"RANDOM" draft slots (1 Viewer)

I'm curious how these so-called "random" draft slots are chosen by computer. I'm not sure anyone can actually answer this question, but I'm wondering what other people think. Every year I play in 7 or 8 Phenom leagues that uses myfantasyleague. Each year the computer seems to come up with 2 different draft slots to put me in. On my one good year, I was put into the 1 and 2 slots in each of my leagues. This year it is the 6 and 12 spot. I think last year it was the 5 and 11 spot. A lot of the same teams play in these leagues every year and I notice the same thing with the other teams. It just doesn't seem very "random" to me...any thoughts?

ETA I'm not whining about my spots...I firmly believe that if you draft well, you can win from any slot.

I don't know what random algorithm they use, but I doubt there's a conspiracy going on. How many years of seemingly non-random draft slots are you talking about here? Unless we're talking about a few thousand drafts, your sample size is probably too small to show the results of their 'random' draft slot generator at work.

I'm not thinking it's any kind of conspiracy at all. My sample size is way too small...it's only been around 5 or 6 years and around 8 teams each year. But, like I said, I've noticed it with other teams who play in the same leagues with me each year. It's just odd to me...I find myself picking up another team or two just to try to have a draft from another slot, but it's always the same. LOL

I've been meaning to play with Pivot table reports in Excel and had a few free minutes. So I generated 12 new draft orders for a league in MFL and got the following for the average draft positions:

Sorted by franchise:

Franchise 1......... 5.333333333

Franchise 10......... 5.5

Franchise 11......... 5.916666667

Franchise 12......... 7.666666667

Franchise 2......... 8.25

Franchise 3......... 8.5

Franchise 4......... 4.666666667

Franchise 5......... 7.333333333

Franchise 6......... 5.25

Franchise 7......... 7.166666667

Franchise 8......... 5.75

Franchise 9......... 6.666666667

Sorted by average draft spot:

Franchise 3......... 8.5

Franchise 2......... 8.25

Franchise 12......... 7.666666667

Franchise 5......... 7.333333333

Franchise 7......... 7.166666667

Franchise 9......... 6.666666667

Franchise 11......... 5.916666667

Franchise 8......... 5.75

Franchise 10......... 5.5

Franchise 1......... 5.333333333

Franchise 6......... 5.25

Franchise 4......... 4.666666667

The mean average draft spot would be 6.5 for a 12 team league. Half the teams are above the 6.5 mean average and half are below. Standard deviation is 1.27, which means 68% of the teams fall within 1.27 draft spots of the mean average of 6.5.

Still a small sample, but I don't see anything worrisome. Though to be sure you could do the same test several more times and see if Franchise 4 always comes out on the bottom (or, top, since lower is an earlier pick), for example. But I doubt it's a problem.

Usually all the team names in the league are sent to a monkey at the MFL headquarters. The monkey will read and ponder each name. He will then rank the names from 1-12. The team with the best name will have the first pick and so on.

Pick a better name, get a better draft slot.
