FYI...Nashbar has 20% off everything...coupon code 47820. Just picked up a TT helmet and nutrition powders.
Some of those peaks look pretty sharp, won't they blow out your tires?
Holy #### today sucked.Probably set a record high in Mt. Airy NC of 96+ degrees. Someone recorded a temp of 106 on their bike computer on the second climb.

Well 82 miles took me somewhere around 7.25 to 7.5 hours. My avg speed was under 11 mph which is freaking pathetic. I've done longer centuries with more elevation gain faster! When I finished the 3rd major climb I was told that there were only 2 riders behind me. Kind of discouraging until they mentioned that roughly 85 departed and I was only approx the 25th to summit the 3rd climb. People were evidently bailing left and right. I had to rest for at least 20 mins here. Some numbskull decided we didn't need a water stop at the second peak so I ended up having to ration water up the 3rd climb. Generally these were 1500 ft climbs in roughly 3 miles. I had to stop about 6 times up number three and ended up getting dizzy and a slight headache. When I got to the top they were hauling a guy in the SAG van. At the finish two guys were laid out in the parking lot getting ice dumped on them. Us NC guys don't take to the heat like you Texas guys. Well the third summit put me at 50 miles. The remaining 30 and last climb were hell. Cramping became an issue on the inside thighs of all places and I ended up pusing the bike a good bit and then some up the last climb and a hill coming in. Wouldn't suprise me if I hiked 2 miles today. I've come to the realization that I'll never be a climber and my hopes for the Senior TDF league are irrational.

I weighed in at 209 this morning. Consumed 15 bottles during the ride and probably another 6 before/after. After just finishing my second beer I just weighed in at 200. I'd like to say that I had fun today, but that would be a major lie. A guy at the finish who claimed to have completed a full ironman said that wasn't as brutal then what he'd just finished. I tend to doubt that, but I'm looking forward to some flat rides in the near future. Well hopefully I at least got some conditioning benefit out of this abortion.

PS: To tired to proof for spelling and grammer so any smoo's can just deal with it.

No TT helmet for the road race, but why all the wise cracks. I believe it's the cheapest way to improve speed equipment wise and I think visor/sunglasses change will solve the issue of peaking over the top of the frames and getting crap in my eyes. If it makes you guys feel better my road helmet only cost $35.Wanted to add that I'm in love with the bars. Road with the main pack for the first 8 miles. They gapped me on a hill followed by a descent to the point they were out of sight, but I reeled them back thanks to the bars over the next 3-5 miles and got to tag along for a few more miles before the climbs ended the dream. I absolutely own the rollers with the bars. That is a very cmfortable riding position.

One more thing for you and coldeus to crack on. I had my feet measured and a wedge adjust made to my shoes. The tech said to expect 8-12 add'l watts based on the elimination of the extreme wobble in my pedal stroke.

no solid poops yet. Thanks for asking. :lmao: Had buddies do 4:50 and 5:35 today. :jealous:
Couldn't you do the pro-pee thing in reverse??? Couldn't resist.Has this been an on-going issue since the last ride you reported on?

Sucks when the buddies get to ride. What's next on the calender? Seems like a fall/winter ride would be the time to crack the 5 hour barrier.

Nah, the HnH is sort of the gold standard around north texas. You ain't really done it till you've done it there and it was hot. Luckily it wan't really hot enough to "count" this year anyways. So I had that going for me. Got nothing on the calendar really. Just gonna base down and try to not get too fat.

The TT helmet... ... I was a total Tri Gear-head, but even that thing I wasn't going to touch... dunno- just too... much. Plus, I'm happy getting air on my head- prefer that to gaining whatever speed the helmet would give me (always figured I'd lose the speed gained by overheating)I do empathize with the glasses issue (a problem with riding in the bars)... I picked up the Oakley zero Ls (iirc) that were a bit Ace Freeley looking- I was given a lot of #### for thim, but they were frameless and big (I've got a big head) which allowed me to use them while in the bars without looking over/under the top of the glasses frame and still getting full coverage. And I also use a lift (just a shoe insert) in one shoe when I ride- no cracks there. I'll just stick to riding you for the helmet... but seriuosly- nice job on the ride today, regardless of the speed- you finished when it sounds like most of the other people bailed. ... even if you looked like a goon doing it.

It would have been close. Weather was as good as it was gonna get. The faster guy said he had no support at all past about mile 80 so that still can get you down in a twosome. Woulda, coulda.

another 5k run under 30min...29.57 to be exact. 3 seconds slower than my last run, but i'll use the excuse that i ran only 90 minutes after eating my supper when i usually run a good 3 hours after eating...i definitely felt the difference in digesting times

I find it hard to believe you are just now coming to the conclusion you need to change things in your shoes. If you needed a wedge to correct a varus or whatever they call it you'd have known it a long time ago from hotspots. And please, don't be that guy in a TT helmet. Jam a doorstop full of wedges in your shoes before you do that. tia

I didn't come to that conclusion myself strangely enough. I had a fitting done last week. Strangely enough I had everything dialed in except the seat height was off by a 1/2 inch and the levers were canted off inwards more than I would have thought. There was a wobble in the stroke that I hadn't noticed or assumed was normal. The cleats were aligned dead on so maybe only being off in one deminsion prevented hot spots (which I couldn't tell you what they are anyway).I'll likely do the full 9 race TT series at LMS next year in addition to some other TT events so I'm working towards getting the equipment.

So, I am going to veg today and take it easy, and maybe ride with my wife this evening.
I soooo thought about editing out a word in here, Darrin, but you're too good a guy for me to do that. It is a lot tougher to train when the work/life schedule gets so busy, but that's why the race goals help to keep us going. Don't stress over the change in plans - as floppo notes, the rest is important, too.
Well, after taking it easy yesterday I woke up this morning feeling great, so I went out and ran the 11 mile I was planning for yesterday. I finished in just over an hour and 54 minutes at a 10:23 pace. I am a little sore now, but a couple of hours sitting around will make me feel better.

So does every distance run start off with a tornado?
Except in San Francisco! :yucky:
Hurricane, right?
Hey, I said I wasn't trying to rub it in! But, you're right, I probably was just a little. Someday I'll be running across the GG Bridge, the Big One will hit, and I'll get mine.Oh, and it's about 65 and overcast right now at 8:30, should be a perfect 80 degrees by this afternoon. ;) :P Five weeks from today is the Bridge to Bridge race. As posted earlier, I have 2 weeks to decide if I'm going to do the 7K or go for the 12K. Today's "long run", planning on at least 5 miles, will be a start towards pushing for the 12k. As 2Young hit on, if I'm going to do the 12K I'd like to get a run in of at least that distance prior so I don't have that psychological wall at whatever my longest distance has been.

Ah, stretch yourself ...go for the 12k! You should be able to push your max distance up to 7 or 8 miles over the next three weeks.

I thought about doing the exact same thing. Too funny. :lmao: Finished a good, strong 7-miler this morning in 53 minutes (7:34 pace). Last 3 miles were all under 7:30.
:moneybag: A great 15 mile run yesterday. (Hard to believe this is just three weeks after my last race.) I focused on getting in a dozen hills, which meant a lot of repeat looping, but that added additional discipline to the workout. I really learned my lesson with the spring marathon about needing to get some hill work in. I'll be working these hill loops frequently over coming weeks. My pace was steady throughout, and I clocked the last mile at 8:02. Later in the day I could really notice the effect of having thrown hills into the run ...stress, recover, improve.

2Young and BnB - great efforts for both of you (and Mrs. 2Young)! 2Young, interesting to hear of the lessons learned while hanging tough and beating 90 minutes. BnB, I can hardly comprehend the challenges you faced. Way to go, guys!!! :moneybag: :lmao:

I pushed my workouts this week- fast tempo run (4x 7:30m) on wed and my first "hill" work (Williamsburgh Bridge) on Friday. Since today was a "shorter" run inbetween last week's 15 and next week's 18, I decided to try and push this 12m too.

bleh.

Thought I'd do 3x 4m with 30s walks inbetween. Did the first 4m in 34:00 (vs my usual 9:00m pace on these long runs), but the legs felt like absolute crap. Ended up walking at each mile and still felt like crap. By mile 9 I was just hanging on for each mile... it was absolutely horrible.

Considering I felt great for last week's 15 (at almost exactly 9:00m pace) and the weather was pretty decent this morning- especially compared to your run yesterday- I'm going to use my PTTS card on tired legs from the workouts this week (which tells me I really need to get more hill work going). I'll back my PTTS by blaming the baby for keeping me up too... I get two PTTSs, right?

Overall- struggled to come in at 1:49:40. Will take it easier this week leading up to the 18m next weekend. 6 more miles today would have been UGLY.

Seriously- that looks like some beautiful riding down there. I'd hate to show you the crap I'm forced to ride around NYC (or at least- used to ride)... I wouldn''t be able to stop long enough without risking getting run over by a truck.

You should absolutely rock the TT lid next time you do another hilly ride- they keep you nice 'n cool when you're in granny, with a HR of 190 doing 6mph.

6??? Try 3.5-4.3. Any slower and I would have been moving backwards.

Yoiks.

For the bikers here. If there's any interest in doing a mountain ride next year, I've got a vacation home in Beech Mountain, NC that will sleep 14. I'll supply the lodging, food, and drink...you supply the legs and lungs. Plenty of stuff to do for the non-bikers you might want to bring.

Still feeling like absolute crap from my "run" today... seriously dreading 18m next weekend.
12m and I feel like crap for a 1/2 week. 18m would push that to a week. The only thing I can think of that would be worse than running 18m is taking a VO2 max test.

Floppo, hate to pile on your lack of ride scenery, but I finally got out to Lake Lagunitas this morning, beautiful out there. Kills me that I've lived 3 miles from there for 3 years and it's the first time I've been out there.

So I was thinking it'd be a nice flat trail around a lake. Instead, I got my first ever hill work in! Decided to walk up the steepest grade right at the beginning before I started running, thinking it'd flatten out when I got up to the first lake. But the first mile, mile and half from there was all up hill, finally turned around and headed back down. It was tough, but I was really pleased that I was able to do it. I then headed out another trail that was a little flatter, just a few rolling ones. Got back and headed down a narrow trail that gave me my first glimpse of trail running, complete with rocks, roots, and precarious footfalls. Interesting how much it changes things when you have to concentrate so much on every step, and also quickly felt it in muscles that don't normally speak up. Came back to the parking lot and had been going 45 minutes, wanted to get to 60 figuring that would at least put me somewhere in the 6 mile neighborhood, so ran down the road a bit and then back. Got back at 55 minutes or so, then decided to tackle the steep hill I walked up at the beginning. That really hurt, and I don't know what my maximum heart rate is but that had to be close. Got up to the top, turned around, and stopped right at 60 minutes, walking back down to cool off.

It felt great! So much better running out there like that than along the concrete trails right near my house, or even the Embarcadero run around the ball park I do during the week. And to tackle some nice hills, and succeed, really felt good. So good, I decided already to sign up for the 12k instead of the 7k, as I'm confident that I can add the distance in the next 5 weeks that I'll need. Of course if I can't walk tomorrow that may change my line of thinking......

well considering they didn't even get to 5:00 and had 100 or so people and 15,000 did it. I imagine there's a more complete list.

Got up to the top, turned around, and stopped right at 60 minutes, walking back down to cool off.It felt great!
I'm jealous as all hell  , but really glad you finally got out there! I've only gone by Lagunitas in passing, I think- either hiking or Mtn Biking- beautiful. Or maybe I'm confusing that with Phoenix Lake, right near Ross? Phoenix Lake has a pretty flat trail that loops around the lake, IIRC. My best friend takes his 7 yo son on that loop (and of course the 7yo has all the mtn biking gear for it and a nicer bike than mine... now that really gets me :) ... ), so I'm pretty sure it's flattish.Great stuff on the run- especially on the leg-wrecking hill at the end!Ok... dammit... just started thinking about how frigging nice it is out there...

Quite the sausage fest, but what in the heck do you breed in Texas that's "mixed"?
tandems?
I'm guessing that most people chose not to spend the extra $5 to chip?
well considering they didn't even get to 5:00 and had 100 or so people and 15,000 did it. I imagine there's a more complete list.
Am I not reading that right... the fastest person did 100m in 1:13? Great googly-moogly. That can't possibly be right, can it?

Looks like a couple of chip malfunctions for the first few entries. The website didn't say a partial list, but I would have thought significantly more than 100 of 15K would have been chipped. I was looking for an acquaintance of mine that moved to Texas in the spring. She was planning on riding it this year.So Coldeus, how do they handled 15,000 people? That's 4 a sec for an hour. That's a peleton that could provide a serious draft.

The two that went that fast were aged 12 and 13. I imagine they checked the wrong box.

more than 4 a sec for the first part of it. they utilize a 6 or 7 lane road blocked in the opposite direction for the first few miles. They also stagger the start a bit. It works, but it can be a  also.

Mt. Mitchell was only 1250 and they had a 7 lane road totally blocked and it was chaos. I couldn't imagine 12x that. How big are the groups on the road? At MtM we had groups of 100-200 for the first 40 miles. I rode in the back of one of those packs and the yo-yo effect was pretty scary.
