Ran a 10k - Official Thread (13 Viewers)

I'm the guy that posted awhile back about starting a Couch to 5K plan.  The good news is that I'm up to week 7 of 9 weeks total now and making good progress in terms of my run intervals and my distances.  The bad news is that my knees have been incredibly sore for the past week or so.  I've been running every other day throughout, but before yesterday's run, I took 2 rest days and although I completed that run OK, I'm still limping around the house 24 hours later.  I've taken ibuprofen which seems to help some, but since I'm not an experienced runner, I'm not sure if I should just try to push through or slow down and take more rest days or what.  My office has a health center, so I plan on stopping by there on Wednesday since I know one of the nurses I've talked to there is a longtime runner.  Any thoughts?
Another thought,  based on something I saw in Runners World.  The knee issue might be due to overstriding, where you're extending the leg/foot too far and really jamming the leg into the ground.  If so, we'll have to get you to land more softly, ideally more on the midfoot (not unlike the foot plant and push-off for a scooter).

A runner got hit by a car and died in my suburb - https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.10tv.com/amp/article/news/local/man-dies-after-hit-by-car-in-dublin-wednesday/530-4cef743d-fd6a-4374-9f9a-168670f4af67

I don't know why anyone would be running on that street at that time of day (45 mph).  There is a sidewalk on one side of the road.  I have never actually ran that stretch and always turn off down a road with a paved path right before then.

Sad and scary.
Odds that the driver was on his/her phone?

I don't recall when strava started putting the runs from one year prior in the personal activity feed, but I dig it. It's a really easy way just to check progress.

The person who died was 200 yards from his home.  He was part of a local running group, so he knew what he was doing.

Short write up a out how running changed his life

@ZasadaI haven't been in here recently - you still on for Miwok this weekend or did plans change?  I looked back a couple of pages and didn't see any reference to it.

Yup, flying out to SFO tomorrow am.  Have an AirBnB in Muir Beach.  Weather looks good (aside from a strong headwind for the afternoon hours).  I don't have my mountain legs, so the climbs will be tough.  But looking forward to (what appears to be) a beautiful course.

Would appreciate tips from the Jedi Master if you have any!

Miwok tracking.

I have a hunch this is like the Bandera tracking:  Logs a start and finish, and that's it. So, pretty crappy.

I have Garmin tracking if anyone wants that, warts and all (only tracks when I have a mobile phone signal).  Can add you to the email notification.

And maybe just for @SFBayDuck (so that he can nerd-out by proxy), this is my pace sheet.

This course has more elevation (3,400m/11K') than Bandera (2,000m/6.6K') so it's going to be harder.  And a short cutoff (15:30).  But the trails look more smooth and more runnable (when not climbing).

Overall fitness is good (smoked my HM PR a while back), and I've logged three 100km+ (60mi+) weeks out of the last four.  Biggest challenge will be the climbs, as pre-Bandera I set records in elevation gain up north.  This month, I've mostly been down south.  So, not nearly the elevation gain in my fitness stable.

I'm just trying to replicate everything about my Bandera 100K success:  Same taper, same pre-race food, same gear (aside from forgetting my race vest in Calgary, and having to cough up $160 for another one  ), same fueling, etc, etc.  Oh and I have a new/better headlamp.

The pressure feels off (maybe a good thing, maybe a bad thing) since I have a successful 100K under my belt, and I'm only running this one because I signed up 2.5 years ago, and my entry rolled (as the race got canceled each year for COVID).  And I hear this is a beautiful course.  I really want to enjoy it.

We're staying at Muir Beach (AirBnB) and my wife will meet ("crew") me there.  Drop bag at Randall.

Lately, I've been really experiencing dread before my races, but I'm strangely at peace right now.  Maybe later today I'll drop into my pit.  We'll see.

LFG!  This is a different breed of race that seems so awesome (read that as terrifying for me)!

You are in ridiculously good shape.  Best of luck...I'm sure you are going to crush it!

You'll be good, it really is a pretty runnable course and the climbs aren't too bad.  The last couple of miles are a little tricky on tired legs as you descend back into Stinson, but shouldn't be a problem for you.

Glad you're getting the West Marin experience by staying in Muir Beach as well, cool little village.  Wish I was there to buy you a beer at the little pub there.

Saw a friend just post on FB that it was super foggy on the course today, almost like a mist.  Assuming the weather is like that tomorrow as well, enjoy the top of that first climb when you first come out of the trees, and the call of the bagpipes that gets louder as you approach.  Such a cool scene.

Can't wait to hear all about how you crushed my time from 2019!  Man I miss being that guy sometimes......

GET SOME!

I'm sure some of you already saw this, but what a poor decision here letting this 6 year old run a marathon.
I've wrote on here before about one of my neighbors has his kids running at 3:00 in the afternoon when it's 95 degrees outside. This is the same guy whose 5 year old daughter was crying as he was pushing her to keep up.

Some parents are just ###-holes.

Hadn't seen it, but in a way it's not surprising.  Even in the smaller, local races I've seen a notable uptick in younger participants over the last 10 years.  This is obviously much crazier than that, but in general I question the wisdom of parents pushing elementary school kids into serious endurance training.  But, for better or worse it seems like all sports have gotten more and more competitive earlier and earlier, and it just leads to this unfortunate ratchet effect.

Coming up on 17 miles done, approaching Golden Gate Bridge. Maintaining same pace.

The stunning views are costing him some time :)

So far so good.

Almost halfway through, coming up on 29 miles.

Got a message that he's way ahead of what he planned somehow, which is a good thing.  He's feeling good.

Go get some, BMF.

Through 41 miles, just over 9 hours (13 min/mile pace) per Garmin tracking.

Over 53 miles in. Slowing on last downhill but still WAY ahead of expected pace and time. Less than 10 miles to go.

Dig deep!

Sorry had family stuff today so just checking in. That last few miles back into Stinson is pretty tricky on tired legs, but sounds like he’s having a great day!  Bring it home!
