Ran a 10k - Official Thread (10 Viewers)

Heart slipped back into sinus rythym last night around 8 so I doged the scheduled shock treatment this morning.

6M this morning 7:56/137. After three days off I figured my legs would feel great but they really didn't, took longer than usual to get loose. And my feet felt like bricks, definitely overdue for new shoes. I'd planned to run an easy 5, having to get back to the house in time to drive my freshman daughter to her first XC practice, but decided after the first couple to go 6 so picked it up a little.

Strava is kind of bugging me with their distance tracking. I ran 6.09 this morning and per usual they rounded down to 6 even. On my Saturday run I went 5.04 but Strava had me at 4.9. #### you Strava! In both cases they added the extra 20-30 seconds onto the time for my first mile, which I hadn't noticed before but maybe that's where it's always gone? So today's 8:28 first mile (as reported on the TomTom site) shows up as 8:55.

There's a 5 mile race tomorrow evening at 6:30 in Hingham, a pit stop on the route I take to the beach house. Working on a plan to stop off and run that on my way down. Would be good to get another data point to figure out a reasonable HM goal pace.
Glad you're back to normal!

GL tomorrow!

Heart rate guys, do you use just strict percentage of your max or use one of those heart rate reserve formulas? My run yesterday really has me spinning about what my perception of "easy" is when I'm not checking my monitor. Thinking I need to recalculate my zones. Also, it was interesting to find Pfitzinger's ideas about the proper training zones since I'm following his plan. I was surprised to read that he had long runs between 75-85%. I guess I've typically been on the low end of that. Nice to know that I got a lot more freedom to run faster when I feel the need.
I've been going by the zones shown by my test.
What test? Explain.
I took one of the aerobic tests a few months back, posted it here. Zone 2 was up to 150, so I go with that whereas MAF would be 146 now. Honestly I don't use HR much with speed work, that's effort based training, though perhaps I should change that?

News, Good News and Great News

News - another solid week for me. Only 1 swim but I got in 3 runs and did the trainer twice and a couple of lifting sessions.

Good News - my bike is now fully functional! My neighbor is AWESOME. He helped me work on it and gave me lots of recommendations and tips. I got it working and took it for a very short spin this evening. I plan to go on a ride tomorrow for the first time in 8 years. :oldunsure:

Great News - AAA Jr. is back on the cross country team! He apparently missed it after missing a couple of practices. He told me he wanted to keep it up. We talked to the coach and explained the situation before and then now and he was super cool with it. It's just the JV team and they don't have any meets until late September so he didn't miss much. I did explain to him you can't be wishy-washy and he's committed the remainder of this season and he's cool with that.

I actually got to take him to tonight's practice and ran with the team. It was cool - most of those kids put me to shame - and I enjoyed getting to run with my boy.

Yeah - that's scary stuff Nigel - I'm sure you are used to it but I'm sure it gives you some anxious moments. GL if you do get the race in.

today's run helped me realize I'm underrecovered and sleeping like #### all week impacts training.

Getting ready for 10 weeks of MAF, reset that base.

You're coming off a pretty great race though. I wouldn't be too hard on yourself.

What's your goal for the race tonight, Nigel?
Would love to go under 35. I'm leery though, I rarely run in the evening and the few times I have recently have not gone well. Biggest issue is what to eat when today so I'm not overcome with hunger a few miles in, which is what often happens on anything but morning runs. I'm thinking a bagel a couple of hours before and a gel before the gun.

Don't sweat the hunger. You got more than enough glycogen stores to handle a 35mins race.

You're not going to find any better August weather - GET SOME! :excited:

Eat 90-120 minutes before and then just run really fast. The faster you get done the faster you can eat.

Based on what I've seen from you so far, you got a great shot at sub 35.

 make sure to eat but not overeat before the race. With evening runs I think you're more at risk of stomach cramps and indigestion.

I ran that race earlier this month at 6:30PM and I think I ate just a quest bar and an apple about 90 minutes before the race. No issues.

Really solid 10-miler yesterday afternoon. Temp was 70ish but not humid and there was a nice breeze. Started around 8:00/mile and worked my way down, feeling pretty relaxed the whole way. Dropped it down the last couple miles and hit 6:59 for the last one. Overall average around 7:42 IIRC.

Hoping to get out this afternoon for 18. We'll see how that goes...

Decision time guys!

Which race should I sign up for? I'm doing a trail 50k Dec 31, and IM CHOO 70.3 in May.

http://runchattanooga.org/rmm/

http://lakemartin100mile.homestead.com/

part of me wants to do the 100, part of me doesn't want to put that kind of time in.
Run the HM.
Why the HM instead of the full?

I do like the idea of doing two HMs. Morning and afternoon.
Training for a full in the dead of winter after having already trained for a 50K right before that doesn't sound like much fun. The HM would be way more fun.

And a 100 miler? I don't like driving my car 100 miles! ;)

fair enough. Plus with IM CHOO two months later, it would be more inline with that race.

Still, there's something appealing about that century run...

I have to sweat something Ned, it's what I do. Weather is f'ng perfect though, and course looks great - a flat trail-like run through the woods in a park, but mostly on paved paths.

Will report back when finished.

I've really been struggling with motivation lately. The inability to get myself to commit to a race is a big part of it, for sure. There's a 100 miler in November my girlfriend said she'd crew me for, and my daughter could be along for the ride, and while the challenge does the course doesn't inspire me. I could do the same 50 miler I did a couple years ago, but I was so fired up for that back then that I'm afraid I'd be disappointed in my effort/result this time. And all of this lack of inspiration = a lack of discipline that has me about 10-15 pounds heavier than I was going into my 100 at this time last year. I'm still getting in pretty much my normal miles and 3-4 hour long runs each week, but just something lacking for me right now.

I didn't even want to go out this morning, and stalled for awhile. Finally decided to drive 30 minutes to my favorite local trail and just get an hour in, and feel better now. But tough lull.....

I'm just curious, how much driving to trails for training do you usually do? I'd struggle with a half hour car ride too.
On weekdays I hit the local trails which are within 2 miles - and yes I usually drive that instead of running on the road to get to the trailheads! But they're all within 5 minutes, with three different trail sections I can hit depending on what I feel like. Within 30-45 minutes I can get to any of the major trails in Marin including Pt. Reyes, Marin Headlands (above GG Bridge), Mt. Tam, etc, which I will often do on weekends, just because of the variety and scenery. And then there are other trails all over the East Bay and Peninsula that are 1-2 hours away that I only run during races.

Today I decided to drive the 30 minutes to Fairfax because I needed something a little different than my normal, local trails to motivate me just to get out. I lived in this town for 3 years and really miss the trails that were within 2 miles of my door here, so I try and get back to them on occasion.

Mom's funeral was last night. Now we drive up to St. Louis for burial on Monday. Weather has been nice here, it was 66 for my run this morning. Hoping Missouri weather is nice too.

Brain bit off more than the body could chew. Knocked out another 10 at 7:51/mile, but I was losing steam at the end, and my hip flexors and calf muscles were tight.

Hoping for cool weather weather for my pacing gig next month. And at least my legs will be fresh.

With Sand, Fubar and others in here I'm almost embarrassed to bring this up but I did a 5+ mile ride this morning. Just wanted to get out and get my legs under me and do about half the distance of my sprint. The elevation on this ride was greater over 5 miles than my 13 miles will be so I'm completely confident in finishing and won't be dead for the run.

I'm not really sure what to expect - I just want to have fun, finish and see where I end up.

Cycling is awesome. Look forward to seeing how this turns out for you. You should have no problem finishing the bike. Running after the bike is what feels odd for most if you haven't done it before.

I've been through this recently. My heart is there with you. I wish I could say things get easier, but wow I still miss her.

Duh.
No joke. I can't hang out, have a few drinks, and stumble...err...pace a runner in a bloody HM, now can I?

What kind of decision is this? Where is the compassion? Think of the pacers, man...
If You're volunteering to pace the 100, I'm on board.
If BnB would get his ### down here and run this one or Pinhoti I'd pace him, too.

Let's clarify - I'll pace a section of this. And a section <> 50 miles. :P
