Ran a 10k in June (6 Viewers)

The storms went away and I was able to get a short run in tonight. 2.25 miles in 20:33. I did 5 pickups at race pace and it all felt pretty good. Now I will hydrate and rest the legs.
:thumbup:Was it hard not running faster- did your legs want to just go?
Yea, a little bit. I had to make myself slow down from the pickups.
Excellent sign! You'll do great this weekend!I should've mentioned to start the pickups slow and work your way into them (ie: don't cruise along at your easy pace and immediately burst into race pace).

Thoughts on my aero position or cool lid???

Did I mention the lid is cool???

Seems like I'm not getting a good tuck. The bike fitter had me move the aero bars back towards the seat prior to this. He was looking for a 90 degree bend at the elbows. I was more laid out before with the arms pretty straight. I may not be able to do much with this bike to improve things. Open to suggestions though.
You look pretty stretched out to me as well. A couple of thoughts:- if it's not already, move the saddle as far forward as possible for the TTs.

- buy a seat post with a bend that puts your saddle forward further.

- ditch the helmet.
:lmao: One way I check my position, is that I try to get the angle caused by the bend at the elbow to be at 90 degrees (obviously for both arms). This will flatten your back out a bit, and (as stated above) will require you to get more forward. To get lower, try to bend at the waist = keeping your hips back. Also, it looks like your seat could be a little bit higher = bigger drop from seat to handlebars which makes you more aero. Move it just a little at a time, and you know you've moved it too far when your hips rotate as you pedal. My .02

Excellently :lmao: The seat height to bar height difference will also come to down to personal fit/feel. I've got a really tight back/shoulders, so my positioning is pretty flat (not high seat to low bars) to compensate. I think I've got a pic somewhere... here it is. But notice that I'm on a tri bike, which has a steeper seat-tube geometry (get's you further forward over the bb and bars. And yes, Culdeus, there are two bags on the frame in that picture (bento bag has been ditched until race-day... which is someday, maybe).

Here's that fast-forward seat post I was talking about earlier.

Went out for another post sickee run to shake the rust off for the 20m on Sunday.

Decided to just run easy, without any specific goals (tempo, interval, hill, time) other than to run 4.5-5 miles while marking my mile splits on the watch.

Was very suprised (considring my 9:00m goal pace, and recent ptts form of late) to see 8:18, 8:03, 5:26 (3/4mile), 8:03, 7:37 show up on the watch! Moral of the story... get sick more often?

Is this a good deal? Amazon has the Garmin 305 Forerunner for $217 plus the foot pod thrown in free

Link
i just bought the Garmin 205 and have been very happy with it.. I have a separate heart rate monitor so on the long runs I kind of look like Inspector Gadget with two watches, a fuel belt, a chest strap and a trench coat

You're a beautiful human being. But you do have a touch of that runner's obsession. Hope your 20 miler goes well this weekend! Be smart with it.
Best of luck to both of you!

:lmao: PHEW! Thought I had lost my moral compass- if only Polar would add it on to my damn HR/pace monitor...

Plus- running where I do (E. River), I need something to pass the time. Much easier for me to just run someplace nice... hell- even Central Park works(although I'll time the loops... :bag: ...)

Getting ready for the 4 miler tomorrow and I am about ready to hit the hay. My next post will be my race report and recap and hopefully I can run it up to my potential. It is supposed to be 74 degrees at 7 am but the humidity will be about 97%. Whatever else happens I am going to have fun. If I remember during the race I will hit the stopwatch for my mile splits. I hope everyone else has a good running/training Saturday.

Have a great evening.

Well, I just finished the first run of week 5. It was exhausting and painful, but let me explain why I think it may have been tougher than it should have..Saturday, we all went to Bad Durkheim's WineFest, it's like a jr. version of Oktoberfest, with wine instead of beer. I drank too much wine, then rode a LOT of rides that seemed designed to maim and injure. Anyhow, I have some pretty bruises on my arms and legs from this ride that was like a Gravitron.. kind of. However, it also tilted on it's axis, and you were supposed to hold on to the sides to not slide into the middle. Well, some crazy kids would let go and slide around, crashing into the sides once the spinning gravity caught up to them. I decided it looked like fun, so me and a friend immediately started pushing ourselves into the middle, to let this beast of a ride have it's way with us. Thank god I was drunk, or I'd have felt all the bruises then, and not enjoyed it as much as I did. Anyhow, it is with this soreness that I progressed onto my run tonight. This run was 3 sets of 5 minute runs. on Thursday I'll have 2 8 minutes runs, and on Saturday.... 20 minutes running, straight. So in 2 running sessions its go from 5 minutes to 20 minutes. Is this where I finally am unable to make it? Will I be intimidated and give up? Will my legs simply cease allowing me continued forward motion? Honestly, I have no idea. All I know is I plan to try as hard as possible, knowing that I need to be able to come in here and say I made it.
I made it. I don't feel celebratory, because I am tired and sore. Give me an hour or so.I had my (soon to be ex) wife come run with me. She's military, so runs all the time. She helped push me through. around 13 minutes, my side started aching a lot. I tried applying pressure, and around minute 16-17 it had mostly subsided. 5 weeks ago I was gassed running 60 seconds. now I'm gassed running 20 minutes. Weeee...Gonna take a long bath.

OK, been a half hour. I took a shower. I made it, woohoo!

;)i remember the first 20 minute run well. and i remember dreading it. finishing was a huge sense of accomplishment. congrats

Well, I finished the 4 miler today. The results are not posted yet online so I don't know about placing overall. I do know that I was 5 of 7 in my age group when I left.

I finished in 32:32, which is a little slower than I thought I could do. But only by about 30-45 seconds. I am very happy with the effort.

It was about 75 degrees at race time but the humidity was above 95% and I think that effected me a bit. And of course I started out to fast, as usual. I was really shocked when I saw that I ran the 1st mile in 7:26. Fastest mile ever! (for me) I forgot to push the dang button at the two mile turnaround , but I did remember to at the 3 mile. From the 1 mile marker to the 3 mile marker was 16:24. So if I split the difference then I did 8:12 for each mile, but I am betting the second mile was 10-15 seconds faster than the third. AT the 3 mile mark I was at 23:50 and slowing. I finished with an 8:40  final mile. Looking back I skipped the water at the 2.5 mile mark and I probably should have had a cup. I was fairly well dehydrated at the end.

Mile 1 - 7:26

Mile 2-3 16:24

Mile 4 - 8:42

I averaged 8:08 per mile, which is exactly what I averaged in my last 5K in May. There is another 5K in two weeks and I think I can break 25 minutes fairly easy.

I hope everyone that raced or trained today is as happy with their results as I am.

Keep it up.

ETA: The results are posted. I finished 31 out of 100. WOOHOO!!!!!!!!

First top third finish.

My good friend Steve Finished 3rd in his age group. This was his first race in that group. Congrats again Steve.

:headbang: Great job, Darrin!

A couple of thoughts...

- You did NOT need a water during the race. 30mins isn't enough time out there to warrant rehydration mid-race.

- Pacing... she's a #####. It's SO hard to keep the hounds in check that first mile or two when you've had a decent taper... your body is just raring to go. The slowing defintiely sounds like a combo of going out too fast and the sticky weather, as you already know. Lesson learned for your next race, which is always a good thing.

- Having a natural sense of your race-pace, which happens as you do more races and train more, is a real key for keeping things in check the first couple of miles.

Fantastic job again- matching your pace from a shorter race is a nice feather in your cap- as is running your fastest mile! Nice!

Nice work Sid and WTG Darrin!! Was this a beach run down there or a road race?

Just back from today’s 10K and ended up with a PB 47:50 :goodposting: under less than perfect conditions. 44 degrees at the start and wind out of the north. It was a double 5K repeat, in to the wind for about 4 of the 6+ miles.

I obeyed the fun governor tri-man and stuck to beer last night, which I would assume, contributed to the time (still had a good hand full of Blue Moons – got my citrus from the orange wedge). Ran a near perfect race for me. Finished the first 5K @ 23:45ish so I didn’t drop off in the second 5K. Placed 8th in the 35 to 39 age group, top three were all 40:xx something. Cool for me is that I placed 39th overall out of around 200+ runners. The top 10 or so places were taken up by a crew from the Hanson-Brooks Project. They have a local store here in Grosse Pointe Woods so it was very cool to see them send their runners for support (if you get Runner’s World, they just did a big spread on The Hansons a month or two ago).

just got home from my first ever 5k race!

after 2 weeks off for my honeymoon where i walked anywhere from 10-15 miles per day but didn't run once i was a little worried about my legs and breathing today. however, with a little assistance at the end from FBG's own tri-man ( who came all the way up from Chicago today  ) i finished with a personal best time.

it was tiring.. i trailed a 9 year old the entire way. in fairness to me though i'm pretty sure he was on the juice. waiting for the test results to nullify his finish. :hot:

Great run. Always nice to get PB's. Mine was done on a road. I really dislike beach races. Congrats for finishing so well.

WTG Furley, welcome to the club. Do you have a link, or are you going to post your time and place?I don't know about anyone else, but I framed my first race number and now I have 7 of them on the wall. Running races is such a huge accomplishment for the guys that used to be slightly :) overweight. Be proud of the work you have put in and what you have accomplished today.

34:37 was my time. pretty damned happy with it. finished 6th (of 6) in my age group :football: but i was happy to run it. feeling pretty proud today. :goodposting:

I always finish last in my age group? How old of a guy are you, Furley? If you're in the 35-39 range, I'd love to run a race with you sometime in the next month so I can actually RACE someone! ;)Seriously, though. Nice work. You should be VERY proud of what you've accomplished.

31. the guys who beat me were a bit older. probably top end of their 30s. fit looking bunch.

:lmao: ...a runner's mentality. As furley noted, I joined him for the 5K race in DePere, WI this morning. That meant a 5:00 am departure, and a lot of construction and traffic coming home ...but it was definitely worth it! It was a great, cool, sunny morning for a race. I finished in 21:45 - ninth or tenth out of the 119 runners, and first in my age group (got a very cool towel!). Miles were steady - 6:55 for each of the first two, and a bit slower on the third, I think. OK for no race-specific training. With a half mile to go I decided to work on a guy in front of me and made up about 50 yards, but we finished on a sidewalk ( :ptts: ) so I didn't have room to totally rev it up and get 'im. My bad. It felt good to race a 5K!Now to important things:1) I'm super-proud of furley! :lmao: He mentioned before the race that he'd run the distance in 38+ minutes some weeks ago and was hoping to hit 40 minutes. So to come out, fresh from vacation with a lot of walking, and go sub-35 minutes is awesome. True, the aforementioned nine-year-old did make furley his #####, but when you think about how far furley has come in the past few months, it was great to see him running a steady 5K. The finish line sight of shouts and cheers for him was neat to see. :pickle: :lmao: :hey: 2) I'm humbled by the work of furley's mom and others at the school where they serve children with disabilities (ages 3-21, she mentioned). They fill a definite need and are clearly proud of their school (including the new pool for which the race was raising funds). :lmao:  to furley-mom. And furley's whole family is cool. 3) Great job to the others who have reported in ...waiting on the Rock!

Good job on the races, folks!

I'm doing a quadathlon today. :loco: I started off with 9mi this morning (holy crap, I've been up for 9hrs already, and it's only about 2pm! ). Would love to post a time, but my Garmin died after 7.25mi (1:15 at that point). Then, I mowed my mom's yard. I think it was already 112 before I started. After staving off heatstroke, I'm currently at work (I've managed to eat breakfast and lunch and checked the scores online so far, so hopefully I'll be getting some work done here soon :) ). In another couple hours, I'll head home to get ready for the SDSU/AzSU game.  Probably will be home before midnight, just in time to collapse in bed after a 19hr day.

wow... you have gotten seriously fast t-m. :awed:Nice work today, and thanks for sharing the info about the race and Furley-mom's invovlement... even MORE inspiring stuff.

Good job on the races, folks! :thumbup:I'm doing a quadathlon today. After staving off heatstroke, I'm currently at work (I've managed to eat breakfast and lunch and checked the scores online so far, so hopefully I'll be getting some work done here soon  ). In another couple hours, I'll head home to get ready for the SDSU/AzSU game. :towelwave: Probably will be home before midnight, just in time to collapse in bed after a 19hr day.
Congratulations, RS. Today, you ARE a quadrathlete.

:pickle: :lmao:  2) I'm humbled by the work of furley's mom and others at the school where they serve children with disabilities (ages 3-21, she mentioned). They fill a definite need and are clearly proud of their school (including the new pool for which the race was raising funds). :lmao: :lmao: to furley-mom. And furley's whole family is cool. 3) Great job to the others who have reported in ...waiting on the Rock!
Man you are a class act, seriously!

34:37 was my time. pretty damned happy with it. finished 6th (of 6) in my age group :lmao: but i was happy to run it. feeling pretty proud today.
I always finish last in my age group? How old of a guy are you, Furley? If you're in the 35-39 range, I'd love to run a race with you sometime in the next month so I can actually RACE someone! :lmao:Seriously, though. Nice work. You should be VERY proud of what you've accomplished.
Weren't you doing a tri today???

no question.i was surprised he came (even though he said he would. Chicago to GB is a haul.) my mom almost fainted when she found out he drove the 200 miles.

(for me) :bag: I forgot to push the dang button at the two mile turnaround , but I did remember to at the 3 mile. From the 1 mile marker to the 3 mile marker was 16:24. So if I split the difference then I did 8:12 for each mile, but I am betting the second mile was 10-15 seconds faster than the third. AT the 3 mile mark I was at 23:50 and slowing. I finished with an 8:40 :bag: final mile.

Thanks D :lmao: Considering my lack of running the last month or so, I was quite pleased with the time - 34:33 and 44th. Glad you were happy with your time - the humidity was a factor in stopping you go quicker.

Yeah... I survived and finished in 1:58:18. I'll try to post a full race report later tonight or tomorrow when I get a chance. I can pretty much sum it all up by saying I would NOT have finished the swim segment without the wetsuit I bought yesterday. My first open water swim. My first swim in a wetsuit. COMPLETELY demoralizing. It took me 11:41 to swim a quarter mile! :bag:
