisconsin for this and Annyong is committed too.
I am sorry. I just googled DG 5 miler and I am registered for a marathon the 22nd. I completely forgot about this.
No problem. I was just in hard recruit mode yesterday!

Yeah...wasn't planning anything til the Country Music last year...then missed that with the hernia surgery.

Was ready to bounce back for St. Jude Half and it was cancelled due to ice.

Not worried about missing out on racing. Just going to run more to enjoy it and at time...go "naked" without the watch or music and just run to run. No penis though, sorry Annyong.

Instant Classic Marathon Race Report

First the basics. I thoroughly enjoyed this event. By far my favorite marathon and in my top 3 of races I've done. Others being the Bel Monte 50k and Beach 2 Battleship HIM. Like the 50k (and I've said a few times) this was a trail race. I don't really care if I do another road marathon (I do have one in May), but I love the trail. Small race, 129 marathon runners and I think 250 doing the half. As most of you already know, trail races are better when they're smaller. Don't want to congest the trail.

Pre-race: I didn't taper much, but I limited running miles last week and didn't do anything other than walk on Friday. No expo, just pick up your stuff at a running store, but this was perfect. The t-shirt, not a fan but it's comfortable. Driving into the park gave a brief show of the terrain - while not mountainous, portions were certainly steeper than I had trained on.

Start: 44 degrees and nice. The half kicked off 15 minutes before the full, which would be a problem. Got to the starting line just after the half kicked off, walked and stretched a bit. Ate 1/2 of a muffin. We get to the starting line and was surprised to see nobody was crowding the front, I position myself near but not at the front, next to a guy wearing just shorts and sporting full body tats and on the other side was the Guinness record holder for most marathons in a year, Larry Macon - 157. Figured he'd know how to pace, but he's quite a bit older and slow. So we're off and the first thing we do is climb over 150' in 1/4 mile. So we start slow but the heart rate hits 160 early.

Miles 0-5: The goal here was to just run easy but strong. I pretty much do that until around mile 2.5 when we start running into half marathoners. The two guys I was running near are obviously smarter than I am and let me go ahead, to narrow trails where I had to keep calling "on your left" as I pass the halfers. We split near mile 4 and the other guys pass me near the top of the first hill. I'm feeling pretty good, though I quickly realize the steep hills are going to be ugly, and I walked the steeper parts of two. 1st mile 8:22, miles 2-4 were 7:50s, mile 5 got slower at 8:55. Still just over 40 is pretty much on target for what I wanted.

Miles 5-13.1: Chugging along between 8:07 and 8:44, feeling pretty decent. Took my first gel at just over an hour (plan was on each hour), still have my water bottle, just taking sips and bypassing the aid stations. Took a wrong turn in mile 9, for .8 extra miles :wall: The guy next to me did the same, then disappeared as he found the right path. Can't do much about it, so just keep on moving... at mile 10 I see the first guy coming the other direction, he was at mile 13 at sub 90 minutes. A few minutes later I see the 2nd guy. Every few minutes I'd see another person. Didn't count them but maybe just over a dozen? The turn-around point is up a hill, somewhat motivating. My 13.1 mile mark was 1:51, I'm feeling pretty good.

Miles 13.1-25: Enjoying the trail although I wouldn't see too many people. I passed one guy, took a leak around mile 15, he passed me while I was peeing, I passed him soon after. Feeling pretty good but don't want to push it too much. I'd stay under 9 until mile 17. I'm not entirely sure how it happened but I must have taken a wrong turn as I see people running down a trail to my right and the sign is facing them, pointing to their right (so I'd go straight). At first I considered figuring out where I went wrong, but when I see the mile marker is still .3 less than I had ran, I figured karma caught me back up. Really lucky break as the trail could have taken me the wrong way again. So now I'm running with a 52 year old woman and another guy, but not for long as they were going faster than I would. Thankfully the aid stations were set up every mile with water and Endurox which I took but don't like as it wasn't mixed very well. I'd forgotten how much the last 5 miles in a marathon suck. I think the chip was interfering with my heart rate monitor as I averaged in the high 180s / low 190s every mile, with my max well over 200 for portions (234 was the highest).

Miles 25-26.2: I catch up to one guy and we chat for a minute, he's doing ok but suffering the usual last mile issues. We keep going until a hot little woman passes by and I decide she's better to watch for the last mile. We run together the rest of the way, walking just one steep hill, then sprint in together (well, sprint's a strong word, but the last minute was sub 6). We'd talk for a while afterwards, she's a coach in the area. Very tempted to get some coaching.

Overall: Total 3:54 (26.6 miles), splits of 1:51 / 2:03, not sure if that's okay or if I should have that better balanced. Pretty happy to complete my first marathon in 5 years, and will look for more trail races. Nice to have this one in the books and prepare for another (this time a road race) in 6 weeks. I'm not sure but I think I can go sub 3:30 on easier terrain, which is about where I thought I'd be. Now the questions of recovery vs. training for the next one... thinking I bike and swim more this week, maybe get an easy run or two in mid-late week. I'll probably run an easy 10 or so next Sunday, then get back into training after that. Don't want to rush back too fast.

Nicely done! That's a hell of a time for a trail marathon, congrats.

Thanks for the write up and congrats FUBAR. You too Hang 10. You guys make this look so easy.

Lot of respect for the daily dedication in this thread.
