Have You Looked at eBay? You can get 6 pair for just over what it'd cost you in your local running store (I almost always buy my stuff local and did get my 1st pair there).
Looks like a great deal. Mine are Twin City OxySox, instead of Merrell. Do you know if there's much of a difference?
Dunno. My orginals are the OxySox brand and I cannot tell a difference from the Merrells. Since they are on eBay, I did wonder if maybe a patent was infringed upon and Merrell was ordered to cease using the OxySox name. I wanted to check for giggles, but haven't had the chance. I forgot to ask earlier, do you find you have to Glide the heck out of your feet with these?

No glide needed. They do take some work to get into and out of though.

My Update:

I'm still slow as molasses. My speed work today was supposed to be 7 miles, with 5 "speed" miles at 7:24 in between a warm-up and cool-down mile. My miles went:

Mile 1: 8:51 = @ 32 degrees outside, I needed the warm-up

Mile 2: 7:25 = right where I wanted it, but I had trouble breathing (could have been the cold weather)

Mile 3: 7:24 = still right on pace, but I was working way to hard

Mile 4: 7:27 = no street lights in this stretch, I was just guessing my pace = not too bad

Mile 5: 7:22 = this mile destroyed me, no HR monitor, but it had to be maxed out

Mile 6: 8:32 = I was on pace for the first quarter mile, but had nothing left in the tank

Mile 7: 8:45 = this was the hardest mile I've run in a long time; it hurt

In summary, I was able to stay on pace for 4.25 of the 5 speed miles, but I'm still really struggling with my speed work. I didn't have any food in me; I have a cold; I'm carrying an extra 4-5 lbs; this is the first running race I've trained for in 11 months; the weather was colder than I'm used to; and I'm old (best excuses I can come up with)

One positive thing to add: OxySox Rock!!!!!!!!!!!!! My calves have not felt this good while training for a race in at least 5 years.
If you guys don't mind I'd like some more information on the socks from actual users. They are compression socks, but how do you find they help you? Specifically I guess I'm wondering how your legs feel after running in them or maybe how they don't feel? I tend to experience quite a bit of soreness in my calves if training for a longer distance run. Do you think these would help?

I saw the concern noted about using BodyGlide to help get them on/off , but are there any other concerns? Anybody experience blisters, etc while wearing them? Do you wear them for all runs or just longer runs? I live in Canada and run outside year round, so does anybody have any experience wearing them when the temp drops?

Any and all information/insight is welcomed!

In general, they have eliminated soreness and fatigue during and after runs. I tore my right calf muscle playing basketball about 6 years ago (the typical "slap" feeling in the back of the calf). I tend to get sore after lots of training in the same week and had it lock up there during a triathlon. I got them primarily for cold weather running and used them to do a couple of longer runs (8 & 10 miles) in 20 & 30 degree weather and also raced a 5-mile trail race in them in sleeting conditions. They are very warm, too warm for about 60 degrees and up I'd say. They are very sturdy in the feet. I found they were rough (not overly, but rough) on the feet. I typically Glide my feet anyway. The only slight negative I can find is that they are a bit tight across the top of the ankle. More Glide here and lacing the shoes a little lighter has helped. I can't find my original post on these, but the reason I gave them a shot was based on a recomendation from one of the runners from the Hanson/Brooks Project (the team with Brian Sell) that works at one of the Hanson Stores. He said about 2/3rds of the team swears by the Sox and use them on at least part of each week's training runs. I don't think its voo doo science, I really do think they work.

A woman dropped dead 21 miles in at the white rock marathon today. It was unusually hot and windy today in Dallas. I wouldn't have gotten out on my bike today if you paid me.

Anybody else watch this? The women's champ, Chrissie Wellington, was super impressive.Did a super easy 10 miles with my running club on Saturday morning (9-minute miles), and did an easy 4-miler today (8's). Played b-ball tonight, and we won 88-51 to go 2-0. I didn't play very well, though. Missed a couple of easy shots and finished with only three points, a couple of blocks, and maybe 6-7 rebounds. Gonna run a little more this week, but all at easy pace, and then make a decision about whether or not I want to attempt another 3:10 at RNR Arizona. I've ruled out Mardi Gras, because I'm really afraid that Boston might be closed by then.

I did 10 miles at a stretch for the first time today at gruecd's "super easy" pace. Felt pretty good immediately afterward, but I didn't take in any calories during or after the run and bonked out pretty hard later this afternoon.

Yeah, 29 years old. Sheesh. I'm sure she had some kind of undiagnosed heart condition. Too sad....

Yeah, that was amazing, she is so superior to everybody else it's sick. And she smiles while doing it...something is seriously wrong with that girl.

Did 10 miles myself yesterday, of course your "super easy" is just over my 1/2 marathon pace! After a 10 miler of mostly trails last Sunday, and two 5 milers on trail during the week, my legs were really sore. So probably 4 miles were on trail yesterday, the rest down in the flatlands. It was cold, rainy, and windy, with a headwind on my way back, but I pushed through the whole 10 even though I headed out thinking 8 would be about right. It was good to experience that weather, as while the Angel Island run last January was a perfect, sunny day it's more likely to be closer to what I went through yesterday than that.

Versus had coverage of Escape to Bermuda on yesterday and had coverage of her again. I never realized it, but it appears Versus covers quite a few Tri events. I had DVR realted issues for the Ironman coverage, but was able to catch the last 45-minutes or so. I'm a wimp when it comes to sad movies, emotional commercials and the like. The emotions of the folks at the finish line certainly got me choked up.

I'm typically not a wimp when it comes to stuff like that, and the finish line shots had me choked up, too! Almost makes me wanna learn to swim so I can do one of those someday. I get a total rush finishing a marathon. I can only imagine what it must feel like to finish an Ironman!

I ran the half and didn't think it was bad out at all. The sun really didn't come out the whole time I was on the course and suprisingly the wind wasn't much of a factor. I stopped for water/gatorade a few times which isn't something I normally do, but I'll take yesterday's weather over today's (high of ~30) 10 out of 10 times.

My Update:

I was supposed to get a 16 miler in on Sunday, and unfortunately it was even hotter and windier down here then in Dallas. At the start of my run it was 80 degrees, and the wind gusts were 20+ mph. I sucked it up for 12 miles, prior to calling it quits. I was right at 8:35 pace, but fading fast. I'll make up the miles during the week, and will make my week off run next Sunday slightly longer. From snow to freakin' too hot. What in the hell is going on!

FYI: I'm heading out on vacation tomorrow (to Cali) and won't be back until 1/5. I'll check in whenever possible. Best of luck to all who are racing/training/or just hanging out in here.

Happy Christmas Everyone!

Well well well, The Thread is still going strong

I think it's been about 6 months since I last posted and you'd think there's been a lot of running done since then. Well no, not really. In May, I did something to my right ankle. Being a runner, I thought it would be OK. Then it became to painful to run on, so I thought I would rest it etc. Unfortunately, it didn't improve much and to cut a long story short, my Doctor ended up referring me to a Physical Therapist (which was interesting and not very cheap). But they certainly improved my ankle and I was capable of running again by the end of August (but only very short distances).

I did manage to get some consistent running in during October and though I was nowhere near ready (longest run 6.5 miles), I felt obligated to run the inaugural Daytona Beach Half Marathon (started with a lap of the Track, then went to the Beach and back  ). I finished in 2:00:42 which I thought wasn't bad in the circumstances, but of course, I couldn't help feeling a little ticked off that I was so close to beating 2 Hours!

Not long after that I was back at the Doctor's office with I'm not sure what but he gave me some drugs and I felt better. Then, not 2 weeks later I got the Flu which I am just now recovered from.

My last run was November 16 but I am hoping to get out this week.

Oh, and my wife and I bought a house in September :lmao:

I think y'all are up to date now :lmao:

OK, I'm now giving some serious consideration to running the P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon on January 18. It's supposed to be flat and fast, and I think I can get a relatively cheap plane ticket out of Milwaukee. I should decide for sure in the next couple of days. There are about five weeks between now and the race, so I could go relatively light this week and next, do a couple weeks of harder training, and then do a two-week taper. Thoughts????
DO IT!!! With an hour time difference between AZ and Texas (Houston is the same day), I have a great chance of beating you finished :coffee:
DID IT!!! Signed up today.Roundtrip ticket from Appleton: $359.99

Hotel room (via Hotwire): $72.20

Race Registration: $122.95

Second chance at qualifying for Boston 2009: PRICELESS! :lmao:

OK, you guys are seriously a bunch of slackers around here. Maybe I'll have to disappear like everyone else and spend my time exclusively over on the Runner's World boards.....

Anyway, played basketball again this morning (third day in a row), and did an easy hour on the treadmill this afternoon at 8-minute pace. Gonna stick around 8-minute pace this whole week, and then pick it up next week.

I ran 4 miles yesterday then tried to swim more than 50 meters. I still really suck at it. I'm going to need some professional help if I'm going to do a triathlon this spring.

Did my first swim this morning. I rocked for 25m. The race team had a water polo game this morning so I got in a good hour of various strokes.

Finished our third indoor bike race last nite. We've done a 6, 8, and now 10 mile flat course. My mph has improved each week and last nite I averaged 268 watts over 26 minutes. Hit the gym afterwards. Leg press is back up to 650 for sets of 6-10.

Last weekend I got to play on a track bike at the velodrome in Asheville for 2+ hours. Sunday I climbed (bike) about 2/3 of Mt. Pisgah. Riding a bike thru dark tunnels is very disconcerting. Matter of fact I had to walk 3 out of 5 of them as I totally lost my sense of direction and paniced that I was going to ride into the wall.

I'll be signing up for my first sprint tri on January 2nd. Registration is usually open only a couple of hours before the limit is reached. First event is in April I believe.

I've lurked over there and all I can say is, you'll be back.Good for you for going for another race soon. This last year or so, I have been in "lifes too short" mode in terms of should I do an event or not and am trying to just do it. What is the word from your coach? Are you going to continue to use one and do they think you can pull it off (knowing it doesn't really matter what they think as you are obviously doing it anyway).

Just ask a good swimmer (preferably that can explain the difference between normal swimming & tri swimming). No need to pay a pro yet. It doesn't take much to improve your stroke. Also,

Slow down and develop a cadence. This is when it clicked for me. It takes a song or something else in my head. I not a deeply relegious guy but saying a rythmic Hail Mary worked for me while swimming last night. (Led Zep's Stairway to Heaven & Staind's Falling have worked well too). You'll find it will take your mind off the swimming.

I doubt that I'll continue using the coach, but he did offer to help me with a plan for Arizona (probably felt bad that I didn't make my goal time in Memphis). When I asked him his opinion as to whether or not it's do-able, his exact response was, "Yes, if you are smart , very smart, very, very smart about recovery, if I can do 2 IM in 6 weeks you can do 2 mary's." :popcorn:ETA did 5.69 miles outside tonight in the 10-degree weather at an easy 7:55 pace. There was no wind, so it actually didn't feel too bad. Kinda made me feel like a badass being outside running in the cold like that.

My routines have been pretty much just some indoor bike training, some reps, and an occasional run and swim. Just finished an incredibly busy six week stretch of work (teaching two nights on top of my day job), so I'll have more time to get focused again. With limited pool access and generally crappy weather out, I'll put a heavy focus on the bike over the next few weeks (which includes a number of days off).

OK, now back to the stbx swinger thread ...

Yesterday: 45 minutes on the treadmill w/1% incline at 7:57 average pace (5.66 miles)

Today: Up at 6:00, pick-up basketball from 6:50 til about 8:30, then 75 minutes on the treadmill w/1% incline at 7:57 average pace (9.44 miles)

That's it for the easy running. I'll pick up the pace a little bit for the next couple of weeks, then taper for Arizona.....

First "snow" run of the year today. 6.5-miles in 18 degree weather and all varieties of plowed and unplowed snow. We got blasted with around 10" Friday Night in to Saturday. My back is still not 100%, but I made a go of it and it was tough, but cool to be out in the elements. I picked up a pair of winter trail runners and they did real well both for keping my feet warm and for traction. Got back in the pool on Wednesdy night too, for the first time in over 2 weeks and did 1500 yards doing yard intervals. After the Disney 1/2 on 1/9 I think I am going to just swim two days a week and ride the bike on the trainer now & then for the rest of January. I need a break from running for a while.

I know it never really gets cold here in Texas, but do you guys ever wear tights when running? It's going to be in the thirties quite a few times between now and when I run in my half marathon and I'm trying to decide whether I should pick up some. Seems like I might be OK in shorts, a long sleeve top and a wool cap.

I know it never really gets cold here in Texas, but do you guys ever wear tights when running?
I'm a big fan of the Under Armour tights, but it's gotta be pretty cold outside, and I NEVER wear them without shorts or pants over the top. I don't care who you are, tights don't leave much to the imagination, and I'm really not interested in seeing your anatomy. No running for me today (SRD), and we suffered our first loss of the season tonight in b-ball. At least I got some 25-cent wings afterwards at the bar....

I'm right there man. Ran 10.5 on the treadmill today watching the Redskins/Eagles game. I definitely could have gone several more miles today if I had to. I'm moving my 10 mile plus runs outside as soon as I get back to Austin after Christmas.

You can get running pants (not technically tights) that can be worn in cooler weather (Nike, etc. has them) and they aren't as clingy as tights. I live and run in Canada, so trust me I know about running in colder temps! It is currently 0 degrees F here.

That is one look I'll never understand ....shorts over top of tights.

I'm going to chalk up the lack of activity around here to holiday travel and such.....

Did 6 miles on the treadmill yesterday afternoon, including 20 minutes at 7:00 pace, which is about 10-15 seconds/mile faster than I plan on running in Arizona. The gym is closed today, so I have no choice but to brave the snow and wind chill (-12°F) for an easy 5-miler in a little while.

Have a great Christmas, everyone!

Temps in the low 40s here today. Definitely doing the shorts over tights thing when I go out to run later!!

I have been continuing my walking/fast walking in crappy shoes and flip flops. :bag:

I scored some Christmas cash and I ordered the Brooks switch and some socks like you guys recomended. I should be training in less then a week. I ordered the stuff through Amazon. I will be starting with the couch potatoe to 5k training program. I should be able to skip the first part. I had enough cash to get a heart rate monitor but I did not do it. I was not sure if they were any good?

I figure I better get to running first. :pickle:

*I aint wearing tights man.

Getting some time off this week and next (only working Mon and Tues), so hitting the indoor bike trainer hard ...two hours a day so far; hoping to get ten hours this week and next. [i set some targeted total training times for the year in each tri discipline, and that's making me a bit too focused on hitting my numbers.]

Today was 55 degrees with a pouring rainstorm that started just as I headed out for a morning run. Ran 6 miles in the downpour and got totally soaked from rain and puddles, despite wearing my running raincoat and running in the near-empty streets. Great fun, great fun!

No tights today, but I wear 'em a lot in the cold. :nicelegs:

My 10 miler last Sunday and 5 miler on Wednesday were run in serious downpours, and I experienced unprecedented levels of chaffing due to running in a completely soaked shirt (water RESISTANT <> water PROOF when it comes to my running rain coat, apparently). Think Andy Bernard from The Office after the Run for Rabies. Not fun. And yes, I lubed up, but the rain laughed at my feeble efforts to protect the most sensitive portions of vestigial male anatomy.

With the holidays and a mysteriously tweaked back, I didn't run after Wednesday until today. Happy to report that it was a perfect 50 degrees and clear, no rain and no chaffing. I got some new trail running shoes (finally!) for Christmas and took them out for a spin on my most aggressive 10 mile trail run to date. Some pretty good single track for at least 6 of the 10 miles, including some portions of scrambling over downed trunks, tip-toeing around recently washed out portions of trail, and even clamoring up a rocky section that required using my hands a bit. Great run! Little more sore in the groin and hip flexors than usual, but nothing a good stretch and a little Vitamin I couldn't handle (I hope....we'll see what tomorrow brings!).

Two weeks to the Angel Island 16K. Plan on a couple of 5 milers on trails this week with some extra hill work, probably a 7-8 mile trail run next weekend (more fire road, less scrambling), and then a 5 mile trail run early in the week and a flat 3-4 miler on Thursday heading into the race on Sunday.

I ran 6 miles outside on 12/23 in my new cold weather tights (with shorts). Big fan. I briefly looked at the pants, but I don't like to have a lot of stuff moving around while I run. Need things compact as possible.

Did 11 miles today on the treadmill in 1:39:40.

The next goal is 9.5 miles outside on 12/31.

I also got a new cap, gloves and running shoes for Christmas. My current pair is a 700 series New Balance shoe that I'm not all that happy with. I've had good experience with the NB Zip before, so I got a pair of the 1306s.

I didn't get any sports gear for the holidays (not looking for any ..), like Bentley and SFDuck did. Anybody else get gear or gadgets?

Note to self: Trail-run with SFDuck some day!

While I've only run with someone else exactly one time in my 2 year running career, you're more than welcome to come out with me if you ever get out here to the Bay Area! When I exchanged the moon boot Solomon trail running shoes my wife got me for a lighter weight North Face pair, I also got myself a new Marmot PreCip Jacket, not necessarily for running but with the zippered armpits and breathability I will try it next time it's pouring rain. And it'll definitely come in handy next college football season, as the U of O branded one I've been wearing at rainy games for a few years doesn't hold up to anything more than a light drizzle.

Got a couple of Under Armour ColdGear Mock turtlenecks and a lighter Nike long-sleeve compression shirt. Also got some cash that I think I'm going to spend on some SmartWool running socks.Running update: Had planned on doing 16 miles on Saturday, but it started raining pretty heavily after just a couple of miles, and I ended up cutting it short and doing just 8 miles. If it had been 55 degrees like it was for tri-man, I probably would've continued, but temps were only in the low- to mid-30s, and the idea of getting pneumonia again really doesn't appeal to me.That being said, my legs actually felt pretty tired and heavy right from the start (not a big surprise, considering I trained relatively hard last week despite being only three weeks removed from my last marathon), so it's probably a good thing that I cut it short. Sunday was a SRD, and I actually took yesterday off, too, in the hope that I can get some bounce back in my legs. Gonna get back in the saddle this afternoon with a 60-minute run on the treadmill at 7:40 pace. Less than 3 weeks til RNR AZ, and at the risk of being undertrained, I think I'm going to back off the volume a little bit in the hope of having fresher legs. Time will tell....

Got a North Face tech Shirt for multi-sport & a Nike mock turtle neck tech top for winter running.I have a New Years Eve 4-miler tomorrow afternoon (with the more important kids miler to be a spectator at). My back is still messed up so the plans of finally getting the elusive sub 30-minute 4-miler is going to have to wait. Were supposed to get 4 to inches of snow tonight that might slow me down a bit too. I don't want to hurt anything before the Disney 1/2 on 1/10. I have picked up the running a bit after taking a week off after the Vegas 1/2, but am no where near ready to run a hard 1/2 in a few weeks. I think I can do sub 2 hours, but am not hoping for anything more.

Saw this on the Austin Marathon website. Glad to see it. I've only run a few times without having my mp3 player at "white noise" level and was hoping to not have to change that.

Does the Austin Marathon and Half Marathon allow headphones?

Yes. USA TRACK & FIELD, the governing body of running events, recently amended the rule prohibiting headphones to allow them in non-championship events.

New Years Eve 4-Miler Race Report, with FREE Beer

Conditions were miserable, but we had a ball. The kids miler was at 3:30 PM and the 4-miler was at 4pm. Temperatures were in the teens, with a howling wind putting the windchill around zero. The race was on an island in the middle of the Detroit River, so there was nothing to buffer the wind. There was also quite a bit of snow and ice on the routes. Both kids did real well in comparison to other mile races they had run. My 10-year old son ran it in 8:43 and my 12-year old daughter ran an 11 flat.

As for us old folks, I ran with a couple of buddies and ran kind of easy, running a 32:53. The Downtown Runners put on several events in the city each year and each ends with free beer after and yesterday was exception, pouring pitchers from kegs to the 1000 or so adults that ran the race.

Happy New Year all!!!

Happy New Year!

I started today with a 10 mile run (23 degrees, and a 20-25 mph stiff wind), and added 90 minutes on the bike trainer this afternoon. I toyed with the thought of catching a mid-morning 5K, but wanted to be around to watch the outdoor Red Wings/Blackhawks hockey game at noon.
