Randall Gay re-signs with Patriots (1 Viewer)

Haha :)

Randall Gay is solid. He is a great #3 cornerback and in an injury situation fills in at #2 quite well. Good signing.

It seems like about 10 years ago but Gay was starting in the Super Bowl in the 2004 season. The kid had a very good rookie year especially when you consider he was an undrafted free agent. Pressed in to duty due to injuries he did not look out of place and it really looked like the Pats had a quality CB for the future on their hands. It's now two season later and he has been MIA with injuries and he's now a complete question mark. The fact the Pats tendered him with a #2 is a good sign but with the low money that comes with that tender it's not a risk and I'm sure the Pats would have been OK if someone stepped up and signed him and gave the them a #2 for a guy that really hasn't been on the field since the Super Bowl.

While it's impossible to know what type of player Gay currently is (or if he can stay healthy) if he can merely be a solid CB that will be an asset. With Samuel (assuming he's back) and Hobbs starting the Pats have one potential All Pro and one solid and emerging CB. Tory James has a chance to be a good nickel/dime guy and Chad Scott is also around for depth purposes. Gay playing like he did in 2004 would really be a nice addition here. Add in the fact Merriweather can cover very well and both Rodney and Wilson coming back from injury and the Pats have an opportunity to really upgrade their secondary over last year's unit...if they don't get ravaged by injuries as they seem to do each and every year.

The Patriots secondary has seemed injury prone for a while, for sure. If they manage to hold up though, they are a fearsome unit and loaded with talent.

If Gay plays as well as he did his rookie season, and Samuel holds out, I would be fine with Gay and Hobbs as the starting corners.

I also would not be surprised to see Harrison and Meriweather as the starting safeties, with Eugene Wilson seeing time at corner.

I think Gay is a good #3/#4 corner, but I also think Hobbs should only be a #3/#4. Personally, I think corner backs are the weakest position on the pats and that they really need to sign samuels.

I think Hobbs has played better in his first two seasons in the league than Samuel did in his first two. I like Hobbs as a #2, and wouldn't be surprised if he emerges as a #1 this season. He won't be on par with, say, a Champ Bailey or Ty Law in his prime, but those corners are few and afar between, and New England doesn't really need a true shutdown corner to win.If Gay can return to the form he showed during his rookie season, I consider him to be a serviceable #2, or good #3.Samuel is a very good corner, but I don't consider him to be an elite corner, and I definitely don't think he's worth the money he is reportedly asking for. The defense is obviously better with him than without, and he is clearly the best cornerback on the team, but I think New England has as good a team as anyone in the league, with or without him.And quite frankly, if Samuel can fetch a 1st round pick in a trade (not out of the realm of possibility), you have to make that trade.
