Rank the Alien Franchise Show/Movies (1 Viewer)

I recently re-watched Alien and Aliens. I thought Alien was way better than Aliens. I found Aliens to be pretty cheesy. I don't think I've seen any of the others.

Alien (all timer)
Aliens (all timer)

Alien: Romulus (very good)
Alien: Earth (very good)
Alien 3 (extended version) (good)
Prometheus (pretty good but my god these people are stupid)

Alien vs Predator (fun but bring the cheese)
Alien: Covenant (trying too hard IMO, these people trying to outdumb the Prometheus crew)
Alien: Resurrection (eh, a few good moments)
Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem (my god what happened?)

Aliens (1986)
Prometheus – (this is my hot take)
Alien (1979)
Alien vs. Predator
Alien: Covenant
Aliens: Earth
Alien 3
Alien: Resurrection – 2
I have it
1. Aliens
2. Alien
3. Alien: Earth
4. Prometheus (which I agree is deeply underrated. My only issue with it is the departure from canon with the Engineers)
5. Alien 3
6. Alien: Covenant
7: Alien: Resurrection
8. Alien: Romulus

9. Alien Vs Predator
10. Alf (most don’t realize this was an Alien franchise television show).

ETA - forgot about Romulus

I forget which one it is when the plant puffed out the black mist and dude got infected, and did the classic trope “no, I’m fine, let’s press on” without telling anyone about inhaling a fine black mist from an alien plant? Yeah, that **** was hilariously dumb.

Yeah, I burst out laughing in the theater and got shushed by some nerd.

You're not distinguishing Alien 3 theatrical vs the Assembly cut which are two pretty different films. Not just a few added scenes. Assembly Cut is up there with the first two movies for me.

Interesting....never even heard of this. How do I watch the assembly cut?

That can be a challenge. It would either be called Assembly cut or sepcial edition. Looks like Vudu might have it. "Other" streaming services have it too, Stremio, CinemaHD, etc. It's how I watched it.

You're looking for a runtime of 2h24 vs 1h54 of the original.

Just rewatched them all right before Alien Earth

Alien - the grandaddy of them all. Flawless
Covenant - I am exceptionally high on David as a villain and hope they eventually come back to that.
Alien Earth - Took a little bit of a hit at the end.
Aliens - This is the one that shocked me. Growing up, I would have said this was the greatest action movie ever. Watching it now during my Alien-a-Thon....it doesn't vibe with the rest of the franchise at all and doesn't hold up nearly as well as I thought it would as an action movie. I still love it...but it's almost a "remember when" fondness...not it being a GREAT!!!! movie.
Alien Romulus - Expands the universe in a good way. Takes a hit because of the Alien Ressurection style ending.
Prometheus - Might age well though since Alien Earth and Romulus have expanded this universe.
Alien Ressurection - Only saw it once in the theatre before this rewatch. Wasn't nearly as bad as I remember; nor as people make it out to be. I actually really enjoyed the smuggling crew. Not a fan of the ending.
Aliens v. Predator - Only saw it once in the theatre before this rewatch. Wasn't nearly as bad as I remember....but really fell short in the merging of these two iconic franchises.
Alien 3 (theatrical) - Killing Newt and Hicks at the beginning still really just sits badly in my craw. Wasn't bad otherwise....but the Alien FX in it was horrible.

Same, I want to see the extended version, i always liked parts of Alien 3, saw it in the theater
The idea of an all male prison in a remote section of space, and the doctor assigned to keep everyone alive, it was a different type of story from the others

Alien was filmed in 1978 by Ridley Scott, Aliens would not come out until 1986 and was a showcase of special effects by James Cameron who was coming off Terminator and many folks don't know this but he co-wrote Rambo with Sylvester Stallone although he did not direct that film. Aliens is his next film to direct after Terminator and right before he gets into the Abyss which won't even hit theaters until 1989, this is his bridge between those two films . Cameron is also credited with writing a good chunk of Aliens as well

The 2 original films are very different in their approach. The Aliens in 1986 are almost on the attack from the get go
I was 12 when I saw Aliens in '86, it scared the HELL out of me. The I had to go back and watch Alien later on, not nearly as intense although a great movie on its own

You should definitely look into the assembly cut if you liked the setting of 3. The Assembly cut gives inmates their own story arcs, and gives the prison a much more religious end of days cult vibe.

It's the film David Fincher wanted to make. The studio screwed him over, cutting a ton of content out to make it more palatable to the masses and as a result completely gutted a large part of the movie's soul. Pretty sure it left such a bad taste in Fincher's mouth he didn't want to be associated with what was eventually released.

Looks like it's indeed on Fandango/Vudu.

Who knew there were so many movies in this grouping. I think I only thought there was Alien and Aliens. Didn't know all the others were related. I probably have only seen Alien once and not sure if I have seen Aliens or not. If so, it was a long, long time ago.

Same, and I'm pretty sure I've seen them all :lmao:

Alien
Prometheus (Loved this one too. It is the most interesting one of the genre IMO. Would rater rewatch this one than most of the others.)
Aliens
Romulus
Covenant
Alien Earth
Alien 3
Ressurection
------------
Alien vs Predator (It was dumb fun, but pretty bad all around.)

I'll weigh in here.

Prometheus is probably now my #1. Great cast, great effects, fantastic origin story. Didn't quite stick the ending.
Alien - Great cast, suspenseful and downright scary. The effects were decent even if a bit minimalistic . I'll never forget the first time I watched it.
Aliens
Alien Earth - was very skeptical about it after the first 2 episodes, but it really wrapped up nicely and had a good story line. It gets bumped up because it was so long, it could delve into a lot more.
Covenant - I think my expectations were too high after Prometheus, and hey Kenny Powers!
Alien Resurrection is severely underrated. Yes, I had an issue with the whole metamorphosis baby vibe, but it was ambitious and prime Winona Ryder bumps it up.
Romulus was o.k.
Alien vs Predator was fun.
Aliens vs Predator Requiem was less fun.
Alien 3 is just poor. Maybe I'll look for the directors cut one day, but I doubt it.

I would've liked Prometheus so much better if it had writing that made any sense. The most egregious of this are supposed scientists who choose to play with a new and potentially dangerous lifeform instead of taking necessary precautions. Lots of small cases of lazy writing like that that built up to make them hard to ignore.

Alien is probably the best movie.

Aliens is great but it’s an action movie and it’s long.

Alien 3 is also great. Charles S Dutton at his peak. Great directing, great score. Highly underrated cause solar people hate it.

Resurrection - Is the one with the time bandit-half-ling dude in a mini sidetrack? Not a great movie but the scene with all the failed attempts to mix/clone Ripley was awesome. So was the scene with the aliens swimming.

Aliens Reqium - Aliens meets Critters. It was almost comedy.

Prometheus/Covenant/Alien Earth - I don’t like how fast the aliens infect/hatch/change so incredibly fast now. I prefer the canon version of aliens having to be laid inside via the face huggers , not mist and 30 seconds later an entirely new line of species evolves.

Alien scared the bejesus out of me. Aliens was a great action movie combined with some scary moments. Reluctantly I rate Alien as the best movie for starting it all off and for the strong emotional reaction I had. But I enjoyed Aliens so much more and have rewatched it many times while I have rewatched Alien only once.
Two great directors for these movies. I wish James Cameron had never gotten himself entwined in that Avatar nonsense.

Completely unrelated, but not worthy of starting a new thread and I figure there’s a cross-over in audience. What did you all think of the film “Life” with Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal and Rebecca Ferguson? I thought it was an incredibly well-done Sci-Fi alien movie but it really seems to have flown under the radar.

Agree that Prometheus is underrated. Gets a bad rap for some reason.
Because it is stooopid. Personally, I am not sure how some of you made it through the newer movies enough rate them so high.

For me, it's:

Alien/Aliens (rank depends on mood)

Alien3 (proper cut as has been pointed out)

All the rest.

Yeah the amount of poor decisions and stupidly written characters in Prometheus ruined what was a great concept.
