Ran a 10k in June (3 Viewers)

Well, I just finished the first run of week 5. It was exhausting and painful, but let me explain why I think it may have been tougher than it should have..

Saturday, we all went to Bad Durkheim's WineFest, it's like a jr. version of Oktoberfest, with wine instead of beer. I drank too much wine, then rode a LOT of rides that seemed designed to maim and injure. Anyhow, I have some pretty bruises on my arms and legs from this ride that was like a Gravitron.. kind of. However, it also tilted on it's axis, and you were supposed to hold on to the sides to not slide into the middle. Well, some crazy kids would let go and slide around, crashing into the sides once the spinning gravity caught up to them. I decided it looked like fun, so me and a friend immediately started pushing ourselves into the middle, to let this beast of a ride have it's way with us. Thank god I was drunk, or I'd have felt all the bruises then, and not enjoyed it as much as I did. Anyhow, it is with this soreness that I progressed onto my run tonight.

This run was 3 sets of 5 minute runs. on Thursday I'll have 2 8 minutes runs, and on Saturday.... 20 minutes running, straight. So in 2 running sessions its go from 5 minutes to 20 minutes. Is this where I finally am unable to make it? Will I be intimidated and give up? Will my legs simply cease allowing me continued forward motion?

Honestly, I have no idea. All I know is I plan to try as hard as possible, knowing that I need to be able to come in here and say I made it.
I have to believe that running after any sort of German Oktoberfest has got to be an accomplishment, so you're doing great! But next time you offer excuses, we're going to have going to have to get this back from floppo and pass it on to you -

I think it only counts as a :tfp: excuse if it's used to explain failure, not to explain minor adversity that was overcome.. ;)

Did a nice little "double" today (albeit unintentionally). I was planning on doing 14 this morning before work, but I couldn't drag my butt out of bed, so I did an easy 4-miler instead (31:08, 7:47/mile).

That being said, I really wanted to do another longer run prior to my half marathon on the 23rd, and I'll be gone to Cancun this weekend for my friend's wedding, so I left work around 3:00 and hit the pavement to do another 10 miles. The 46 MPH wind gusts made it interesting, but I finished a good, strong run in 1:17:36 (7:46).

Hoping to do at least a couple of 30- to 45-minute runs while vacationing, then back to the grind next week. Good luck to everyone racing this coming weekend (especially Furley and tri-man at the Dash for a Splash)! I wish I could be there to smoke you guys!

ran another 5k in 28.47 last night....had to cut back to every third night to run since I started to develop an agonizing pain in the arch of my left foot after running every other night for about two weeks...i'll see how this goes and might go back to every other night if it doesn't appear with this scheduling

I am in race prep mode. I plan to drink at least two liters of water a day, maybe three on Friday. I had planned a light run yesterday afternoon but it got lightening'd out, so I am going to try to get a couple of real easy miles in this evening. Thursday and Friday I have planned for rest day. This will be my first 4 mile race and I hope that I don't screw it up.

Nice job everyone, keep the motivation coming. As for me, I did manage to attempt, at least, the 6 mile run when I arrived in Ann Arbor on Friday. After only 2 hours of "plane sleep" on the red eye, combined with the gin-and-tonics and coffee I had on each end of the trip, I was hurting. Managed the first 2 miles to the Big House pretty well, but then started getting side aches - only other time I have had that problem was running at 5000+ feet in Tahoe a month ago. Alternated running and walking through downtown, and then finally threw in the towel with about a mile left and walked the rest of the way back to the hotel. So a little disapointing, but I'm still glad I got out there and did something, especially considering how easy it would've been to just start into the beers as soon as I got there (which my friends were doing!).Will get back on the horse tomorrow, spending all day today trying to rehydrate my body from the weekend and hoping for a 2nd good night of sleep to get me feeling right again by tomorrow.Three weeks from yesterday to my 12K!
I'm officially taking you off of whiskey until after your race. Beer is OK, but only in moderation. Same is true for coffee/caffiene. Oh, and I'm expecting a solid run - 6 miles, though an easy 7 would be better - this coming weekend. :goodposting: :X :hot:  And don't worry about the Big House - that place has been making many of us feel pretty crappy lately.
Don't know what you mean, I very much enjoyed my time in the Big House!Back on the horse yesterday for a 3+ miler, ran it at a pretty decent pace for me at around 9:00. Even tacked on two intervals of speed work on the end for good measure. Planning on another one like it tomorrow/Friday, and then a 6.5-7 mile run on Sunday morning.

Fair enough. We'll let floppo keep the shirt until his kid is in preschool.

I'm in that fine line of being sick (low grade fever) and needing to get a run in today.

I've got a 20m this weekend  and I want to get my two runs in this week before it.

Yeah, yeah... I know...

:slapsmoneyontable: I'm out

I went out for a very slow 5 miler yesterday, one week after tweaking my calf, and ended up limping in. I've done more damage to the calf, and am going to have to take an extended amount of time off. I'll take two weeks off of everything, and start biking in the third week, and running in the 5th week (I've gone through this before unfortunately). In the meantime, I'll start lifting upper body much heavier than I have been immediately (anaerobic = to burn the calories I'll be consuming due to being pissed off), will start Power Yoga next week, and lower body strength training the week after. I'll also spend a lot of time reading up on Chi Running, and will continue my swimming drills two days a week, with one day of actual swimming.

= no Half IM this year. It suxors being an old weenie.

Not doing the tri, will allow me to do this century. I've never done one, and my neighbor (who just did HHH VERY slowly) will be able to go at a very leisurely pace, and enjoy the day.

It feels like this thread is getting ready to go through a revival. I think every weekend between now and October 20th we have someone doing some sort of race or event! Awesome  Training note: I'm back to healthy! Bad weather and a new schedule forced me on the spin bike (alone) the last two days, but I made the most of the time. Monday night I only had 40 minutes so I did a 5 minute warm up and a 3 minute escalation to red-line, 2 minutes rest, then 3 minute intervals (into red-line territory) for the remainder. It was one hell of a workout and I was spent. Mission accomplished. Last night I did another solo workout because the spin instructor couldn't show. When I hit the tough spots I muscled through using Sid's post as motivation. It was another solid workout involving a warm up, ladders with active recovery, hills, and accelerations on the hill with a slow return to pace. Thought my legs would be toast, but I was strong throughout. Tonight should be on the road for a little over an hour of steady medium tempo work.

Ah, that all sucks. I feel for ya, liquors. After your good, restful summer, I know it's extremely frustrating to suffer an injury and have to back off.

Great to hear this solid report (along with SFD and Darrin's race prep and NE's improvement) to cheer us up after liquor's news!

Tell me you've seen a doctor?
I saw him after I tweaked it, and he told me there was a good chance I'd further damage the muscle. He also said that he understood that I wouldn't back off (his specialty is Sports Medicine), as...
"it's easier to get a crack addict off of crack than it is to get a runner to stop running."
I called his nurse yesterday, and had her tell him that I did tweak it worse. He returned the call later, and told me to come in next week, if it hadn't started feeling better by then. He has also strongly recommended Chi Running and that I take a minimum of 4 weeks off. I'm also going to incorporate the strength training routine I went through last time, which was recommended by a Physical Therapist. He has also recommended that I learn to run with less stringent goals. This will somehow have to be my next step, as every time I have been injured it's been due to pushing myself toward a race goal (i.e., a 3:20 marathon twice and now a 5:30 Half IM). I've never been hurt just training to train, or training just to complete a race. Hopefully the little guy in my head that says "you feel good, push this workout" won't rear his ugly head in the future. I must find a way to destroy him!

I'm slightly depressed, but also am looking forward to a new page of "training" with Total Immersion leading my swimming efforts, Chi Running and a new love of cycling (mostly bc I don't seem to get hurt cycling!). Re-hab sux, but beats no-hab!

Still sucks- but reallly great that you've got a gameplan here. And I totally empathize about pushing towards a goal vs just competing (or training). We sound like we've been on similar paths/targets, and when my body literally broke down while pushing my IM training ("if I keep pushing the training, I know I can approach the 11:00 mark" ). Since then, I've been SO snake-bit about pushing training, my inclination is to just [GordonRamsey] Shut it Down (donkey) [/GordonRamsey] when the slightest thing comes up. I guess as we get older, that line of when to push and when not to becomes that much more important... dunno.

Really wish you the best with the rest/rehab- and look forward to getting reports about the Chi running (never heard of this) and the Total Immersion swimming.

It is storming again this afternoon. If it stops before 7 I will go out for a short run. Any thoughts on running tomorrow if I get stormed out today?I usually don't run the two days before a race.

With the kind of miles you've been doing, finishing shouldn't be a problem. I don't see any harm if you go out tomorrow AM instead... taking it really easy and doing a handful of those pickups I mentioned. A couple of miles shouldn't wear you out in the slightest for the race, and I'm a believer that you need to keep the machine and all it's moving parts in motion- do a run.

I agree, but would probably only do 4 or 5 instead, at race pace.

Having a great training week here. I think I finally recovered from the Tour de Gaps damage. 5k Monday. Weightlifting and speed bike workout on Tuesday. Did 8 x 3 mins and put the hurt to my training partner. This was the best I've felt on the bike in quite some time. Lifted again today and ran 8K. Tomorrow will be a double brick with my training partner. 1 hr bike at 80%, 30 min run at 80%, 20 min bike at at hard tempo pace, and 10 min run. She's attempting to qualify for the world duathlon championships and has a national qualifier in Sept 29. First time I've attempted a double brick. Friday and Saturday are off days. Sunday I ride a century to the top of Grandfather Mountain.

After this event I will focus on the October time trial at the elusive 25 mph mark. I'm headed to Wisconsin for a week at the end of September to chase grouse so I'll have to bring my running shoes along to try to keep in shape.

The storms went away and I was able to get a short run in tonight. 2.25 miles in 20:33. I did 5 pickups at race pace and it all felt pretty good. Now I will hydrate and rest the legs.

Went for a long 3 mile run yesterday that lasted 7 miles. I was in Bloomington, IL for work and went for what I wanted to be a short run. I picked up an awesome paved trail that took me out to the end of town, corn fields and one of those energy fields with the mutiple high tech windmills. I wanted to get closer to see the windmills, but it was like someone kept movng them farther away. It was fun to do something new and the people running were a heck of a lot friendlier that what I normally encouter along the lakeshore at home.

I have been informed I'll be pulling a Bentley before Saturday's 10K on Friday night. I guess my wife forgot about the race and we are feather bowling with the older divorced crowd (who parties like freaking rockstars). Prehydrating with micro brews and burbon should be fun.

Good stuff here! I've really become a fan of trying new routes/paths when in a different environment. New things to see and experience while all the while being a bit edgy 'cause you're not 100% certain where you're at. You could always 'show off' a bit with the older crowd and tell them you're not drinking whiskey because you're running a 10K in the morning!

There's a lot of talk about not drinking whiskey in this thread. I find it very disturbing. Probably because I just got back from the gym and I'm drinking whiskey.

ETA - It's surprising how well whiskey washes down yogurt & granola.

:lmao: Possibly the biggest upside for being out for a bit, is that my whiskey (Scotch) consumption will not be infringed upon, nor will I have to feel guilty about it!

:porked:
  is right! Awesome, awesome workout BnB! I can't wait to hear details about the century as well.

Can't believe I'm going to type this, but the double brick was mostly fun. One hour on the bike at 19 mph. 30 min run...roughly 5k but I don't have the exact distance as I had to detour to take a leak. Regardless, it felt good, like I hadn't even been on the bike. 20 min on the bike at 22.9 mph which ties a pr on this route. The final 10 min run stunk as I hurt the legs on the bike. I maybe waddled a mile.

Rachael said this was a warm up for next week when the bar gets raised.

After taking a couple extra days' rest (ok ok, I ptts'd away my Tuesday run :loco: ), I did 5k this morning in 29:30. Legs are a little achey 4hrs later as I sit here at work. May have to take a walk around the floor every now and then today to loosen 'em up. :lmao:

I have 9mi on the agenda for Saturday, with 5, 7, and 3 the next three Saturdays respectively leading up to raceday. :fishing:

I get through my 10/21 race and I'll (finally) get back to my Scotch habit. Promise. It's been a lonnng time.10 miles with hills this morning, after biking 45 minutes yesterday and running 6 miles on Tuesday. I'll probably swim tomorrow and then see if I can get my butt up real early Saturday to drive up for the furley 5K. Sunday for me, like floppo, is a 20 mile run. Oh, and my wife just left me. She's off to Va Beach for four days to visit her best friend. All alone until Monday, and I'll use much of the time for workouts. I'm a sick man.

This seems like the appropriate time to hijack this thread: What Scotch will you be drinking to celebrate with? This has been my poison as of lately.

20 miles can't be fun.

Thoughts on my aero position or cool lid???

Did I mention the lid is cool???

Seems like I'm not getting a good tuck. The bike fitter had me move the aero bars back towards the seat prior to this. He was looking for a 90 degree bend at the elbows. I was more laid out before with the arms pretty straight. I may not be able to do much with this bike to improve things. Open to suggestions though.
You look pretty stretched out to me as well. A couple of thoughts:- if it's not already, move the saddle as far forward as possible for the TTs.

- buy a seat post with a bend that puts your saddle forward further.

- ditch the helmet.

Great. The forecast for 8:00 am on Saturday in Baraboo, WI is sunny and 38 degrees. How the hell am I supposed to convince myself to jump in a lake and swim 1/4 mile to start my first triathlon?

Looks like I'll be shopping for wetsuit tomorrow. I've never owned one, so hopefully there won't be any video cameras around while I'm trying them on, or when I'm trying to get it on before the race or off in T1.

;)

If you're an open water swimmer and know ANYTHING about wetsuits, please reply to my questions in THIS THREAD.

Just keep reminding yourself that it's PERFECT running weather.

Hey bikers and tri-umm-kers  , on my flight to Virginia Beach almost two weeks ago (time flies! :o ), they showed "The Flying Scotsman". It's about Graeme Obree, an amateur biker who set the world one-hour record in 1993 after re-inventing the bicycle using scrap metal and washing machine parts. He's pretty much to thank for today's aerodynamic lay-down-on-the-handlebars riding style. Tho the plane's engine drowned out the sound at times, I'd give it a  and will add it to my Netflix queue to see it again.

Nice thing about it- the water will most definitely be warmer than the air temp... so you have that to look forward to, which is nice.

Took my :cough: :cough: sick self out for a short run (the fever broke last night)... not pretty, but felt good to sweat a little and stretch out.

3m- 26:20
