– got my citrus from the orange wedge

...a runner's mentality. As furley noted, I joined him for the 5K race in DePere, WI this morning. That meant a 5:00 am departure, and a lot of construction and traffic coming home ...but it was definitely worth it! It was a great, cool, sunny morning for a race. I finished in 21:45 - ninth or tenth out of the 119 runners, and first in my age group (got a very cool towel!). Miles were steady - 6:55 for each of the first two, and a bit slower on the third, I think. OK for no race-specific training. With a half mile to go I decided to work on a guy in front of me and made up about 50 yards, but we finished on a sidewalk (

) so I didn't have room to totally rev it up and get 'im. My bad. It felt good to race a 5K!
Now to important things:
1) I'm super-proud of furley!

He mentioned before the race that he'd run the distance in 38+ minutes some weeks ago and was hoping to hit 40 minutes. So to come out, fresh from vacation with a lot of walking, and go sub-35 minutes is awesome. True, the aforementioned nine-year-old did make furley his #####, but when you think about how far furley has come in the past few months, it was great to see him running a steady 5K. The finish line sight of shouts and cheers for him was neat to see.
2) I'm humbled by the work of furley's mom and others at the school where they serve children with disabilities (ages 3-21, she mentioned). They fill a definite need and are clearly proud of their school (including the new pool for which the race was raising funds).

to furley-mom. And furley's whole family is cool.
3) Great job to the others who have reported in ...waiting on the Rock!
