Ran a 10k - Official Thread (18 Viewers)

Thanks for all the shoe-feedback, guys. I thought I might be crazy for considering NOT using the magic shoes, but your comments are giving me the green light to stick with the Endorphin Pros, which I now plan to do. I honestly felt like they were less effort to run in than the Alphaflys. Maybe because I'm a heel-striker?
Oh, if you're a heel striker, that definitely makes sense. What size are your Alphaflys? Asking for a friend.

Hahah, 13. Big flipper feet here.

Hi friends.

my wife got me oofos for christmas. they're MAGICAL. isn't there a Dr in here and shouldn't have said somethign about recommending them? seems selfish, IMO.

in other news. no news. I have gained some weight... which, I guess, is news.

OK tried the magic shoes this morning. They're definitely different. Almost felt like the heels were lower than the ball of my feet. Maybe my expectations were too high, but the Endorphin Pro/Speed actually felt faster than these. By the end of the run, I was getting used to them though.

Anyone else try the Alphafly and not like them?
I’m not a fan of the Alphaflys (version 1 or 2). I stick with the Vaporflys. Have like 47 pairs of them. Am I missing something here, you can run a 3:25 backwards. Start at 7:15 for the first few miles, and then cruise along at sub 7 the rest of the way. Try and get your HR into the 150s.

I didn't know/realize that they're two different shoes. I just figured the former was the successor to the latter. Maybe I'll come across the Vaporfly in the future and give that a try!

Alright, this is pretty stupid to even write here because, well, running sucks, especially when it's hot, and, I haven't even bothered to ask the head honcho, but.....

There's a relay race here on June 3rd on the KT trail that is usually hot AF. Since I'm running Berlin in September anyway, getting into some kind of running shape by early June isn't the worst idea even though this is so dumb.

Is there any interest to have a 2023 version? If there is, I'll start to ask. Just got the email about registration that opens up January 23rd.....

Sure. I’ll try not to break something.

Wow. You added two letters to your usual response. So you’re telling me there’s a chance!

Nah. I wouldn’t want to drag the team down.

That's a negative, Ghostrider.

I'm rather interested. Mark me down as a probable.

Had facial surgery today to remove a cyst, which concluded with some stitches.

Apparently I shouldn't run for 4 days (or more accurately jog) and shouldn't do anything strenuous to elevate my blood pressure until the sutures come out on 1/19.

Looks like my 16 week training cycle is going to have some challenges. I'm going to have figure out how to best work around some of these missed workouts.

Good news is that the operation went well. The cyst was in a bad spot with a nerve right under it and if the doc hit it, I could have ended up with facial paralysis on that side of my face (small chance but scary). He expected at least having some mild weakness or temporary paralysis impacting smiling, but I have appeared to even avoided that as I have full range.

PS had 42 resting HR in pre-op and the machine kept beeping since it thought i was in distress :coffee:

Weather stalking for Sunday. Original 10-day forecast was 11C (52F) at race time. Each day the forecast has been increasing a degree. Now 15C (59F). Ugh. Not as bad as the following morning (70F) but also not as nice as the morning prior (42F).

Nothing I can do about it, at this point. Maybe run naked?

How warm later in the morning?

Do you have a bib# yet?

18C/64F at about the 22-mile point. 74% humidity.

I think weather is becoming something I'll have to push-through, versus benefit-from. Wind could be an issue as well. Increases to ~20mph through the morning. Out of the SSE. Hopefully holds-off as long as possible. It will be mostly crosswind (slight headwind) for the last 10K -- the course is mostly ESE at that point.

Do you have a bib# yet?

#3524, tracking link here (I think). There appears to be a fancy map option as well.

If your shoe size is an indication of, um, other dimensions as well ...this could be an interesting option.

But seriously, with warmer conditions, that's when knowing and monitoring HR can be helpful as you try to determine how conservative to run.

Actually, no matter what temp it is, I'm going out at 4:40/km (7:30/mi) and then just try to hold that pace for the whole race. I really don't care about getting my "best" time. I just care about getting a BQ. Pass/fail. It makes the plan quite clear.

The way the weather has been and projected in the near term, I suspect I’ll run in shorts more often than long pants in January. Quite unusual.
Yeah it's been great here as well. I ran in shorts today again. The last run requiring pants was a slush-filled run before Christmas. Almost makes me wish I had a spring race I was prepping for. Of course, the big snow storms in my neck of the woods are usually in February and March, so I'm far from in the clear.

As much as I would like to, I need to pass. With London added to my calendar, I'm carefully managing things at home. Plus my son is a HS senior and the relay is on the last stretch of his senior year. So I want to make sure I'm there for all things prom, track sectionals and states, etc.

Am I missing something? Is your max HR like 160? Checking your runs, you HR at sub 7:30 doesn’t even reach 140. I think you’re easily capable of running 3:05-3:10.

Yes, max is 160ish.

That run was pretty special. Temps were great, humidity too. If I can replicate that for the first 20 miles of the marathon, and feel like I did at the end of that run, I'll push the last 10K. Didn't even drink anything on that run. Will need to drink on the marathon, for sure. If the logistics work out, my wife is going to meet me with a bottle of caffeinated Tailwind at mile 12. I found that drink really helped me through my two ultras. I'll dabble in water stations throughout, as well.

My Vegas HM, at similar temps to Houston forecast (but WAY lower humidity), was full race effort. HR in the 150s for almost the whole thing. 1:32:31. That, times 2.2, equates to a marathon time of 3:23:32. Which is why I'm feeling like it's a reasonable goal.

On the upside, I've run almost 3,000 miles since that HM.

On the downside are temps/humidity, and the almost 20 days of trail running I did (instead of street running) after that special 20-miler. That's a big hole in my street running training right at the wrong time. Not like two+ weeks off entirely, but still not the right kind of training.

Anyways, after @gianmarco and @gruecd this morning each independently told me to DBAP, here's the plan:
  • First 3K (2mi): 4:50/km (7:47/mi) -- maybe there's a 3:25 pacer I can run with to keep me from my without-fail (thus far) habit of opening races fast?
  • Next 15K: Work my way down to an average pace of 4:40/km (7:30/mi)
  • 19K: Tailwind bottle from wife, double Naproxen
  • 20-32K: Maintain 4:40/km (7:30mi)
  • 32K point: Feeling like I did at the end of that special 20-miler? If yes, then push to 4:30/km for the remainder, targeting NYC qualifier of 3:14. If no, then stick with best pace I can manage.
The last time I ran Houston, I opened too fast (2 minutes off my HM PR) and then things went to hell. Would really like to avoid that this time. Granted, that was three four years ago, and also my first marathon.

Appreciate all the support, guys. Here's hoping the weather forecast improves a bit (today was the first day it didn't get worse)!

 climate change

I believe that someday (after we are all dead) the Great Lakes region will be most livable region in the world. Reasonable temperatures and abundant fresh water.
I think it may be in our lifetime. The sample size is tiny, but winter has been significantly different over the last 5 years when compared to any of my previous 35. Actual winter is about 4 weeks long, mid-late January to mid-late February. 6 weeks or so on either side of it there is strong winter storm potential, but it's generally of the 36 hour variety. Once it sweeps through we ebb and flow between calm and cool with some clouds and milder rainy Seattle-esque patterns. This is not the northern Ohio I grew up in...and I'm not complaining about it.

What is the reasoning behind the Naproxen?
