Ran a 10k - Official Thread (4 Viewers)

Not sure if they still do this, but when I ran it, everyone looked way over-dressed at the start of the race. Turns out, there is a clothing drive of sorts, where you throw your sweatshirt/sweatpants on the ground right before the race, and people come around and collect them to take to the local salvation army or homeless shelter. So don't be afraid to wear extra clothes while waiting in the corral. EDIT - as long as you're willing to donate them (or have them thrown out if they don't do it that way any more)
:goodposting:

If you have a throwaway sweatshirt or something in your closet, now is a good time for it. Much better than standing there shivering at the start (low 50s can feel pretty cold when your'e just standing there), and you definitely don't want to be overdressed once the race gets going.
for NYC, I went to Kmart and bought something for $10... left the tags on it, so that somebdoy would get a new sweat suit.

You two aren't meeting before the race? :penalty:
I just figured he wouldn't want to be seen with some cooter wearing camo running gear from Kansas. :kicksrock:
Everyone loves Kansas.Make us Jayhawks proud!
I actually have a Jayhawks running shirt I was going to wear. I'm opting for the Royals running shirt since they are in the playoffs.
This has probably already been discussed in here. But just wanted to point out that while it seems like a small thing, what your shirt says can have a big impact in overall race enjoyment. A lot of people do their name. I went to UGA so I always wear their apparel. A well timed "Go Dawgs" from a spectator is a huge lift during the race. Also I often have other alumni chat with me during the race, which can be a nice distraction.

Royals shirt may do the trick, since, as you pointed out, they are in the playoffs. But I would think of you have a close connection to KU, the college ties typically run a bit stronger.

So, for all you guys who have run Chicago, what time do I need to be down there? I'm in wave 1, corral D, which takes off at 7:30. My brother is going to probably drop my wife and I off somewhere near there and we'll walk in.

Just trying to plan a little bit.
I'd say to shoot for 6:30-45. Traffic could delay you, as could the crowds. Where are you coming in from? I might be able to suggest a sneaky/alternative route.

BTW, remember the idea of a black garbage bag with head/arm holes and a Gatorade bottle. You'll be standing nervously in the shoot for almost 30 minutes and likely need a final pee.
I'll be coming from Libertyville, so any help coming through the back door :oldunsure: would be helpful. And yes, I'll be getting dropped off.

And planning on the garbage bag and the bottle. Already in my pile ready to be packed.
Tri-man might have a better idea and I'm coming from the west not the north but I get dropped off here. Early enough traffic isn't bad at all. I'm not sure how bad it gets a little later.
 Yup ...take I-294 down from Libertyville, then catch I-290 (the Eisenhower) directly east into the city. As you get into the city itself, it becomes Congress Parkway and you can get off where Juxt points out. Easy to turn right on Michigan Ave. and either park somewhere west of Michigan Ave. or loop back to Congress Parkway. (I-290 offers a great path in and out of town that morning. For spectating, folks can head south on State St. and either cut west on Roosevelt Rd. or go way south to around 31st St.)

Sorry I can't come cheer you guys on! ...the little matter of my son getting married in SW Michigan on the afternoon of the 10th.

Four fields for my Garmin on the first screen and I usually don't toggle. Usually use total time, total distance, current heart rate, lap pace. I'll probably will manually hit laps (thanks Grue!) but want lap pace in case I forget or don't feel like hitting it again. Any suggestions for changes?
Young eyes that can read that. :finger: They need a Siri-like GPS watch that verbalizes the data. Oh, wait. I have a bad ear on my watch-wearing side. dammit :kicksrock:
This is what you need, Tri. Speaking of watches, this is a great deal here - Garmin 610 with HRM for $90.

On my end, just plodding along. Hurt myself running again (shocking no one, least of all me), so back to riding. First night ride of the season and it was pretty nice. Even a good sunset to take in.

 Incredible timing GB. I had a buddy contact me yesterday to talk GPS watches as he has gone through a couple of job changes recently, got way fat and wants to get back into running. That is a crazy deal, made even sweeter with the ability to add a (2) year Square Trade Warranty for only $15 more. I've had very good dealings with Square Trade.

I enjoy laughing at myself and this picture at the finish line probably best describes the second half of this race

http://cordovaink.pixieset.com/brokemans2015/?pid=296090432&id=41&h=NDA0MDQxNzAyMg

The look of the dude sitting in the background judging me says it all. At least this one about a second and a half later makes me not look like such a #####.

What an ugly sport we all make ourselves suffer through, huh?

On the plus side, my official time was actually faster than I thought it was - 1:37:28. :pickle:

On the positive side, like your kicks. I was wearing my triumph iso's this morning.

Love the old school socks. Badass. :headbang:

Pained facial expression aside those are very cool pics. No other runners around to muddle them up and great blue sky/skyline background.

ETA: This is from my first 50K, where to say I was undertrained is quite an understatement. This is what a face looks like when it has hit the wall...more than once.
 This is a sadistic, but fun idea.

My finish from my BQ was the best misery face I've had. I was literally in tears... :bag:

Wow, you look like you're about to pass out in that picture. Did you collapse on the trail right after this was taken?
Believe it or not there was something like 10 miles left in the race and I made it upright the whole way. I had to walk about 4 of the last 5 miles because of severe muscle cramps in my legs. I did run the last one though!

Nope just a guy running a 10K in a Santa Suit wondering why, after the busiest bar night of the year, he is running at all.

Remembered another not so flattering pic: https://scontent.fdtw1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/v/t1.0-9/62906_150319488340829_6521084_n.jpg?oh=9572bfc70dd43d913190c36101bd3bff&oe=56CF5775

duck and bald is always going to win this one

(fwiw, gb- I'm a high-mineral content sweater too... end up looking like Queen Elizabeth by the end of long races).

I think I posted them in the original thread, but I made sure to :ptts: in all my NYC marathon photos.

Today I hit 10,000mi running since I started this madness in Fall of 2010! :excited: Kind of fitting it was on my favorite workout - the tempo run (averaged 6:26/172). I had to take a brief break due to some sharp cramps, but finished it off strong. Hard to believe I've logged that many miles and I'm still in one piece. Here's to the next 10,000! :banned:

GL to the racers this weekend. Do us proud, boys!

I'm bib 8142 in case anyone wants to sign up to track me with texts (text 8142 to 38909) or on the website. Good luck to Steve! Hopefully I'll see Chief tomorrow and wish him luck in person!

And also good luck to Duck!

Great pictures. I have a particularly humiliating one I will try to find and post later.

Good luck to all you Chicago runners!!

My fiance and I are planning to bike the entire route around 6am and then will be watching from our place in Pilsen right at mile 19.5. If you guys need a beer or something right around then just let me know!

It's definitely ballsy to run that much.

Can't wait to follow along this weekend, good luck to all.

Chief, show up at the line with confidence, you're ready for this.

Good luck Juxt, Chief, Duck and Steve. I won't be able to watch the Chicago marathon live as I'm camping near the Dells with my girls. This weekend looks like that one nice weekend in October in Chicago where everyone is outside.
