Haven't posted in awhile, but am still running 5k's every three days. Don't know of any races in the area for the rest of the year, so it might just be a longer training period for next years races
I'm running NYC along with Righetti and at least one other FFAer. I think tri-man was making light of/and reminding me about my own goal #1 that I've failed to meet- get to the starting line uninjured.Go make us proud Tri-Man!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm extremely jealous, but also living vicariously through you. Great to hear that your daughter will be there for you. Have a blast!Is El Floppo running as well? If so, I'm even more jealous! I'll be riding in a 100k event this weekend, but would much rather be running. My race will be a joy ride, as I'm going w/ a friend who rides pretty darn slow, and we anticipate making a few stops along the way (my guess is that we'll have at least one beer; preferably near the end).

Didn't want to miss a chance to wish you all the best this weekend too. I think its very cool you have built the trip around seeing family and I am sure the kick to the finish will be stronger with your own personal cheering section.That's cool. You've got an interesting course for the race - I'll be quite interested to hear about it (bridges, tunnels, sunrises, etc.).I suppose I should add, I am enjoying every moment of every run and race I have had this year. I have beat every goal I have set for myself and think I have spent more time with my wife than any time in our 17 years together as we have gotten after this together (she is a bit nuts about this running thing too, but hers goes towards the "what is a gust of wind blows me and the other runners off of the Ambassador Bridge"). For me, my new attack on running is like everything else I do. I am most happy with an occupied mind. I want nothing more for Sunday than to finish running, see the sun come up on the Detroit River and remember to look up at the finish. But, occupying my mind every step of the way has appeared to work for me and has me prepared for some of those other sub goals, like finishing in 2 hours & 10 minutes or less, with a stretch goal to go sub 2. I think I'd be cheating myself without the preapration and cheating my kids too. I like to think the best of lesson I've taught them, is that anything worth going after is worth giving your best. Maybe I'll become a freer spirit down the road.2Young - go ahead and plan your heart out. Detail your spreadsheets, talk it over endlessly with anyone that will listen. Take full advantage of the expo.Then when the gun goes off, set it all aside and run. Just run. Listen to your body's rhythm that day - keep alert to your pace - be aware of the runners around you - feed off of the crowd. But as the samurai's son says to Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai: "No mind." Let yourself go and be in the moment. You're going to do great!
For me, yes I could imagine beating an hour for 10K - but thats because I've ran before (92-96 approx). 10K PR: 43:46 ( I thinkSo do you or Steve happen to recall your original thought about GStrot's goal at the start of this thread - a 10K in under an hour? Could you have imagined yourself writing the above?Steve and I just ran 5.8 miles in 52:06, an 8:59 pace. Ok, Steve beat me by a few seconds because he can sprint faster at the end than I can. The main thing is that the pace was faster than the 10K race I ran on July 1, and to be honest, I did not run as hard as I would in a race. I don't know if it is because I have been working on my form, or because it is cooler out. Maybe a little bit of both.

Good luck and have a blast with the 100... wait a sec... 100k? Sissy. :IBTL:I've only had one ride in the past six weeks = it should be plenty long for me, even at the speed we'll be going. I'm actually doing the race mostly bc no training gives me the best chance of not getting hurt prior to race day (= goal #1 will be met!).

and I had to spend almost all day on my feet for work. But I ended up breathing easy, running comfortably (my tri-shortened stride is helping keep stress off of the knee, I think), low HR- and it ended up being faster than my expected race-pace.
Good news today... 4m at an easy pace (no splits, Tri-man) to further test things out- no pain.Maybe it's the fart-inducing anti-inflammatories, or the injury imposed two-week-early-taper, but I felt great despite being exhausted -the kid has reverted to only sleeping a couple of hours at a time at nightand I had to spend almost all day on my feet for work. But I ended up breathing easy, running comfortably (my tri-shortened stride is helping keep stress off of the knee, I think), low HR- and it ended up being faster than my expected race-pace.
I'll concentrate on keeping things slower and easy on Friday so I don't push my recovery, and if things go well (painless) I'll do 12-15 on Sunday. Then it's taper for the last two weeks before race-day.Again- none of this would have been possible without this thread... I'll save the tears and hugs for after the race (Goal #2... Goal #2... Goal #2), but I wouldn't even be in a position to limp my way to the start-line without all of you. :grouphug: ....

I am on the mend! I ran (more like shuffled) 2 miles yesterday = my first run in 6 weeks. I'm working on Chi-running, but took it overly cautious as I didn't want to put any stress on my calves prior to my ride this weekend. Zero aches or pains this morning = a one-day taper prior to a slow scenic ride tomorrow. My legs actually feel better today than they did any day prior to yesterday's run. I'm guessing that I'm so used to them being a bit tired, that not running gave me the aches (just like how legs always seem to ache the most during tapers).Busting your chops of course. On the mend?If I tried a 100k at this point, I'm pretty sure I'd end up like my 2nd grade GI Joe, with limbs fallen off lying useless in different parts of my room, and of course the stubble, 6 inch facial scar and kung-fu grip.

Great to hear EF!! Can't wait for the tears and hugs. Take it easy on Sunday. One of the Chi lessons that I'm taking to heart is the relaxation of muscles while running. I am really concentrating on keeping muscles "limp" and it actually felt good. In the book he says the main cause of knee pain is the angle of the foot on the strike = we have a tendency to angle them out (like a penguin) instead of keeping them parallel. Just a thought

Hmmm.... my feet have always flared out some- my old soccer coach thought I'd gain some speed/acceleration if I practiced/forced myself to walk with parallel feet. Never took. No problem Mr. Floppo!Hmmm.... my feet have always flared out some- my old soccer coach thought I'd gain some speed/acceleration if I practiced/forced myself to walk with parallel feet. Never took. My PT thinks it's a tracking issue of the knee. I think it's residue from having badly sprained ankles for 3 straight years which affects the rest of my stride now. Whatever it is- I need to get going with the yoga... sah-wheat! fantastic work furley- sounds like your diligence with the training is starting to really pay off.furley blew the ulmerulfin doors off tonite!best per mile time, best mph, furthest distance. i was positively giddy at the finish. thankfully there was no rain, just a little cool and breezy.
I braved the elements too... slight drizzle and warm/humid. 4m, easy run- but the easy run again went by faster than my expected race pace, and evertying felt good :knockonwood:I'm going to go out and do 12 or 15 Sunday (depending on how things feel).Next thing you know furley will be running gruecd times. Ran 9 miles this morning. I did a quick search and didn't find anything in the Daytona area for those dates. But they don't always add them to the schedules until it is closer to the race date. There is this on the 17th.Darrin & Steve, is there a Florida Running Web Site? Just booked a trip to Orlando Feb 16 - 23 next year for the kids winter break. We tried for the Ocean Walk down your way over Easter, but we were way too late, I wanted to do the Easter Beach Run again. The only day I think we could run, would be Sunday the 17th. We'd be up for a 5K, 10K or maybe even a 1/2.

The expo itself was huge. I haven't ben able to find Cliff's Shot Blocs in Cola so I sought out the Cliff's display. The spokesmodel was nice enough to give me a packet. My race plan is to have a cola, lemon-lime and a magaritta bloc having 2 at around mile 8. Its gonna be hotter than expected so I the magaritta will be available in ase of leg cramps as it has the extra salt. Did an easy 10 this morning (with some nice hills) at 8:05 pace. Another easy 4 miles tomorrow will get me to 30 miles for the week, which is where my mileage tends to fall when I'm base building.Warm? 10 days ago, there was a chance of snow and sleet for tomorrow so the 60s is an inferno. The Shot Blocs are the only thing I can take while running. I tried the Gu route, but I didn't like it at all. I start eating the bloc about and 8th of a mile before a water stop and by the time I get to water I can take a good drink and move on. Magaritta has triple the salt of other ones and does taste like a cheap bar margaritta. If my legs are crampy, I'll do the magaritta. The cola has caffine. There is a water station the 7.5 mile mark which should be about the time i'll need these and a good drink. My sister told me about these, she play semi-pro soccer and they use these in game for leg cramps and more electrolytes than you would get with just Gatoraide.Warm? I ran a short 4.3 mile run this morning - planning for a 9 mile run tomorrow morning, which will be my longest since the 'comeback' (we need a runner emoticon!).

OK, tri-man ran the Madison Marathon this past May in 3:46:38. I checked the online race results and found his name; I'll keep an eye on today's results, and I'll keep you all posted.At least they've got nice weather today.
