Rank the Rookie QBs for Dynasty purposes (1 Viewer)

Here is one man's opinion...

There were only 10 drafted as far as I can see who are being asked to play QB...

Rookie QBs

1. Matt Leinart, Arizona Cardinals

Based on pure fantasy potential, the #1 was VY IMO, but Leinart is in an unbeatable situation. Amazing weapons, improving D, fragile starting QB.

2. Vince Young, Tennessee Titans

Thank god he ended up on a team with great coaches. He should be a star, but it may take some time.

3. Jay Cutler, Denver Broncos

Great situation, as Denver was hell bent on getting picks to help the passing game.

4. Brodie Croyle, Kansas City Chiefs

Maybe not as far back from "the Big 3" as the draft picks suggested (for fantasy purposes). Green is up there and might be one concussion away from retirement.

5. Kellen Clemens, New York Jets

Might be the best QB on his team before the start of 2007. Jets made great picks along the O Line to help out.

6. Charlie Whitehurst, San Diego Chargers

If Rivers flops in '06, he may have a shot in '07.

7. Tarveris Jackson, Minnesota Vikings

Vikes obviously high on him. Or are they? Rumors had the Vikings trying to trade up to 8 (Cutler on their mind?). Doubt Vikes knew Jackson would be their guy since even Jackson was surprised when he went so high. Good news is they'll give him a shot to compete for #1 when Johnson moves on.

8. Ingle Martin, Green Bay Packers

Aaron Rodgers may be the only QB higher on the depth chart in '07, though they should bring in a veteran once Favre retires.

9. Bruce Gradkowski, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Simms doesn't yet have a lock on the job...yet. Only other guy in the way is Rattay.

10. Omar Jacobs, Pittsburgh Steelers

Not going to see the field for the length of his Rookie contract, barring a Roethlisberger injury, and Maddox/Batch flop.

1. Matt Leinart (Arizona) - I've been pretty rough on him, but he fell into fantasy gold. From Bush, White, Byrd, Smith, Jarrett, to Edge, Fitz, Boldin, Pope, it just couldn't have gone better for Matt. I have Favre and squat on a keep 7, the 11th pick, and I am trying to move up for Leinart. If I am trying to get Leinart, then this has to look very good for him, because I'm just not a big fan. Warner isn't long for this league, Boldin and Fitz will produce, Leinart is future fantasy gold, methinks. In all my criticism, I was merely pointing out I liked Cutler better, but Matt has fantastic intangibles and this is a sweet landing for him.

2. Vince Young (Tennessee) - Still probably the most polarizing player out there, Young is #2 in my books. There's a pretty good chance he'll be thrown into the fire as soon as Matt. Most think he needs years to develop. I disagree. I think he's that good, and I doubt he's the type who is going to improve much in practice and on the sideline. He's going to have to learn from his own mistakes on the field of battle and figure out how to conquer the NFL like he did in college. It will probably be ugly with flashes of brilliance mixed in, but long-term we're probably looking at a McNabb type fantasy producer. He needs help on that roster. The haters will have their day in the sun, but the lovers will get theirs eventually. I think.

3. Jay Cutler (Denver) - It's hard to imagine a better situation for him. Plummer may not be going anywhere soon, but he could always get hurt. Jay will have the time to figure this thing out with great coaching and more importantly a great running game to help him out. Chances are you're looking at the long-term future starter in Denver, and it's anyone's guess how soon it happens, but there will be a wait. Javon Walker, and possibly Tony Scheffler and Brandon Marshall make this a pretty safe pick if you have the luxury of solid QBs on your roster. Because of the organization around him, he may have the best career of the three.

I can see an argument for ranking those three any way you want. It gets much more difficult with the guys below. Truth is the odds are long any of them do much, but the situations are intriguing and someone or other will beat the odds eventually. Most of them will be waiting for the injury opportunity if they get the roster opportunity.

4. Bruce Gradkowski (Tampa Bay) - The minute I heard the pick, it made so much sense. Gradkowski reminds me of Rich Gannon, and Gruden never had a more successful QB. Simms looked better than he gets credit for late last year, but he's still an immature developing QB. Gruden is a great QB coach and Gradkowski could be a great match. Gradkowski played like his greatest assets were between his ears and in his chest. Who knows, but if that's right, Gruden will love him. Bloom has been saying he looks like a great fit for a West Coast scheme, well here you have it.

5. Kellen Clemens (NYJ) - I'm basing this on talent and hoping Mangini is righting the ship in New York. I said all along I would give the highest draft grades to the teams that feasted on the OL talent this year. D'Brick and Mangold? An A from me. EBF likes Clemens better than Cutler. He could certainly be right about that. The only times I've mentioned Clemens in all my bloviating were to point out that he looked better than Leinart against USC that day. I wasn't alone in the assessment (TV analysts said the same). Put Clemens in AZ and Leinart here, and I would switch their rankings. Seriously, Clemens is that talented. The only real difference I see in him and Cutler is Jay's taller. Clemens has less to overcome with Pennington and Ramsey while Cutler waits on Plummer.

6. Tarvaris Jackson (Minnesota) - I pimped him as one of the two best small schoolers in very early January when he was ranked 6th or 7th among small school prospects. His game just translates nicely. Good size, strong arm, alert in the pocket, all the tools for a successful NFL QB. I'm shocked he went in the 2nd round. Childress must have seen something he liked (similarity to McNabb perhaps, same accuracy issues too, unfortunately not nearly as mobile). I've compared his upside to McNair, his downside to Akili. I put him sixth because the Vikings starter has gray hair and Childress knows how to maximize the QB position. He says he'll run it more than Reid, but that still means a ton of passing. This could be a real fantasy surprise in a year or two, or a wasted trade up for a shocking second rounder. Also watch out for the undrafted FA acquisition of Barrick Nealy who is much more moblile than Jackson and a better passer than most think. It will be an interesting camp battle.

7. Brody Croyle (KC) - Another pick with a gray haired starter in front of him. My concern is the situation in KC could be getting worse. A great aging OL, a great aging TE, a good aging WR1, and rugged young RB. Croyle has a good shot at an opportunity, but when and how good will it be in two or three years?

8. Ingle Martin (GB) - The other small schooler I pimped. Hah! They were the only two drafted. I should go boast in the forums at NFL DC where I was ridiculed for praising this kid back in December (I'm boasting here, I know, sorry). Martin is a poor man's Jay Cutler (oddly, both compared prematurely to Favre). They are the same type of QB. Strong accurate arms, very mobile, gutty with the game on the line, leaders. Martin was getting some heavy criticism this weekend for crumbling under pressure. Um, I watched him lead three dramatic last minute comebacks last year. That's why I liked him. Dunno. I do know there's rumors that GB is not pleased with Rodgers, Favre is done after this year, and Martin will have a year to prove he's a better option. I like this situation better than the two below.

9. Charlie Whitehurst - Man, I like Charlie, but this is not a good situation. I know Rivers is unproven, but he's the franchise guy, and he's going to have a long leash with Brees gone. It's not as bad as Jacobs coming in behind Ben, but it's a pretty tough situation if you're looking for playing time. Rivers can screw it up for a couple years and Charlie will stay on the bench. I doubt Rivers screws it up with LT and Gates anyway. Injuries could give Charlie a shot, but I think he's destined to flame out on the bench or move along with tenure in 4 years. Not what you look for in a dynasty draft.

10. Omar Jacobs - Ben Roethlisberger. Injuries happen. That's not much to hope for.

I don't like anything Charlie brings to the table. He's got good NFL size, that's about where it ends.I think Jackson is a project & I think this may be Johnson's last year. Unless they end up with the #1 overall pick (which I personally believe Minny is a playoff contender with Brad Johnson), I think Matt Schaub will be their QB of the future & I don't really know why they didn't work something out with Atlanta.

Matt Leinart

Kellen Clemons

Brodie Croyle

Vince Young

Tavaris Jackson

Charlie Whitehurst

Bruce Gradowski

Jay Cutler

Ingle Martin

In that order.

Poor Omar Jacobs. He's a great person with great ability, just is in a tough situation. He'll develop though, if his work ethic keeps up.
