Ran a 10k - Official Thread (22 Viewers)

I need to get on the Strava train.

I had a solid 6M tempo this morning in absolutely glorious weather here in the Boston area.

9:04/120 (9:11)

7:54/142 (7:31)

7:47/149 (7:37)

7:11/153 (7:01)

6:34/163 (6:50)

8:16/153 (8:33)

46:44/7:47/145 total. This is an out and back route, gradual 100 feet up on the first two tempo miles, back down the second two.

In parentheses I put my times in for when I did the same run two weeks ago. Exactly the same 7:47 pace overall but ramped up the tempo a little slower this morning. That 5th mile was the fastest I've done in a long time though, and I came out of it not feeling like I was going to die.

Really enjoying Strava with so many FFA'ers on it. It's cool seeing everyone's workouts pop in before most of the country is starting their work day. :hifive:
I haven't gotten to that point yet. I'll charge my watch as needed but don't plug it into the computer too often. I also log weights and swim into mapmyride, but not strava yet. Maybe I'll transfer at some point but I don't want to lose my previous workouts. So for now, only my runs and rides name it there and not all that timely. Today is an off day for my health assessment (army stuff).

That's what nice about the Garmin. I just lay my watch down on my desk by my laptop after a run and the ANT stick automatically uploads to Garmin Connect which automatically transfer to Strava. #teamgarmin

My garmin has bluetooth that automatically links with my phone and uploads my run all around the intrawebs without me doing a thing. Technology.

I might need to check this Bluetooth thing. The dentist didn't mention it.

Ned, I assume you were using the MySports site where your TomTom runs were uploaded to, is there a way to transfer them all to Strava?

I bought one of the first watches, so MySports was a pretty crappy site. I jumped on Strava almost immediately. You saw where you can have the MySports Connect will auto-upload to Strava for you?

Not sure how to bulk upload other than maybe copying the files that are downloaded to your PC (click the folder icon in your MySports Connect).

I am really enjoying seeing everyone's updates on Strava, but is there a way to change the categories in "This Week's Leaderboard". It would be great if we could see distance and avg pace similar to this group.

Maybe there's only 5 columns available? That might not work well for our bikers.

Ooooooh, that's cool we can edit the columns. I'm assuming Sand will have to do it since he's tagged as the admin.

Like anyone cares about bike riding. Should I go back and manually upload all the times I rode my bmx before I turned 12?

 should I manually upload the time I won the mile in 6th grade gym class?

Only if it's a PR.

Also, I was joking in case anyone couldn't tell.
 Funny enough, I'm considering riding instead of running this afternoon for recovery. I am trying hard to work in various different cross training (which I'm terrible at doing).

I've dusted off my planking, pullups, pushups, etc routine. Hard to mix all this #### in, but it's worth it. I hope.

Yeah, cross training ain't as easy to fit in these days. I'm trying to do at least 2 days of strength training. I think the only days it's possible is on my 5 mile recovery days.

Yep. I may randomly do something on afternoons I feel good after an MLR, but generally do it on recovery days. Otherwise, I may tear a groin or something.

Kinda sucks though since, y'know, technically we should be recovering on those days. Whatever...I think it's better than the alternative. I do give myself one full day off a week though.

You know, thinking about it, maybe I should set up a FBG#teamgarmin Club on Strava.

:D

oh yeah, I almost forgot to add my 30 minutes of racquetball with my wife on Sunday. Any time I can get her to play with my balls is a win.

That's my biggest challenge right now. Trying to balance an Olympic Tri in a month, a century ride in September, adding in weights, getting to the pool 3x / week, and building a base for a century run in March, plus starting a new job. plus time with the kids and wife. :tinfoilhat: We all need 30 hours in a day.

Yeah, I can only imagine how much more difficult it is to get in the weight room when you're training for a tri.

a century ride in September
"All you can eat" one?

I'll look into this.

Just preordered the Garmin 520. Live Strava Segments.

Strava overload. :headbang:

Looked into this. They only have predefined layouts - running, cycling, and triathlon. I have it on tri at the moment.

Life is a mess. Mom has been in and out of the hospital since we took her on the family reunion trip. Can't keep her hemoglobin up. She has received 5 units so far and is getting two more tomorrow. Then a trip to a hematologist to see WTF is up. Bets of all I really let loose on a hospital employee today who was insisting she needed to come back in for typing (even though she has already received five units in the last seven days). WTH changes in seven days?

Anyway, I got in 3.8 miles this morning in 156 SI (81 degrees, 75 DP at 6am).

Sorry to hear. Hang in there man.

Ugh, sorry man. Glad you can get a bit of running in to help level yourself.

Or become a professor. I'm still busy with the transition to the new gig, but life's getting easier and less stressful ...a few more weeks and I'll be fully into the new, less-structured routines. That said, my recent training has been poor ...more just running than training. Helped moved furniture last Saturday (MIL went into a nursing home with her dementia and falling) and then ran on Sunday ...legs were really sore, and after the run, I realized that I'd strained a glute. I had a real sore butt for a couple of days. I tried running today, and suffered through one slow mile with no leg extension due to the glute. I'll just take it slow until it heals and try to gear up big time by mid-August.

You guys run weirdly shaped routes.
 I noticed you run nice clean squares.

I've managed to mix together a 5mi loop between our neighborhood and the next one over. It just happens to be a series of smaller circles. It's totally a mental game to help the time go by, but also helps to be able to knock out 5mi before the sun comes up. I refuse to run on the main roads in the dark.

Thanks, guys. I am at the hospital with her now. She's getting two more units. Gotta figure out what is causing this. It's really hard since she has early Alzheimer's. Either my wife or I have to be with her at all times in the hospital because she can't remember anything. She remembered her blood type but could not remember if she had breakfast.

I might get a short run in tonight, although the heat is ridiculous in the evenings.

Good luck man. Having gone through a health issue with my pops last year (fell and hit head -> stroke -> brain surgery ->3 months in a hospital -> several months of PT/ST/OT at home), I feel for you. It's tough being at this age now for me and alot of my friends (early 40s) where our parents are starting to have some significant health issues. Hope you're able to squeeze in those runs and time for you that keep you sane, I know time on the trails was key for me. Hell, when I drove my parents from Cali where the accident occurred back home to Oregon, I ran loops around a hotel parking lot on the side of I-5 for 25 minutes one morning because I knew that, mentally, I just needed to.

7.31 miles last night. Suck index of 146, so not bad. Intended to go out as a tempo run, but decided about halfway through my mile warm up decided to run the next 5 at my marathon pace goal, which is 9:07 pace. (my marathon goal is 3:59. )

Mile 1: 10:10 pace. 146HR

Mile 2: 7:53 pace. 165HR. Lots of downhill here. Was feeling great.

Mile 3: 8:48 pace. 167HR. More of a normal up and down terrain here.

Mile 4: 8:56 pace. 169HR. Normal up and down, but I'm definitely at the bottom of the valley here.

Mile 5: 9:16 pace. 172HR. This mile is pretty much all uphill.

Mile 6: 8:58 pace. 172HR. Back to a normal terrain here.

Mile 7.3: 10:46 pace: 167HR

Overall a pretty good run, especially at that suck index. Very happy here. I'm starting to feel good about my goal. I also had an easy run on Tuesday that was a 10:01 pace at a 150HR, so I'm so close to being in the 9's on my easy run. Very slowly making progress.

Chief - Did you submit a qualifying half marathon time to get into the highest start corral you can for Chicago? If not, I recommend that you do. The race can get crowded.

Ran 4 miles this morning, with mile 1 being a warm up mile and the next 3 sort of seeing how quickly I could run a 5k. I pasted some links with my splits below, I averaged 7:13 for the last 3 miles. As you can see, the elevation over miles 2-4 weren't in my favor as I had more uphill than downhill. The last .2 miles really sucked. I think the extra uphill stretch cost me about :15 or so total vs. just running on flat ground. I think I'll be able to break 7:00 / mile for a 5k cancer run I've signed up for on 8/1. My biggest problem with the run this morning was I got out of bed at 6:15 and started the run at 6:44... usually I like a little more time to wake up.

Ran 4 miles this morning with the last 3 being 7:15, 7:13, and 6:55 for an avg of 7:08 and total 3 mile time of 21:23.

I think I can get to 6:45 / mile and hit 21:00 for the 5k I have coming up 8/1. It is a second annual 5k in my wifes home town, which is a close-knit community of 13,000 in central IL. The 5k is for a kid who lost his life to cancer at age 26. My wife is 33 and was diagnosed with stage 3B colon cancer in March and we were personally asked by the family hosting to attend so there will be enough emotion and adrenaline that, hell, I may do even better. Today definitely wasn't the best I can do.
