Ran a 10k in June (6 Viewers)

Euphorian exhaustion. Few things in life give quite the same high combined with satisfaction and physical drain as the first ride outside in months. Nothing that I can have while in a different state than my wife anyway.

The battlefield has a sufficient road going through it, which allows for a 3.5 mile interval one way, then 4 miles including turning around in the parking lot. So 3x 3.5 7/10 PE with 4 miles 5/10 PE between. The harder intervals were roughly 21mph @ 163 bpm. The recoveries were ~ 18mph / 153bpm. Need to improve cadence as it fell under 90 too often during the harder intervals. Total of 1780' ascent, so it was fairly flat with just a couple decent hills.

It's amazing how different riding outdoors is, but I think the time on the trainer will help. This was the first time I've ever rode with a cadence counter, so that should help the training as I've found (like most runners turned triathlete) I'm a masher.

One mile short of 300 on the year, about three months ahead of last year. Shooting for 32:30 in my five mile race Sunday, not optimistic but I think I can shave some time off my 33:55 last month.

Pretty sure I agreed to do a leg of the Burning River 100 relay last night. It also happens to be the same day as a 5 k we do every year. Haven't done two races the same day before, so that will be a new challenge!

The bicycle guy thread is pretty funny, you cyclists sure piss off a lot of people ;) . It made me think of running etiquette and I have a few questions. I always run against traffic and some of my routes have lots of side streets or parking lots that cars pull out of. Drivers don't always look right when turning right and I fully expect to do a hood/windshield roll at some point. If I make eye contact with driver I will run in front of them, if I can't make eye contact I loop behind their car. What is the proper thing to do in this situation?

Also, I disregard most crosswalk signs if the coast is clear at intersections with traffic lights, unless of course johnny law is around. Is this kosher?

I am doing my best to piss off Scoresman. He's one of the general ##### around here, so fully deserving.

As far as your running safety, that's exactly what I do. Though, unlike my peachy disposition while biking, while running if someone doesn't look my way before pulling out I'll wave and give them the "WTF is your malfunction" gesture. But I'm sure as hell not running in front of them.

I really hope to po po let safe jay walking slide, I have done it a few times in front of them and have had that moment of doubt in my mind, but I really hope they have better things to do.I don't handle drivers appropriately, so I doubt I am the best source. There is usually yelling, swearing, staring, and the occasional window punch. I mean if it is a case of the driver paying attention but we both kinda sneak up on each other, ok, but if you're doing a rolling stop trying to beat oncoming traffic not looking the other way while on your phone I will try my hardest to put a scare into you.

I had one incident with a cop car that sticks out. He was coming to a stop and was clearly only looking one way and not stopping where he was supposed to, so I stopped right at the edge of the sidewalk folded my arms and waited for him to finally turn his head and see me. He looked mortified and tried to rolld own the window, but I just ran off anyway. I hope that stuck with him. I guess as long as I think some drivers are learning to be more aware of runners on the road I'll continue to do it although I know I shouldn't make an issue out of it. Risk isn't justified.

I have noticed I have gotten a lot more chill since I started running more miles. Long, slow run,see a car doing something that doesn't work for me, slow down, wait my turn, then proceed. Angry MAC still returns on the shorter runs though.

All was good yesterday on the ride until some chick pulled out from the parking lot right in front of me, we made eye contact and she gave that sweet ignorant smile and seemed to laugh, that shows she had no clue that I just slammed on my brakes to keep from riding into her.

Otherwise I do agree that we should pick our routes carefully.

Dude, you can run a 5K in almost 18 flat. If you pace yourself correctly, 32:30 should feel like sandbagging.

Nothing wrong with mashing if that's what comfortable and gives you the best watt to hr output w/o blowing up your legs. I've been around and around with my coach about this. Totally blew off the cadence thing during tempo to lactate class this year and had my best results ever.

Nice workout there.

So who's all running Boston this year? Besides me, I mean. :hifive:

We should definitely try to get together at some point over the weekend!
I didn't qualify.
Did you decide whether you're going to toe the line at MMT100 next month?
I'll train for it this month and make a decision at the end of month. Probably will find the hardest 20 miles of trail I can find at the end of the month and see if I can hold a 15 min pace.

8.27 mile run last night at 10'49" pace that kicked my rear. Tried to keep it in zone 1 but most of it was mid zone 2 (141 average hr). Had planned on 1.25 hrs but ended up at 1.5 hrs. Really don't know what got me...didn't take water or food and it was warm, sore from previous two days, have a cold / sore throat, generally slow.

A road I planned on using back into town was no longer there and a retirement home was now there. Some old dude on a golf cart chased me down and said they don't allow running after dark so I back tracked. Wish it had been a tempo run so I could have said catch me if you can.

in theory, executing has been a struggle but I can point my finger at winter weather for that right now. At the five mile race last month I started off too fast then developed stomach issues during the race. Double whammy.RRunning smarter and making sure the pipes are clear this time.

You're only trying to run a 6:30 pace, so the main thing you need to concentrate on is not running a 5:XX to start the race. Hell, you could probably run a 7:00 to start and with your speed you'd have plenty time to negative split and reach your goal.

I ran a 5:50 first mile last month. Oops. It was very downhill though. I knew it was too fast, but didn't think it'd be a back breaker because of the elevation drop. Still not convinced it was, but stomach issues couldn't be escaped.

Just trying not to over correct this time. Another downhill start, so I will be careful though.

Personally I think your goal is a bit conservative for you but if that's your goal there's noway you should start that fast again. BUT at the least, you should shoot for even splits and start at your goal pace and just play the last couple miles by ear. Speed it if you got more in the tank.

Never done a window punch but I've slapped probably 100 cars over the years. I'm trying to stop that though. It's like road rage -- there is never really an upside.

I will confess to being a bit of an ####### runner at times. I run through red lights. I believe I always have the right of way at 4 way stop signs. I like to sprint between cars when they are turning on a left green arrow. I also will purposely speed up to make some encounters closer than the driver probably predicted.

that's my gameplan, start 6:30 maintain then push it if I still feel good after the turnaround. Out and back course.

all of this, despite knowing about the no upside decisions you mentioned. I can tell myself one thing, but once I'm a couple miles in I transform into something else.

Maybe... just reading too much about how bad lower cadences can be for your legs over long distances. 80-90 seems most comfortable, but don't want to wear out too much before the run in a half or full.

Double tabata run today.

2.5 miles PE 5

stretch

8 x 30s sprint, 10s jog

5 minute recovery slow jog

8 x 30s sprint, 10s jog

5 minute recovery slow jog

2.5 miles PE 7

Tally during tonight's run:

One raise of my arms and a "WTF" for a driver not looking before turning right at a stop sign.

One full body crash into the side of a car for dramatic effect when a driver was looking to attempt a turn at a red light without stopping at the line. I kinda feel bad about this one. When I went around to the other side of the car the woman looked absolutely horrified.

I don't know where I fit on that scale, but for most of my runs I carry a key in my hand in the event some ahole drivers stop 1-2 ft in front of the stop sign instead of right behind the line like they are supposed to and cut me off in the process. Most of the time I just hit settle for pounding on the side of their car like Juxt but one of these days when I am in a really bad mood someone is going to get keyed.

You guys running downtown during rush hour or something? I so rarely have problems with cars.

Also, full body crash, Jux?? Did you're 110 lb frame do any damage to her rig?

Running by a large shopping center at 6:00 p.m. is probably asking for trouble.

It seems like they make cars softer these days. I bounced.

I haven't run in two weeks. Stomach flu ran through our house three weeks ago. I had a good 3 miles Saturday two weeks ago between a lot of other stuff in the afternoon. By 5 I had the worst migraine I have had in a while. Th A few years ago when I was working out pretty heavy I got a few migraines if I worked out during the day. Now I am too freaked out to run.

Meh...still no real running for me.

Ankle having some minor issues still and started going to physical therapy to try and get it completely right.

Though, still chugging along going to the gym and working out 3 days a week, plus elliptical crap each of those workouts and 2 more days.

Probably in better overall shape right now than I have been in a while.

If a car pulled out in front of me during most of my runs, they'd hit a tree. or five.

I have a HM in 5 weeks on May 10. Since I've been lazy as hell all winter and year, I have decided to run every day in April. My legs are already sore. I think going for a 7.5 miler right off the bat was a bad idea when I usually only have time to get 3-4 in.

Half marathon for me tomorrow.
Good luck!

Cheaha Challenge for me Sunday, weather permitting. 104miles, 11,500ft. of climbing. It is a Gran Fondo, not a race, but it will still kick my ###.

I almost ran into a turkey crossing the trail today. He failed to cross the trail in a marked crosswalk, so he almost became lunch. Luckily for him like everything else I come across he was much faster than me.

One of the better outings I've had in awhile this morning - 7.5 miles with over 1100' of gain, almost all of that coming in a big power hike up Bald Hill miles 2-3. I pushed it a little bit today (comfortably hard) and set four Strava PRs, including 1:40 faster than I've ever done that climb. I took the long way back to get in some of my favorite section of semi-technical single track, and set two PRs on that section coming back down as well.

All in all, really felt good. The source of my motivation today was simple - over the past few days I've started to read race reports from the 100 miler I'm signed up for. And it's fair to say I'm scared ####less! I've got a long way to go before I'm going to feel ready toeing that line. It's a good thing I have until September.

Did you sign up for the Chicago Marathon lottery?
