Ran a 10k in June (2 Viewers)

5mi in 47:20 on Saturday. Fell apart on the 5th mile. Note to self: hydrate the night before.

3mi in 26:54 today. Ran nice and easy today, actually felt refreshed afterwards, instead of worn out.

Cycling questions: what are the benefits to upgrading from the "TruVativ Rouleur Double w/GXP integrated spindle" that came with my bike to a Shimano 105 or Dura Ace crank? Since the current crank has no size details, how would I know which size to order? Lastly, would I need to upgrade any other components at the same time to make the crank compatible or is this just a one-for-one component swap-out situation?

3mi in 25:30 today.

Oh, I broke down and got new shoes on Saturday. Brooks Adrenaline GTS 8's. For some reason, the 7's aren't clearance priced (I got my current 6's for half price when the 7's came out, and figured the 7's would do the same when the 8's came out), so I figured what the hell, go with the 8's. I told the guy at the store that I was looking for the 7's because I was watching my expenses due to moving, and he sold me the 8's for 15% off. Turns out he's from Minnesota, so that probably helped make the sale as well. lol

Yesterday and today's runs were with the new shoes. I should put in for a new pair of orthotics as well. Hopefully this will improve my leg/feet conditions, which have been a little "off" lately. Old shoes can have that effect.

Who's up next for a race?
Somebody's got to have an October race on the docket, you'd think. Or is the Fall 50 for a few of us, then some November races (turkey trots ...and lost-Darren's marathon??)?
Looks like it might be me doing the Detroit 1/2 on 10/19. I am using the "Barely Running At All Due to Work Program" to train for this one. Anyone try it? In all seriousness, I think I'll just see what happens on race day. I'm signed up for 1/2s the first week of December & January so this one will just be a tune up. Although, I may take Vegas slow with my wife and renew our vows by going through the run through wedding chappel at mile 5 (there really is one).It got real cold this afternoon and I got a bit excited to run in the cooler weather for a change. Gotta get some work done tonight, but I am running for sure tomorrow!!!

 This is not acceptable, soldier!
:lunges: Read the rest of that post. I'll be well-hydrated come game time! Not to mention, get me behind a cute chick in spandex, and I might not stop running at the end of my legs. :excited: Not many cuties on my training routes, and those that are, are running the other way. :kicksrock:
We'll put fellow team member Tim's wife, Jodi, in the back of the van - dressed in spandex and holding, most likely, a beer or two. You'll be flyin'!

Nah, I already lust after a married woman (she'll be the one driving the van). Unknown cuties out on the course, that's a different story.

####### complications. ##### doctor was too busy checking out my bod and junk...got distracted and left some germs behind. Had a baseball sized lump that had to be drained. Basically they opened back up the wound and squeezed it like a pimple. Then they dug around in there, squirted some cold ### liquid in, and shoved six inches of gauzes inside of me. I'm laying on the sofa with a bandaged color red and a pain like a knife anytime I move. that sucking sound is my fitness level plummeting.

Quick question for you guys. I am running a 5k on Saturday morning. It starts at 10 a.m. I am just curious on what you suggest I eat before the race. I want to have some food before the race, but nothing that is going to cause any problems for me once I start running. I typically don't run in the morning but after work so the morning run is a bit of a change for me. Maybe I am overthinking this. Any help would be appreciated.

You're not overthinking at all, this is an important part. You shouldn't need too much for a 5K, but you'll still need to eat something. My pre-race morning meal is always a Cliff Bar & a banana. I usually have a small cup of coffee to get the system going too (this may be more important than eating). Good luck this weekend and report back on how it goes!

I'd go plain bagel & cream cheese one hour before.

Hey, guys. Haven't posted much lately because I've been so busy at work. Some other goings-on, too, but I won't get into that....

Let's see.....

Did a good, strong 13-miler before going out drinking on Saturday night. I was supposed to run 8:20s, but I felt really strong towards the end, and the beer was calling my name. Ended up averaging 8:11, but the last couple of miles were sub-8, and I probably could've gone 20 if necessary.

Tonight I wanted to watch the Sox/Twins game, so I went to the gym and ran for an hour on the treadmill. Did 10-min w/u then 2 x 10 min Z3 (6:50) with 10 min recovery and the balance Z1 (8:10). Did some biceps and core work, then called it a night.

Thinking I might actually try playing basketball in the morning for the first time since I sprained my ankle back on 7/21. Probably not the smartest idea in the world, but I'm really jonesing to play.....

Oh, yeah. Logged 164 miles in September, bringing me to 1,307 for the YTD.

Goodnight, everybody.

I'll report back. I started running some last summer in order to improve my overall fitness. I am 33 and in decent shape but I used to play basketball a lot and do more physical activities before family and work started eating into my time. I am not hard core like many of you guys but I try to get out 2-3 times per week and run 3 miles. I have always liked running. Ran a 5k for the first time over the 4th of July last summer. My goal was 24:00 and I finished at 22:34. Developed plantar fasciatis right after that and shut things down for a few months so I could heal. I also found some real good orthotics to run with to prevent it from coming back. Started running again this summer and decided to try another 5k. It is just easier for me to go out and run when I have a race to prepare for, or some kind of goal to achieve. I have been running around 24:00 for 3 miles but there are a lot more hills around my house than where I am racing on Sat. I am hoping to beat 24:00 and give a good run at beating my time from last year. We'll see....

Warning :wall:

Got the pleasure of changing my dressing today. Off came the sopping red and sticky gauze. Left was the string hanging out my wound. Picture your chick's tampon string on a heavy flow day after a sex with a fraternity house. Hopped into the shower, gave my belly a push and a stream of red ozzz squirted out which turned to a gentle flow that ran down my junk. Worked the lumps like a teenager squeezing pimples for about five minutes until I couldn't take it any more. Showered up and waited for 10 minutes to dry before the fun part. I had to pull out an inch of the string. Rippppppppp....might as well rubbed salt in it. Freaking 4 more inches left to pull the rest of the week. Of course the red #### began to flow again. New gauze pack and some tape and I'm good to go until tomorrow. :wall:

I'm beginning to think socialized medicine would be a good thing.

What do you normally eat before your afternoon runs? I usually stay away from dairy before a race... but that's just my GI talking.

I usually just have a sandwich, or something light. Just want something in my stomach but nothing that is going to be tough on my stomach as I go through the run. I don't usually eat breakfast in the morning, but I want to eat something before I run so that is why I was asking for some breakfast suggestions.

Any reason you don't have a similar type of sandwich or something light that you normally eat before running? Will you be able to eat the same time in advance before the race as you usually do on your training runs?I hope my questions arent coming across as hostile- baby's been sick and nobody's been sleeping for a few nights, so I'm a little out of it. But race/training nutrition and minutia are popular topics for me....eta: and I think asking for any and all advice in here is a good idea- but with the caveat on the advice given that whatever happens on race-day has happened plenty of times before in training.

Noticed that I looked like a slightly lighter-skinned version of Damon Wayans at the weigh-in during "The Great White Hype" this morning. I'm thinking that the fiftyish beers I had last week between a conference in Denver and football weekend might have had something do with it. Got my fat ### on the treadmill for a five mile run this evening. Rewarding myself with another beer right now.

I don't have a run until the Komen Race for the Cure 5K in November. Then, it's time to start real training for the half marathon in February.

3mi in 27:08 today.

If I had wanted to run a 12:00 pace, I could have run/ :stalker: with two cuties (well, I think they're cuties...this is before sun-up  ). I usually see the more-boobified of the two heading out just as I'm finishing my run, but her buddy was with her this time (I've seen the two of them out before, tho not frequently). Today, either they started early, or I started late, but they ran by as I was stretching out. Their lead was ~100m by the time I started running, and I figured I could chase 'em down and have a little incentive to my run. This was short-lived, as I caught them well before the 1/2mile mark. :goodposting: I continued on, turning around at 1.5mi, and saw them again at about 1.25 (1.75 for me). They laughed at my "stop following me!!" joke, so maybe there's a chance to run with them another time! :scared: I looked for them when I finished my 3, but didn't see them, so I don't know how far they were running. I guess I'll have to look for them next time, and "stretch" unnecessarily until I see them. :goodposting: Then tie more bricks to my feet so I can run at their slower pace.

ETA: added "more" to pre-empt tri-man et al.

What's up, guys? Just an easy 7.26 miles at 8:16 average pace for me tonight. I'm LOVING this cooler weather!!

Schedule calls for 45 minutes tomorrow, 120 minutes on Saturday, and 60 minutes on Sunday, all at 8:20 pace. Raring to go for the Fall 50!

5.59 miles this morning in 45:00 (8:03 average pace). It never ceases to amaze me how much better I run when it's cooler outside like this. It was 34° when I hit the pavement this morning, and I ran sub-8s most of the way without even breaking a sweat. When I think about it, it was cool like this when I ran my 3:10 at Green Bay a couple of years ago, too. This is definitely my favorite time of year for running....

Ran a nice easy 5 miles this morning bringing me to 998 for the year (I didn't hit 1000 until Thanksgiving last year).

I'll crack the 1000 mile mark during the 2nd of my 20 miles on Sunday. So far my long runs have been steady as the weather has really cooperated and it looks like this weekend is going to be perfect for running. I'm still debating my route for the 20 miles. 10 miles out, turn around and come back; a huge 20 mile loop; or do one of my shorter runs multiple times. What do you guys normally do?

I normally do shorter loops that pass my house incase I need pit stop for anything...bathroom, food, water. I have loops that run between 2 and 5 miles so I can mix it up pretty easily. Haven't run anything as long as 20 miles, but in training for my 1/2 last year, I ran my 4 mile loop 3 times. I would imagine it is personal preference though...no right or wrong answer.

I'd actually prefer doing a big, 20-mile loop, but it kinda depends. If it's nice and cool outside like it is now, I don't need to worry as much about hydration. I'll can carry 32 ounces in my Fuel Belt, and I carry another 20-ounce bottle of water, and I'm good to go. If it's warm outside and I need to hydrate more, I'll generally do two 10-mile loops so that I can stop at the house real quick to "re-load."

I usually do 2, 20 milers. The first I do 4 laps of my normal 5 mile run with a "water station" set-up at the end of my culdesac (allows me to drop the water/gatorade bottles off at our house as I pass). For the 2nd 20 miler I use a Camelback and do one big loop. I love this run as I use it as a celebration of the end of my hard work. It's at a comfortable pace, very scenic and pretty much euphoric. I can't wait for my next one! RS: I change my routes by the days of the weeks, so that I'm able to take in the "scenery". I also run early morning, which means you not only have to time when you pass certain areas, but also have to try to time the "pass" near a street light for better visibility. I have become quite skilled at both. __________________________________________________My update:I suck at speed work right now. I did a one mile warm-up, followed by 3 miles of speed (only 7:25's) and then one cool down mile. This should have been a pretty easy run for me, but it was certainly work. Note to self, to not take 9 months off of doing any speed work ever again. Long run = 9 miles this Sunday. My totals for September were:165 miles cycling77 miles running 1,500 meters swimming :pathetic: +4 lbs gained :goodposting:

Between BnB's "stream of red ..." and RoarinS's "boobified" running buddy, you guys are quite entertaining today!

My work week has included a 55 minute swim and three runs.

The swim was great, featuring 10 x 100 yds @ 1:52-1:54/rep with 20 seconds rest (for you swimmers), then additional easy laps to round out the time ...with a foot cramp then a bad leg cramp near the end. Good times.

The runs were a 5 miler, a 6 miler, and today a 5 miler with 5 qtr mile long-striders (one stride per sidewalk square).

20 mile runs: I like to do some repetitive loops just to add the mental discipline of having to keep going when it'd be so nice/easy to stop early. But I'm stuck in the city, so it's not like I have any scenic options.

Oh, and I turned 53 today. :bag:

I may not have the time to map out a 20 miler so it looks like I'll be mixing and matching some shorter runs. Plus it makes it easier to just put 1 or 2 water bottles out instead of 7 or 8 (I tried running with a fuel belt once but didn't like it). Anyone ever try to run 20 miles on a treadmill? My neighbor did it a few years ago instead of running in the rain (wimp). I don't think you could pay me enough to run 20 miles on a treadmill!

Edited to add Happy Birthday tri-man

happy B-day. Mine was the 29th and it sucked. Still leaking red ozze out my belly but i feel much better. I believe the infection is starting to go away and I can actually get up and down w/o using my arms. A belated b-day gift to myself arrived today. Cervelo R3 Sub out ksyrium ES wheels for the zipps in the pic and a dura ace crank for the crappy FSA. Got it together this evening. Bought it used but can't find a scratch on it. The shipping bike shop left a few odds and ends on the bench and had to replace a tube. Need to run it by the shop tomorrow to check the torque in a couple of areas. Can't wait to get some miles on it. the spin around the block was an great taste of what's in store.

Happy B-Day to You. :banned: I hit the BIG 40 Tuesday of this week and had the hang over to prove it. I felt much younger on Thursday after a recovery day. Swam 35 minutes straight today. How do you keep lap count when it gets in to the 60 & 70 range? I lost count with my adult ADD, but I am al but sure I swam more than a mile. Also ran a speedy 5K on Wednesday. I wish work would let up, but I am making the best of it.

Got out there for a quick (meaning short not fast) run this morning. Still building up my endurance after not running for a while. Still, was my best/easiest run over the past few weeks. It was only 47 degrees so perfect conditions. Love this weather. So much easier to run in the cold than the heat/humidity.

Swam 35 minutes straight today. How do you keep lap count when it gets in to the 60 & 70 range?
I'm in a six lane pool with two lane dividers (two lanes per section), so I count by mentally moving through the lanes. One, two (divider) three, four (divider), five, six ...start a new set of six. That breaks it down into manageable/countable increments. 60 minutes in the pool this morning. I'll probably move my bike to the indoor trainer this afternoon so I can ride while watching games on tv. Tomorrow will be a long run of hopefully 12 miles. Three weeks til the Fall 50!

10k in 59:02.

Note to self again: HYDRATE, DUMB BASS!!!! :wall:

I did it under an hour as desired, but I was getting cotton-mouth and running out of energy. Leftover effects from yesterday, I suppose. I didn't sleep well Thursday night  , and yesterday was my last day at work. :blackdot: I was kinda expecting to be taken out to lunch by my immediate group, but I only got a farewell from the department, with cake, chips, veggies, etc. So, about all I had to eat yesterday was mainly two pieces of cake (mmm...), and then a sandwich for dinner (my sons were out, so I didn't feel like cooking anything). My "hydration" last night was a can of soda. So, a very "off" day preceding a long run -- not a good combo.

Tri-man, please be a good father-figure and make sure I eat and hydrate the night before Fall50. I'm not sure when we'll be getting in, but please don't let my only meal consist of cake and ice cream at the birthday party you'll be throwing me that night. :D Yes, it's my birthday on the 24th! I'm expecting a party! Cake! Ice cream! Strippers! Etc! :bag: lol Maybe you can invite all the runners, we'll get them drunk while we tea-total, then we'll win the race easily!! :hifive:

Finished the 5k in 22:36. Ended up taking 4th out of 19 runners in my 30-34 age group. 22:36 is pretty much right at my 5k time from last year and well below 24:00 so I am happy. I finished with a lot more energy this time around. I think I was better prepared for this one and probably left a few seconds on the course. Strange race as I really never had a running partner to push me -- I either had no one near me or I was passing people ahead of me. My prior 5k I was racing alongside another guy the whole time which lead to some friendly competition throughout the race. Neither of us wanted to lose to the other. Running conditions were perfect. The course was real flat as I thought. Chilly weather when I got up but by the time the race started at 10:00 the sun was coming out. I barely broke a sweat during the race and there was no wind whatsoever. Lots of hot and fit women running today as well which was a big plus :lmao: I am kicking myself for not doing more of these races earlier this year. I had a lot of fun --sure beats just doing a run out on my own and I really got a huge sense of accomplishment when I thought how I was not even able to run 5k earlier this year. Since I am in Michigan, pretty much all the races are done until Spring. I am shooting for the annual River Bank run through downtown Grand Rapids which occurs in May. Huge crowds cheer the runners on during the race so it is a lot of fun. The date has just never really worked out for me but I am going to make it a priority next year. If I get bold I may actually try the 10k and see how I do.

15 miles in 2:00:44 (8:03 pace). Was supposed to run 8:20s, but the 8:03s felt easy, so I said WTF. Off now to shower then head to the bar to meet some friends and watch the Brewers try to avoid elimination. Oh, and of course lots of :banned: .

Have a fun night, everyone!

nice job gruecd

I'm still training for NYC marathon.. Have done two 20's already, both right around 3:00 hours.. I ran the Greta Gallop in Central Park and had an awesome race. The weather was perfect, my pace and HR were great and I finished the 13.1 in 1:41.52 which I was totally thrilled with.

Last half I ran was in 1:52 back in July and my PR was a 1:50 back in April or May when I ran a very flat course (brooklyn half). but today was a whole new experience.

My splits were hard to tell because there was no 6.5 mile marker but i stayed very consistent in each mile so I think the splits were probably equal.

7:46 per mile as per the NYRR website which is obviously pretty fast for me for this distance.

Way to go, skillz!!! I note you finished in good shape ...we'll have to work on that (so that you finish with next to nothing in the tank).

Hey, I'm actually a Grand Rapids boy, originally. GR Christian high, Calvin College ...all the Dutch stuff. I've run the River Bank Run a few times, though not for many years. It's a great race. We'll have to talk more about that as time goes by.

eta: I see our Fall 50 team starts at 10:00 a.m. That gives us time for a good breakfast and morning hydration. We should finish, then, around 4:35 p.m. ...a good time to arrive at the beer tent.

Lots of hot and fit women running today as well which was a big plus

I am kicking myself for not doing more of these races earlier this year.
Nice Job!!! So, what was for breakfast? If you haven't found it yet, this is the best site for finding races in MI

As for winter running in MI, you could come over to The D Thanksgiving Morning and run the Turkey Trot. This year they have a preferred corral at the front for those in costume. I'll be trying to go sub 50 in the 10K in a Santa Suit.

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. I ended up eating some cream cheese on a piece of toast (didn't have anymore bagels) and a banana. It did the trick. It was cool after the race because they were serving buffalo wings for the runners so I had a few of those.

Small world. I live in Plainfield Township -- right down the street from Rockford High School. I actually do a lot of my runs behind and around the school grounds. The race today was at Riverside Park. A beautiful setting. I know a few people that have run the 25k for the River Bank so I definitely want to participate next year. If I keep up on my running this winter as I should then I may be in good enough shape come spring time to at least give the 10k a try; the 25k would just take too much time for me to train for though. We'll have to talk as the event gets closer.

I am likely late to the party, way late, but I discovered Athlinks today. This just might be the coolest thing I've found, internet-wise. Put in your name and it'll find just about every race and event you have done and if it doesn't, you can search and capture the ones its missed. It has a calendar, training blog-like thingy and a bunch of bells a whistles. The coolest one, to me is to see your "rivals". Some guy I don't know has smoked me in 7 races. There are around 100 people that have been in 4 or more of the same races as me. I am really looking forward to learning more about this.

I wouldn't be me without a question if someone is famliar with this. I found the tri I did, but for some reason the results stop right before my name. Any way I can pull more results?

Screw that. 10am start means sleeping in 'til 9:45!

Checking out my "rivals", there's this one 51yo woman with whom I've shared the asphalt. I'm 8-0 against her, in the 11 races of mine I was able to find. Eat my dust, woman!!! :lmao: :lmao:
