Ran a 10k - Official Thread (8 Viewers)

Don't you just love waking up to a 150 SI? My easy morning run was just miserable. :ptts:
We got lucky here. It was 72 degrees last night when I ran. Supposed to be 65 here today. In July. :excited:

This is really, really rare here. I just wish my dang stomach would cooperate.

AAA, as you add longer runs, those will really burn off some pounds. Keep at it! Fun to read of your progress.
Thanks. It's been fun although I had a little setback last night. My 2 boys and I went up to the field next to the playground in our neighborhood. It's a really large field and folks go out and play soccer or flag football. We decided to go run sprints - I've done this a couple of times in the last 6 weeks so I didn't think much of it. It was hot too around 6:00 so we did only a few warmpups jogs end to end. We get ready to do the first sprint, I yell "Go" the boys take off and I pull up lame immediately. Now in my mind I didn't push any harder than a normal run/sprint and it felt like my hamstring cramped immediately and wouldn't let go. It was an odd feeling and not like a pulled muscle. So, I don't know if I tore it (possible and what I'm feeling is the pressure and swelling) or I had the worst cramp in history. Because of how it felt I thought it would release if I warmed up even more so I kept walking. Standing felt fine but certain flexed positions felt like a cramp. Abandoned the workout and went home and rested. This morning it's still hurting so I assumed it's a pull/minor tear. I'm hoping it will feel good enough to keep doing the indoor trainer and maybe swimming. I expected some minor aches and pains along the way so I'm not going to let this stop me but it's still very frustrating.

Ugh. Watch for bruising around or just below where it hurts. Tell tale sign of a tear.

So I noticed when looking at my run on Strava that there was a .4 mile segment through a forest preserve that must be some type of public Strava segment. (My slow jog qualified as 7th fastest!) Kind of cool. I guess I'll have to sprint that next time. I assume users can set up public segments? Do any of you #teamstrava guys do this?

Yeah, anyone can add public or private segments. It's one of the best things about Strava, IMO.

Around here, there are a lot more biking segments (and folks riding them) than running. A lot of my segments I'm the only one or one of just a few. It's still nice to see when I run a PR on a certain segment.

In the 50s in the morning out here. My hands got cold. I wished that I would have worn gloves.
That's nuts. How long are you guys going to have those cool temps?
I'm super fn jealous.
It wasn't that cold, I think Juxt just regretted a chance to make a fashion statement by wearing these.

If it makes you feel better, my runs this weekend will be in the 80's with a dew point in the high 70's with all the moisture we have in the ground.

I like the Matched Runs feature, but wish I could transfer all my running history stored on garmin connect.

I love the segments. I'm not out trying to beat other people, because I'm slow and there are elite/professional MUT runners all over The County, but they are great for tracking your own progress. For me running on trails and just using landmarks, it's great having the 1.7M, 454' climb that I do my tempo efforts on tracked. I don't have to worry about hitting lap on my watch or anything else, Strava just automatically groups all of those efforts together for me.

I noticed a couple other segments and I'm sure I'll notice some others as I run my various courses. Unfortunately I will probably not be able to resist trying for the best times on all of them. :bag:

Yep - I have one running segment that I've done 197 times now. I can get a pretty good dial in on how things are going by seeing how the present run falls in line with the population.

AAA - oh no! Fingers crossed that it's not too bad and heals quickly. 2 steps forward, 1 step back ...
Thanks tri-man. I was pretty bummed all day while at work. Normally I take 2-3 walks during the day to get some steps in but the leg was still hurting today so I skipped those. My shingles rash is basically gone so based on what the doctor said I went and swam. Did a half mile of dead legs swimming. Raised my spirits some. Leg felt so-so while swimming but I feel confident I wasn't making it any worse. Going to keep icing it and wear compression shorts.....I won't even consider jogging must less running until it's fully healed.

Back on track tonight. 6.09 mile easy run, 10:07 pace, 149HR. Getting close to being in the 9's for my easy runs, so a good progress run tonight. And my stomach seems to be back to normal.

The 65 degrees at the start was glorious.

Might need to check out the cheaper hokas on running Warehouse, thanks.

Coupon code please.
I think I used runblog10, but I had just googled it.

So I feel like I may be finally getting to a decent place mentally for my easy/long runs. I ran 10 miles this morning and averaged a 8:59 pace and managed to keep my heart rate under 150. Considering a suck index of 150 again, I'm really pleased with that. Doing my easy runs around 9ish minutes a mile is something I can handle. Obviously I'd like to do them faster but at that pace I don't feel like I'll be passed by an elderly walker at least.

This is exactly what you need for a BQ.

Curious - what's your least favorite workout? You know, the one you benefit from but hate doing (hate might be a strong word but you know what I mean)

Right now mine is anaerobic threshold. As discussed yesterday, starting worth a SI over 150 sucks anyway but I've detested it ever since I've started MAF.

9 minute warmup, 30 minutes at zone 4 (Joe Friel's Z5), 6 minute cool down. I couldn't stay under a 7 minute pace for the last 10.

I hope so.

I think the key to these runs, especially when the weather is crappy, is to start slow. Like a minute a mile slower than you hope average. That when you can speed up naturally and gauge a proper effort. Going out too fast can make these runs miserable by the end.

Mid-week MLRs for me when they're 12-15mi. After a couple weeks of these, they tend to turn into big time grind.

I started to put the Pfitz 70/18 on an excel spreadsheet yesterday and those long runs on Wednesdays were the most daunting part of the plan.

I dread marathon pace runs the most, followed by tempo runs. I guess I am kind of weird in that I really enjoy the mid week runs of 12-15.

Looking ahead, those easily could become the worst for me too. My mileage is small this summer but I'll be ramping up big come this fall. Just not real sure how the time will look for those right now.

The most daunting but the second most important (to the Sunday longs), IMO.

 you're a nut. I love the tempos! Unless I bomb them... :topcat:

With a 144 SI predicted for the 5K on Sunday and feeling a bit run down, I don't have any huge aspirations other than getting in there and racing whatever chumps end up around me. Anything around 19:00 will be a success, IMO. The real excitement is going to be the kids. This will be their first ever 5K races for both of them (8yrs and 6yrs old boys).

I'm a terrible dad and will run my own race - they'll start out with my wife at 9:45ish pace and then I'll come back for them after I finish. :bag: If one or either of them wants to speed up by then, I'll take them along. If not, I'll run with all 3 of them to the finish. I'm about 90% certain the 6yr old will be able to break 30 and beat his older brother; kid has a killer motor.

Yeah, I realize that they are exactly the kinda runs I need to improve. I guess that's why I dread them so much. It's a weakness.

I'll race your 6-year-old any time, any place.

Good luck to the whole Flanders crew!

My 7 year old is older than your 6 year old. :boxing:

Good luck racing Ned and family.

I am racing a Quarter Marathon on Saturday, strange distance but they had to modify the course on a existing 10K and it became a quarter. I am surprised by how much fitness I have been able to maintain from my Boston training. My pace vs HR has looked good for over a month now and last week's 3 miler was encouraging.

The weather forecast looks as good you could expect for a July race and there are cash prizes so there should be plenty of competition. I don't know what kind of pace I will be able to maintain, but I should be able to crush last year's 10k pace of 6:33.

I don't have any chance of winning cash, but I could win a pie. The top 4 in each age group win a pie.

Chief - glad you're back in action.

Hang 10 - glad you're getting comfortable with some easy runs.

FUBAR - for me, I love/hate mile repeats.

--

Caught a late swim yesterday, pushing some speed on some back and forths in front of our cottage. Ouch - a wind-sucking good time. Today was a 14 mile run with 6 miles at 8:00/mile (160HR), a short rest, then 3 more at 8:00/mi (164 HR). I was spent. More good times!
