A lot of owners, like myself, do a def by committee approach during the season. These are three teams that have good matchups in week 1 and are probably on your WW.

Bengals vs Denver: Orton and Simms both hurting

Seahawks: Bulger and Avery should play but Bulger has a broken pinky that may still be healing and the Rams are bad away from home. Seahawks secondary is very banged up...Trufant on PUP.

Cardinals: Playing the run first, new look 49ers. Switching to a new aggressive defense this year.

Texans: Playing against a rookie QB.

Saints: Also paying vs a rookie QB.

How do you rank them for week 1?

Seahawks

Cardinals

Bengals

I really like the Texans but I don't know if I have the balls to play them over Philly. (No yards against or points against scoring in this league) I think Sanchez is in for some real heavy pressure.

I also like New Orleans and they may be on some WW's. Reggie Bush is running one back this week if the Lions play their punt returns like they have been in the preseason.

Conventional wisdom says the Seahawks *at home* vs. the Rams, given some of the terrific performances Seattle has had at home over the last few years. However, my gut says the Rams come out inspired and run the football- Bulger makes it through this pinky thing.

I say go with Houston. Reliant will be busting with 70,000 maniacal fans trying to get in Mark Sanchez' head. I think he will make mistakes, and Mario Williams will put bruises on the child.

yes. this seems logical.They wont want to put too much on his shoulders early in his young career.I'd expect them to pound the rock as much as they can. Especially in the first 2 or 3 games.Once Sanchez gets some confidence, I can see them going to more of a balanced attack, but this may take anywhere from 3 games to 8 games and could last the whole season depending on what kind of success the team has.
 
I actually picked up the Saints because they have a nice 3 out of 4 game strecth that I think they might be able to produce some numbers.

Week 1: Lions

Week 2: Eagles

Week 3: Bills

Week 4: Jets

I would think this makes the Texans a mediocre start then...vs a team like the Seahawks or Bengals who will be playing against a team trying to throw a lot.

Lions and Jets maybe... but Bills do not have a slouch offense despite bad O Line and Eagles are a terrible team to play Def against. Personally I think the Jets will not be a turnover machine. Rex Ryan will dial in a conservative attack.So 1 week I see.

should be playing from ahead (possibly way ahead)

A lot to like there IMO.

I'll second the Saints. They should have Smith and Grant available (Starcaps), Jenkins helps solidify their secondary giving them a big,physical third corner and Darren Sharper is an upgrade at safety over last year. Stafford might make some big plays with CJ, but he'll almost certainly throw a pick or three, too.

Perhaps the biggest reason of all to like the Saints is that they dumped Jason David. Seems like that guy's made quite a career of getting burned on long pass plays.
 
I wouldn't overthink it. Sure the Jets will try and "grind it out" and "take the pressure off" Sanchez, but c'mon. Houston could go up 17-3 pretty quick.

It's a rookie playing his first game on the road in a loud stadium. My sleeper D vote is Houston hands down.

Remember how the Raven's handled Flacco? Run the ball with 2 or 3 RBs, solid defense, keep the TO's down in his first year. This is how Rex Ryan and the JETS will try to play this year. It worked very well for the Ravens and the JETS will try to copy that. I doubt the Texans get a lot of TO'sMy vote is for the Seahawks, who will go up big on a pathetic defense, and force the Rams to throw to catch up. I see a lot of Sacks, couple INTs and 13 points against.

Comparing the Ravens/rookie Flacco to Jets/rookie Sanchez is reaching - two different teams - but if you wanna draw it out....

Flacco - in his first NFL road game - was sacked 5 times and fumbled twice.

I'm so sold on the Texans D at home vs. Sanchez that I'm benching my Giants D.

 
Are the Texans healthy on DEF? Seems like Dunta Robinson and someone else is hurt

Edit...Robinson was holding out. He's back now. Looks like maybe only Cushing is hurt.

What have the Texans done to improve. These guys gave up 38 pts to Pitt and 41 to Baltimore last year. Those are not exactly offensive juggernauts

My first impulse was the Seahawks D at home where they seem to play well. But I'm going with the Saints. Their defense is improved, rookie QB on the road in his first game, Detroit's O-line is the weakest of the potential opponents I'm looking at, and I could keep them around for a few weeks(schedule wise) if they get off to a good start. I'd avoid the Texans this week as I think the Jets have the O-line and RBs to possibly limit Sanchez's exposure. I also considered Cincy, but I've backed off them lately as it looks like some of the injured Broncos could be ready. All told it's a pretty good weak for the defense by committee crowd, with several good match ups.
