(KFFL) The San Diego Chargers announced they have signed free-agent TE Randy McMichael (Rams) to a one-year contract.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

:goodposting:

At first reaction I agreed with the :lmao:

But now that you consider that Gates is recovering from off season nagging injuries, you have to wonder if the Chargers aren't hedging their bets. As a Gates owner, this concerns me more than I first reacted. The Chargers know more about this situation than anyone. How do you read the tea leaves on this?

Well, the Chargers let Manumaleuna go so I see McMichael as just his replacement. The Chargers don't have a heck of a lot of viable options at TE beyond Gates.

But McMichael isn't your journeyman bruiser 2nd TE. He was a pass catching TE all his career. I don't know much about his blocking skills. There are plenty of converted fullbacks and Hbacks who can do the dirty work that Manumaleuna left behind. If Gates is healthy at the start of the season, I doubt that McMichael makes the roster. He just does seem to fit the description of a blocking TE.

Well it's very possible that they may intend to spell Gates a little more, I guess. He has definitely had his share of dings the past few years. Everything I've read though, it sounds like Gates will be ready to go.

I wouldn't be worried about Gates.

It could have something to do with VJax missing the first 2 games. Maybe they'll send Gates out wide a little bit in those 2 weeks and use McMichael as the regular TE???

this could actually make a lot of sense. but he has to make the roster first.
