Steve and I have signed up for the Jax half in December, but if that goes well, and 2Y2BB does the Jax in Feb, I might try it as well. But I definitely want to get my first one half out of the way before considering others.
Wait a sec... did Darrin just say he's signing up for a marathon? I've got witnesses right? Way to go Darrin!

We'll be holding you to that come February...
Darrin signed up for a half. He may consider a full if the half goes well, but it probably won't be in February. I am also semi-planning a local half in early January.

I would really like to try a marathon sometime in the future, but I would like to get 3 or 10 half's under my belt first. And when I do sign up for a marathon, it will be a fun one, like Dsiney or the Space Coast.

I entertained the same thoughts yesterday about doing a full marathon down the road until I encountered my basement stairs today. The half was enough for me, as I am a bit sore today. I am "pleased" that it appears to be just muscle ache and not any of the joints. Just got back from rewarding myself with a Little Tony's Bleu' Burger with bacon & mushrooms and a basket of fries (shared with my wife). I'll have to discover what this thing called core training is all about.

Trust me, Darrin, that's a very relative concept. ...although RoarinS might speak differently. His series actually sounded quite fun! RoarinS, early in yesterday's race we passed a band, and some guy mentioned it, so I got him excited about the RnR series that you did. :goodposting: While you're not running sub-4:00, you're making the races a neat experience and achieving something special with the RnR series, as attested by the medals for 'em all.

fwiw- here's the 1st timer marathon schedule Righetti posted in his thread (I've been using the long runs only). If you use it for a base idea of how long you'd need to train for the marathon (I started thinking about that because Feb is only 4ish months away), and start at the point where 13 is your weekly long run (where you'll be post 1/2 marathon)- it looks like you'll need 11 or 12 weeks to build up to the marathon.

Still waiting for photos from the race, I found these as an overview: http://adrianplatts.com/jpegs/Detroitv/bikeblog/index.htm

Scroll down to see the bridge ones, they are awesome (to me).

Detroit gets a bad rap, usually deserved due to the mayor and city council, but yesterday made me very proud. Below is a quote from the end of a Free Press Story:

"I had always thought, 'Detroit. Why would I want to do that?' I went to the Chicago Marathon instead. But this was a fabulous marathon," said Vamvounis, 36. "The organization is great, the people are wonderful, and I couldn't believe how pretty it was when you ran through the neighborhoods with all the trees turning. I'm going to recommend this race to every runner I meet."

No running for me today (a rare scheduled "off" day), so I went and played basketball this morning, and I irritated my damn piriformis muscle again! :goodposting:

I don't know if any of you have ever had this, but it's literally a pain in the butt, and I think it starts with my tight hips. Called and got an appointment to see my PT friend at 10:30 this morning. I keep saying how I know I've got tight muscles and how I need to start stretching more, but maybe now I'll finally start listening to myself.
I had and kinda still have a similat ache. I think mine is from driving too much for work as this is when it gets the worst. I had this article stashed in my favorites from back in August when it bugged me the most:http://www.johnberardi.com/articles/traini...n_your_butt.htm

I just want somebody to tell me what pace-group to sign up with.
Remind me:Average weekly mileage over past two months?Length/number of long runs?Pacing of some runs (shorter and long)?
2-3 runs a week. 2x 4m runs midweek, where one is a tempo run and the other is either interval or hills. (8m total midweek)One Long run each of the last 10 weeks, which have been anywhere from 12-20m. I got 2x 20m and an 18m as my longest in that stretch. (20-28m total per week). My tempo runs are around 8:00 pace, give or take due to PTTS. 1/2m intervals I've hit 6:30 pace, but am usually around 7:15. The two 20m runs were 2:51 and 2:53 IIRC- 8:30ish pace. One of them felt great, the other not so much. The 14m run yesterday was at 8:10 pace and felt like I could go on forever (last two miles were sub 8s, but it was all only on the flats). In terms of muscle memory- two years ago (ok- elephant-like muscle memory  ) I was doing about the same weekly mileage plus bike/swim. I PRed my 10k (38:53) and 1/2 marathon (1:32:41) back then as part of either a tri (oly) or bike-run-bike workout (rode to the race- 40m each way- and TTed back). But then there's the knee and the baby and the whole littany of PTTSs...I've got some time (a week and a half) before the expo when I sign up for the pace group- but I'd genuinely appreciate any thoughts on the matter from you guys.

RoarinS, early in yesterday's race we passed a band, and some guy mentioned it, so I got him excited about the RnR series that you did. :kicksrock: While you're not running sub-4:00, you're making the races a neat experience and achieving something special with the RnR series, as attested by the medals for 'em all.
You *did* tell the guy that there will be SIX races in the series next year and perhaps SEVEN the year after, right? They're adding San Antonio Full/Half (inaugural race 11/2008), tho I'm not sure if it'll be included in the medal parade just yet (7th race TBD).I'll give ya the "neat" and "special" points. I look at an individual race, and it's  . But I look at "*** ROCKSTAR SERIES ***" or "*** THE GOOFY CHALLENGE ***", and it's  ! I don't know what I'm going to do once I run out of these challenges. lol I suppose I'll have to make up my own. Maybe run all the "big city" races (depending on how they fit on the calendar) in the same year -- Boston (of course, qualifying notwithstanding), Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, etc. Maybe run a race in every state during my 50th year, leading up to my birthday. Who knows. lol Gotta keep it interesting and wacky.
Well, 12wks = 3mos, so that's about right. I started training for PF Chang's (this past January) the previous October. I used the late-start TNT calendar, and probably started off too hard (hence the I-T problems later), whereas the regular TNT calendar actually started about the end of August.

And Darrin has a GREAT base going into it... seems really possible when you start doing all that advanced math and compute weeks into months.So... we're back where we started- Darrin's doing a marathon!!!!  :towelwave:

Comment: Less than 30 miles/week will create some challenges for the 26 mile race. Be more conservative with your pacing. [spring marathon, I had a number of 45-50 mile weeks; for yesterday, I only had 35-40 mile training weeks. Long runs were the same for both.]
My tempo runs are around 8:00 pace, give or take due to PTTS. 1/2m intervals I've hit 6:30 pace, but am usually around 7:15. The two 20m runs were 2:51 and 2:53 IIRC- 8:30ish pace. Comment: So 8:30ish/mile gives some indication of pacing. A strong 14 mile run gives less of an indication. It might suggest a well-paced marathon, but the risk is it's not supported by a strong enough base.
In terms of muscle memory- two years ago
Comment: No, that's mind memory, gb. From two years ago. It doesn't count and won't help you. Sorry.
But then there's the knee and the baby and the whole littany of PTTSs...
Comment: All of which translate into the training limitations you've faced. So again, be more conservative with your pacing.I'd suggest the 9:00/mile pace group at best. If you stay at that pace, you're under 4:00 hours. That's a solid goal. Anything faster than that is risking a difficult race or injury reoccurrence. If you can pick it up near the end, great. "Those who can't do, teach."

Ok, I mapped out this 15.4 mile run. If I get through January without dying I will try to increase my long runs, starting with this one. If I can do a 20 mile run during training I will sign up for a full marathon.

Edited to fix link.

I'm assuming you can hear the roar of the engines from your house when they are racing at DIS?

19.46 mile

If I can do this run and live I will try a marathon.

As to the time frame, I will have to wait and see.

This run makes sense if you look at it as satellite or hybrid. There is a walkway across the main road to the track.

Oh yea. As a nascar fan it is great. One of my best runs this summer was my first 11 miler. I did it on the morning of the busch race and the crowds at 7am were great. [egofix] I actually had race fans cheering me on as I ran past. [/egofix]

Good pace - must have been those little bursts you put in. Are you gonna run tomorrow?

I am planning on it. V is closing tomorrow so I will be all alone. 5 pm-ish?

Great, nice to see the mind control teaching start when they are young. The Daytona 5K last year was my first ever race, that wasn't to the fridge or buffet.

What was wrong with 15 seconds? Maybe it's 30 but I've never timed it...
Well, I realized that I make my runs public and you don't very often. Saying close at least leaves it a little vague.
I just figured you guys were, um, you know, roommates. ;)
Ummm, NO. NTTAWWT.

;) Last results are out from yesterday, and this time it included my UW (Under Water) Mile when we ran under the Detroit River through the tunnel. I posted a 7:58, which was between miles 8 & 9. :lmao:

No doubt  ... the downhill mile, right? ;)
You know, I dunno  the down hill from the Canada side did feel like forever, but we had to come up on the US side. I think I wanted out beacuse it was hotter than hell in there & I knew there was water on the other side (that and there was a photographer on the up hill and I think I am a bit of a ho when it comes to the camera :bag: )

:lmao: I used to primp and preen (I'd carry an extra ice-soaked sponge just for it) before the finish of all my Tris... only because my first ever Tri, I had snot and Elizabethan levels of caked-on sweat covering my face in all the pics. Big dumb grin covered and hidden behind layers of all kinds of dried-out Precious Bodily Fluids- the damn wife didn't have the heart to tell me I looked like an extra from 28 Days Later.

So :hifive: pretty-boy- I'm right there with ya! .... :bag:

So now that all of my races are over, what do you guys do to stay motivated to keep running? Trying to figure out what type of running to do just to keep the base mileage going. Do you follow a training program just to follow one? I find following one gives me discipline and a goal, but not sure how I would do with it knowing there is no race at the end of it.

Obviously I can just schedule my next race, but don't want to do that right now since sometimes I feel like training is a chore and I kind of just want to run and enjoy it.

I think I am a bit of a ho when it comes to the camera  )
Unless you have a poster sized print of yourself hanging right by your computer you are a mere amateur compared to Darrin
:coffee:
ok, but try and avoid the pics where I am fat and shirtless. Heck, the skinny and shirtless are mildly nauseating. April race on beach

July race on Beach This one looks funny because this cat scratched up the plastic cover before I had it hung. I am to cheap to buy a new frame.

My race vanity wall. This is an older pic, I have more framed numbers and the two awards now.

For all that Darrin's been through to dramatically lose weight over the past couple years, I'll grant him all the vanity-slack he wants for a couple more years to gaze in amazement at what he has become!

I won't follow any formal program for at least a couple months or more. Now's the time to keep the runs slow and easy, letting the aerobic capacity and muscles build and develop. If you don't already, it's good to keep a workout log to help keep yourself honest - you'll notice if you start to let too many days go by. As some have started to say, this is the time to do some cross-training or to use the off-season for strength work and flexibility training. That can be as simple as push-ups and sit-ups or a program of Pilates or yoga (see recent talk of the Yoga for Athletes tape).
